An early morning shooting in Highland Park on Friday resulted in three teens with gunshot wounds, one of them dead at the scene. His name is Lamaruie Gathings, a 17-year-old whose parents claim he was asleep around 2 a.m. that morning. Roughly two hours later, they got a call they say changed their lives forever. "My son was found murdered Friday morning approximately three or four o'clock in the morning," said Marcus Collins, Lamaruie’s step-dad.Metro police were called to old park boulevard at 3:45 am on reports of a shooting. When they got there the other two teens were transported to the hospital. An investigation into the homicide was launched at that moment. Gathings’ family was notified of the incident and was asked to identify the body. After doing so, Collins said the communication between them and LMPD went quiet. He claims the family attempted to call detectives on plenty of occasions to find out more but it proved to be unsuccessful. "Why hasn't anybody talk to me? I still don't know nothing," said Latasha Earsery-Collins, Gathings' mom. "All I know is, at 2 o'clock in the morning when I got up to use the restroom, my child was in his room asleep. I got up at 4:30 a.m to go to work, and my child was gone."The family says they're losing faith in LMPD, because they feel as if they’re left having to do the work themselves. They've taken to social media to search for more information about that night. Scrolling through pages, reading speculation posts from people in the community as they work to piece it all together. "I can't believe everything on social media, I just want to believe the truth about whatever the detectives find out," said Marcus Collins. "However, I don't know, because I'm not being talked to by anyone."LMPD officials told WLKY they're working to get to the bottom of the case, but at this time the family claims they have not been told if there are any suspects or an idea behind a motive."My son, he wasn't a criminal," said Marcus Collins. "He didn't have a record, no fingerprints, no mugshots or nothing, Just an honest kid."For now the family is hoping someone reaches out with anything helpful that can give them an idea about the moments before Gathings was shot and killed."I don't know nothing," said Earsery-Collins. "I need to know. If anybody knows anything please let me know."LMPD has had to deal with more than 80 homicides to date this year, so far, only 25 of them have been solved.
