'It took a long time to get here': behind the National Museum of African American Music

In 1967, Jimi Hendrix accidentally cracked his guitar before a concert. Seeing it was pretty much broken, he decided to destroy it on stage.
When he did, the audience went wild.
Destroying guitars became a regular part of his act. Hendrix destroyed dozens of guitars over his career and one that was salvaged and saved can now be seen in Nashville.

The guitar is on view at the new National Museum of African American Music, which opened on Martin Luther King Jr Day. Tracing over 400 years of black music, from gospel to jazz and R&B, it pays long overdue tributes to musicians like Ma Rainey and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, among others.

When word surfaced more than two decades ago that a National Museum of African American Music was being planned for Nashville, reactions ranged from quizzical to skeptical. The idea was even ridiculed in some sectors of the music journalism and criticism community, as well as among some fans, scholars and lovers of various Black musical idioms. “Nashville, not Memphis?” was one of the recurring comments I heard from colleagues. A second: “That’s not a Black music town.” A third, lesser complaint was that NMAAM wouldn’t get the publicity and recognition it deserves in a city best known as a recording and publishing hotbed of country music.

After touring the National Museum of African American Music during a pre-opening press day, I stopped Henry Beecher Hicks III, the museum’s president and CEO, on my way out the door. I smiled and told him that I loved it — that the museum exceeded every one of my expectations.
As someone who fashions words into sentences and paragraphs for a living, I winced at my pitiful use of language, though it was the best I could offer at the time. When I ran into Hicks, my heart was still so full, my breath caught in my chest like a mother hearing her child say “I love you” for the very first time. I was speechless at the care taken to present this all-important history so thoroughly; my heartbeat quickened at the potential for a more equitable music industry.

The National Museum of African American Music in Nashville opened to the public over the weekend, giving visitors a look into the history of Black artists from musical genres ranging from blues and jazz to hip hop and rock 'n' roll.
The museum, which debuted on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 18, officially opened its doors on Saturday with a mission of “preserving and celebrating the many music genres created, influenced, and inspired by African Americans,” according to the museum’s website.
“We’re not focusing on one genre of music or one type of artist, we’re really taking a look at what was the impact on African Americans once they entered the country, and how did that birth what we know now as Black music,” museum spokeswoman Tuwisha Rogers-Simpson told NBC News.

National Museum of African American Music in Nashville: What's inside

(CNN) — As more people are starting to learn about the history of African Americans, there is one component that's particularly integral to understanding the national culture: music.
African American artists created and influenced genres from the blues, jazz and hip-hop to rock and roll. Bluesmen Muddy Waters and B.B. King electrified that genre and galvanized rock guitarists, and trumpeter and composer Louis Armstrong changed the jazz landscape — all building on traditions brought to American soil by enslaved people.
Educating the world on the central role African Americans have played in "creating the American soundtrack" and preserving that legacy are the missions of the National Museum of African American Music, which debuted in Nashville on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 18. The museum opens to the public on Saturday.
