at travis. lawrence livermore lab is joining teams around the world in trying to figure out what makes the coronavirus tick. they're using one of the world's most powerful super computers to figure out the proteins that make up this virus and they they can be attacked and neutralized. >> the virus is not very well understood yet. >> it's what you can't see that can hurt you. that's why scientists have put long hours into creating this 3d image of the proteins at the core of the coronavirus. >> the structure of the key protein that we want to target is not known. >> reporter: scientists are taking their best guess using the dna makeup of a close cousin of the coronavirus, the sars virus that killed nearly 800 people in the early 2000s. >> from that structure we can begin to design a therapeutic anti-body. >> reporter: since the two viruses are not identical, the lab's own super computer sierra, rated as the second most lawrence livermore d. scientists used to come up with their model does more calculations in one second than you could do in 31 billion years. and it's still not powerful enough to predict how the virus could change over time and it will. >> even with the biggest super computers in the world, we can't evaluate all possible designs. >> the question is what do you want to look at, what are the possibilities. >> reporter: the model is not detailed enough to answer those questions yet, but it is to start. nurses in a south bay school district are working with parents to monitor students. >> reporter: when students across san jose go to see the nurse, they're being monitored closely to be sure it's not just seasonal flu or a cold. cole's temperature is normal but the nurse follows up. >> have you had any vomiting? >> no. >> how about some diarrhea? >> reporter: health offenses are fully equipped to monitor 30,000 students. south bay colleges and schools have been sendi ing out alerts since the first case was announced last friday. one of the most important steps the school district is taking is asking parents to provide feedback about their children's symptoms. >> we want to know are we seeing an unusual number of kids with fever, an unusual number of kids with respiratory. that really helps us track this and respond. >> reporter: individuvigilance lesson learned since swine flu swept in 2009 and 2010 killing more than 12,000. fear and suspicion of others can surface on crowded campuses. people need to be aware of irrational behavior. >> so people can be afraid maybe that any person coughing or sneezing could be student from stockton who vanished while attending cal poly. >> reporter: a murder investigation case that began over 23 years ago in obispo county. the victim, college student kristin smart. the person of interest, paul flores who moved to san pedro six years ago according to neighbors. this is one of four locations searched today by deputies and fbi agents. kristin smart's disappearance has been a mystery since 1996. flores was the last person seen with smart as they left a party on the cal poly campus. today a neighbor says she saw flores briefly detained by investigators. >> i seen him when he got in the car, when they handcuffed him and took him. >> reporter: flores was released hours later and went back inside his house. it was four years ago investigatored ca es called in
