HOTorNOT: The forgotten website that shaped the internet

The forgotten joke website influenced YouTube, Twitter, Tinder, and so much more
Before MySpace, before Facebook, before Twitter, before YouTube, before Instagram, before Tinder — there was HOTorNOT.
Created on a lark in 2000, HOTorNOT became what we’d now call an overnight viral hit by letting people upload pictures of themselves to the internet so total strangers could rate their attractiveness on a scale of 1 to 10. Twenty years later, it’s a conceit that smacks of the juvenile “edginess” of the early web. It's now seen at best as superficial and crass, at worst as problematic and potentially offensive. However, the deeper you dive into HOTorNOT’s history, the more surprised you'll be by the thoughtfulness bubbling below its shallow surface — and its fundamental impact on internet history.

What to and what not to stream this March

March 4, 2021 in Film, Lifestyle
“Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood” provides a refreshing Irish spin to the slasher genre. Photo from IMDb.
Reading this, it will be obvious that I’ve never created a streaming guide, much less anything themed for March. Instead of a selection consisting entirely of recommendations, take this as your opportunity to wonder what goes on in curating circles to produce some of these dumpster fires of streaming selections. But to make it worth your while, I’ll also include additions that I’m excited or curious about for this pandemic-anniversary month.
As an aside, I don’t care where they are or what I have to buy, but I’ll be marathoning the murderous “Leprechaun” slasher series in a green-food-induced haze this month, maybe stopping after “Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood.”

The Fire that consumes the memory of Amalek [personal photos MDMD]
I had a delightful moment today, practicing tele-psychiatry with a sweet ADD-ish patient who recently moved cross country and wants me to continue  prescribing for her. It’s a jerry-rigged set-up, so we’ll see. Meanwhile, after we struggled to get her on Zoom and ended up using the phone, I ascertained that she was doing quite well. Her anxiety had abated. I checked my notes and saw that we’d scrubbed the sleep med that wasn’t working. She’d been having a terrible time, a vicious spiral of anxiety, insomnia and musculoskeletal pain. Sounded like fibromyalgia. So I suggested we switch to a homeopathic dose of the first antidepressant ever invented, amitriptyline. Presto change-o, anxiety, insomnia AND pain vanished! She pauses and realizes that she had totally forgotten about the pain. Being that she is a Jew and so am I, I could not resist the marvelous Purim lesson at hand. I told her she had proven herself a good Jew by forgetting

As Gujarat CM, Madhavsinh Solanki Was the Precursor to Mandal Politics

He rode to power after uniting Gujarat's marginalised classes, but was unable to politically empower these sections.

Madhavsinh Solanki, who passed away at the ripe old age of 93 on Saturday, will be remembered for being the precursor to what later came to be known as Mandal politics under V.P. Singh’s prime ministership which sought to empower the other backward classes (OBCs). He became Gujarat’s chief minister after leading the Congress to win 142 assembly seats in 1980, followed by 149 seats in 1985. Keen political watchers attribute Solanki’s success to uniting backward castes, Dalits, Adivasis and Muslims.
