99 Ranch Market Brings Asian Inspiration to Arizona

PG Exclusive: Look inside the grocer’s new Phoenix area store
Editorial Director, Grocery Group
99 Ranch vice chairman Jonson Chen is flanked by Jay Sears, left, and Steven Alvis, right, co-founders and managing partners at NewQuest properties, a Houston-based commercial real estate firm focused on Asian-anchored shopping centers.
Leading Asian-focused retailer 99 Ranch Market received a warm welcome from Phoenix area residents on May 29 when it entered the market with a 44,000-square-foot store.
Located in Chandler, Ariz., near North Dobson Road and West Chandler Boulevard, the store is the first 99 Ranch Market to open this year and the company’s 54th location overall. Highlights of the store include a live and frozen seafood department that features more than 400 products along with services such as complimentary cleaning, frying and steaming. There is also a full service bakery, hot deli and food court branded as Eat Up!, that contains concepts such as Nine Wings, Veggie Village, Jin Tofu Village and other future concepts.

The Biggest Rooftop Restaurant in Arizona, 99 Ranch Market, and More Food News

The Global Ambassador Hotel
The Global Ambassador Hotel Will Have a Huge Rooftop Restaurant
Sam Fox, the restaurateur behind Fox Restaurant Concepts (Culinary Dropout, Wildflower, Zinburger, etc.), is getting into the hotel business. The Global Ambassador will be a 141-room luxury hotel at 4455 East Camelback Road. But with lodging comes dining, and Global will offer five original dining venues, including an 18,000 square foot rooftop restaurant yielding killer views of Camelback Mountain. This will apparently be the largest rooftop restaurant in the state upon opening in fall 2023.
The Tacos Chiwas People Pop Off Cocina Chiwas
Tempe is awash in taco joints. But that doesn’t mean its residents aren’t stoked to hear about Cocina Chiwas opening in the east Valley city sometime in 2022. The owners of Chiwas Tacos, Nadia Holguin and Armando Hernandez, are opening the new concept, which focuses on entrees from Sonora, Chihuahua, and Sinaloa. Cocina Chiwas will be one of the dining options at Culdesac Tempe — a 1,000 resident, car-free neighborhood in the works between McClintock and Price drives and Apache Boulevard.

7 new restaurants to try in Chandler while waiting for 99 Ranch Market

View Comments
The already booming Asian food scene in the East Valley is about to get an even bigger boost when 99 Ranch Market opens its doors, anchoring a Chandler shopping center that's set to bring more restaurants in.
Several other restaurants have already popped up in Chandler in recent months, including the first Arizona outpost for a buzzy ramen chain, a juice bar, and small shop serving Cambodian and Arab to-go food.
Please note that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, updated its guidelines April 27. It recommends people wear masks in indoor public settings. Fully vaccinated people don't need to wear masks at outdoor restaurants with friends from multiple households.

A Field Guide to Vegan Dining in Metro Phoenix in 2021

These days, the Valley’s restaurant scene has gotten pretty good at embracing diners' dietary restrictions and decisions. You can now be a vegan here or indulge in a plant-based diet, and eat pretty well.
Veganism, in short, means abstaining from animal food products. Among the distinctions from vegetarianism are that vegans also skip additional products like eggs, dairy, and honey. For an added perspective on the subject, we turned to Michelle Dudash, a chef, registered dietitian, and cookbook author formerly based in Scottsdale. Dudash shared a few pointers for vegan diners in the Phoenix area.
For those thinking about making the change, “start gradually,” Dudash says. “You don't have to go all or nothing to enjoy the health benefits of less meat. Your taste buds may take an adjustment period. And for your intestinal tract, too, it's in your best interest to go gradually to prevent discomfort while adjusting to more plants.”
