[narrator] ames now knows the double agent who s been swaying thatcher and reagan s thinking. unbeknownst to oleg, there was a growing list of people in the cia who were aware of him, his background, what he was doing, and his exact identity. [narrator] and if the cia can work out who the mole is, how long until the kgb finds out? the more people who know the name of a source, the more imperiled the source becomes. if his secret is betrayed to the kgb, it s a bullet to the back of the head. the risk for gordievsky is death. garner enough support given this shift and given that rise from the far right linda, we ll certainly see how that plays out in july. of course, looking at these results, the french president s party didn t do well. emmanuel macron calling snap elections for later this month. yeah. look i think again, it wasn t a shock that the national rally and other far right parties did so well. but what was a shock was how emmanuel macron reacted to this. he didn t have to do this. he could have come out and said, look, this is a protest vote and just carried on. but on the one hand, i think he didn t have a whole lot to lose. he already lost his his overall majority in parliament. he s already struggled to get some key policies through and this may be a calculation that this is a chance to win back a mandate. and alizée source telling cnn that the approach will be convince, convince, convince in the lead up to these elections, the first round just three weeks away. but in his speech to the nation, he certainly didn t disguise his concern about the rise of the far right. take a listen on france le représentant attend in france, the far right parties representatives have garnered nearly 40% of all votes. for me, who has always considered europe to be united, strong, independent and good for france. this is a situation that i cannot come to terms with. the rise of nationalists, of demagogues is a danger for our nation, but also for our europe, for france s place in europe and in the world. now, of course, if things go his way in the upcoming parliamentary elections, he could renew his mandate. but of course, on the flip side, france could face a political crisis. they could end up being a far right prime minister if the far right manages to gain the most votes in parliament. and that could make it even more difficult for macron, who is, of course, really the key voice in europe when it comes to certain issues, like, for example, support for ukraine. linda yeah, certainly a political risk that he is willing to take. good to have you with us, claire. sebastian in london. thank you. well, we re staying on this story. john rentoul is the chief political commentator for the independent and a visiting professor at king s college in london. he joins us via skype from london. good to have you with us. good morning. good morning. well, this was a four day voting marathon. it happens every five years. that, of course, saw europe shift to the right. we saw these far right parties making gains and really delivering stunning defeats to two of the bloc s most important leaders, france and germany. what did you make of the results? well, the ones we know so far, the projected results, i should say. well, i m i m more surprised. i mean, the results were, they were predicted, which makes, president macron s response, more surprising that, as we heard just there, he said he, he cannot accept, the rise of right wing, extreme parties and that he s going to call a general election in france as a response. i mean, that s, that that is, that that did take me by surprise as well as the fall of the, the belgian, government, of course, but, but president macron is a very, very interesting politician. and, i think, what he s trying to do, put himself at the leadership, you know, at the leadership of the center across europe is a very interesting thing. and we will see if his gamble comes off. of course, he s not he s not putting his own position at risk. and he already has, has no majority in the french parliament, but it s a very, it s a very interesting gamble, especially in the light of what, what rishi sunak has done in britain. yeah exactly. a huge gamble. one that marine le pen, who, of course, leads france s national rally party and had such strong results, it was quite pleased to hear a no doubt. but i want to ask you about overall this european parliament shifting more to the right what that will mean on issues like immigration, on issues like security going forward. well, i mean, it s interesting from a british perspective, that there seems to be something similar happening across europe. i mean, the british politics has seen a sudden, a sudden change in the past year or two, on issues such as change, rishi sunak are prime minister as as adjusted policy because we were very much set in a two party consensus about the urgency. i m agenda and about the progress towards zero and the rishi sunak has said, we ve got to adjust the speed at which we approach that target because we cannot load on one voters. and now that, that sentiment seems to be very widespread in europe until you ve got leaders giorgia meloni in italy, who did extremely well in the european parliament election and it s fair to say the au president as live on the land soul that this shift was coming and in turn shifted further to the right yes. i mean, that that is happening happening across europe on especially on these two issues climate change policies and immigration giorgia meloni was elected in italy on a very strong anti-immigration platform. i mean, italy obviously bears a large brunt of the arrivals across the mediterranean from africa she s adjusted her position actually since you since you entered office, but the attitude of other properties across europe on immigration as taking. a much tougher line. and the idea of third country processing, which britain has taken to the extreme of their a wider scheme is now an emerging consensus across europe and of course, germany s laid down all have shelves, party had the worst ever result in european election coming in third after two other parties why was that um, it s interesting because his, his most controversial issue over the past year has been germany s reluctance, support, or for the ukraine war. and it s hesitancy about more full-throated policy, which olaf scholtz, i thought had had navigated well, but i think domestic issues of the the cost of living problem which has been the dominant across europe he hasn t handled so well and i think we ve seen the afd, the german right-wing anti-immigration party, taking full advantage of that shift in sentiment that we were talking about across europe. yeah and i just want to ask you, russia s war in ukraine, of course, is the biggest land conflict as since world war ii what could this shift to the right mean for ukraine when it comes to age well, it s it s not good news. i mean, he s not directly related. i suspect. but these these populist anti-immigration parties do tend to taking more skeptical view about supporting, supporting ukraine in its war against russia i m not sure how that will play out i mean, we ve seen in america donald trump for example, being more skeptical about america support for ukraine but if i were president to lenski, i would be a little bit nervous today. yeah, i m sure he is joan rental in london. we appreciate your time. thanks so much for joining us my pleasure will still to come and shakeup inside israel s emergency government after country s emergency government set up after the october 7 hamas attacks in a televised statement, he described the decision as quote complex and painful. kansas departure comes just weeks after he issued an ultimatum to prime minister benjamin netanyahu. as he called on him to lay out a new plan for the war against hamas by june 8, netanyahu, afghans to change his mind saying now is the time to join forces again, made his thoughts clear, accusing the israeli leader of putting his own political considerations ahead of a strategy for post-war gaza and he s calling on netanyahu to hold an election in the coming months we re gantz was expected to resign saturday, but postponed his announcement following news that israeli forces had rescued four hostages held in gaza. officials there say the raid killed at least 274 palestinians. israel says it estimates that the number of casualties from the operation to be under 100 cnn cannot independently verify either sides figures were journalist le got can joins me now from london with more good to have you with us, elliott benny gantz had given the ultimatum. he wanted to bring you wanted a plan to bring hostages home. there s still over 100 in gaza, and of course he wanted a post-war plan for gaza his resignation was not unexpected, but he is pretty frustrated with netanyahu, right here s linda. look, it s not a surprise that he made this announcement. it was delayed as you say, by 20 before hours because of the rescue of four israeli hostages. but just because it wasn t surprising, doesn t make it any less impactful. and so instead of saturday evening announcing his resignation, he got up before the cameras on sunday evening which is when he made his announcement it s only can you moon me, tell one it progressively netanyahu is preventing us from advancing toward true victory, which is the justification for the ongoing and paint i m full cost of war. that is why we are leaving the emergency government today with a heavy heart, but with full confidence coil antonio, i call on netanyahu, said an agreed election date. don t allow our people to get torn apart i think that last point made by benny gantz calling on netanyahu to call on, to call for elections to enact elections is key because gantz is departure what it doesn t two main, the main thing it doesn t mean is that it doesn t mean that netanyahu s government will collapse. he still has a long way. it there s right-wing coalition partners 64 of the 120 seat in israel s parliament, the knesset. so unless his right-wing partners bolt from the government, netanyahu is at least politically safe in office until october 2026, which is when elections are next do so in terms of the other main impacts that gantz has, departure is likely to have. i suppose the most important ones as far as we re concerned. and would be on the way that the war plays out between israel and hamas in the gaza strip. and also those hostage talks. the hostage plan that president biden announced she america says, israel has accepted and for which they are still waiting for a response from hamas. now in terms of the actual war, we know already that far-right national security minister who let s not forget, was not permitted to serve in the israeli army because of his extremist views, or he s already demanding to be in the war cabinet effectively replace facing someone who served as a former chief of staff. and a former defense minister with someone who never even served in the army. so that is one possibility that could play out. and of course, without benny gantz who there s no dove. but without him. then netanyahu could be even more beholden to those far-right ministers in his governments. so that could lead to perhaps an intensification of the war with hamas in the gaza strip. i think more likely what we are going to see is less receptive if we can use that phrase towards the possibility of a hostage deal. indeed, both itamar ben gvir, the national security minister, of finance, minister bezalel smotrich which have already said that if that hostage deal that was announced by president biden and which the american say israel has already accepted. if that goes ahead and ultimately leads to a full cessation of hostilities with hamas that they would view that as a capitulation to hamas, as a defeat. and they would therefore bolt the government meaning that netanyahu s government would indeed collapse elections would be held and opinion polls suggest if they were held, right now, benny gantz would win and netanyahu it lose so that s one possibility i suppose ultimate also for netanyahu himself, ganim says departure leaves him more isolated than ever more beholden on his