his wife ann gave a very interesting interview. he may be looking at females out there for his running mate. which really would reshape the race in an interesting way. and hope they don't make the same mistakes as mccain four years ago with that pick. we will see. >> we'll see. also coming up, "seventeen" magazine gets the message from a 14-year-old girl. why a demand for realistic photos got action. i like that story. you have all this air brushing and holding these young girls to these impossible standards. standards that are just fake. let's face it. so hopefully we'll see some movement. >> keep it real. they say, they say. time will tell. also, rihanna tells her former money man "see you in court." the superstar is suing the accountants who handled her millions. that's coming up next in "the skinny." but first, that sunken yacht will be pulled from the water later this morning as investigators try to figure out what caused the tragic sinking off long island. >> really is a horrible story. police say criminal charges have not been ruled out as they look into whether the boat was dangerously overcrowded. abc's john schifrin is there. >> reporter: this is moments after that 34-foot yacht capsized throwing most passengers overboard. you can see the boat still above water and people sitting on its side. 24 people were rescued. three children, ages 8, 11, and 12, were found dead inside the cabin. the boat's operator told news 12, long island, the yacht was hit by a rogue wave. >> we were coming home. and a wave caught us and it turned the boat around. and everybody was in the water. chaos. >> we've got too many on the race boat! >> the boat could have sunk for many reasons. it could be overcrowding. could be a mechanical malfunction. >> reporter: 27 people on a 34-foot boat what does that say to you? >> that's overpopulated. >> reporter: richard balisante spent more than 40 years on the water here near oyster bay said large wakes can be formed when boats leave at the same time. >> it's hard to maneuver your boat if you are not prepared. >> reporter: what's not clear if the children who died were wearing life vests. kids 12 and under must wear life jackets on deck but not inside the cabin. boat safety experts say it's safer never to take them off. >> when there are young children on the boat, in my opinion, if a child needs to wear the life jacket, they wear it all the time. >> reporter: right now the boat is three miles offshore, deep below the water. investigators say if all goes according to plan they will pull it out of the water. at that point they will have a better understanding of what really happened. john schifrin, abc news, new york. >> the kids were trapped in the cabin when it went down. >> horrible. >> horrible way to go, too. the skipper says the rogue wave came along. could happen. a lot of boats in the water all leave at the same time. the show is over. that creates this incredible wake. but that many, as you heard. >> there were a lot of people on that boat. >> lot of people on the boat. on the wrong side. the way the body weight goes, the ship, you can see it tipped over. they're going to investigate it. criminal charges may be coming depending on what investigators find. an avoidable tragedy. >> avoidable. well, a new report finds mechanical problems and human error led to the deadly air france crash. all 228 passengers were on board were killed when the plane plunged into the atlantic ocean. the picture of utter chaos in the cockpit as two co-pilots struggled to fly through a thunderstorm. the results could force a change in how pilots are trained. >> we have to go back to basics. they had the instruments in front of them. could have told them what to do. they didn't know how to look all -- look at it, and that's unacceptable. >> the report could mean some serious legal consequences for plane's maker, airbus, and also for air france, as well. just as nuclear power returns to japan, there is finger pointing over a scathing report that found last year's fukushima meltdown was a manmade disaster. investigators say the power company knew the potential risk of a quake and tsunami but did not make the plant safer. and the company deliberately misled the public about the seriousness of the crisis. the report comes as a reactor in western japan is back online despite safety concerns. to politics -- mitt romney and the republican national committee raised $100 million in campaign cash just last month. in fact, the second straight month romney has outpaced the president's fund-raising. >> president obama is focusing on the economy on a campaign bus tour. abc's brandi hitt is following the campaign. good morning, brandi. >> good morning. you can tell the election is four months away. mitt romney calling on republican pig shots for help while president obama hits the road. >> reporter: president obama launched his first campaign bus tour of 2012 in ohio, one of the key battleground states. the two-day tour which takes him to pennsylvania will focus on the economy. >> our mission right now isn't just to recover from this economic crisis, although that is job one. our mission is to give back to america, americans all across the country, what's been lost -- that sense of security. that sense of security. >> reporter: his campaign co-chair even went