After Katherine Angel, a British academic, published a book about desire,
Unmastered, in 2012, she noticed how often other women told her she was “brave” for doing so. An aphoristic meditation on erotic longing,
Unmastered included much of Angel’s own experience, and she knew what they meant. “Writing publicly about my sexuality,” she observes in her intriguing, philosophical new book,

As moving as it is riveting, Patricia Engel’s
Infinite Country is a one-of-a-kind telling of the timeless story of migration. The era-leaping novel combines international history—the Colombian Conflict, the introduction of the DREAM Act—with the personal stories of a family whose bond cannot be broken by geography. A late-night dash for freedom in the opening chapter is just the start of a border-crossing relay race that spans the Western Hemisphere. Engel’s pacing is breathless—she covers three generations in under 200 pages—but just as frequently gives way to heart- and time-stopping moments.
Infinite Country is poised to be one of the most stirring page-turners of the year.

On Vulnerability | Katherine Angel

It’s tempting to insist that women are themselves the authority on their desires; that they categorically know what they want. But is anyone an authority on themselves, whether on their sexuality or anything else? I don’t think so – and I’m not sure that insisting so gets us very far. Women are not the authority on themselves – not because they, unlike men, have difficulty detecting their ‘true’ desires, but because no one, perhaps especially when it comes to sex, is an authority on themselves.
In
Vendredi Soir, Claire Denis’s film adaptation of Emmanuelle Bernheim’s novel, Laure is moving out of her flat where she lives alone. We see her packing up boxes to move in with her boyfriend the next morning; after spending a while mulling over outfits, choosing what to give away and what to keep, she gets in her car to drive to some friends’ for dinner. It’s a foul night – torrential rain and a transport strike have the roads in gridlock.

As soon as lockdown lifts, I will be reading Katherine Angel’s new book in cafés and on park benches – if only to enjoy the look on people’s faces.
Just imagine the curiosity that the title,
Tomorrow Sex Will Be Good Again – a sardonic quote borrowed from the French philosopher Michel Foucault – would prompt. When did sex stop being good and why? Was it when the pandemic-hit British libido fell off a cliff, plunging the country into what experts are now calling “a sex recession”? If so, how can we possibly hope to make it good again… by tomorrow?

In December 2012, a website appeared seemingly advertising a new line of lingerie in the Victoria’s Secret “Pink” collection. The site, pinklovesconsent.com, showed images of brightly coloured underwear emblazoned with slogans such as “No Means No”, “Ask First” and “Consent is Sexy”. “Victoria’s Secret is using its nationally recognised image to lead the country in the next sexual revolution: CONSENT,” a press release about the website declared.
Victoria’s Secret had produced no such underwear. The site was created by Force, “a collective dedicated to constructing a culture of consent”, which objected to the brand’s very real thongs embellished with the phrase “Sure Thing”. Lawyers representing Victoria’s Secret had the fake website swiftly removed. But a few years later, as brands began to capitalise on popular feminist messaging to sell products, the idea of pro-consent lingerie seemed far from outlandish. In 2015 the