right-wing ministers. and i suppose i ll say more isolated internet as well, because i think that the united states and other allies of israel also liked the fact that gantz was in this government to provide for want of a better phrase, one used by aaron david miller four middle east negotiator a moderating influence on this government. and now that he s gone, i think that that could lead to netanyahu becoming more ice selected internationally and also domestically as well. we ve seen those protests day after day, week after week, especially against the netanyahu government calling on it to make big a deal and also to do everything that it can to bring those hostages home. and i think that those protests with gantz gone will perhaps intended so phi and that could lead to increased domestic pressure on prime minister netanyahu, linda yeah, the frustration that benny gantz has with netanyahu is shared by many families who have hostages still in gaza elliott galerkin for us in london. thanks very much soda welcome back, the us national security adviser is an enduring ceasefire deal between israel and hamas is the only credible path forward. and is calling on hamas to accept the latest proposal. those comments from jake sullivan coming just one day after an israeli military operation rescued four hostages from gaza officials there say scores of people were killed. sullivan was asked about that during an interview with cnn, take a listen the exact number we don t know, but innocent people were killed and that is heartbreaking. that is tragic. and the president himself has said in recent days that the palestinian and people are going through sheer hell in this conflict because hamas is operating in a way that puts them in the crossfire. but there is only one answer to stop that from happening. going forward. and that is a ceasefire and hostage deal that ends the military operations, brings the hostages home and puts us in a the position to give the palestinians and opportunity for a better future for their people were joining me now from london is ha hellyer senior associate fellow at the royal united services institute good defense and security studies, he s also a non-resident scholar at the carnegie endowment for international peace. good to have you with us if you could hear me. can you describe the political fallout from this? this is israeli hostage mission array to rescue four hostages that led to the deaths of hundreds of palestinians gaza s health ministry puts the number at to 274 killed almost 700 injured, which would make it the deadliest day in six months israel says that i m as close to 100 palestinians killed either way, both large numbers why are we hearing more about this from western political leaders i m afraid there s no good answer to that question in the sense that it simply confirm that the value of palestinian life in this whole conflict as seen from western capitals, is incredibly low and i think that what you ve seen over the past couple of days with i think only joseph burrell from the european union, actually, even noting the incredibly valuable civilian cost, where we re talking almost 300 palestinians having the dye at the hands of the israeli defense forces and other israeli forces in order to free four hostages, it s extraordinary and what you just heard from the united states was 60 hamas is false which i think is extraordinary of course, hamas is a bad actor mr organization, and so on. but the hamas did not kill these people and in any other operation where hostages are being freed, whether the domestically or internationally we wouldn t call this a success. we d call it i m a huge failure because we would also consider against the positive nature of freeing for hostages was 100 times more than that of people dying on the palestinian side. so i think the question that a lot of people around the world we are asking is simply do these western political leaders consider the palestinian lives matter? and i think the answer is not going to be very positive. and of course it s also frustration from families of hostages when it comes to the way this is proceeding, we know that 105 hostages were released during that ceasefire back at the end of november it was a week long ceasefire by contrast, only seven hostages have been rescued by the idf for released by hamas surely a ceasefire is going to be the most effective way to bring the most hostages home with less risks. risk to civilians in gaza so there s be in a number of ceasefire deals and hostage deals revealed over the past eight months. and they ve been rejected the time and again by israel despite the pleading of the families of the hostages in israel. and i think you re absolutely right that actually quite a number of hostages have been killed as a result of this war on gaza in the midst of idf strikes on gaza in fact, that it was recently claimed, although i don t think this has been verified yet, but it was claimed that even in the midst of this particular rescue operation, other hostages were killed so i think that it s absolutely true that if we re going to see hostages being released, the most hostages being released, it will come as a result of a hostage negotiation and ceasefire otherwise i suspect we will see more hostages dying but we ll also see scores multiple times more palestinian civilians dying. and i would remind your viewers that over the past nine months, we ve seen at least 40,000 palestinians being killed as a result of this war on gaza after un tack in october, on october 7 that killed 1,200 israelis the numbers are really quite extraordinary and i think that people ought to keep in mind that going forward if we re going to have any chance of any sort of co-exist since in the holy land and israel, palestine than the dignity of all human lives has to be passed. are amounts as opposed to this particular cycle where frankly an occupation that is so brutal and the campaign that is so brutal it s simply going to continue the cycle of violence and hatred for many years to come yeah, you make a good point. ha hellyer. thanks so much for your time. we appreciate it. ukrainian forces say they destroyed a state of the art rations delta fighter jet in a drone attack over the weekend. this was their target, the su 57 as a supersonic fifth generation for murder, drug trafficking, six crime extortion. and other violent acts. the challenge for law enforcement officials is that it s very difficult to know how many members of friendlier raga are already here in the united states? what somebody has venezuelan immigrants are telling us here in florida and other states is that they are already beginning to see in their communities the same type of criminal activity they fled from in venezuela. will they do? who have their hands and prostitution, contract killing, selling of drugs, selling of arms you name it. they re just all types of criminal activity that they can engage in anything that s an illicit activity. they re going to engage in for a profit. tren de aragua, a violent venezuelan street gang that is operating in the united s something particularly important to voters here and nevada, especially given the state s reliance on tourism and transportation. now, just looking ahead to monday, donald trump is set to have a pre sentencing hearing with a probation officer. now this is pretty routine following a conviction like his however, what s not normal is that it is going to be virtual will told he ll be at his mar-a-lago home with his defense attorney, todd blanche for that. alayna treene, cnn, las vegas well, as he looks to washington s nature summit in july, us president biden is warning against isolationism. his back in the us after wrapping up his five days hey, visit to france, a trip that kicks off a diplomatic blitz that also includes the upcoming g7 gathering in italy. on the last day of his visit, president biden stressed the importance of alliances while paying tribute at a world war i cemetery he says the stock was, is symbolic show of support for partnerships that can prevent future conflicts or biden earlier spoke the cherished ties between the us and france president biden sons federal gun trial resumes today. it s not yet clear if hunter biden will testify in his own defense hunter is accused of having a don while being addicted to crack cocaine and lying on a form about his drug abuse cnn s marshall cohen has more president joe biden s son, hunter biden has a huge decision to make. will he testify in his own defense at his criminal trial? that s currently underway in wilmington, delaware. he s facing three felony charges for allegedly lying about his past and continuing drug use in 2018 when he bought a gun, it s against federal law for a drug user or a drug addict to buy a gun or possess a gun. in this country so why might he want to take the stand? because it s a very risky move. there are so many things in his past that the prosecutors could throw at him if he s on the stand. well, for his part, the defense attorneys that have been representing hunter throughout this case have said that one of the things they want to make sure that the jury hears, if he does testify, is that he can tell them that he has been cleaned and sober and law abiding since 2019 the jury in this case has heard so much about his rampant and almost unstoppable drug abuse in the years, including when he bought that gun in 2018. that s a big part of the prosecution s case. so the defense might try to rebut some of that by telling the jury about his subsequent prosecutors have said in pretrial court filings that if hunter does testify, they might want to ask him about his discharge from the navy in 2014 because he tested positive for cocaine back then. and also they said they might try to undermine his credibility. you might try to impeach his credibility. they said, when they charged him, that that he lied on federal background check forums about his drug use they said in these filings that if he testifies, they might also try to convince the jury that he lied. also about his taxes. they have charged him in a separate federal indictment in california all about his taxes and the legend tax evasion the prosecutor said that they may try to bring in some of those allegations into this case. to demonstrate to the jury they didn t their view he cannot be trusted on the stand on his tax forms or on a gun form, either so we ll find out monday when the proceedings resume in delaware at 9:00 a.m. eastern, we should learn pretty soon if he s going to testify, if he doesn t, then we will probably be heading straight to closing arguments in this historic case. marshall cohen, cnn, washington what is more people in china move to cities to find work and raise families are growing number of communities becoming so-called ghost villages once full go right to cnn as evan perez live outside the core, bring us up speed on what has happened ever will john the jury, is still not in the room at this moment. and the prosecution and the defense could could get to their closing arguments as soon as that happened. and as soon as the jury is in the room but as you pointed out, abbe lowell, a hunter biden s attorney? no surprise here. let s be honest indicated did in the pretrial in the pretrial hearing just now that he doesn t believe 100 biden will with testified the formal word will come when the jury is present and part of what they re arguing right now behind the scenes. is what jury instructions, what the jury will be told about all of this. one of the things that abbe lowell got agreed to was that the jury will be told that you can t hold it against the defendant for not testifying in his own defense the judge, though, has push back on the defense s efforts to add more language to the jury instructions that would be more favorable to 100, for instance, the idea that he would he didn t knowingly violate the law, which is something that defense is really all about. and they also wanted to they also want to make the argument that hunter biden did not think he was addicted to drugs when he bought that gun? in october of 2018? that s the reason why we re here and why hunter is facing these