a woman was crossing at the same time. >> she was in the crosswalk. at this point we believe she was approximately 95% of the way across the street when the bus, left side of the bus, contacted her. >> ryan brody was across the street when the accident occurred. >> we saw a victim being pulled out of the bus and then they were wrapping her. obviously it seemed like she had passed away. >> the woman, believed to be in her late 20s or 30s, died at the scene. investigators sorted through the scene for hours. witnesses say the muni driver was visibly shaken as they saw him exit the bus. police placed him in a patrol car. >> the driver remained on scene. he's cooperating with investigators and as far as policy he will be tested for any signs of impairment. >> police say he didn't immediately exhibit any signs that he was impaired. this is the ninth pedestrian fatality in san francisco so far this year. elizabeth of walk san francisco says that's nine too many. >> every year over 800 people are hit by cars in san francisco. we really need to have safer streets when this many people get hit by cars, that's not okay. >> ironically police say the bus would have not normally been taking this turn on hartford. >> it was taken out of service to supplement the f-line trolleys. they had a higher than usual passenger riding so they took that bus out of service to supplement those lines and the driver was on his way to the bus stop at 17th and castro to begin that route. >> there have been nine pedestrian fatalities so far this year. october of last year there were only six. according to the advocacy group transportation area, san francisco ranks first in pedestrian fatalities in san francisco. abc7 news. >> the head of muni, edward reiskin, released a statement saying we express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the pedestrian killed in the tragic bus accident this afternoon involving a muni puts. the man who hit a santa rosa boy was cite the twice driving without a license days before the accident. police say 22-year-old marcus garcia had a conditional license that expired on july 27th. officers say the victim was in the crosswalk at west 9th street and rockwell place when a car hit him about 6:00 thursday evening. the boy died yesterday morning at children's hospital in oakland. his name has not been released. a person listening to a police scanner heard a description of the car and spotted it not far from the incident. the witness says he also saw the suspect peeling a decal after the car's rear window. garcia is scheduled to appear in court monday. >> a stanford student has disappeared in malaysia after going on tour with the university chamber chorale. the 22-year-old went to japan with the group and when everyone else returned home he went during across asia. he taught english in thailand. he contacted his family daily until several days ago. his parents last heard from him on sunday. his professor said he and had been exchanging e-mails and he hasn't heard from jacob in more than a week. >> for a guy who is very good at returning e-mail and communicating in general, electronically while he's traveling, it is a concern that we haven't heard from him for this long. >> he did not have a specific itinerary, but had been updating a public google map. he holds dual citizenship and was traveling on u.s. and german passports. he was last seen in malaysia. family and friends of a missing hayward nursing student are going to be conducting another search today. it will be the seventh search party looking for michelle li since she was last seen three months ago. she disappeared on may 27th when she left the hospital saying she was going to her car. police found the car and has classified the case as a murder investigation, but her family is not giving up hope. there's a reward for information in that case. technology is making our lives easier in many ways, but it comes with some risk. a discovery that some medical devices could be hacked, and bay area congresswoman is calling for tougher standards or wireless devices. as john alston reports, insulin pumps are getting attention but there are other risk. >> the concern comes from a computer expert who also happens to be a diabetic. at a conference this month he showed how he could remotely reprogram his pump. and hacking has also occurred against pacemakers and defibrillators that use wireless communication. two people who know that well is the san francisco security consultant. don and matt, while they don't deal with the issue of medical devices, they are working to stay one step ahead of hackers. >> a lot of things that are actually improving and making our lives easier, but at the same time with these devices, they have become, you know, the issues of what actually they have control over. >> one device they investigated was the car security system. they recently demonstrated how they could by pass a car alarm with a few key strokes on a laptop and they were able to open the locked door and start the engine. [engine noise] >> anti-theft systems rely on cellular networks which allow one machine to talk to another, often through a text message. >> so anything