been unable to do, sell his tax cut framework to democrats. >> in my opinion, this is a good bill. i hope that my fellow democrats will support it. i believe this will be a significant net plus for the country. >> sean: the strangest moment of this rare joint appearance came when president obama interrupted the former president. wait until you see this. >> he can say whatever he wants. >> wait. here's what i'll say, i've been keeping the first lady waiting for about half an hour. so i'm gone that takeoff. >> i don't want to make her mad, please go. >> you are in good hands. gibbs will call last question. >> thank you. get. >> sean: clearly no love lost between those two. in a moment i'll be joined by charles krauthammer. charles a shout off out from clinton at today's impromptu briefing. >> the really interesting thing was is that a lot of the hard-core conservatives think the republicans gave too much. reid, charles krauthammer's column in the post, he's a brilliant man and he pointed out that they got the divisive tax cuts, but most were targeted to middle class working people. >> sean: joining me from washington to president ton's comments is the brilliant man himself charles krauthammer. was he going back to your days in the mondale campaign? >> when you get praise from president clinton and you are from my side of the aisle that means my career is done, i'm toast. maybe npr will take me. they've got a spot where juan williams used to be. otherwise, i'm done. >> sean: i agree. there was a sick side of me that still misses president obama an taking me as he did during the campaign. >> if he would have attacked me that been okay. what clinton is arguing is what i argued in my column. i think republicans have misunderstood the mooning of this and liberal democrats in the house have no idea of their own self-interest. this is something who in a position of strength gave away hundreds of billions in stimulus, stimulus, something they could never have had if obama asked openly for stimulus but he got it by the backdoor. in a position of great weakness. i think this is a triumph for the democrats. clinton is right if liberal democrats would look objectively and not be clouded by their almost religious hatred of anything that could possibly help the upper income folks, theyx@#wwould see their own self-interest. >> sean: there's a lot of interesting as pacifics. it is barack obama now arguing almost what we supply-siders argue that economists are telling him this is going grow the economy and create jobs. he wouldn't have made that argument two years ago. i disagree with your math. i agree with you -- i think the were in a much stronger position than perhaps they knew. they could have held out for a straight up or down vote on the issue of the tax cuts, no? >> that's what i would have done. there's no way the democrats could have allowed the rates to rise for everyone on january 1. and had they don't that and taken the heat for it, republicans would be control of the house, operational control of the senate. over 20 democratic senators up to be reelected in two years. there's a large group of them who will side with republicans on issues like this. they want to be reelected. if you have control of the house. and de facto control of the senate. then in mid january, the republicans could easily have passed an examine . what would the president have done? vetoed it? slaughtly not. i think was unnecessary. >> sean: we have senator jim deminute, mike pence they are proposing that straight up or down vote, would it pass? >> at this -- at this point republicans are so committed i'm not sure they can walk this back. they've got to hope hope that it will be the liberal dems in the house that will sink this as they caved on the public option, liberal dems in the house are going to realize it will be a catastrophic error to vote done this agreement. in the end i think they will vote in favor. i'm not sure the republicans, having made this agreement openly and publicly can walk it back. if i were in the senate, i would oppose it. >> sean: i would argue the democrats are doing that job for them. harry reid in an attempt to buy votes of tom harkin and boxer and other people is changing the deal. nancy pelosi has planned to do the same in the house. aren't they giving them that opening? >> absolutely right. what you could say is look, they have just added into the bill. one example of how appalling this is. they've just added in a one year extension of the ethanol credits. which are a investigation a couple of weeks ago, even al gore conceded that ethanol subsidies are a huge error, fundamentally and economically. there's no one on the planet who will defend it for anything other than a pork subsidy and hand-out of the midwest states that they are going to need in a presidential election. there's no economic or other argument in favor of it. it is now included in a bill a month after the republicans won election, by promising the country to be opposed to the expansion of government and to wasteful spending. it is a total contradict of that promise. and of the new look, second chance, that republicans had said they were now gonna represent. >> sean: yeah. look, let me go to the area of disagreement that i have with you, respectfully, of course. i mean, i thought you made a really interesting case. bill clinton thinks you are brilliant. how could i gotú1ç against bill. but, when you add in the tax cuts, for example, i didn't view this as a tax cut. i view this as a continuation of the current rates. if obama had his way he would be raising taxes, charles. you're adding that money that they had factored in, as adding to the deficit. which raises your figure considerably in terms of the amount of increased spending that is associated with this and you are giving the republicans blame. i look at that as a supply-sider that that helps the economy. >> the point i'm trying to make is, we have just -- this an will increase the debt by about a trillion dollars. there's no arguing it. because the baseline that you have to take is what's called existing law. unexisting law and all the cbo projections in the past, all projections by anyone, under existing law have the higher rates on january 1, and look i'm not extending the cuts. i would have said yes, we'll do it. only a third of a trillion, not a trillion. that's why i oppose it. extending bush tax cuts for a couple of years is not a bad idea and though it does add to our debt because it is different from the baseline. but, i think it would give us the opportunity to stay out of recession again. and to have a real reform of a tax code like the '86 reform which is where you want to go. the debt commission recommended a tax reform that eliminates loopholes and lowers the upper rate to 23%. that's what we ought to be arguing for. not the old argument over the bush tax cuts. >> sean: tax reform, i'm with you. even the president has indicated he might go down that road. do you cut any slack to the inasmuch as it is still nancy pelosi's house. it is still harry reid in the senate. still obama in the white house this is a lame duck session. >> the problem is, when your leadership makes a deal -- you can argue it has been corrupt and amened and thus reneged on. you can argue that. i'm not sure that is an honest argument. when your leadership makes a commitment, you got to be honorable about it and stay with it and though i think it is a mistake. the leadership right now cannot renege. if i were a senator i would oppose it. i'm not sure republicans en masse can walk away from a deal. >> if i were you i would call clinton and say whatever you do, please done praise me again. >> psychiatry awaits me. my career is done. >> sean: kharls krauthammer, thanks. >> pleasure. >> plenty more hannity, straight ahead. -- >> up to congress to pass it. >> democrats ease their pain over the tax cut deal by stuffing the bill with earmarks. these people still do not get it. >> there's a war going on. >> sean: both sides of the aisle are fired up over the tax cut compromise. why no one seems to be happy. frank luntz explains. >> plus, department store santa fired for being, well a bit too jolly. more hannity, straight ahead. to stay fit, you might also want to try lifting one of these. a unique sea salt added to over 40 campbell's condensed soups. helps us reduce sodium, but not flavor. so do a few lifts. campbell's.® it's amazing what soup can do.™ >> sean: just weeks removed from the wikileaks scandal the obama state department embarrassed yet again. india demanding an apology after its ambassador to the u.s. underwent one of those invasive tsa pat-downs. the external affairs minister said this incident is unacceptable to india. let not your heart be troubled. secretary clinton says a review is underway. in the meantime, you and i, we're stuck with the pat-down. straight ahead.
