PB Malmkrog ★★★★½ What: At the start of the 20th century, a group of well-off Russians gather in a Transylvanian country house to debate some of life’s big questions, with special reference to death, Jesus, and the ethics of violence. Streaming on MUBI. Why watch: The Romanian filmmaker Cristi Puiu ( The Death of Mister Lazarescu) is playing some typically tricky games in this elegantly staged, outwardly faithful adaptation of a 1900 text by Russian philosopher Vladimir Solovyov. The characters rarely stop talking, but it’s up to us to decide how much of the real drama exists between the lines – and how much relevance Solovyov’s ideas retain in the present.
