SBS Language | Surfing is about to make its Olympic debut, but the host city must now watch their homegrown hero on screens

When Tsurigasaki Beach in Ichinomiya, Chiba prefecture was selected as the surfing venue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games, residents of the small town of just over 12,000 people were ecstatic.
Surfing plays a major role in the town's economy, with over 60,000 surfers visiting each year to catch the best waves in Japan. Ichinomiya’s “surfonomics” or surf economy from the Olympics was estimated to be around 10 billion yen or over $124 million (AUD).
But things are looking a lot different now.
The ongoing states of emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic and postponement of the games was already a huge blow, with the town’s hospitality industry relying on crowdfunding last year to keep it afloat.

The Box: WSL Pros (and a Few Locals) Score an Epic Free Surf

The Box: WSL Pros (and a Few Locals) Score an Epic Free Surf

Of all the many waves that litter Western Australia’s coastline, a few really stand out. The Box is one of them.  It stands out because it’s a wave that’ll take your head off just as easily as it will give you a ride you’ll never forget. Italo Ferreira can attest. It was just a few years ago that he managed to snag a wave there that blew everyone’s minds… and he did it without ever having surfed the place before. He’d never surfed there in a contest, in a free surf, not at any time at all. It was his very first wave, and it was insane.

Injury At Pipeline: Mikey "Redd" O'Shaughnessy

Injury At Pipeline: Mikey “Redd” O’Shaughnessy
Former Wave of the Winter winner hits the reef at Backdoor

Sunday morning, Pipeline was all diamonds and rainbows and unicorns. Guys and gals getting the waves of their lives, crazy eight- to 12 foot bright blue tubes across the world’s most famous stretch of reef. A light seabreeze came up around 1pm, ruffling the lineup a bit — but the swell was strong enough to offer some reasonably clean peaks.
Around 1:30pm, a solid set came through. Zeke Lau grabbed the first wave at Backdoor. Mikey “Redd” O’Shaughnessy — 2016 Wave of the Winter winner, who had already snagged a few solid pits over the morning — paddled for the second wave of the set. Dropped in a bit late. The outside edge of his board caught and he ended up falling flat on his back, right at the apex of the reef at Backdoor. Redd went over the falls and hit the reef with his head and was knocked unconscious and held under for at least two waves. (This less than two weeks after getting a five-wave beat-down at Jaws.)

In an age of competitive disappointments, the WOTW is still going full-throttle.

Normally, we do a monthly Top-5 roundup for the O’Neill Wave of the Winter. But December was no normal month on the North Shore of Oahu; in fact, considering the sheer frequency of quality waves gracing the Seven Mile Miracle last month, not even our esteemed WOTW judges could whittle it down, so we just had to showcase more than five rides.
Like 10. Or 11. Hell, we would’ve given you 12, but Flynn Novak’s Pipe whopper wasn’t quite a make.

1. John and Tyler Won Pipe
It was so weird that for so long, the world’s best surfer couldn’t be called a Pipe Master – but that got rectified this week when John John Florence finally won surfing’s most prestigous and most respected event.
And it was so weird that for so long, there had never been Championship Tour points surfed for by women at the Banzai Pipeline – but that too got rectified this week when the Maui Pro had to be moved there and Tyler Wright overcame Carissa Moore in the final.

1. Pipe Masters got the Rona
Was this the most bizarre week in the WSL’s time as an organisation? It has to be a contender, right? To recap: on Sunday, Aus time, the WSL announced that they were halting the Pipe Masters “as a result of positive COVID-19 tests within the WSL staff, including WSL CEO Erik Logan”.
Who could have foreseen that coming? The running of an international sporting event in a public and natural environment, in a country easily hitting over 2000 COVID-related deaths a day? But what came next was even more bizarre. Following the suspension of their competition, the WSL went completely silent. They didn’t post on Instagram or Facebook for a full five days. Not once. To put that in context, they normally hit around eight posts a day on each of those platform – the most of any surf related media or brand – so, yeah, this was odd behaviour. It’s quite hard to imagine any other major sporting body the world over handling an incident like this in a similar way. It led a few of us to start filling the information void ourselves: “Are they in crisis talks right now?” We asked. “Is the WSL going under? Will the ISA and its fantastic and colourful CEO Fernando Aguerre be the new competitive surfing overlords?”
