LETTERS: Objection to proposed zoning change; a refreshing program

Objection to proposed zoning change
Tuesday, May 25 the City Council will hear an objection to a rezoning application for the 2424 Garden of the Gods Road property. While this should be an easy decision for the council to deny because of safety concerns for the citizens of this area, unfortunately we have witnessed rezoning applications get approved time after time.
What is extremely concerning in this case is the city’s lack of planning for emergency evacuation. This will affect all residents on the west side of town in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), from the Broadmoor area north to Peregrine.

In 2019, Fayette County filmmakers Will & Jim Pattiz decided on the subject of their first feature-length film, former President Jimmy Carter. Two years later, their documentary is headlining the 45th Atlanta Film Festival. In their debut film, CARTERLAND, the Pattiz Brothers examine the tragic, yet inspiring story of America’s most misunderstood president. While leading the nation through a series of unprecedented crises, Jimmy Carter also confronted climate change and championed social justice at home and abroad. The groundbreaking film draws on archival footage, experts, and insiders to reveal how Carter’s selfless leadership and moral integrity ultimately cost him the presidency.

A recent Gardner News story illustrated the latest round of grants provided to applicants from the Gardner Public Schools system through the Williams-Rockwell Educational Gift Fund. It was set up seven years ago by the sale of the Norman Rockwell painting “Willie Gillis in Convoy,” which had been in the possession of the high school since 1951.
It’s interesting to note just how Gardner High School was able to acquire a Rockwell original in the first place. Actually, it came about exactly 70 years ago this week.

The Gardner Scene: How the high school got its hands on a Norman Rockwell original painting

America’s favorite illustrator was a one-time acquaintance of Gardner High School Principal F. Earl Williams during the 1940s. When the two renewed their friendship one day during February vacation week in 1951, Rockwell presented Williams with his original work of art known as “Willie Gillis in Convoy.”

How Trump and Obama’s continued campaigning is changing the post-presidency
After leaving the White House, most recent ex-presidents hang up the stump speech, but Trump and Obama are staying involved

There are few jobs that sound as appealing as former American president. You get to write a book that’s all but assured to be a bestseller, pull in big paychecks from paid speeches, and away from the White House and the day-to-day of partisan politics, people tend to like you a lot more.
“The standard operating procedure when a president leaves office is that they typically disappear from the public domain, at least for a while,” said Russell Riley, a presidential scholar at the University of Virginia Miller Center.