three federal charges that could send him to prison if he is convicted, but it s you pointed out, we could very much have this case in hands of the jury today if a hunter biden does not testify and john, i mean, the fact that we re here we had about ten witnesses. i think i was to ten witnesses or four-and-a-half days of testimony on the part of the by the prosecution s this case really is what the jury is going to be considering after all of that, i appreciate you giving us sort of the real-time description of what s going on inside the courtroom. because the attorneys are just having these discussions with the judge, right now. can you a little us a little bit more about the jury instructions that abbe lowell did want, but didn t get for the defense here and it does have to do with what is their main argument they are making the case at hunter biden did not think when he signed the documents that he was addicted to drugs, write that right john this has been really the focus of the defense. they have tried their best to point out to the jury what the prosecution has brought on so far does not show that a hunter biden was was doing drugs in october in the month of october of 2018? today, you have text messages, you have testimony from september of 2018 in november of 2018. and so that s what they re trying to focus on and what what what hello was trying to do was to make this more clear in the instructions of the jury is going to get the form that they re going to fill out when they when they vote on guilty or not guilty the judge pointed out that the instructions that they re going to get when they when they get read out to them, will have the word knowing in there. so that s the reason why she said it was not necessary to put this to put this more fully in the form that the jurors were get. so low has not one very many of these arguments with the judge. so it s not a surprise that that he didn t get his way, but for the prosecution s point of view, they believe that what the law simply says is that he was using the drugs, using drugs around the time that he bought the gun. and so that s where they are going to focus there argument when we get to that this morning, jon. alright. evan perez, keep us up to speed, let us know when the jury is back in the roman. frankly, what happens next inside there. thank you so much. absolutely with us now as former prosecutor jeremy saland for more on this. all right. let s talk about jury instructions because i think that s really interesting in a second, but first, just your initial reaction to all indications. now pointing to a hunter biden not taking the stand. i mean, shocks and nobody who s an attorney and for that matter, probably many people in the public you want to testify because you think that s the best evidence and have very well may be, but there s so much impeachment material. there s so many things to confront him on, not just where other people have said, but his own word is own actions evidence is really strong against them, so it s a smart move, but i m sure he wants to say i wasn t using drugs then i was not addicted. that s how i was going to ask what risk outweighed the benefit here in the end, do you think for with regard to him taking this lowell is trying to make the argument we just heard that at that moment he was not addicted and he didn t believe he was addicted he was cleaned during that time and you heard from his daughter that he was doing well even though she was impeached as well. but if you get up there and all of a sudden you open that door and you re going to be asked, wasn t treated this and then there s this and then there s the image and there s the book, and there s the residue from the cocaine and crack cocaine and there s a crack pipe there s so much that they re going to build and build and build. and before you know it, your credibility is shot and right now, if we believe what we have read that you had one juror, for example, who was crying an in tears, there s a real opportunity potentially. at a notification or maybe hanging someone, you get in there and you lie it s not good. that s a great point. so let s now get into this discussion that is happening kind of argument in court right now regarding jury instructions, we know especially from very recent past jury instructions, the language of the jury instruction is so important to how things proceed when they go behind closed doors abbe lowell hunters, attorney, agreeing to allow the judge to give an instruction to the jury that they shouldn t hold it against him, that he did not he did not testify in that case, but then this discussion about what additional language or not can be will be added with regard to the instructions. why does this matter so much? well, it shouldn t be should it should be kant. he has a right to testify, doesn t have to testify, and you should not take an assumption or presumption one way or another. that s so critical because you cannot use your lack of words against you. that s not fair. no one should be judged that way in the law, in the constitution says that. so that s number one. number two, i almost forgot the question but with regards to their fighting now over what additional language in your instructions with regard as evan says, the judge s already said that the word knowing is going to be in the instruction, but abbe lowell is pushing for there to break because he is hanging. lowell is hanging his hat that at the time when he meeting biden hunter biden was filling out that form. he wasn t knowingly an addict. he wasn t knowingly and abuse preserve drugs. and if he was cleaned during that time and you ve heard evidence from moments before and maybe moments after, but during that moment in time, he was sober and he knew and believed he wasn t didn t believe he was violating the law. that is so critical. that s that goes to the heart of their case. that is really that the depth of their case believe me when i say he did not know when this made me wonder when it comes to closing arguments. you can lean on a lot in terms of thematically and your closing. but for the defense, do lean on the lack of pinpointing him being on drugs at that moment with the jury or do you lean on more of the emotion that we have seen come out and the relate ability. they re not mutually exclusive. you can absolutely. you should lean on the fact that the evidence corroborates that he was doing drugs or addicted potentially trump is very vague. vague, but he was addicted to drugs at time a, b, and we ll say that the big gun possession and purchase was times c and maybe at time d, but a times c at that moment it wasn t. and even if even if you may believe he was this is a common problem that we all have to deal with them, families, and friends and people we love addiction is scary and frightening. and you lean on that too to paint that whole picture. what you re kind of pointing to this, the likelihood of a hung jury in this case is what do you think? i can t give you a certainly a number of really work that way, but it s much when we were talking about potential to hang during the trump case, there s no emotional component. there may have been a pleasure political component there, but there was no emotional. it didn t talk at your heartstrings and say, i know somebody who falsified records and they were really, really sad and terrible look i say, clutching cultural change. what you can say, i know somebody who had a horrible addiction and there are good, they re good people and a good person and it s disease may made really bad mistakes, but should they be held accountable and perpetuity for it? no. and that s the kind of thing that you would pull onto? that s really interesting. i m really curious as to how this all plays out. it s great to see you, jeremy. thank you so much. john wright this morning, donald trump will do something. no former president has ever done before. meet with his probation officer. this is all part of the process ahead of his sentencing next month soon as britain june grass is here. how is this process work? how is it going to work? brin yeah. john, like you just said, this is all part of the process. now, listen, it s customary after a guilty verdict, or if someone pleads guilty to go through this process shortly after that court proceeding, which of course, that happened in donald trump s world, just a couple of weeks ago. now, what s next? at customary as you ve just pointed out, is we re talking about the former president and head republican nominee being on the other end of this conversation with a probation officer, he ll also be in mar-a-lago in florida. typically any person that has pled guilty or is guilty of a crime has to actually come down to the courthouse just where he had his trial and meet with probation officer face-to-face. but this is going to happen over a virtual appointments with this probation officer, his attorney is also going to be present for at todd blanche, and that s not typical as well, but this, again, is customary. these are the questions that the probation officer is going to ask the former president to run right up a report and give that report to the judge, judge juan merchan, ahead of the sentencing and asks things about the background, about the former president s criminal history, his use of drugs, alcohol. also, there may be a question in there from the probation officer asking what the former president believes his sentencing should be, should it be lenient, should not be lenient. i mean they get to have that choice to say their own feelings about it too. so it could get quite interesting in this one-on-one conversation. and again, like i said, this is a report that s going to be filled out, given to the probation, are given to the judge rather, and it s just gonna be one factor that is part of the whole sentencing package that this judge can decide. remember, he is facing community 30 service up to possibly four years in prison for the guilty convictions that he just faced and that sentencing is set for july 11, but that meeting today with probation officer again happening over the computer or virtual appointment sometime today? wonder how we would answer the question. what sentence do you think? good receive that could be an interesting what brynn gingras us. to make a better life people aspire to be great in american saga, read it, are donald trump was on the campaign trail in battleground, nevada. and here was part of his message on immigration there s never been anything like is happening to our country. they had changing the fabric of our country. they re destroying our country. and nevada is being turned into a dumping ground and you are the hope country is being turned into a, an absolute dumping ground. the illegal immigrants are turning then they re turning at a level that nobody s ever seen before. they re fighting. our families donald trump also went on to slam president biden s new executive action at the southern border. and according to new cnn reporting, biden is considering a second move on immigration. this one good protect some undocumented spouses of american citizens from deportation. cnn s arlette saenz is at the white house for us with more on this. what are you learning about this possible? next move on. immigration and why president biden is doing it will sources have told cnn that the biden administration is considering a potential proposal so that would extend legal status to undocumented immigrants who are married to us citizens. officials are taking a look at an existing authority called parole in place, which essentially would shield undocumented immigrants who have us citizens as spouses from deportation and allow them to work in the country illegally while they pursue citizens sonship, it s estimated that this could impact anywhere from 750,000, 800,000 individuals. and it s a move that could appeal to latino voters states like arizona, nevada, and georgia. but at the same time, the administration is not just trying to shore up support among latino voters, but also progressives and immigration advocates who have grown quite frustrated with president biden s recent executive action, trying to clamp