Floyd Cooper, illustrator of Black life for children, dies at 65

Floyd Cooper, illustrator of Black life for children, dies at 65
In this book Mr. Cooper illustrated the story of enslaved people who built the White House.
by Alex Vadukul
(NYT NEWS SERVICE)
.- Floyd Cooper, a celebrated children’s book illustrator who explored the African American experience in stories rooted in history, like one about a boy in Alabama in 1955 trying to comprehend why a Black woman on his bus refused to give up her seat to a white passenger, died July 15 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He was 65.
His wife, Velma Cooper, said the cause was cancer.
Over 30 years and some 100 titles, Cooper illustrated children’s stories that not only carried his earthy and golden pastel impressions of Black life, but that also strived to recount chapters of African American history that he felt weren’t taught enough in classrooms — if they were taught at all.

Santa Rosa Eases Masks Policy In Schools

Credit Santa Rosa County School Board
The Santa Rosa County School Board this morning eased its mask policy and is now "recommending" that face coverings be worn.
The unanimous vote followed about 45 minutes of county residents objecting to the former policy, which mandated masks in county schools. Superintendent Dr. Karen Barber said the recommendation was based on an advisory Thursday from Surgeon General Scott Rivkees, lifting mask-wearing and social distancing guidelines.
Board member Linda Sanborn was absent from the 8 a.m. special meeting. Voting in favor were board members Elizabeth Hewey, Carol Boston, Charles Elliott and Chairwoman Wei Ueberschaer.
Prior to the vote, more than a dozen residents went to the lectern to encourage eliminating masks in schools. Some questioned the science behind wearing masks; others said children are being hurt by being forced to wear masks.

The school boundaries of the new East Bay K-8 school have been finalized and will affect the zones of six other Navarre public schools.
The Santa Rosa County School Board on Tuesday evening approved the new boundaries, which will go into effect when the $40 million school opens for the 2021-2022 school year. The new school will relieve overcrowding at other nearby schools.
With the new school, the zones of Holley Navarre Intermediate, which is currently at 93% of its capacity, Holley Navarre Middle at 102%, Holley Navarre Primary at 93%, West Navarre Intermediate at 94%, West Navarre Primary at 104% and Woodlawn Beach Middle at 94% all had to be adjusted as well.
