Jul. 14—If the University of South Carolina moves forward with renaming several buildings on its campus whose namesakes are being re-examined with the passage of time, several prominent African Americans could be set to grace university buildings instead.
The university history subcommittee of the commission examining building names agreed this week on 14 names of African Americans who could have buildings named after them if names are changed, according to a preliminary report. Those are:

In this crisply written, well-researched book, Lesley Blume, a journalist and biographer, tells the fascinating story of the background to John Hersey’s pathbreaking article “Hiroshima,” and of its extraordinary impact upon the world.
In 1945, although only 30 years of age, Hersey was a very prominent war correspondent for
Time magazine—a key part of publisher Henry Luce’s magazine empire—and living in the fast lane.  That year, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his novel,
A Bell for Adano, which had already been adapted into a movie and a Broadway play.  Born the son of missionaries in China, Hersey had been educated at upper class, elite institutions, including the Hotchkiss School, Yale, and Cambridge.  During the war, Hersey’s wife, Frances Ann, a former lover of young Lieutenant John F. Kennedy, arranged for the three of them to get together over dinner.  Kennedy impressed Hersey with the story of how he saved his surviving crew members after a Japanese destroyer rammed his boat, PT-109.  This led to a dramatic article by Hersey on the subject—one rejected by the Luce publications but published by the

G. Gordon Liddy, Mastermind Behind Watergate Burglary, Dies at 90
Unlike other defendants in the scandal that brought down Richard Nixon, Mr. Liddy refused to testify and drew the longest prison term.
G. Gordon Liddy, a cloak-and-dagger lawyer who masterminded dirty tricks for the White House and concocted the bungled burglary that led to the Watergate scandal and the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon in 1974, died on Tuesday in Mount Vernon, Va. He was 90.
His death, at the home of his daughter Alexandra Liddy Bourne, was confirmed by his son Thomas P. Liddy, who said that his father had Parkinson’s disease and had been in declining health.

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – Edward “Ed” Edgar Seely passed away peacefully at home on March 4, 2021, in Upper Lake of natural causes in the care of his children.
He was born on Nov. 3, 1932, in San Jose, California, to Edward M. and Mildred E. Seely. His parents grew pears in San Jose until 1955 then purchased the Lewis R. Dorn pear orchard in Upper Lake where Seely Orchard and Seely Farm Stand on Highway 20 became local landmarks.
He graduated from Santa Clara High School and received a two-year certificate in agriculture and pomology from UC Davis in 1953. He was drafted into the Navy and served at Hunters Point Naval Yard in San Francisco.