down on border crossings just last week, the president announced some measures that essentially shuts off the asylum process for migrants coming to the country illegally when to seek asylum once a certain threshold is met, that was a move that was really condemned by many progressive democrats who said that it is similar two policies invoked during the trump administration. and then there are groups like the aclu who are threatening to sue the administration to try to stop that plan from going it has gone into effect but really tried to halt it in its place. you ve had over the weekend homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas, defend the policy, pushing back on groups like the aclu, but oh, comes as president biden has been trying to show that he s taking action when it comes to immigration and border security. that is an issue that is really risen on the list of concerns for voters heading into november s election. but at the same time, we have both biden and trump trying to appeal to latino voters in key swing states. it comes as you have seen this narrowing in support between biden and trump is specifically on this issue of latino voters. if you take a look at a recent poll from them, the new york times and sienna college college, it found that the two men were nearly even with hispanic voters. that s a much shrinking of that margin compared to back in 2020. so both biden and trump i have been trying to make inroads with latino voters, especially in those critical bag battleground states like arizona and nevada, the biden campaign has really tried to paint, try pump as anti-immigrant over the weekend, they slammed the fact that he appeared with maricopa county sheriff or former maricopa county sheriff, joe our pio, who has really had some hardline immigration tactics. all of this coming as both men are trying to vie for that important latino vote, which could be critical for both of them in key swing states heading into november let thank you so much. john. all right. this morning, politico is reporting the vice president, kamala harris, is sizing up for potential competition. she made new comments about donald trump s possible running mix, focusing on their abortion record saying, quote, everyone on that list has supported a trump abortion ban in their state or as called for a national ban. in fact, many voted this week in the senate against the right to contraception. that s how far down the road they are with me this morning, republicans rogers, doug hi, democratic strategists simon rosenberg, simon first you that was the vice president volunteering. her opinion on these possible candidates and going right to the issue of abortion why well, there s no question that reproductive freedom and the stripping of rights and freedoms away from more than half the population from the women of america is going to be one of the central issues of this election. it was in 2022 because it is one of the most important issues in the country. i mean, we re seeing an extraordinary backsliding a fundamental rights and freedoms that are common throughout the modern world here in the united states. and it s putting not only is it stripping rights and freedoms away, but it s also putting tens of millions of women at risk when they become pregnant. and if they have a miscarriage and so i think you re going to see this issue continued to be central to everything that we talk about and it creates this basic contrast between a party that was fighting for freedom, an opportunity for the american people. and one that s trying to take those freedoms away so dug in the senate chuck schumer apparently this week, the senate majority leader will try to force a vote on guaranteeing the rights to ivf in vitro fertilization. all right? on the contrary, nationalizing that a little bit similar to the vote that he tried to have and did not pass guaranteeing a right to contraception what do you think republicans will du, when response to this? they didn t deal with the contraception when they thought that was political. will they take the same tactic here? well, you ll see some republicans peel off and support the bill, you ll see most republicans probably vote against it. it s john what we call as you know, a messaging bill. this is about campaign 2024. this is what the democrats want to talk about and why they feel that they re on the offense on this when they re on the defense on so many other issues, obviously, the economy inflation patient and the border being one of those. and it s why i think what arlette was talking about earlier is so important. this is election that s going to be won or lost on the margins. we talk about muslim voters in michigan. we talk about suburban women outside of phoenix, arizona, for instance, hispanic voters are critical for this election. i was in north carolina last week and when i was driving around through asheville and shelby, north carolina, i started to see mercado and hispanic grocery stores and things like that because it s a growing population. and i m telling republicans, if you re running for congress for governor, for president, you better focus on hispanic voters. you better make a real effort on it and spend money on hispanic media. it s correct critical. and this is one of the issues that will come up on this. but what we think about hispanic voters often gets tied in immigration and only immigration they care about every issue just as much as every other voter does. he, simon, let me ask you about a proposal that donald trump put forward when he was in nevada and this is something that i think a might appeal to a lot of workers, not just hispanic workers. first, but there are some in nevada who this appeals to the idea of no longer taxing tips. now, there are economic reasons and there are budget reasons why this is much more complicated than just saying it out loud. but i proposal like that, how attractive simon do you see that as being to voters? i mean, i think of the things that trump talked about this weekend. and when you when you think about hispanic voters are in the southwest, is that him bringing jaume or pio up on stage with him when he was in phoenix, was an extraordinary error. i mean, there is no a figure in the southwestern latino community who ve seen has been more anti-immigrant and anti hispanic. and joe are pi i ll and for trump to have voluntarily brought him up on stage, it was a reminder to this community about him wanting to affiliate with somebody who terrorized hispanic. hispanic families. in the end, phoenix for more than a decade. and i think that i know that there s this belief that trump is going to break through with hispanic voters. but what he has to overcome is that he is the most race racist, xenophobic figure in our modern politics. and i think this is going to be easy for us to discuss particularly when he s hanging out with guys like joe, our pile i want to shift years if i can, because in nevada, marjorie taylor greene, in a way compared donald trump, did jesus, there was another republican figure who did it and there s this song and it s making the rounds on tiktok big with the kids. that does the same thing which compares donald trump pretty overtly to jesus. i want to play a little bit of that i am the again, we ve been asking this morning, doug, what people s impressions are of this what is one to make of that? doug well, clearly it s crazy time, john, there s no there s no doubt about it, but i think donald trump benefits from us talking about the crazy time and not been focusing on those other issues that trump hi, there loses on or can gain from. when we talk about all the weird things that donald trump does. when we fact check the 37 lives that he told in a speech what we re not doing is talking about the issues that everyday americans care about they don t focus on this weirdness. and it is weird. they focus on the issues that impact them. they focus because on inflation and the economy, they focus on the border. and i think when we get distracted by all these weird things that donald trump does. and yes, simon is right. bolt spend time with you, our pio. we lose focus on those things that voters are telling us very loudly that they re concerned about very quickly send me your response to that. i m wondering if you agree with that well, i think i do think the election is going to be contested around the economy and health care and who s going to keep us safe and also, i think i m fundamental values. i think this issue of having a guy who now we know is committed sexual assault, who has defrauded the government of hundreds of millions of dollars, who is now 34 times a felon. i think these things are really going to matter. i mean, we know this from republicans like mitt romney who talk about this all the time, that he just can t support a republican who has been found to have committed sexual assault. so i do think into in addition to all the issues that doug is talking about which really matter, the issues of values, leadership integrity are also going to really matter in this election, right? simon rosenberg, doug hi what time is people behind the trending stories i ve got a lot of questions assignment would 40 cornish listen wherever you get your podcasts secretary of state antony blinken spoke moments ago in the middle east. he wasn t egypt and is now headed tosrael with a mission of pushing forward the hostage and ceasefire negotiations between israel and hamas. listen to this the best way, the most effective way to get everyone home, including the american hostages is through this proposal, is through the ceasefire deal. that s on the table right now. that s what we re focused on. that s what we re determined to see you achieved. secretary blinken will next be meeting with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, as well as benny gantz. but against designed sunday from israel s war cabinet and protests of netanyahu s handling of the war. this of course all happens just after the dramatic rescue operations saturday the brought home four israeli hostages after eight months in captivity in gaza. cnn s oren liebermann is in tel aviv force or what is the task for tony blinken now? kate, secretary of state antony blinken has to accomplish what the administration has been trying to do for months. and that s get to the point where they can announce that there is a ceasefire and a deal that would bring home the remaining hostages the problem is that hasn t gotten any closer over the weekend with israel s operation. quite the opposite. in fact, it may have moved even farther away. and there was not yet a finish line in sight before this weekend. so the challenge remains great here. as blinken is in egypt and he ll come here and it may even be more difficult with israel s political fracturing now with benny gantz, as you point out, war time, war cabinet, minister leaving the war cabinet and that makes it even more difficult to try to get get a deal in place here over the weekend, of course, on saturday, israel carried out a daylight raid into the part of the knew sayyed refugee camp that rescued four hostages. there was great joy here at that news and the us administration also welcoming the news of four hostage, hostage just that were rescued from a very densely populated area. but that of course, is the challenge in that operation the palestinian ministry of health in gaza says 274 palestinians were killed, hundreds more wounded. the idf disputes that it says there were less than 100 casualties. cnn cannot independently verify phi those numbers, but either way, it makes it one of the deadliest days in gaza in months. and that those sorts of major incidents have brought negotiations to a standstill. still, or at least created a major roadblock for them. and that s what blinken is stepping into here. meanwhile, just moments ago, the mother of one of the hostages spoke out a publicly saying how glad she wants to hold her son almog once again, after this rescue and calling on a hostage deal. but crucially remembering those moments that you had prayed for for so long last night i hit my fist full night s sleep in eight months my birthday wish is for