on the attack questioning where mitt romney has invested his money. >> he invested in the cayman islands and he has a corporation in bermuda. >> governors jindal and pawlenty are shadowing president obama to push romney's message. >> and barack obama's basic slogan for this campaign is, hey, it could be worse. mitt romney's slogan is it will be better. >> ann romney hinted to cbs news her husband was considering a woman as a potential running mate. >> he's been looking at that, and i would love that option, as well. heating up, many still believe the economy will decide this election. weekly jobless claims dropped to 374,000 last week, the lowest level since mid may. many on the campaign front are now waiting for the june jobs report. rob, sunny? [ beeping ] >> there is a warning. the aircraft is now in my control. >> reporter: now the plane is in the hands of the least experienced pilot on board. he mistakenly thinks the plane is nose down. so he pulls it up. precisely the wrong thing to do. the plane starts stalling. essentially stopping in midair. warnings go off. the two co-pilots call for the captain, six times. it takes him more than a minute to return to the cockpit. he finds utter confusion. eninsks? i don't know what's happening. the key pilot answers. the plane is plummeting at 120 miles an hour. but falling like a leaf, nose up, the 216 passengers may not have noticed what was happening because of the way the plane was descending. >> now we are going down, right. [ beeping ] >> stall, stall. >> reporter: in the cockpit, the co-pilots are trying to fly the plane in opposite directions. >> three seconds before impact, we hear the pilot saying, oh, my god, we're going to crash. i can't believe it. >> not really contemplating the idea this could end badly. >> david muir, abc news, new york. >> that is terrifying. >> i'm a nervous flyer anyway. >> me, too. >> to see that sort of re-enactment. >> where was the captain for six minutes, could have come in and saved the day. another interesting report, when they make airbuses versus the way they make boeings. if the pilots are working against each other in the airbus, the one guy can move forward, the other guy pull back. in the other setup on the boeing, if i, the pilot, i pull back. your control goes back, as well. you are aware of what i am doing. it is a different kind of build-up in the airbus. that's why now, there could be some investiga >> you kidding me, brutal al s this morning, police in london are insisting a series of terror related arrests in the city have no link to the oly whiin i six terror suspects, five men and a woman, were rounded up in raids that included a home a mile from olympic park. detectives say they had been tracking the suspects but uncovered no imminent exclusive. american troops training afghan soldiers found themselves middle of a taliban ambush. abc's mohamed lilo was imbedded with the troops as the gunfi >> reporter: we set out at sunrise. the mission -- help the afghan army reclaim the valley from the taliban. >> that flag was the taliban flag in the village. >> reporter: walking through the valley it's clear this is an afghan-led mission. it is their strategy and it is their fight. it didn't take long for the fight to find us. [ gunfire ] >> reporter: we were walking through the valley when we started hearing gunshots and loud explosions. we believe we may have walked into a bit of an ambush, possibly now we are caught in the crossfire. we can hear the gunshots coming from up there on the ridge. what we hear, that's the afghan army. they are leading this fight. and they are the ones returning the fire. [ gunfire ] >> reporter: with mortars and heavy machine gunfire surrounding us, american slrs nvol3 y ght up there. charge of this fight, the afghans are. theia hheyc handle it on their own. >> where art? >> reporter: with casualties mounting, tempers flare. afghans argue and fight among themselves. in the end, the afghans realize they still need american help. they demand american fighter jets bail them out. the american air strike worked. but the reality is the victory is only temporary. american air support won't always be here to save the day. mohamed lilo, abc news, afghanistan. >> that is such a microcosm for the central problem in afghanistan that when we leave by the end of 2014, the approved plan, are they ready to take care of themselves? you look at the report and go, maybe not. but in another year and a half, it's not going to be our problem officially anymore. >> that's right. supposed to be 2014, the pullout. >> end of 2014. they have to be ready to take care of their own country. you look at that and go, how ready are they? lot to do in 18 months. another child has died after a freak accident on july 4th. the 11-year-old, a second, the second boy to die after being shocked while swimming near house boats in tennessee's cherokee lake. police say a faulty electrical cord could be to blame. remember two other children were killed in a similar holiday tragedy at the lake of the ozarks in missouri. investigators suspect improper wiring in that case as well. a surprise verdict in the trial of a man who admitted to assaulting a priest. william lynch was actually found not guilty after he testified about the abuse that he claims to have suffered at the hand