news with lester holt." good evening. help is coming from as far away as the east coast to fight wildfires in the west. an epic season of destruction that reached a new milestone today. 7 million acres torched this summer so far. across several states right now it's an all hands on deck effort. soldiers, even jailed prisoners enlisted to join the fight, with so many homes lost and so many others at risk. one of the worst fires continues to burn in chelan, washington, which is where national correspondent miguel almaguer leads us off on this busy tuesday. >> reporter: these are the conditions firefighters are facing on the front line. flames shooting closer and closer to homes in washington state. the national guard has moved in, bracing for a monster day tomorrow. winds expected to kick up dramatically. >> there are still hundreds and hundreds of houses that could be in the line of fire. >> reporter: the air attack key. dozens of drops every hour.

soldiers to help with a fire in washington state. fires are burning in seven states. in california alone, they're destroying 1,000 acres an hour. extreme heat is making the battle all the more difficult. it has been a very hot day in much of the country. more about that in a moment. first danielle nottingham on the fire lines in washington state. t reporter: six wildfires have surrounded the city of chelan. this is the view from the lake where at least three dozen homes were destroyed and 2,700 people were forced to flee. and the flames still burn inside one of many homes lost here in this lakeside community. and for the residents who lived here, the loss is immeasurable. >> it was pretty scary. i have never seen a firestorm like this travel this fast. >> reporter: reggie collins is the c.e.o. of chelan fruit thmpany. he escaped the flames, but the business did not.

peter ashley is over. ashley hiding out in a remote area 40 miles east of bakersfield, recognized by store clerk gary welfl. when he entered the local mini mart. >> just came in, got food. dirty. looked like he had been hiking for days. >> reporter: unable to call for help, he texted his sister who then called authorities. officers finding ashley on a remote road, shooting and killing him after the suspect brandished a firearm. the manhunt for ashley began after three men were reported kidnap at gun point, those men escaped. the next day, a body is discovered in a cabin. later identified as a dentist. august 1st, two officers are shot in a gun battle with the alleged suspect, both survive, but the suspect flees the scene. two days later, police release a sketch of ashley and link him to all three crimes the next day. investigators say ashley walked more than 30 miles over 18 days before authorities tracked him down.