all the hostages, families too. feel this way i m one of the lucky ones national security adviser, jake sullivan said that it s on hamas now to accept the deal, but it s not clear that israel is even in a position where it can accept the deal because far-right coalition members of prime minister benjamin netanyahu has government threatened to take down the government if he accepts the ceasefire deal that s on the table right now. huge task for 20 blinken ahead as he s about to head, they re great to see you or an thank you very much for the according. are with us now cnn military analysts, the former commanding general view us army in europe and the seventh army general mark hertling general, always great to see you. this is where the rescue operation took place on what was just telling likes about news, right? right there. we have this new video that or unreleased are was reporting on earlier, which we can see some of the details tells about how this operation was carried out. what do you see when you look at this general well, not much from the video john, to be honest with you, but i did read some reports from the israeli defense forces in terms of how this has to address, you went down what we had was one hostage in one building and in an apartment building, three of the others in another one, they had to make the decision the rescue force, a special operators had to make the decision of either going on in terms of a synchronized approach of hitting one building and then the next or simultaneous approach, which is extremely but called where you have to do both buildings at the same time. the reason for that is they were concerned about if they went into one building with the hostages and the other buildings be killed because they knew that israel was about to go in there. there were a lot of people around these hostages were being held by palestinian family 20 members that had been paid by hamas, which shows the support that hamas drives and influences others to give them. so you re talking about a very populated area in a un refugee camp region along with united nations people in that vicinity. so a lot of people who in these kind of situations when you re ever doing a hostage rescue against a bunch of terrorists, you don t know who are the terrorist and who aren t, who are just the local standby people, the folks who are honest observers, if you will. so it was a very difficult operation especially since it was done during the daylight and it also it tells me they probably got a whole lot of intelligence from a variety of factors to help them execute that. and of course, these are the, these are the hostages who were rescued. how repeatable is this for israel? is this the type of operation you could see them ever pulling off again? oh, absolutely these special operations teams train one of the things they train on is hostage rescue so what you re talking about is just these four hostages after they relieved, will be able to provide additional information which will help the israeli defense force but we ll talk about patterns of life the kinds of things that occurred while they were under captivity for eight months imagine that the fact that they were held by a family the fact that they probably had conversations with terrorists that might be something that they might consider important. but boy, when you give that information to the special operators, they know exactly hey, what to do with it, and it will help them put pieces of a puzzle together to potentially find other hostages as well. going to ask you for a quick answer on what s a very big subject general, the wall street journal s are forming on this effort by the united states to strike some kind of defense treaty with saudi arabia. the vitamin iteration is close to finalizing a treaty with sound what do you rabia that will commit the us to help defend the gulf nation as part of a long shot deal to encourage diplomatic ties between riyadh and israel. us in saudi arabian officials said, now leave the israel sayyed out of this. what would it mean from a military perspective to strike this kind of defense treaty with saudi arabia? well, we ve always had a very good partnership with saudi arabia. john, dating back to 1990 during desert shield, when we went into that area and it was part of the operation. but it s also caused a lot of problems for the saudi arabian government to have westerners in land of the holy mask. but you can t leave israel out of this. that s the sole purpose for this. they are the mr. blinken director burns from the cia are all trying to get saudi arabia to contribute forces to the end state of gaza and it s something that mr. netanyahu does not address. he doesn t and have a political end state to this war. he just has a military and state and it s one of the reasons that benny gantz resigns yesterday because he didn t see the political outcome of all of this fighting. he knows that as a former soldiers, a former chief of the israeli defense forces so there has to be some type of organization that will go into gaza and helps to cure it and provide security not only from a military perspective, but even such things as police and take away some of the power from hamas that has been there close to 20 years since 2006 when the last election was held. inside of gaza. and hamas was voted and refused to give elections after that. so there has to be middle eastern countries helping in there. and i think that s all part of the deal-making with saudi arabia. carl down clash, what s war is a continuation of politics by other means, you need the politics there at some point, benny gantz, the st. general hurtling great to see you. thank you so much. okay. it s time for siri to phone a friend, apparently, how a new partnership with openai could boost many aspects of apple devices. the here are all the family i need this sooners with kaitlan collins tonight at nine this morning apple is set to announce its latest software developments for the iphone at its worldwide developers conference, the main focus will that will bring the iphone into the world of artificial intelligence, seen as brian fung is with us with what we expect today, bryan yeah, i will. john today is all about showing apple is on top of the ai challenge. we re expecting the company to make a string of ai related announcements that could include, as you mentioned, a potential partnership with openai, the company behind chatgpt. you could also mean upgrades to siri that could turn it into more of a chat bot or make it better at doing tasks it s like retrieving old photos you ve taken. the stakes here are really high rivals like google are already using ai to help you draft emails and messages. so it s possible apple could unveil something similar to keep pace, but analysts say apple really needs to showcase something different, something with a wow factor to drive future iphone sales and to set it up for the long term. this isn t just about what will be in the next iphone, but potentially about whole new product categories that don t exist yet. now historically, wwdc has been about apple software because it s a conference for software developers. but whatever apple announces today could give us clues as to its future hardware plans because all of the new ai features will likely need a ton of computing power and developers will need to know how much computing power will have access to when they re designing their apps for the iphone or mac. so in addition to the product updates we get today, you can probably expect apple to outline a broader vision for its technology as ai becomes more widespread and one more thing to look out for is that apple has taken a strong stance on privacy and security. so it s going to be interesting to see how it applies that to some of the thorniest questions about ai, including how to handle fake responses, guard against bias, and respect other people s data and intellectual property. john interesting apple stock. we re looking at it right now down about half a percent, unclear whether that s in advance of today s announcement, a meeting, or whether it s more tied to the fed interest rates always are to tell brian make the roster of the women s olympic basketball team. and of course with that, there s a ton of reaction, some left scratching their heads caitlin clark definitively landing in the snow big deal category though, joining us right now is cnn contributor, kara champion for more on this carry. were you surprised that kaitlan didn t make the cut for the games? to be honest, i was surprised. i thought she would at least show up in some capacity, but i see i see the philosophy behind the committee s decision. to be honest. okay. no matter what would have happened with this particular supernova, this star known as caitlin clark, there would have been a debate i think that the committee decided to have all the debate before the olympic games so that we can get all of the distraction out of the way in team usa can go and do what they plan to do, which is break history. and when yet again, the eighth gold medal yeah. yeah. i was going to say kick button, take names later once they get to paris for everybody how caitlin clark responded to the news honestly, notice appointment like i think it just gives you something something to work for. you know, that s a dream, you know, hopefully one day i can be there and i think it s just a little more motivation you remember that and you know, hopefully in four years when four years comes back around, i can be there also want to play for everyone. how her coach responded the call on the bus and she texts me to let me know and, i just tried to keep our spirits. i mean, the thing she said was a coach they woke a monster which i thought was awesome which i also thought was awesome. what do you think of that i love that this is one thing i ll say about caitlin clark. i think everyone is having a debate over what s right and what s wrong and her focus has always been basketball. and this is why i love watching her play. this is why i love watching her game and she understands that you have to pay your dues. now, i will say this. the reason why i was shot kate, that they did not include her week because this is an opportunity to introduce this league, this sport, to a global audience. and you know, most people will be there to watch her. she put seats in the stands, so i get why there was all this pushback as to why isn t she there? but the fact that she said she woke a monster, i m looking forward to her after the break because, you know, they go they take a month off and they ll come back and play beginning in august. i m looking forward to her kicking butt. i m looking forward her to saying, okay, i see. you don t think that i deserve but i do deserve and i m i m thinking the only thing that can happen moving forward is that all this will do is make everything better for the league again, it s what time is it in the morning? i don t know where i am on which coast, but we re talking about when ball and it s amazing. i totally agree. we were just showing, let s try running it. the roster of the women who are going to play for team usa on the court, its star after star after star brittney griner s there it s like her story in and of itself, getting back to play in the olympic games is amazing. carrie let s just think about that. she was not more than a year ago in russia where we didn t know whether or not she d be back on united states soil within the next year or so. we forgot about that story. we have this star, and caitlin clark and let me tell you the right, this roster combined combined, there s over 18 wnba championships. we have mvps, final mvps. they re stacked. now, this still doesn t mean that she may not be an alternate, but she s keeping that close to the vest, whether or not she ll show up as an alternate and we don t know if that decidual ever be announced, going to protect okay. in speaking from the cliffs, american troops scaled on d-day for the fortunate heirs because of a legacy of these heroes, biden, earning comparisons to a republican ronald reagan are armies are here for only one purpose to protect and defend democracy. who 