of that very same priest. jurors in san jose say no one wanted to convict lynch after hearing his very emotional story. prosecutors tried to prove, though, it was a case of vigilante justice. an update now on the story we first reported yesterday about the south florida lifeguard who helped save a drowning man, but then was fired because he left his own post to do it. thomas lopez has now been offered his job back at that beach. he says, thanks but no thanks. the 21-year-old said he is now looking for other job opportunities. can't blame him. >> good luck to him. we're expecting a key report on the nation's unemployment later this morning. analysts predict the june jobs report will show employers added as many as 95,000 positions. that's only a slight improvement from may. the payroll company, adp, yesterday said private employers added 176,000 jobs last month. but that report does not show how many government jobs were cut last month. from lackluster unemployment to disappointment at the gas pump. aaa reports gas price s inched up for the past three days in a row. the average price is now $3.34. the first increase since april. probably due to an increase in crude prices cheaper that in was a week ago. >> nowhere near the $5 gallon doomsday we were talking about a few weeks ago. silver lining is there, folks. well, it's now almost a week since the destructive storm hit the states in the mid-atlantic. thousands, believe it or not, still do not have their lights back on. many in maryland and west virginia. utility companies are now promising that almost everybody should have power by the end of today. but the heat is making everything, of course, much more difficult. three utility workers have been treated for heat exhaustion in just the state of ohio. and nearly half the country will suffer with more extreme heat today. 24 states are now under some kind of heat advisory, and relief is still a few days away. abc meteorologist ginger zee explains why. >> reporter: one of the reasons we have seen the persistent drought stick around is a ridge of high pressure the last couple of weeks. we know it has been record-breaking heat, but it also brought the developing drought. now 56% of the lower 48 is in some level of drought conditions. and this high is partly to blame. so what's going to happen the next eight to 14 days? new information from climate prediction center -- i am showing you the graphic now -- below average precipitation in the area you are seeing. in the great lakes, in the nation's heartland, the places that need it most for the corn and soy beans. then down to the southeast they will have above average. remember the area that might not need it after tropical storm debbie brought some 30 inches to parts of north florida. finally, the big question -- everybody wants to know -- what day am i going to finely feel relief? >> reporter: prosecutors say the latest case is very different. first the cell phone camera didn't capture anything inappropriate. second, it didn't happen in a classroom, but in a locker room. >> i think the critical point to remember just because it feels right doesn't mean it is legal. >> reporter: the grand jury did not indict long's daughter for allegedly planting the camera but came down hard on mom. if convicted, she faces up to a $25,000 fine, or 20 years in prison. her attorney tells abc news she is surprised and disappointed by the charges, and maintains no laws were broken. ryan owens, abc news, dallas. >> that seems like a very stiff penalty there, all that money and years and years behind bars. i don't -- i mean? abc's alex perez shows us why. >> reporter: the blistering heat, buckling the pavement, causing the earth to crumble on the roadways and on the farm where bone-dry soil is creating major problem for farmers across the corn belt states. >> we are at such a critical point in this corn plant's life now, it could be the beginning of the end. >> reporter: in manhattan, illinois, where this farmer is a fourth generation farmer they're praying for rain. some plants are almost two feet shorter than they should be at this point in the season and the next two weeks are critical. corn plants begin the pollination period. without the right amount of moisture his corn crop could be lost. >> if the heat and dry weather continue and can't pull enough moisture out of the ground and all the kernels will just die. >> reporter: it was supposed to be the best corn harvest in decades. but now farmers are fearing a repeat of the 1988 drought which wiped out millions of acres of corn and billions in crop damage. one of the worst in recent memories since the dust bowl of the 1930s. experts say consumers could end up feeling the pinch in their pocketbook. as much as 75% of the products in your grocery store use corn as a key ingredient. things like peanut butter, soda could go up 4%. and beef prices could surge as much as 10%. >> this drought, which is going to reduce the amount of corn that we get, that is going to translate into an increase in the price of retail. >> reporter: unless we get some water soon, what will happen? >> well we could lose, easily, 40%. easily. >> reporter: you lose 40% what does that mean to you as a farmer? >> maybe not making ends meet. >> reporter: for now a big game of wait and see for farmers. if they don't get some kind of rain in the next couple weeks, the results could be catastrophic. alex perez, abc news, manhattan, illinois. >> i don't think anyone thought that that would be sort of a byproduct of the heat wave. >> people don't realize how -- integral role corn plays in our, economy there too. the farmer has got to be a tough life, to go through the severe weather patches here. so, so many thoughts and prayers with the farmers here. like you said, as the piece pointed out the ripple effects could be all over the supermarket in a few weeks. >> hitting us. >> exactly. at a time when no one can afford all that extra stuff. well, survivors are describing chaos on board a crowded yacht that capsized off long island, new york, killing three children. 