Kissimmee, Florida: Tax preparer Joseph Amaya has been sentenced to a year in prison for aiding and assisting in the preparation of false returns.
From 2014 through about 2018, Amaya co-owned and managed the tax prep business Tax Machine. Amaya knowingly prepared and filed and trained employees to prepare and file numerous false and fraudulent returns on behalf of clients. He and his employees created bogus expenses or deliberately overstated such deductible expenses as unreimbursed employee expenses, gas, mileage, medical and dental expenses, and gifts to charity. Amaya also trained employees to include false claims of net business losses on returns. Tax loss was some $1.6 million.

SAULT STE. MARIE The Bay Mills Indian Community and Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians announced their Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Tribal Response Plans.
These plans were announced on Tuesday during an event at Kewadin Casino in the Sault. The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Tribal Response Plans are part of a broader initiative by the U.S. Department of Justice, which was created through congressional action, including Savanna’s Act and Not Invisible Act.
“In our Anishinaabe Biimaadziwin, life is sacred. Everyone who is a victim of crime, murdered or missing is someone’s loved one. Regardless of the circumstances, they deserve our best efforts to prevent, rescue and recover them, said Sault Tribe Chairperson Aaron Payment. The MMIP protocol is an affirmative step in this direction. I appreciate our Sault Tribe and Bay Mills comprehensive team effort in creating a model we intend to share with other tribes.

Michigan asparagus is here

Adams brings with her decades of experience in agriculture, both on a state and national level.
“I have served in and around state government for nearly my entire career, 25 years or so,” she said in a recent interview.
Recruited to the USDA by former Under Secretary, Bill Northey, where she served as his Chief of Staff in a non-career capacity, Adams said the experience created strong connections.
“Bill and I knew one another when he was Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture and I was Michigan’s Director of Agriculture. During my nearly three years of service, I flew back and forth to Washington D.C. each week while my husband stayed here, in the Lansing area. As a retired combat soldier, my husband saw my work (with the USDA) as a deployment.”

AN IMPORTANT NEW OPTION FOR FINANCING AFFORDABLE HOUSING
The federal “9%” Housing Tax Credit (HTC) program, designed to finance up to 70% of qualified development costs, has for decades been the principal engine for the financing of low income housing in the United States. HTCs function like grants because the return to investors comes from the credits they take against their federal income tax liability over a ten-year period. Unfortunately, there is a limited supply of 9% HTCs and the allocation process, administered by state housing agencies, is highly competitive.
While some tribally-designated housing entities (TDHEs) have been successful in obtaining 9% HTCs, most have not. Demand for the 9% HTCs far outstrips supply and many states’ criteria give preference to urban developments, making it difficult for tribes to file successful applications. Tribes unable to access the 9% HTC program have incorrectly assumed that they have no options. While Indian country’s awareness of the 9% HTC has steadily grown in recent decades, the less competitive “4%” HTC program remains largely unknown.

New uses for cherry pits makes landfilling a "waste of a waste" | Great Lakes EchoGreat Lakes Echo

Capital News Service
Michigan’s cherry industry may have a way to make money from, of all things, the pits.
And to make soil more productive.
And to reduce toxic metals, such as lead and arsenic, in contaminated water.
Converting waste cherry pits for useful purposes could lower costs for processors and reduce the industry’s environmental impact by avoiding the need to dump the pits into landfills, according to a new study by Cornell University researchers.
There’s a growing realization that “disposing of homogeneous waste like this is a waste of a waste. Landfilling it seems kind of stupid in this day and age,” said study coauthor Jillian Goldfarb, a professor in Cornell’s Biological & Environmental Engineering Department.