that uses the system is going to be vulnerable to a range of potential attacks. you will see that in almost every industry today worldwide. >> wireless signals are behind home security systems. atms, power grids and pipelines. the security consultants say that unnamed car alarm company they were able to breach quickly fixed the problem. consumers should ask questions before buying. >> a good sign is, you know, a manufacture publicly stating we have had our security reviewed by third parties. >> everything is connected, you know, with internet, wi-fi, whatever it may be, all these different systems. they are supposed to be secure, but they really aren't. >> with regard to the medical devices, industry officials are downplaying the threat saying that the average person would not be able to figure out a way to hack an insulin pump or pacemaker. still the fcc is being asked to investigate. in the newsroom, john alston, abc7 news. >> coming up next, a woman who lost her home in the san prune no explosion gets a big pay off after help from abc7. also a sea lion is getting medical attention as investigators look for a gunman. [ female announcer ] they've been off limits to dieters since time began. not anymore. ♪ fiber one is bringing brownies back. at 90 calories, the only thing between you and chocolaty brownies ♪ new fiber one 90 calorie brownies. in the granola bar aisle. >> closed captioning brought to you by mancini sleepworld. >> the one-year anniversary of the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion is less than three weeks away. one fire victim waited all this time to hear from pg&e about the money owed her for the damage to her home and the payment happened only abc7 news contacted the utility yesterday. abc7's wayne freedman has the story. >> my blood pressure is up, i've been on meds, i go to counseling twice a week. i don't sleep. >> such as the stress with dealing with pg&e after surviving the san bruno explosion. >> i am lucky to be alive, but once you get over that and you thank god, you know that your life is not what it should be, especially at my age. >> this is what remains of the house she used to live in on claremont drive. gilda and her boyfriend, tim, have no desire to rebuild or to return, but they have not been able to buy a new home in the area because while insurance covered $700,000. pg&e has paid nothing, including money that should have gone to the cost of the lot in san bruno, plus more for the home's destroyed contents. >> it's like trying to deal with a david, trying to deal with a goliath. >> they owe me over $400,000 that they have committed to in their purchase program. >> they do not want to talk to our lawyers. they want to delay things. they don't want to pay moneys that more or less we had signed up for. >> the level of frustration by some san bruno residents is so high that 50 of them have filed a class action suit against pg&e. neither pg&e, nor their lawyers, would comment on the status of that case, but when abc7 called the utility and asked specifically about gilda, pg&e reacted quickly and surprisingly by mid-afternoon. >> she shouldn't have had to gone to you to get this taken care of. but what's important here is we have committed, we are going to work with her attorneys and we will be paying her what she is asking for to close the sale of her home. >> as to how soon exactly pg&e would not say, nor would pg&e talk about paying for the contents of this house. but for one family, at least, definitely progress. in san bruno, wade friedman, abc7 news. >> the marine mammal center is sausalito is caring for a sea lion shot at the wharf. they are calling him king neptune. shot in the back with a large caliber weapon. this is the second sea lion the marine center has treated this summer found in the area. jeff is in for lisa today. we are talking about -- >> cloudy, cool. >> but you see beauty there, and that's good. >> i do. i love all sorts. >> i'm with you. >> i like the cool temperatures. 60s today. not that bad out there. a nice day yesterday. got a little bit of sunshine by the afternoon. i think we will see that today. start out with the clouds and maybe some sun in between by the afternoon hours. a nice shot from the roof cam, the embarcadero and folks getting out and starting their morning run, walk. breakout the jackets for the morning and maybe a little bit for the afternoon. the complete forecast in just a few minutes. we will talk about a warming trend. >> you will like that. >> all right. >> also ahead, no runs and three more guys hurt. things get worse for the giants as they face the worst team in baseball. larry beil has the highlights coming up in this morning's sports. >> i heard 5,000. >> i'm going with 5,000. do i hear 6,000? it got into phoenix and finally dissipated there. it was the third haboob of the monsoon season. that's what they call it. they say the area is experiencing an abnormal number of dust storms but what sets this year apart is the size and power of those storms. weather experts say such massive dust storms occur in only a few laces, one obviously arizona and the sahara desert and parts of the middle east because of dry