Volunteers conduct 23rd annual Christmas Bird Counts
The 23rd annual Christmas Bird Counts for Cranbrook and Kimberley were held on December 26, 2020, and January 3, 2021.
On Count Day, teams of counters cover as much of a specified 24-kilometre circle as possible to tally all the birds they see. Also, Feeder Counters watch their yards, recording the various species and counting the maximum number of individuals seen at one time.
Count Week extends three days before and after Count Day. Any species not seen on Count Day but seen during Count Week can be included in the official report to Bird Studies Canada/National Audubon Society. The number of individuals of Count Week species are not added to the count tally.

What do a Northern Shrike, Blue Jay and Bald Eagle have in common? They were all counted this year as part of the Wabamun Christmas Bird Count.
Bird watchers and nature enthusiasts across Parkland County took to nearby trails, backyards and local fields to count birds as part of the annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), a program of the National Audubon Society, managed by Birds Canada.

BIRDWATCH: 2020, the year that was in birdwatching in the Upper Ottawa Valley

Article content
As New Year’s Day is close by and with the passing of 2020, it is time for my annual year end bird report. Despite the onset of COVID-19, the birds continued to come and go in our area. This past year we experienced nine rare birds and at least eight scarce birds.
The months of January and February are usually good for feeder watching, but this past winter there was a lack of northern migrants, especially Common Redpolls, Pine Siskins, and both Evening and Pine Grosbeaks. However, the owl population was quite active, especially Snowy and Barred Owls. There was also an unusually high number of over-wintering Robins.

Cheyenne Bottoms, Quivira complete Christmas Bird Counts
A pine siskin is pictured on a tree in central Kansas. Pam Martin with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks noted the species isn’t common in this area but she’s seen as many as 100 at her home feeders periodically since October. A total of 125 pine siskins were sighted during the Christmas Bird Count at Cheyenne Bottoms.
A mild start to winter would normally bring a flock of bird watchers to Cheyenne Bottoms and the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge for the annual Christmas Bird Count – but this was no normal year. Although humans have had to forego social gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic, the birds have not. A record 97 species were documented at the Bottoms – a number matched at Quivira.

Audubon Christmas Bird Count: 121 Years and Counting

Jeff and Allison Wells

The day started with the temperature in the single digits. It was the day of the 121
st annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC). The CBCs take place in the period spanning from mid-December through early January. The count was started as a sort of protest to a practice known as the Christmas hunt, when hunters would go out around the holidays and see how many birds (and presumably other creatures as well) they could shoot. Frank Chapman--a prominent ornithologist, conservationist, and writer/editor who published an early wildlife conservation magazine—invited his readers in 1900 to begin a tradition of counting rather than hunting birds around the holiday season. Twenty-seven people participated in 25 counts that first year.

Issues Of The Environment: Bird Watching Grows In Popularity During Pandemic

Overview
2020 has been a slow year for many industries, but hobbies like bird watching--safely be accomplished while mask-wearing and social distancing--have gotten a huge boost.  Sales of birding supplies, like binoculars, feeders, field guides, etc... are stronger than ever.
Not only are there more birders out there this year, birding in Southeast Michigan in 2020 is better than usual due to an irruption year, where many species not normally found in our region have been sighted, due to optimal nesting success and an ensuing expansion of population territory.
The influx of new birders into the field is a boon for conservation groups that track population numbers through reported sightings by volunteers.  The National Audubon Society protects birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow, throughout the Americas using science, advocacy, education, and on-the-ground, conservation, and they are calling all birders to help with counts.

Annual bird count held again at SCICON

The Audubon Society’s annual bird count wasn't going to be missed this year. Early Saturday morning, a group of nearly 10 people met at SCICON to count the birds as part of a collective international effort to track the bird populations globally.
For three weeks, in December and early January, bird watchers around the globe go out into nature to count and log different species of birds.
Nancy Bruce, Lead Teacher for SCICON, explained the SCICON count, as well as the Circle J Ranch count that happened later Saturday afternoon, were part of a larger effort of the Springville Christmas Bird Count Circle that encompasses all of the land area in a 7.5 mile radius of the Springville area.