27 people packed on the boat to watch fireworks wednesday night. the man piloting the 34-foot boat says lightning cracked and then the boat was slammed by a wave. the three children, two of them cousins, were trapped in the cabin as the yacht sank. fire has hit the historic hershey park arena on the grounds of the theme park. the workers were putting a roof on the arena when the five-alarm fire broke out. the building where wilt chamberlain set an nba record scoring 100 points for the philadelphia warriors in a game against the new york knicks 50 years ago. hard to believe that record still stands to wilt. that man broke all kinds of records. >> yes, he did. >> yes, he did. the man accused of killing trayvon martin has yet another chance to leave jail now that a bond has been set. >> this time the bail was a lot higher. the judge was not too pleased with zimmerman's misstatements about how much money he actually had. abc is following the case and has the latest. good morning to you, mark. >> reporter: mark, sunny, good morning. if george zimmerman wants to get out of jail any time soon, it's going to cost him a lot. florida judge kenneth lester set bail wednesday at $1 million, that for the man accused of killing trayvon martin. a blow for the defendant who hoped to gain credibility back with video likes this, shot one day after martin's death. that's zimmerman claiming to police martin played the aggressor. >> he is like, "you got a problem now." then he was here. he punched me in the face. i stumbled. and i -- i fell down. he pushed me down. somehow he got on top of me. >> reporter: now that million dollar bail comes after the judge sided with prosecutors. they portrayed zimmerman as a liar who misled the court and may have even been planning to flee the country, saying he and his wife shelly failed to disclose $150,000 in donations they received from the public. >> it was a conspiracy. everybody was involved with it. and there is no doubt about it. his wife got on the stand and lied. that's why she was charged. >> reporter: the judge wrote in his order, "under any definition, zimmerman has flaunted the system." saying the high bail was intended to stop the defendant from fleeing and ordering he must submit to electronic monitoring and obey a curfew from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. >> you don't want to -- especially this judge. >> reporter: it means less freedom and new restrictions for zimmerman. but zimmerman won't have to pay the full million in order to get out of jail. in florida, the standard is to pay 10%, meaning he will need $100,000. still no small amount. rob, sunny? >> that's true. he will need the 10%. but he also needs the collateral up to $1 million. not that easy to fashion a $1 million bond. you know what i thought was fascinating -- his attorney has like i guess many people involved in this case has been involved in social media. they have this twitter account, and website, gz legal defense fund. he sends ape message the defense team. for those who have given in the past, for those who feel they would do the same, as if, as he did, if they were in mr. zimmerman's shoes, shoes, rather, now is the time to show your support. i have never seen anything like that. it was sort of a -- an appeal to those who had supported him in the past to now donate more money to the fund. >> is that essentially what it is? trying to stir up the public, courof public opinion, or is it about getting enough money? >> seemed to really be about getting more donations. at the end of the statement, they describe how you can do that. >> donate. and he raised $200,000. $1,000 a day at the height. >> initially. i have never seen anything like that. actually that appeal -- to the public, not only for money, but sort of appealing to those that support his version of events. it just, it seemed very awkward. >> interesting tactic. should mention too, trayvon martin's family will be in new orleans, holding a press conference with reverend al sharpton to get the reaction to latest developments. we'll have an eye on that as well. shifting gears now, a florida man says he is lucky to be alive this morning. that's because a medallion on a necklace that he was wearing kept a bullet from hitting his chest. 