Myanmar’s military regime formed an advisory board to its State Administrative Council (SAC) on Thursday, and one of its seven members is a United States citizen, despite the fact that the US has imposed sanctions on coup leaders.
Dr. Salai (Andrew) Ngun Cung Lian, a United States citizen, is former legal counsel for the defunct Myanmar Peace Center and Rakhine State Inquiry Commission under the President U Thein Sein administration from 2012 to 2015.

People in Myanmar protesting against this month’s military coup have faced arrests, curfews and some internet blackouts for several days now.
But despite those challenges, they have been going out in huge numbers to make their voices heard.
Tens of thousands on Saturday rallied to demand a return to civilian rule and the release of deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest.
Airline staff, health workers and school teachers are among groups who have joined the marches.
There have been a number of detentions of military government critics during overnight raids. Meanwhile, police have increased their crackdown on large gatherings, which they say violate COVID-19 restrictions.

Myanmar's new state council starts work, more emergency plans unveiled
Myanmar's newly installed State Administration Council, led by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, began governing the country on Wednesday-two days after a yearlong state of emergency was declared.
The new authority's start to work came as some officials were allowed to return home after being detained.
Sources from the National League for Democracy, or NLD, and the military said State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint were in good health. They were among those detained on Monday.

This week's coup in Myanmar risks resurrecting the troubled nation's international pariah status and destroys a civilian power-sharing agreement where the generals still maintained huge control, leaving many wondering why the military took such a drastic step now.
The sight of soldiers with rifles back on the streets of Naypyidaw -- and democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi spirited back into detention -- has conjured up memories of Myanmar's darkest days during 49 years of junta rule.
After a 10-year experiment with moving towards a more democratic system, the generals are back in charge, sparking a chorus of international condemnation and the threat of renewed sanctions.

US foreign policy under new President Joseph Biden will be centered on promoting democracy and human rights around the world, Antony Blinken, the administration’s nominee for secretary of state, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during his confirmation hearing in Washington on Jan. 19. Unlike Republican President Donald Trump, the new Democratic administration is likely to make human rights its top priority in dealing with Myanmar.
