2019 in Photos: Impacts from Environmental Rollbacks and the Growing Climate Activism

DeSmog
Dec 23, 2019 @ 14:23
Here is a selection of photos I shot for DeSmog in 2019, another year when arguably not enough collective action was taken to protect the planet from global warming.
Throughout 2019 the Trump administration continued to roll back environmental standards. Meanwhile, advocacy groups and activists ramped up the battle for clean air and water and a livable climate.
Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teen who inspired the school climate strikes movement, visited New York in September, inspiring millions worldwide to take to the streets calling for climate action.
Yet in Louisiana and the Ohio Valley, the petrochemical industry, fed by fracked natural gas, has continued to expand, moving the U.S. further away from preventing catastrophic impacts from climate change.

A lawmaker in Brussels is warning that a free-trade deal being negotiated with Australia won’t be ratified by the European Union until it does more to reduce its emissions, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Thursday.
It cited Kathleen van Brempt saying an agreement was contingent on “a clear vision” from Australia on “when and how they will become climate neutral and by when and how they will phase out of coal.”

In another sign of its resolve to push countries around the world to step up their climate efforts, the European Parliament adopted a non-binding resolution calling on the EU to propose a carbon levy on products from countries lacking serious pollution reduction programs, the ABC said. The European Commission plans to unveil in June the details of the so-called carbon border adjustment mechanism, which is initially set to apply to a narrow range of imported goods, most likely power, cement and steel.

Hungary to install solar at site of last coal plant as it fast-tracks coal exit

10 March 2021
Hungary has become the seventh EU country to plan a coal phase-out by 2025, and the sixth European country to bring forward its coal phase-out plan after announcing it will bring forward the closure of its last coal generator and partially replace it with a solar farm.
Hungary’s Secretary of State for the Development of Circular Economy, Energy and Climate Policy, Attila Steiner, announced at a meeting of the Powering Past Coal Alliance last week that Hungary would bring forward its coal phase-out plan by five years, from 2030 to 2025.
The Hungarian President, János Áder, originally announced at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York in 2019 that Hungary would phase out all coal-fired electricity generation by 2030, where he announced plans to increase its solar power capacity ten times by 2030.

Hungary is now the sixth European country to bring forward its coal phaseout plan, announcing that it will shut its last remaining coal plant in 2025. Meanwhile Poland says its first nuclear power unit will be built in Gdansk and the second one probably at the site of its Belchatów coal plant.

Hungarian President János Áder announced the country’s original plan to exit coal by 2030 at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York in September 2019. He said Hungary would simultaneously increase its solar power capacity ten times and expand the capacity of its nuclear power plants. These efforts would mean that 90% of Hungary’s electricity production will be carbon-free within a decade, he said.
