when he spoke at arlington national cemetery at the tomb of the unknown soldier. >> we must remember only 1%, 1% of our society today protects 99% of us. oh 1%. we owe them, we owe you. arthel the pentagon says that nearly 60 troops hurt and those recent attacks have returned to duty. as you have mentioned 48 attacks on u.s. forces in the middle east since october 17. six of those attacks have facilities white house insists the strikes are working to deter a wider conflict in the middle east. the latest round attacks even this morning seem to show the u.s. response so far has not completely deterred to run. let's bring in former commanding officer of the uss cole you know the ship was attacked by al qaeda in 2000 and 2000 killingr sailors. retired commander joins us now. good to see you and thank you on this veterans day for your service. >> thank you eric very much appreciated progress of course. what you make of these attacks the administration response? is it enough it seems like iran is not getting the message question at. questioner. >> they're not getting the message when you look at it iran a skilled thousands of americans of the last 40 years. these attacks occurring today clearly indicate iran is not been deterred they are not taking any actions to stop the attacks they are continuing to target through their proxy forces in iraq, and syria and in the region u.s. forces. it's only a time before someone probably gets killed and at the end of the day there needs to be no white space. no difference between a proxy forced from iran and iran itself. we need to start holding that country accountable in a manner that deters them, not just with proportional responses. eric: what type of action that is not proportional not the so-called pin prick response? >> i think we've got the intelligence to know where the proxy groups are hiding, the vast majority of the command-and-control per their weapons depots and others. what we need to distract them hard enough it literally takes a breath away. we need to make sure they pay a price that is so high proportional does not work. what needs to work as a factor when they get hit they shoot wanted us we will do five at them. we want to make sure they begin to be deterred per the only thing iran understands is power. it's an unfortunate reality in the region. steve argument is lucky and fortune our forces have not been killed so far but they have been injured. these are traumatic brain injuries that is very serious, do you think that's not being taken seriously enough? >> ever since the attack on my ship i have maintained a policy as i think most americans have if you harm in american or you kill an american we need to go to the source who didn't hold did it holdthem accountable thon and women who are suffering from these traumatic brain injuries all our veterans they are eventually going to come home. they do it they will need our help as americans not only from active duty military medical hospitals but the va as well. then you're also going to other groups throughout the united states as americans want to reach out make sure these young men and women get the services they need to be able to heal and contribute back to our society. eric: we thank them, we honor them they are in our thoughts as they are in harms way us in the mantelpiece behind to your book front burner which is al qaeda's attack on the uss cole what lessons are in that book that we could apply today in terms of dealing with it retaliating against the radical islamic terrterrorists like those who attached your ship on those motivating him off now? >> when you look at it one of the biggest factors is there was no response of the attack on my ship and 17 sailors were killed and 37 were injured. that was true for two administrations a cl the clintod bush administrations. two different parties clearly no party can claim they own a national security it is an american issue and as i said before if you harm or you kill an american we are going to hold you accountable. >> ois the strongest way -- message we can ever get across and finally on this veterans day people wonder how can they help? there's an organization charities for vets.org for example that tells you where you can go to donate, to help out. tell us the importance of that pen where you can give and how we can help for those watching at home. >> thank you eric i very much appreciate that on the board of advisors for charities for vets.org but it really serves as is like a clearinghouse it is the consumer reports appeared we do not directly offer things but what we do is if you go on there we have three categories highly recommended, recommended and not recommended. there are billions of dollars been donated to veterans throughout our country every year but how effective are those organizations? we draw out for benchmarks that we use the most important criteria is a 75% that donation goes towards a veteran or their programs think it's recommended if 85% or more go to it it's highly recommended and you would be surprised there are some major big name veterans organizations get a not recommended because they have close to 30% that is spent on overhead, salaries, conferences, events and golf outings instead of actually helping those veterans that truly deserve that helping hand. eric: there it is on the screen charities for vets.org we want to help we think of our veterans not just today without the whole year what they have gone through with the men and women of your ship retired commander thank you for joining us today pick. >> thank you for your service. this veterans day fox corporate is parting for the recommended charity's u.s. vets to make camo. their mission is to get homeless veterans off the
