The Other Regional Counter-Revolution: Iran's Role in the Shifting Political Landscape of the Middle East

The Other Regional Counter-Revolution: Iran’s Role in the Shifting Political Landscape of the Middle East

The last decade has seen historic political upheavals across the Middle East and North Africa: a tsunami of popular uprisings that have brought down several dictators and led to momentous transformations in political consciousness, if not always to democratic outcomes. But the last decade has also seen a concomitant counter-revolutionary roll-back across the region: authoritarian regimes, entrenched elites, ruling classes, deep states, and reactionary forces have marshalled considerable resources to torpedo these movements from below.[1]

resume funding for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) and push to ensure the rights of Palestinians.

Immigrant Journalists Reflect on DC Insurrection

Journalists Mark Kurlyandchik and Ali Harb talk share their perspectives regarding the Jan. 6 violence that erupted in Washington DC.
Watching the events of the violent coup attempt in Washington was hard for most of us. But, it was even harder for immigrants who left the countries of their birth fleeing oppressive regimes.
“It’s sort of the ultimate disappointment in a place that you thought was going to deliver better.” — Mark Kurlyandchik, Detroit Free Press
Many of them came to America because this was supposed to be a place with a strong democracy that would not easily fall into autocracy. This is a country of free and fair elections that result in peaceful transitions of power. But — at least for a few hours — what was flashing before our eyes on TV was more like the failed states many of these immigrants wanted to leave behind.

Washington braces for Biden inauguration amid heavy military presence

At the kickoff of his first campaign in 2015, US President Donald Trump promised to build a wall along the southern border and have Mexico pay for it. By the end of his term, security barriers had been erected across America's own capital, amid security concerns after his supporters stormed the Capitol building last week.
Days before President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration on 20 January, the normally bustling streets around major government institutions in Washington were largely deserted of motorists and pedestrians.
The humming of ventilation fans emitted from downtown buildings - usually drowned out by the sounds of the city - ruled over the prevailing silence, often interrupted by the sirens of emergency vehicles.
