Sundance at AFS - Sundance Brings This Year's Hottest Movies to AFS's New Drive-in Screen: Time for a Sundance at Austin Film Society - Screens

Users
Every year, at the end of January, it seems like Austin's film scene packs its collective bags and heads to Utah for the Sundance Film Festival. This year, as the pandemic rolls on, Sundance is coming to Austin with a special series of screenings and panels presented by the festival and Austin Film Society. "It all started last summer," said Holly Herrick, AFS head of film & creative media, "when they reached out to us and said, 'Look, we're trying to reimagine the festival.'"
There's a lot of history between AFS and Sundance, far beyond the annual trip many of the staff take to the mountains for a first glimpse of the new crop of American and global indie cinema. The two organizations have been collaborating for years, whether it be showing the festival's short film selections in the AFS Cinema, or helping connect Texas filmmakers with Sundance. "A lot of AFS Fellows have also gone through Sundance Institute Labs," said Herrick. "This year, that collaboration has only gotten closer."

Want to see "Wild Indian" and some of the other movies at the Sundance Film Festival (Jan. 28-Feb. 3)? This year, you don't have to go to Park City, Utah, to do it. (Thanks, COVID.)
As a result of the pandemic, the festival is mostly virtual, with limited showings around the country. In the Twin Cities, the six titles include Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr.'s debut film at 7:15 p.m. Jan. 30, as well as the family drama "Son of Monarchs"; the new end-of-the-world comedy from "Lola Versus" filmmakers Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones, "How It Ends"; a drama about a troubled woman, "The Blazing World," and the Oscar-touted drama about the life and death of Black Panther activist Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), "Judas and the Black Messiah."

The Sundance Film Festival will look a little differently this year.
The annual film festival is traditionally hosted every January in Park City, Utah, but in light of the current pandemic, has pivoted and will offer an online platform this year featuring seven days of premieres and events. Additionally, Sundance has also partnered with independent cinemas across the U.S. and beyond to safely host small, in-person events.
Among those cinemas chosen is Nashville's very own Belcourt Theatre. From

Wavelength, Producer Behind 'Farewell Amor' and 'Where's My Roy Cohn?,' Names Joe Plummer as President (EXCLUSIVE)

Wavelength, Producer Behind ‘Farewell Amor’ and ‘Where’s My Roy Cohn?,’ Names Joe Plummer as President (EXCLUSIVE)
Variety
1/13/2021
Wavelength, the New York-based indie studio behind Sundance players like “Where’s My Roy Cohn?” and “Farwell Amor,” has named producer Joe Plummer as president.
Founded by CEO Jenifer Westphal in 2015, the company recently saw Plummer serving as supervising producer across the slate. As president, he will oversee operations and spearhead development, production and investment efforts across both the film division and the newly-launched commercial division. He’s also been elevated to executive producer across all titles.
More from Variety
“At Wavelength, I have had the opportunity to produce ground-breaking and beautiful films and to build an unparalleled team, I’m beyond excited about what Wavelength has planned for the future,”  Plummer said. “In my role as President, I will continue to develop our slate with Jen while expanding our efforts to launch emerging filmmakers and growing our commercial and branded work.”

The Belcourt to Bring Back Drive-In for Sundance Film Festival Series

How It Ends
“It’s a very weird year to try and write a preview for a film section,” Belcourt programming director Toby Leonard tells the
Scene, empathetically. He goes on to describe conversations he’s had with friends and colleagues in the world of independent film distribution lately. “Every conversation at some point is like, ‘Look, anything can still change at any given time, with a couple of weeks’ notice, frankly.’ ”
Leonard’s widely beloved Hillsboro Village theater knows that all too well. Back in November, the Belcourt reopened for in-person screenings with limited capacity and a slew of COVID-19 safety precautions in place. The theater closed up shop and went back to virtual screenings only on Jan. 1, however, citing Tennessee’s post-Thanksgiving spike in COVID cases.

AFS Invites You to a Sundance at Pioneer Farms

If you can’t go to Utah, then Utah will just come to you. Last month, Austin Film Society announced it would be partnering with the Sundance Film Festival for this year’s event, and now it’s announced a line-up of drive-in screenings and special online events with a Texas twist.

As the festival (often seen as the kick-off to the annual film calendar) has had to go virtual this year, it’s also selected a series of partner organizations like AFS around the country to act as satellite venues. Yet while AFS Cinema is still closed, the team has already been experimenting with drive-in screenings at Jordan Bachman Pioneer Farms. Today sees the scheduling of five Sundance titles – three narrative features and two documentaries – across four nights (Jan. 28-Feb. 1), all from the comfort of your own car.

Sundance Adds First Features by Robin Wright, Rebecca Hall to 2021 Edition

'Passing'
The indie film showcase's pandemic-era program also has directorial debuts by Jerrod Carmichael, Pascual Sisto and Questlove with his Black Woodstock documentary.
As Sundance director Tabitha Jackson's reign at the indie film festival gets well underway, the marquee indie U.S. film showcase has gone mostly online with a pandemic-era discovery lineup filled with work by women and BIPOC directors and more than half the 2021 program shot by first-time helmers.
For Jackson, the focus on debut feature directors underlines how, despite the COVID-19 crisis pausing film production in Hollywood and upending planning for Sundance's upcoming Jan. 28 to Feb. 3, 2021, edition, the marquee festival isn't playing it safe as it doubles down on revealing new independent voices to the world.