40 years ago was also selling voters on a second term so far, they re not sold according to one recent poll, independence favor trump over biden by 12 points, trump traveled to normandy d2 to mark the d-day 75th. today we remember those who fell, but after his speech attacking democrats in an interview her name, it s nervous magic that she s a nervous wreck. trump later came under fire for skipping a visit to a cemetery outside paris, reportedly calling the americans, buried their losers, something he s denied, but biden doesn t want people to forget telling campaign donors last week, he said they re losers and suckers who in the hell does he think he is in just a few hours, president biden is scheduled to visit that very cemetery outside paris before departing france the trump campaign. meanwhile, for its part calls the biden team desperate and says it s president biden, who s been disrespecting service members, manu, tausche in paris. thank you and now there s a lot to unpack, so let s break this all down with our great panel this morning. seung min kim of the associated press said harnden with the new york times, cnn s isaac dovere, and moralizing with npr. good morning. all right. great. thank you guys all for joining me today. a lot to discuss. that was an interesting trip over the last several days. what s interesting of course, as we all know that elections are typically decided by the economy. but this is an election, of course, it has two wars that are raging overseas. there are the biden has been making the case about democracy that says major selling point. this is how voters view how the issues that are important to them, economy number 130, 1% immigration number two, we ll talk about that in a second. presumably think democracy is 16%, but still the issues about ukraine and the israel-hamas war ranking lower down sudden when you cover the white house for the associated press, how does the biden campaign believed that these issues, foreign policy issues, may have an impact or do they not think you ll have much of an impact come november well, there s a lot contained within that foreign policy category. obviously, we know that one of their biggest weaknesses is the biden administration s handling of the war in gaza, which has really dissolute progressive disillusioned progressives and young voters when the, on the issue of democracy, which you can also put into this foreign policy category, as we have seen over the last several days with president biden and france, they believe that is a really fundamental issue that unites not only their coalition, but kit gets those independent voters, those so-called nikki haley voters that we have seen persistently turnout in these primaries. they believe that that is something that could attract them to their sayyed. and that s why you saw that s one of the reasons why you saw biden speaks so forcefully in these issues over the last several days, he never really said the words donald trump, but you see the political subtexts. you can t help but see that contrast that president biden and his aides are trying to implicitly make against you know, someone like donald trump who disparages the nato alliance, who has said, who has given the green light to putin to do whatever he wants and biden says that is not the way and you really invokes the memory of d-day invokes the the honor of these army rangers to say what would they ask us? to do? we they would ask us to. one quote was vanquish hateful ideologies and you can t help but think that president biden was thinking about donald trump at that moment and look, but you talked about trump versus biden on some of these issues, isn t voters view them according to recent quinnipiac paul preserving democracy as joe biden i ll play a lot seven points, but he is losing. he s underwater. and what the israel-hamas more in russia ukraine, war, morrow i mean, what do you explain that? because trump is barely talked about what is policy is on the israel-hamas war or on ukraine for oh, he s been pretty clear on ukraine. he was impeached the first time because he held up military aid to ukraine. but about how to end this war. yeah, you know, except for that he d ended on day one. what this one was the president. but what s interesting about that, the bad numbers on gaza are about internal democratic divisions that young people and progressives are angry with biden about that. i think that as if biden can succeed in conflating foreign policy in the threat-to-democracy, which is pretty high up on those list of concerns foreign policies way down. but democracy is way up. if you can conflate them, i think that can help them. and what really struck me about the president and europe the things he said could have been said by any president. in other words, of course, we re going to defend democracy and our allies. but because he s running again, someone on a pretty openly authoritarian platform who said nice things about putin disparaged nato allies said, we don t really deserve belong in ukraine. it s not our fight. that s what made this contrast. so explicit want to turn to what you have is what you, some breaking news here about a major issue that president is going to confront and dealing with immigration. right now, if you look at this is isaac story from this morning, biden nears huge next move on. immigrations. you tries to win over latinos in key states this past week, he moved forward in an executive action that angered a lot of folks on the left to try to clamp down on migrant crossings at the southern border. this time a shift. what is it? what are reporting is that the president is very close to moving forward on what would be the next round of executive actions. it would be to make work possible legally for long term undocumented immigrants who are married to americans it sounds like a small group. it s actually about 800,000 people, predominantly latino, when you think about the effect that this haves, it s not just on those people themselves, it s of course, on their spouses under kidd on their whole networks around them, that really makes a reverberating effect through millions of people. by the way, many of those people concentrated in arizona, nevada, georgia, places of the president has been behind a specialty with latinos. there s a political benefit here, but to folks who are been involved with this, this looks a lot to them like daqqa to 0.0 this time, 2012, it was june 15, 2012, barak obama created the daca program for people who had been brought here as children, unknowingly to, so that they could be legal status that to a lot of people was one of the turning point moments for obama s reelection campaign. there is a deep desire to replicate that both in terms of the policy effect here and in terms of the political effect. yeah the political factors. one thing we ll look at it right now. obviously, both polls showed that biden is struggling with on the issue of immigration is what it is major vulnerabilities, but had a biden s bars versus trump s supporters look at the idea of undocumented immigrants and whether they should be able to stay in the us legally if certain requirements are met, the recent pupils that 85% of biden supporters would are supportive of that. but just 32% of trump s supporters such a divide here, but it s clearly he s moving. you could say, to the left to try to placate those concerns is hearing one, how he s been heroin and certainly i think it reflects the kind of cross pressures he s feeling. when the number of issues not only immigration before in policy, this is a president who s tried to be everything to everyone in a lot of points. and with on both the border. and i think in foreign policy you ve seen the difference the gold teeth on that. i think that biden. okay. man, obviously with this is a strip that has flipped to a political liability and i think it s because democrats have not had an affirmative position on a lot of these issues. they have been able to criticize donald trump and republican actions, but there has not been a unified view from both top of the party to the base. well, what to do about immigration? and once you do a look abroad, but i think it s important that we don t see these issues as completely separate. when people talk about the economy too often bring up the fact that we re, that we re giving a lot of money into ukraine in israel when people talk about foreign policy, they ll bring up preserving democracy. these things are working together and also biden s perception, even things like age, the perception of him is not in the driver s seat of kind of events, but reacting to advance, it s something that happens on the foreign policy states that is contributing to his perception of unpopularity domestically. so these things are all kind of all working together to create a really difficult picture for this president. but i think what we re seeing now is the is the white house trying to take a more active role in shaping ahead of this debate so that by the time donald trump makes these arguments, he can point to very specific things that he has done recently specifically on the issue he has someone isaac mentioned about the impact that leads me like dog got the biden team looks kinda views this as darker. 22 of you covered this very closely at that time biden has struggled since then, with hispanic voters. this is having any impact. do you think with that key demographic or is this something similar in any way to what obama did more than a decade ago? well, i was i was talking with some some people who work in this space and there s so much anger after the border executive action that the president role that this week, that there s some thought that they might not even want to praise whatever affirmative action that the administration roles that that would help these undocumented immigrants. but i think another thing to remember too, is that president obama in 2014 rolled out something similar on executive action that was actually blocked by the supreme court. and it was never implemented. and now i m sure biden s team i m sure biden s lawyers are trying to make sure to craft this proposal in a way that they feel could withstand scrutiny. but first of all, the supreme court is a lot more conservative now than it was in 24 14. and he s already going to he could do these things either on the border or on that. it could get blocked by the courts. and then what does that do? then what does that do? those people who he s trying to thwart such a good point, but i m sure republicans will have something to say. this as well. all right coming up next is retribution on the ballot in november i ll dive into president trump s former president trump s new calls for revenge. and my reporting on how far his party is willing to go to back them up get a vote for trump. now i can make mono you 19th. cnn celebrate juneteenth deformities by john legend hadi lewbel, have schreiber tonight? did nine on cnn vice president kamala harris, making news overnight and going on the attack and even going a bit further than her boss taking aim at donald trump in the aftermath of his felony conviction. speaking to michigan democrats last night. here s called trump, a cheater and said he thinks he is above the law. she said that should be disqualifying for anyone who wants to be president of the united states. but how is the rest of the political world responding to the guilty verdict in my new reporting this week with any grayer, we speak to some of the most vulnerable republicans and democrats and find it s often the democrats unwilling to speak about the verdict while swing district republicans rally to the former president s defense and have no pumps with a convicted felon at the top of their ticket by panels back to discuss this isaac use put a lot time with kamala harris. what do you make of the fact that she s going further down again and then biden i in april, spent a bunch of time with her, wrote a piece about how she is really embracing the campaign and the campaign aspects of things which is looser, swinging harder at trump. she also at this book moment, it does not have a direct opponent, right? we re