bay. there's new issue. this is in the gilroy holster area. this is southbound 101 just south of monterey road. there's a crash involving an overturned vehicle. some lanes were blocked but they've now just re-opened. still pretty heavy traffic in that northbound direction as you approach monterey road in gilroy. also north of there on 101, southbound 101 north of oakland road in san jose, a crash still here. some of the middle lanes and the back up is building behind it. that is your main trouble spot in silicon valley. here is a live look at highway 24 lafayette all the way to the caldicot tunnel . no major problems or issues to tell you about here. i went back to this south bay commute. but coming up in about 5 to 10 minutes we'll have more information on the east bay commute. we'll circle back and tell you about some of the issues there. overall things look good. 6:02. let's go back to the deing. new this morning hundreds of new cases of the corona virus have now been confirmed in china and other locations. the number of confirmed cases rose to 830 and at least 26 people have died. in the city of woohan china and 12 other cities with a combined population of 36 million people are under lockdown right now. woohan is building a 1000 bed hospital just for people infected by the disease. it's expected to open a week from sunday. top government doctors will go before the senate health and foreign relations committees today talking about the possible impact of the corona virus here in the u.s. now here in the bay area, alameda county is testing about 10 people who may have been exposed to the corona virus. ktvu's alyssa harrington is at u.c. berkley now with more on the possible danger here in the bay area. good morning, alyssa. >> good morning. yeah, that's right and alameda county health officials say there are no confirmed cases here at this point. but they did send those samples off to the cdc for testing. those people showed symptoms including a sore throat, cough and fever and they had also either just been to woohan or interacted with people who had recently been there. that's why they're not taking any chances. ose samples to co but the cdc has already cleared several of them. anyone who has travelled and are experiencing respiratory symptoms should come in and get a health screening if you're a u.c. berkley student. they say that doctors are also checking whether a student at texas anm may have been infected. that student returned from china and was showing symptoms of a respiratory illness. doctors are monitoring 43 people who came in close contact with a seattle area man diagnosed with the virus. >> he appears to be doing well and we hope that he will continue on his excellent clinical course and hope flooel will be able to return home in the near future. >> we know that there is human to human transmission in china. but for now, it appears limited to family groups and health workers caring en. at this time, there is no evidence of human to human transmission outside china. . >> health officials believe the virus originated at a seafood market in central china. people could have eaten infected meat, fish, or wild animal. people who flew in from china are getting health screenings. many people have been seen at the airport wearing masks. in woohan masks are selling out, the streets are empty and hospitals are overwhelmed. lunar new year events in china have also been cancelled. symptoms are similar to the flu. feer, coughing and there are also more respiratory problems like trouble breathing. if you have traveled within the past two weeks health officials certainly want to see you. the cdc says that you shfor at seconds or use a hand sanitizer to prevent the spreading of any sort of illness and also 6:07. new this morning authorities in alameda county are searching for two people now. it started at 3:30 this morning on interstate 880. the driver of a truck got off the freeway near the coliseum in oakland and led sheriff's deputies through several neighborhoods. then thethe truck near meras captured video of the suspectsi they eventually got away. at this point we don't know why the authorities were trying to arrest them in the beginning. we'll keep an eye on this and bring you updates as soon as they're available. a man suspected of attacking drivers is in jail this morning accused of firing marbles at cars in the bruindale area. a task force was set up to investigate the attacks on highways 101 and 156. charles kenneth laugherty was arrested. investigators say he used a slingshot while driving to fire glass marbles at on coming traffic. investigators tracked him down by identifying his truck. we felt there's only a matter of time before someone seriously got hurt for it. so it was great news. there were at least 69 attacks including a school bus and five people were hurt. our time now 6:08. the california horse racing board now considering major changes in an effort to make horse racing safer. this comes after three race horses died at santa an eeumdta racetrack this past weekend. now the number of deaths of race horses, 5 horses so far this month. last year at least 36 horses died at race horse tracks. the horse racing board met on wednesday in sacramento. some of the proposed changes include reducing or eliminating the types of drugs given to race horses. also making veterinarian records transparent. and changing the riding crops that jockeys use. >> the goal is to eliminate all fatalities, that's never going to happen. racing is dangerous. it's a very high kinetic sport just like we're not going to eliminate airplane crashes or car crashes but that's got to be our goal and that's what we have to work towards. >> the horse racing board will release a report next friday at the santa anita racetrack. it is 6:09. we want to check in with allie rasmus who's in for sal for a look at the commute this friday morning. >> i would say it's friday morning light. there are some issues including up in the napa area which is where we're going to start in the north bay. westbound highway 12 still have that problem just east of red top road and you can see a back up behind it. also in the westbound direction of highway 37 some slowing as well. from there we'll check the commute on highway 4, this is usually a busy corridor and unfortunately this morning is no sxepgs. exception. you see a lot of traffic building in that westbound direction of highway 4 through bay point and pittsburgh. earlier crash is in the eastbound direction at summersvillement that is still in the clearing stages. let's check the commute coming in from tracy. a lot of heavy traffic on westbound 205 towards the altamonte pass. it does clear up once you get to that point. be aware of a stalled vehicle eastbound 580 once you get to that 580, 680 interchange. if your destination is the bay bridge toll plaza you will have a pleasant friday morning surprise and the metering lights haven't even turned on. 6:10. i do see some fog in these pictures. we haven't been able to show the south bay clas. >> that fog is a little unusual. there's a little bit more fog out there even in towards san jose out to the east as well. sometimes that fog can be tough to budge. forecasts sometimes can be a little too high for parts of brent wood, antioch, oakley out that way. patchy fog 40 to 50. 