74-year-old richard smaldo was watching fireworks on the 4th in a town ironically called safety harbor when the bullet from somewhere in the crowd slammed into his face. >> it was like a rock, a boulder, smacked me in the nose really with a lot of force. hits my nose, comes off the side, goes flew my nostril. >> the bullet traveled towards his chest, but was stopped by the medallion which he recently had engraved with a bible verse that his mother loved. >> how about that. >> lucky, lucky man. in san diego, frustrated people who waited for hours are still talking about the fourth of july fireworks show that wasn't. it now looks like a computer glitch turned the big, bang, boom display into a big bust. what was supposed to be an 18 minute show, five barges worth blew up at the same time. >> realistically speaking, it's just something that obviously was beyond our control. anyone who has ever had any kind of computer situations or otherwise, it's not perfect. so we have never had this situation before. and god willing will never have anything like this again. >> the fireworks were supposed to last 18 minutes, due to the mistake it was more like 18 seconds. the fireworks company will do next year's show for free. city has apologized for the show which cost $400,000. >> i had no idea the shows were that expensive. $400,000. all you got was 18 seconds worth? >> that's overpopulated. >> reporter: richard balisante spent more than 40 years on the water here near oyster bay said large wakes can be formed when boats leave at the same time. >> it's hard to maneuver your boat if you are not prepared. >> reporter: what's not clear if the children who died were wearing life vests. kids 12 and under must wear life jackets on deck but not inside the cabin. boat safety experts say it's safer never to take them off. >> when there are young children on the boat, in my opinion, if a child needs to wear the life jacket, they wear it all the time. >> reporter: right now the boat is three miles offshore, deep below the water. investigators say if all goes according to plan they will pull it out of the water. at that point they will have a better understanding of what really happened. john schifrin, abc news, new york. >> the kids were trapped in the cabin when it went down. >> horrible. >> horrible way to go, too. the skipper says the rogue wave came along. could happen. a lot of boats in the water all leave at the same time. the show is over. that creates this incredible wake. but that many, as you heard. >> there were a lot of people on that boat. >> lot of people on the boat. on the wrong side. the way the body weight goes, the ship, you can see it tipped over. they're going to investigate it. criminal charges may be coming depending on what investigators find. an avoidable tragedy. >> avoidable. well, a new report finds mechanical problems and human error led to the deadly air france crash. all 228 passengers were on board were killed when the plane plunged into the atlantic ocean. the picture of utter chaos in the cockpit as two co-pilots struggled to fly through a thunderstorm. the results could force a change in how pilots are trained. >> we have to go back to basics. they had the instruments in front of them. could have told them what to do. they didn't know how to look all -- look at it, and that's unacceptable. >> the report could mean some serious legal consequences for plane's maker, airbus, and also for air france, as well. just as nuclear power returns to japan, there is finger pointing over a scathing report that found last year's fukushima meltdown was a manmade disaster. investigators say the power company knew the potential risk of a quake and tsunami but did not make the plant safer. and the company deliberately misled the public about the seriousness of the crisis. the report comes as a reactor in western japan is back online despite safety concerns. to politics -- mitt romney and the republican national committee raised $100 million in campaign cash just last month. in fact, the second straight month romney has outpaced the president's fund-raising. >> president obama is focusing on the economy on a campaign bus tour. abc's brandi hitt is following the campaign. good morning, brandi. >> good morning. you can tell the election is four months away. mitt romney calling on republican pig shots for help while president obama hits the road. >> reporter: president obama launched his first campaign bus tour of 2012 in ohio, one of the key battleground states. the two-day tour which takes him to pennsylvania will focus on the economy. >> our mission right now isn't just to recover from this economic crisis, although that is job one. our mission is to give back to america, americans all across the country, what's been lost -- that sense of security. that sense of security. >> reporter: his campaign co-chair even went on the attack questioning where mitt romney has invested his money. >> he invested in the cayman islands and he has a corporation in bermuda. >> governors jindal and pawlenty are shadowing president obama to push romney's message. >> and barack obama's basic slogan for this campaign is, hey, it could be worse. mitt romney's slogan is it will be better. >> ann romney hinted to cbs news her husband was considering a woman as a potential running mate. >> he's been looking at that, and i would love that option, as well. heating up, many still believe the economy will decide this election. weekly jobless claims dropped to 374,000 last week, the lowest level since mid may. many on the campaign front are now waiting for the june jobs report. rob, sunny?
