UPDATE 2-Umicore eyes 2021 profit boost from electric vehicles

* Sees substantial 2021 earnings growth in all segments
* Strong EV growth in Europe to boost battery materials (Recasts with EV market comments, outlook details)
Feb 11 (Reuters) - Belgium’s Umicore expects the thriving European electric vehicle market to boost its battery business in 2021 as the company forecast on Thursday “substantial” group-level growth compared to last year.
The maker of catalytic converters and battery materials for carmakers said volume growth in its battery materials segment in 2021 should “more than offset” the overcapacity and pricing pressures that weighed on it last year.
Chief Executive Marc Grynberg told analysts Umicore was well positioned to benefit from Europe’s electric vehicle push.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House said Thursday administration officials are working to address a growing shortage of semiconductor chips that has slowed auto production around the world.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the Biden administration is “currently identifying potential chokepoints in the supply chain and actively working alongside key stakeholders in industry and with our trading partners to do more now.”
The issue is one reason Biden plans to sign an executive order in the coming weeks to direct a comprehensive review of supply chain issues for critical goods.

FOCUS-Hyundai wrestles with the risks of embracing Apple

5 Min Read
SEOUL/SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Executives in Hyundai Motor Co Group are divided over a potential tie-up with Apple Inc, with some raising concerns about becoming a contract manufacturer for the U.S. tech giant, dimming the outlook for a deal.
Hyundai said earlier this month it was in preliminary talks with Apple, but gave no details. Local media said the firms were discussing an electric car and battery tie-up.
Apple declined to comment.
Apple has never acknowledged talks with the automaker about building vehicles, and it was unclear whether any such talks are still active. The iPhone maker typically insists on strict secrecy from its potential partners and suppliers about future plans or unreleased products.