waiting for donald trump to pick a running mate. we ll see who it is, but that puts her in this position where she can continue just going at trumping going at it, him in a way that i think actually speaks to where a lot of the democratic voters would like more democrats to be the response from joe biden and from the biden campaign overall, to donald trump s conviction is just stays convicted felon, not really talk about the details of it, and not really talk about it that much even at all and that has struck a lot of democrats in the wider world as a sort of strange approach. given that they would like you to brace as you may get more part of your message their goal here is to beat donald trump and part of that would be from making him more disqualified in the eyes of voters, harris went right out that and by the way, she went right at it at a democratic party in michigan democratic party event rather, and michigan that is where i think we should expect to see her much more over the course of the next six reminds me of her presidential campaign, you know, justices on the ballot. common harris prosecuting the case against donald trump. these were all kind of ethos is that were part of the original premise of her as a politician. i think that is going to be the rozi place to isaac s point, to be two, to actually be able to make the case in a more direct way than joe biden. well, but at the same time, we haven t seen real returns from this and especially because on the public side, that conviction has not registered as a huge shift. we were following the news there are times polling about what actually moved people after the conviction. and you saw two points moving away from from trump to biden, but some of that was drop-off, just the interest in third-party, some of that. but the landscape is really messy around this conviction, but it s not telling the sea change and last year when we were talking to democrats about the premise of biden s campaign part of it was a belief that the legal problems will make donald trump inherently uncollectible. we have not seen that come to fruition and so what the harris is doing, i think it s to try to make that true in a way that democrats have not been able to kind of make that reality such so far, but their belief that they would inevitably happen has not come to pass. and we re going to dive a little deeper. about the impacts are not at bag will have on the numbers in the next segments. thanks for that good there was going to board a cub meanwhile, we ve heard to trump and just talk about retribution and what does that exit mean? who really knows, but this is what he s talking about. this is his messaging in the aftermath of his conviction will revenge, just take time. i will say there has births and sometimes revenge can be justified. feel i have to be honest. sometimes they can it s very terrible thing. it s a terrible precedent for our country. does that mean the next president does it to them? that s really the question. when this election is over, based on what they ve done, i would have every right to go after them i mean, sure. he s rallied the base in the aftermath of the conviction, but is at risk of going too far. there might be the thing that struck me about donald trump s campaign is how much it s been base oriented, how much he doesn t seem to care about those independence or nikki haley voters he s just really been ever since the beginning of the political yeah, this is his theory of the case. it s like a cable news business model. you don t have to a bigger audience, they just have to watch him 24/7 how much money you raised so that but but i think that the republican party has fallen in line. i mean, some of his supporters are calling for jailing alvin bragg, something for supporters are calling for executing the alvin bragg, but and to a person, there behind him, will it have a risk? certainly we haven t seen that in the polls so far, but this is a race that s going to be won or lost on the market a tiny little shift of voters could make a big difference in battleground states speaking up, falling in line yes, i spoke to i spoke to a number of the sum of those vulnerable republicans in the house. so people will represent districts that joe biden won some districts even by double-digits. and i asked them, you have a convicted felon at the top of the ticket. are you still going to support now that trump has been convicted, are you planning on supporting him in november versus joe biden yes. yeah i already he voted for him in the primary november the way this is about the american people. i have no issues in supporting donald trump for president the united states. he s the republican nominee on the republican yeah. a lot of my constituents are i think even more than supportive now because democrats went way too far. having a convicted felon and a district like yours hurt republicans. my district school, a very smart people with firm grasp reality. they can smell give a comment that last one was caused the tom king junior who did not respond. the other ones indicated they did look at another political universe you have a candidate who has some baggage. you re vulnerable member, you run away from, you don t want anything to do with them. this is the trump era when republicans are fine, he s a convicted felon. they ll side with his messaging when i was watching that, i was reminded a lot of the dynamics that we saw after the access hollywood tape in 2016 when we did see some on endorsements, but most of the party rally behind him because they know they re the republican lawmakers you talked to. they ve either accepted or maybe are residing to the fact that president trump is their party s nominee. and they know they cannot lose their base of supporters if they want to win they do need to attract the independent voters, which is why they say things like, well, we re supportive of trump, that we don t like the verdict and all that, but let s talk about the economy let s talk about immigration. that s how they tried to broaden their own coalition of voters. and i was just blast for the past manu, but remember when joe heck in 2016 shamelessly on endorse trump on live tv after access hollywood, i remember strategists at the time saying that s kind of where his campaign started going downhill because you really need to cole are really bring together, consolidate your own based first. yeah, good, good reference and then 2012, there s also but it was also the dynamic here is that there are republicans in the swing districts who are fine with endorsing trump than the love vulnerable democrats, vulnerable senate democrats in these purple-ish, even red states. and whether they are going to talk about the trump guilty verdict do you think that i will come back to trump verdict? was did they get this correct? the trump verdict, the jury in new york the jury decision, and they that s their that s their decision. and we ll see with an acceptance, did the jury get it right in new york? sayyed put out a statement. i ve said what i ve said. do you support that meantime, there are republican opponents have come and gone after them with ads. tim sheehy and montana put out an ad saying that jon tester, who s running against them standing on the attacking him for the verdict and sherrod brown is a bone-in tagging him over the verdict in these members don t want to talk about was that tell you well, look, i mean, that s montana now it s the very republican state and job bob casey s from pennsylvania. i think that that s trays and look, i think that this is the tension they re facing. look, i had a story a couple of days ago that was also a bad the biden campaign s outreach beginning to republicans and i think it is definitely the case that republican leaders, current republican leaders please do not want to have any sunlight between them and donald trump, but among a lot of former republican leaders, there is now some connections going on to the biden campaign. and the question that a lot of them raised to me is how many republicans looking voters are there out there who maybe don t want to say it publicly. but who once they go into the voting booth, pulled the curtain tight, we ll actually not vote for donald trump or even vote for joe biden. maybe skip it or vote. that is a huge question. for the rest of the campaign. all right, up next, our first hint is at how trump s verdict is sitting with voters will dive into this week s polling and hero why some voters could be and the brink of switching sides the cnn presidential debates, june 27th, nine live. i m cnn and whether it s having any impact at all on voters while new polling shows there are some small size of shifts. broadly speaking, it has not made much of a dent in trump s standing, at least not yet. new poll from fox news shows the former president still ahead several key states, except notably in virginia, where the poll shows the race is tied. and of course, president biden won virginia in 2020 by about ten points or panel is back just a little bit deeper than that fox news poll about how independence, what they view, this has an impact in these swing-state, the hush money verdict the guilty verdict their 29% of voters in virginia say it matters up to 44% in florida, then you have the doesn t matter, 68% in virginia, all the way down to 52%, say it doesn t matter now we don t know that that means whether they re going to actually vote or they will vote but it doesn t seem to be. again, not a game changer. look, we always said this was the weakest of all the cases against him. it turns out it s the only one that s probably going to happen before election day and most people say it s not going to change their votes. npr, pbs, marist had a poll, 60 something percent said it won t change their votes, but 17% said they would, and that matters in a battleground state. so it might happen around the edges, but the biden campaign has to figure out how to make it matter. i don t think they re very clear yet on the best way to do that instead, you had actually been speaking to some of these voters throughout the course of these legal cases in your podcasts, you talked to a voter about whether they would switch to biden. this was someone who had said they were going to vote for trump and now will they switch vote for biden now that he s a guilty guilty in this case? so i was thinking along the lines of the january 6. now i m comprising yup. if you went after my mat and you re able to get them on something like that. that might make me change my mind, but this being a big item on i m sorry. it just doesn t sway me. i think it was a crime i am that in another world, if he was another person and nobody would have touched it, would you? this? is an arizona republican voter. cells as mine hasn t changed. yeah, this is part of two groups we spoke to. the first, which includes cart, was people who had set in the october york times paul, that if trump was convicted of a crime, they would change their mind. they would start that they were trump supporters will be open the backing biden was about 7% of people. now, when we call it a lot of those folks back as new york times polling was doing over the last week, almost universally they were having added caveats to that opinion, say, oh, was a different case as kurt said, or maybe if it turned out or maybe the facts were more but they folks weren t really changing because because of this but when we call back to the majority of voters in the general national survey, you did see one to 2% of movement away from by, away from trump toward biden. and so that can to the point about margins make a small difference. but i would caution against saying this doesn t matter at all. donald trump s donald trump s legal problems have been ingested by most people well, and it s part of the reason democrats have done better and things like the midterms as far the reason joe biden has a narrative to tell swing voters in independence, because oftentimes it has come back to hurt donald trump. donald trump is a weak general election candidate, partially because of these things, all of the polling would tell us that republicans will be better