Eagle Pass residents on edge as Texas Gov. vows to expand border operations – Houston Public Media

The police had barricaded the streets that lead to Shelby Park, where the Texas National Guard has taken over. It fronts two-and-a-half miles of the Rio Grande, but the riverbank is now piled high with row after row of razor wire and a wall built out of steel shipping containers.

Leslie Odom Jr. on How His Theme Song for 'One Night in Miami' Echoes Sam Cooke for the Era of George Floyd

When Leslie Odom Jr. signed up to play Sam Cooke in “One Night in Miami,” he knew that he had a non-acting task awaiting him after shooting: director Regina King had already made it clear that whoever played the late, great soul singer was also who she wanted to co-write and perform an original end-credits theme. That task fell readily into the hands of Odom, who had already used his stardom from his stage role in “Hamilton” to launch a career as a singer-songwriter.

Sinclair Broadcast Group is shrinking its workforce by 5%, letting go of several hundred employees as a result of the “profound impact” of the pandemic, said the company in a statement. The company employs over 9,211 people, meaning that approximately 460 staffers were affected by the downsizing.
“The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be felt across all sectors of the economy, something that can have a profound impact on a company as diversified as ours,” according to a statement from a Sinclair spokesperson. “From local businesses and advertisers to distributors and partners, no component of our business’s ecosystem has been fully shielded from the impact of the global pandemic. In response to this, we are currently undergoing enterprise-wide reductions across our workforce, including corporate headquarters, to ensure we are well-positioned for future success.”

The Texas-born movie theater chain Alamo Drafthouse has announced that it will keep its COVID-19 safety measures in place, despite Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive order lifting the mask mandate and reopening the state.
In a statement posted to its official Twitter account on Tuesday, Alamo Drafthouse reaffirmed its COVID-19 precautions and took a stance against Abbott.
More from Variety
“Alamo Drafthouse’s mandatory mask policy remains in place, as well as our 6′ social distancing protocols, and all of the other safety measures we’ve had in place across the country since last year,” the statement reads. “We are only following the guidance of the CDC and medical experts, not politicians. Right now, at what we hope is the beginning of the end of COVID, the health of our teams and our guests remains this company’s top priority.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, 13 of the top 20 best-selling books listed on Amazon in the U.S. were by Dr. Seuss.
More from Variety
Among those were four of the books that Dr. Seuss Enterprises said it will stop publishing and licensing: “If I Ran the Zoo” (No. 6), “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street” (No. 12), “On Beyond Zebra!” (No. 19) and “Scrambled Eggs Super!” (No. 14). The surge in sales reflected a desire by fans to get copies of the now-blacklisted books before they’re unavailable.

To the surprise of few, the CMA Festival planned for downtown Nashville in June has been canceled for a second consecutive year — likely the first of many likely summer festival cancellations to come in the U.S.
The news first came via a lengthy note sent by Country Music Festival CEO Sarah Trahern to CMA members.
More from Variety
While other festivals are still looking at vaccine rates and mulling their prospects for being able to pull off a large-scale, multi-day gathering before the summer is over, the cards were clearer for the CMA and its festival, which takes place on the earlier side, in June, and which would face enormous difficulties even bumping the proceedings back a month or two, given that CMA Fest takes over a significant chunk of the metropolitan area.
