California Almost Out of ICU Beds as Covid Cases Top 2 Million

(CN) — A record-breaking spike of Covid-19 cases has pushed California to over 2 million confirmed infections ahead of the Christmas holiday and left fewer than 1% of the state’s ICU beds available for new patients.
And with 32,000 new cases reported Wednesday, hospitals will continue to be inundated with new patients into the new year at alarming rates.
Over 3,800 Californians with Covid-19 lay in ICU beds across the state, nearly double the number just three weeks ago. That will continue to rise as the explosion of new Covid-19 positive cases plows into the record books every day.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Since the coronavirus pandemic took hold in the U.S., Sara Houze has been on the road — going from one hospital to another to care for COVID-19 patients on the brink of death.
A cardiac intensive care nurse from Washington, D.C., with expertise in heart rhythm, airway and pain management, her skills are in great demand as infections and hospitalizations skyrocket nationwide. Houze is among more than 500 nurses, doctors and other medical staff California has deployed to hospitals that are running out of capacity to treat the most severe COVID-19 cases.
Her six-week assignment started Monday in San Bernardino, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) east of Los Angeles, and she anticipates working 14-hour shifts with a higher-than-usual caseload. San Bernardino County has 1,545 people in hospitals and more than 125 are in makeshift “surge” beds, which are being used because regular hospital space isn’t available.

Intensive care unit beds across Southern California are plummeting to critical levels, with capacity falling to 1% in Ventura County and 0% in Riverside County while Los Angeles County — home to 10 million people — had fewer than 100 beds available.
But the worst of the surge is still to come, experts say. L.A. County has more than 4,400 people hospitalized with COVID-19, and officials said that number could rise to 5,000 by the weekend.