served if someone else was at the top of the ticket, how ever because he s going up against another week candidate and joe biden relative to each other. he s still retaining that level of support. so that s what really came through in this poli. and it s not the people did not care about donald trump s baggage, is that it wasn t enough to overcome some of the unpopularity of joe biden. that s what we re seeing. that s a little more deeper rooted. i think some democrats expect, of course, the fact that a lot of these other cases almost certainly will not get reach a verdict november then it shows you that voter may not be swayed. we ll see, but i do want to turn to the other big criminal case. so hunter biden case, the president s son, there could be verdict this week. in fact, the instill question about whether hunter biden will testify. it seems unlikely he will in his own defense in this criminal case what s been we ll see what the fallout is depending on what the verdict ultimately is, what s been notable is there s been a shift a bit in trump s own messaging about this from 2022. now hunter, you got thrown out of the military. he was thrown out dishonorably discharged. that s not true. was it two years. and he didn t have a job until you became vice president. i feel very badly for them in terms of the addiction part of what they have, right now, because i understand the addiction world and i ve also not only a brother, i ve lost a lot of friends to addiction so suddenly he s changed his tune and hunter biden well, like many people saw that moment when the debate that followed that in 2020, when joe biden spoke very personally in viscerally about his son facing addiction and families of the face as one of joe biden s best moments in the campaign. donald trump seems to be responding to that. i think the other thing here is that this case is it s really complicated what happened with hunter biden here. it s not about drug use, it s about the gun charges related to drug use and trump s supporters are trump aides have said that they feel like this is not the kind of thing that they would like to be prosecuting the case on hunter on it doesn t get to the business dealings, it doesn t get to joe biden enriching himself. look, if you re going to get into complicated family dynamics with a lot of children the trump family has some you don t but speaking obviously says personal issue and the president, but politically zero concern in the biden camp about what a guilty verdict may mean for the president november they think that people will view these things separately. well, i think they re trying to make sure that these legal his legal hunters legal cases don t get conflated with what the present for the former president has been convicted of. and they are so different, obviously not only different facts, but hunter s a private citizen donald trump is the republican nominee. what what he does has a direct bearing on the american people, whereas janiot, you can i really argue that. but i think the democrats are really trying to make sure that in the eyes of the public that those two those two issues are kept separate. i think the concern among democrats is just the impact on president biden himself and he is a father. i this is his son going through very difficult moment and a moment of his life. he s got a lot going on this month. he s got the debate coming up. he s got another foreign trip later this week, and just that just weighing on him, i think that is the concern of mine. and democrats. course this past week, you would not pardon. sorry. if he is convicted all right. next is trump s search for a running mate narrowly new details from this week, including whether one of year when the presidential standard baer and his team intensify their scrutiny of a possible running mate, several potential trump vp picks have now received vetting materials and two of them, senator joe jd vance, and note dakota governor doug burgum joining trump on a west coast swing this week. trump s as you re announcing his choice at the republican national convention next month and fouls back. okay, mara, your crystal ball, where do you think that trump it lands here. i mean, there s obviously there s a list of running mates. you can see on your screen where it knows it s hard to make predictions, especially about the future and about, and about. look, this is the most normal part of donald trump. this is he picked mike pence last time. totally normal. he wanted the evangelical community. mike pence was the ambassador to that constituency. totally understandable in this case. he has a couple of choices. he can pick a person of color, reach out to minority voters or you can pick doug bergen, burgum and increase his credentials with the business community. some of some of whom are a little nervous about him, or he could double down on maga and go for a jd vance? yeah. what he s gonna do. i don t know. but in the past we know that he s done the normal thing. yeah. that would be a burgum pads speaking of burgum is how the washington post put it broken is viewed by some trump allies, is trying too hard, but trump seems to have genuine personal chemistry with them according to people familiar with the matter, i mean, trump also wants loyalty. obviously, there s anyone does a particularly trump loyalty. trump s all else pun intended. i find it interesting that they think, or they are some advisors think they re doug burgum is trying too hard because so many of these vp candidates are really auditioning without saying they re jacking for the position and you mentioned jd vance and burgum campaigning out with with president trump. jd vance was asked about this. you have tim scott, i believe spending $14 million on an ad campaign. they re doing a lot to try to get that vp slot. they re just not saying that. yeah. there s the question of does it help in other parts of the ticket, tim scott, maybe helps with black voters. trump just got to hello percent supportive blackboards in 2020, at least to phonic. she up with women. he just got 42%. he s gonna do better in both groups, but vice presidential candidates don t always change the equation. yeah, we often have this kind of discussion with them when we know this is going to be probably about the top of the ticket with it does du obviously set up a vice presidential debate between this person and vice president harris. but i think these kind of normal calculations is what donald trump is going through. what we can bet on is the show. he is announcing this as the republican national committee. he s hoping he s hosting an apprentice like trial that was at new hampshire after the primary and when he had people speak one by one and what felt like a live audition process? we can bet on the spectacle of it all, but i do think the kind of traditional political calculus is where a lot of these things, law, it s kind of surprising, actually to see the names live rubio on the list kind of more traditional republican figures. but i think it speaks to someone who feels like he s in a good position to win this election. and this thinking more about consolidation of the party at large, rather then more firebrand type methods could even jd vance isn t as maga as he could have gone over. some people were expecting last year in quickly as it who do you think that the biden team wants trump to pick? they would like someone who doesn t bring in a lot of votes from doug burgum, like are they scared i think that that is much more on people s minds, but i do think that one thing that will be notable here as we go through this drawn out process trump does. is that a lot of these people, doug burgum said that he would not do business with trump. marco rubio said people would come to regret going trump. a lot of these people used to say that trump was terrible yeah. weston. and up and coming virginia democrat who is diagnosed last year with the disease, sometimes called parkinson s on steroids. but that has not stopped her from making strides on the hill and making jokes in the process. cnn s capitol hill report or melania zona has the story it may shock you to hear this, but this is not my real voice. once a rising star in the democratic party, congresswoman jennifer waxen, flip house seat in 2018. i ve been saying since the beginning of this campaign that he s is coming to america and changes coming to virginia and that change came tonight. now, a rare brain disease has forced her into early retirement and robbed waxen of the ability to speak but that hasn t stopped her from using her voice. i hope i can show that even instability dating a diagnosis has this doesn t have to mean you are powerless and finding moments of levity and fund helps to last year at 56-years-old wac than was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy to have find incurable disease that impacts about 30,000 americans described as parkinson s on steroids psp affects the brain cells that control balance, walking, speech, and swallowing. we give are you polish shakes when it comes to illness progressive is not a good thing to be as her condition began to rapidly deteriorate, the congresswoman and mom of two learn to adapt last month, weapon became the first lawmaker to use a voice app is to deliver a speech on the house floor, a history-making moment that prompted an outpouring of support, psp makes it very difficult for me to speak and i use an assistive app so that you and our colleagues can understand me she also uses the app to participate in committee hearings. she shows up every time we have a committee hearings. and she represents her people and god bless her people she s representing a getting a hell of a deal with her and so i had to communicate with colleagues and staff in all of the congressional text chains that exist, like she is absolutely like top five funniest waxen isn t the only member of congress using assistive technology senator john fetterman relies on an app to help him process what he s hearing as he recovers from a stroke in my recovery was to the point where now it s really this fetterman was so touched by waxen story that he sent the congresswoman a personal note to let her know that she is not alone. she is inspiring people by being able to perform her job because a lot of million americans have to everyday tasks can still be a challenge for weston, the capitol hill campus has not historically been very ada friendly how have you? he found the institution? do you think it s been adequately equipped to handle people with disabilities? you measure notice how it accessible of place maybe until it s you who relies on the accessibility accommodations. and weston says some of her colleagues now treat her differently. it s especially frustrating and deploying when people mistake my speaking struggles for like cognitive ability. i ve had experiences where well-meaning colleagues always men have approached me seeing hi jennifer, it soon, so like, yeah, of course i know who you are. i ve seen you hear every day for the last five years, the chaotic speaker s race in october took an added one, weston who was forced to miss doctor s appointments because of the grueling schedule that was probably the worst i felt physically and emotionally since i was diagnosed but quitting early was not something like ever seriously he entertained before she leaves congress early next year, waxed as using her platform to raise awareness about brain diseases like psp she organized an advocacy week last month, while the senate recently passed her national plan to end parkinson s disease, she s an inspiration while many would have been discouraged or lost hope with a disease like this, she is endured. she has used her struggled to help others. and now the bill goes to the president s desk, a bipartisan bill named in her honor. what do you want your congressional legacy to be i hope that one day when we have eradicated parkinson s in parkinson s isms, paton leucine even though it was too late for her to help herself. she helped countless others pretty incredible story, thanks to my balloon is known for bringing is that today? that s it for inside politics sunday, you can