54 to 64 and mostly cloudy by later this afternoon. it will be pretty mild to the south. gilroy and santa cruz going 67 there. saturday we'll cloud it up. and eventually late saturday into sunday morning. giving rain it will fall apart by the time it gets down towards san jose. yesterday was all east northeast. today it's more northwest or west right above the caldicot. the middle peak and marin county northwest at 19 miles an hour. northwest at 23. that's the system yesterday that gave us a lot of cloud cover. it was a cloudy gray day. we'll get some clouds in the morning. a little rain to the north. show you that in a second. 40s, 50s on the temps here and some of that fog also showing up. but on the peninsula it's 40s and 50s. palo alto, loss altos. hillsboro 46 and san carlos at 48 degrees. and also sacramento one better for monterey at 49. that's the rain. ukiah clear lake north. lake county and that will probably be the situation for tomorrow as well as that system continues to cloud up there will be some rain to the north. it may take awhile to get down to the bay area and that's probably where the heaviest rain will be. so when something we've seen a lot of from these systems this month. upper 50s, low 60s to the north . mid 60s to the south. santa cruz gilroy 67. that will start to work its way late saturday into sunday for morning rain and then we get update from houston, texas about that big explosion and fire early today in northwestern houston. look at your screen. at least one worker is still unaccounted for at an industrial site after that big explosion and fire and nearby homes and businesses as you can see were badly damaged. right now the crews out there can't focus on searching for that person unaccounted for until the area is stabilize. they're trying to stop chemicals from coming out of the damaged industrial building. we'll keep watching northwestern houston, texas and bring you the latest on that fire and explosion. in it because of it. here's the case in 80. along most of the 880 corridor in the east bay from oakland down to union city fremont we don't have any major issues to tell you about there. here's the golden traffic moving smoothly heading into the city and early this morning we saw one of the right- hand lanes in the northbound direction closed off with the cones but it looks like that has now capitola is already a mild 49. so is monterey. 38 in lake tahoe and speaking of there was a little rain up there. high elevation snow in the last six hours . these are mild systems they're not cold systems so snow will be very high from the system coming in on the weekend. same up in mendocino county. and that's going to be the theme on saturday. that system right there works its way towards us. we'll then cloud it up and get some rain and that system looks like it's going to do what many have already done. give some pretty good rain. again, up to the russian river. south of that. i just don't think it will be too much of hlt upper 50s, 60s if that fog is firmly implanted over your castle it might be tough to budge to get up over the 50s that will be some mild conditions. again, i bridge toll plaza and that east shore freeway. overall things in that section of the commute look good. 6:32. let's go back to the desk. today in san francisco democratic presidential candidate tom steyer will hold a town hall meeting about immigration and other issues. yesterday, in the city of richmond steyer held a round table talk. he was joined by former inmates. they talked about how hard it is leaving prison and then trying to reenter the work force. several bay area members of congress have been holding town hall meetings this week to their constituents on proceedings. about 250 people turned out last night at dublin high school for a town hall hosted by east bay congressman eric swalwell. he talked to ktvu about his priorities for the new year. . >> housing. reducing congestion and traffic but also holding a reckless president accountable. >> some gun rights activists made an appearance at swalwell's town hall holding banners in the back of the room. swalwell made gun control a central issue of his brief run for president: when the senate trial begins later this morning we will carry it live over on ktvu plus at 10:00 a.m. and updates on ktvu fox 2 news at noon. happening today the trump administration is planning action against california over the state's policy that requires insurance companies to cover abortions. that's according to the wall street journal. the white house is expected to say that that requirement by california discriminates against insurers that don't provide abortion coverage. it's not clear right now what action the trump administrati holding back federal money for health and human services.. well that action comes as president trump will become the first sitting united states president to address the march for life rally today in washington d.c.. thousands of people are expected to be at the annual anti-abortion event. it's held every year around the anniversary of the 1973 supreme court ruling rowe versus wade that legalized abortion. now pro-life advocates are also planning to be on the streets here in the bay area. the walk for life in san francisco begins tomorrow at 12:30 at civic center plaza in san francisco. it is the 16th year of that walk. demonstrators will then march down market street beginning at 1:30 in the afternoon. there's a new state assembly bill under consideration focused on single use wet wipes and the environment. critics say those wipes including the labeled flushable wipes have been linked to massive sewage clogs. it would require more regulation on products that cannot be flushed be clearly labeled as such. also a quick reminder about our california political show, the issue is there is some lively discussions every week about all things political. throughout the state the program airs. 7:00 to 9:30 this sunday on ktvu followed by sports weekend at 9:30. there are a few things to talk about in politics. >> quite a bit. allie has seemed to talk about in our morning commute. >> we're going to start with the bay bridge toll plaza because the metering lights are on. it's about an hour later that they would normally turn on in a busy weekday commute. especially during those car pool lanes. the area where we do have a sig alert to you about we mentioned this crash westbound 80 just east of highway 12. four of the five lanes in that westbound direction are blocked because of a multiple vehicle collision there. we don't know when those lanes will re-open but they are working on getting some tow trucks to the scene there. if you're driving from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze it will take you 22 minutes. it's bumping up the drive time. and the westbound 80 corridor from hercules down to this point, highway 24 in lafayette is and clouds will still be to the north. pretty mild to the south. what's happened is you get the warm overrun. that line of overrunning has been up in mendocino county, that will be the case for today
