would read cohesion and effectiveness and it would be really terrible. when we talked about people being in the military, it was going to read cohesion and effectiveness and all of the stuff. now we've got restrictions and the nda blocking abortion related expenses, not quite sure why paying for somebody's abortion as part of their health care, we pay for other people's health care, why that somehow affects cohesion. restricting transgender care services, targeting diversity programs at the pentagon, what is -- what sense does this make? why are these things kept out of the bill and affecting cohesion and effectiveness. it sounds to me like the effectiveness right now is can we get enough people to serve in the nations all volunteer military? >> that is exactly right. we need to be clear to those people who have raised their right arm to say that they would serve and that this isn't doing it. there are a few things that i want to clarify. these efforts directly target
we have an all volunteer military. anyone who wants to serve, who is qualified to serve, should be able to do so. and when they are serving, they should be treated fairly and with respect. that means promotions, that means military justice. it means opportunities, and it means all the things that should come with serving your country. what we should be focusing on are the things that i am trying to introduce. increasing the housing allowance, trying to build more housing. making sure that families get access to housing that is livable. making sure that the salaries are on par. those are the things that families talk about. childcare, spouses being able to be employed. those are the things that we should be focusing on, instead of having arguments about things that really undermine readiness and undermine the effectiveness of the u.s. military. >> thank you for being with, us congresswoman maryland strickland of the state of washington. joining me now is kansas city
served here, they say no. no, no. make it a volunteer military like it is now. i don't know. there is something cathartic about serving your country. i think it would be a good idea, whether it the military or whether or not teaching kids on read but service is good. >> i agree, i think i base it on my own experience, i was 17 when i graduated from high school, vietnam war was over, the draft was over. and to me it fell like the nation had folded up military like a flag and put it on a shelf, we'll take it down from the shelf when we need it again. in hindsight, i wish they would have volunteered or you know joined some branch of the service. my world view was not that big, my father had not served in the military, i just done didn't think about it, i wish i would
luhansk there is a town in between them and it is critical to the russian offensive and there is a stand-off in that town. a different part of the world i want the talk about this. could be significant. taiwan announces a mandatory military service for men over the age of 18. what does that tell us from here? >> it's a reflection of the war in ukraine. they see what's happening there and they recognize they could be next. certainly they are moving from four months conscription to a year conscription. what they tried to do is develop a volunteer military like the united states. they couldn't do it. they are committing to this and stepping up. they have wide support in doing this. that support is coming from the fact of russia's aggression in ukraine. certainly what happened in hong kong the way the prc took that
today back in the hands of the taliban, would you have imagined 21 years ago? >> nobody imagined literally in 90 days, 90 green berets handed over the country back to afghan security forces. i was there on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. some of my friends were on the very last aircraft. my son served the 19th year. we've given the war to our children. that is unfortunate. pete: frank how has that affected your work too? you saw the tragedy of a year ago. we were here on the 20th anniversary together in the shadow of what happened in afghanistan but are we prepared to respond if we needed to today as a country? >> yes. i think we are. i know for a fact if something happened again we would all come together again and we would have the greatest response. we're blessed we have all volunteer military, this will be to die for you and i every single day. all too often they do. you know what?
veterans testifying and they have died because of their exposure to burn pits, the cancer, the lung conditions are serious and they need to be dealt with. we sent folks off to war in places that are a lot different than the united states. to come back they have injuries it is no matter if you can see them or not we need to take care of them and that has been the goal of the senate affairs committee. it has been delayed now and i hope we get the bill done, we will continue to fight to make sure it does get done because it's too important. i said on the floor last week we have a all volunteer military, folks sign-up, we make promises to those folks and they make promises to us, we need to uphold our part of the bargain which is healthcare and benefits. >> senator, i have heard reports that republicans are actually holding up the bill
healthcare, then go ahead. but let's just be honest, if you do that, that means you're opposed to taking care of our veterans. hopefully on tuesday, monday or tuesday, when the vote is held again, people will come to their senses and say we're going to vote correctly this time as we did on june 16th, take care of our veterans and make sure that we are all volunteer military and the people we send off are taken care of when they get home. >> recruiting has been tough. the army is actually likely to miss its goal by nearly 40,000 over the next two years. >> that's correct. >> do you worry this contributes to that? >> absolutely 100% correct. i don't think we can be critical of the army on recruitment when they miss their goals and they will. and then do stuff like this because this will add to their inability to get good people into the army. and so this is important on so many different levels, brianna, to make sure that not only we take care of our vets, that we're able to have an all volunteer military, to protect
