Advocacy groups say tech giants need to 'step it up' on sustainability

The five biggest tech companies in the U.S. have touted a wide array of sustainability initiatives, but critics say the companies fall short where it matters — lobbying.
Despite the financial success of Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, environmental advocacy groups say the tech giants are not putting enough financial support behind lobbying for pro-climate public policy.
“The individual actions that companies are taking are vital, and we need them to keep doing that and to step it up. But the most important thing that we all need is public policy that really bends the climate curve,” Bill Weihl, executive director of ClimateVoice, told The Hill.

Tax policy helped power-sector emissions fall 40 percent, can do more

Tax incentives helped to propel an energy transformation that may have taken a century to take shape in just two decades, driving private sector dollars into clean energy development and deployment. The market signals generated by these tax incentives and private sector investment have led to innovation and economies of scale for clean energy technologies.
The Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE), a coalition representing the energy efficiency, natural gas and renewable energy sectors, has seen many parts of the American clean energy industry mature and thrive with the support of stable and predictable tax policy.
Tax credits support technologies in early commercialization, such as carbon capture and storage; long-standing generation technologies such as biomass, biogas, geothermal, hydropower, solar, waste-to-energy and wind; as well as combined heat and power, fuel cells and energy efficiency. This technology-inclusive approach has seen consistent, bipartisan support by Congress.

The Hill's 12:30 Report: CDC identifies 5.8K COVID cases of 66M vaccinated

Via The Wall Street Journal’s
Robbie Whelan, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found only 5,800 COVID-19 infections among more than 66 million fully vaccinated Americans. https://on.wsj.com/3wYap48
I.e.: Only 0.008 percent of fully vaccinated people have gotten COVID-19.
What to know about the cases among vaccinated individuals: “The CDC found that 29% of breakthrough infections were asymptomatic and 7% of patients experiencing a breakthrough infection were hospitalized. So far, 74 people have died after experiencing breakthrough infections. The agency is expected to publish some of these findings next week.”

For context — from David Hirschwerk, an infectious-diseases physician who has treated at least one fully vaccinated COVID patient.: “The experience so far is that the vaccine remains highly effective and those who did have breakthrough infections have had very mild and manageable illnesses. This is really what we see each season with the influenza vaccine.”

McCarthy hails 'whole-of-government approach' to climate

White House national climate adviser Gina McCarthy
“The whole of government approach is not to pigeonhole the challenge of climate, but to recognize that it… needs to be integrated into everything that we do,” McCarthy said Thursday at The Hill’s Sustainability Imperative event.
McCarthy said that despite the daunting challenges posed by climate issues, a much broader consensus about the fact of climate change would change the calculus.

“We have crossed the barrier of denial of climate change, that’s so far out of the realm” compared to years past, she told The Hill's Steve Clemons. “It’s an entirely different conversation than we’ve ever had before.”

In a statement Tuesday, a State Department spokesperson said Kerry will visit Shanghai and Seoul from April 14 to April 17 and discuss “raising global climate ambition” with South Korean and Chinese leaders.
Key timing: The trip will come days before an April 22 White House climate summit, where President Biden is set to announce the new emissions target under the Paris climate agreement. Biden reentered the pact after former President Trump