conditions and large amounts of sand. you can't have an haboob without a lot of sand. >> and they also get it for the burning man festival near reno. another week to go. a lot of people getting ready to head that direction. >> i bet a lot of people think that's a bad combination to have a festival and having an haboob moving in. but at the burning man they might appreciate it. it will add to the art. >> it does. let's talk about our weather, shall we? >> let's do that. >> cooler and we have some moisture. cooler if you like the fog. every day is beautiful here in the way area. that's for sure. good morning to you. saturday morning, 6:18 right now. a nice shot out there. you see the clouds kind of hang on. that will be the story throughout the day today. golden gate, check it out. a little drizzle to go along with the clouds and fog. as we head out to a beautiful shot of mount damage. high definition sunrise underway. we do have the marine layer. you can see the clouds. i read about the 2200, 2500 feet. so your temperatures look like this. we have temperatures in the 50s right now from fremont down toward livermore, all throughout the area. half moon bay, 57 degrees. that's where we are going to be at all day long with the clouds and cool conditions. a little bit drizzle along the coast. temperatures about ten degrees below average for today. warmer weather, though, on tap for next week. here's what is happening. area of low pressure spinning off the coast, bringing in the onshore flow. that's been with us the past week or so and it will be for another couple days. that will mean cooler conditions all across our area. fog along the coast throughout the day today. cloudy condition most areas. it will start to clear out as you head further inland. but temperatures only in the 07s out here. normally we are in the 80s and 90s. again, a good ten degrees cooler where we should be. i want to show you this. a tropical storm greg here. it is dissipate bug we may catch some of the moisture by the middle part of the week. so maybe some thunderstorms in our forecast by, say, wednesday. we will keep a close eye on it for you. in the meantime highs in the 60s and 70s with cloudy and cool conditions most areas. half moon bay, good morning. 58 degrees. and we will see lower 60s across the downtown area. only in the 50s though as you head out to ocean beach. upper 80s. the hotspot there. 70s further to the south in sonoma. the wine country only in the 70s. east bay 64 degrees. in oakland, and 69 union city. we will see 07s from fairfield to dublin, pleasanton did 76 degrees. as we head to the monterey bay area, 62 degrees there with clouds and cool conditions hang on. a little bit warmer out toward gilroy and hollister 70 degrees. warmer days by the middle part of the week, as i mentioned some 90s finally returning tuesday and wednesday. maybe a few more clouds and maybe a thunderstorm popping up, too. all eyes are on the tropical storm greg, as it tense to move to the west and we may get some of that moisture into our area. keep an eye on it. >> all right, jeff. thanks very much. dean harris joins us from new york to talk to us about what's coming on on "good morning america" at 7:00. dan. >> good to see you. thanks for the introduction. this saturday morning, some extraordinary weather topping the news this morning. you were talking about the local weather. some crazy stuff going on. fierce and deadly flooding in the northeast. and in the midwest, winds so high and so damaging they think it may have ban tornado. we will take you to both of these spots and give you a sense of what the forecast holds for the country at large. then a wild story out of new jersey. a husband and wife gunned down in in in a quiet suburban neighborhood. shots fired and the wife killed. the husband is accused of hiring a wit woman. how this elaborate plan came crashing down and the apparently incriminating text messages coming up. plus a consumer alert for parents and why back to school shopping could be filled with nasty and expensive surprises. we have an expert in to give you some advice on how to navigate a retail mind field out there. when your whole life is filmed, terry, just like me and you, then your wedding is likely to be a huge deal. such is the case for somebody named kim kardashian. i bet you have heard of her. >> oh, yeah. >> today is the big day. terry, we have questions. one, who is going to be there, how much is this thing going to cost? that's something we have in common, dan. >> neither of us were invited to the big wedding of the year. it's a major hole in my psyche. >> danny dan harris. thanks for that. >> have a great day. >> the raiders and niners meeting at candlestick park. second preseason game for both teams. last night the giants began a three-game series in huston hoping to gain ground on arizona. here's larry beil with this morning's sports. >> good morning. the giants are officially running on fumes, even more injuries. pablo sandoval out with a strained shoulder, orlando, cabrera a strained groin, eli whiteside concussion symptoms. zero offense again last night in houston. we are in deep mustache envy, folks. the astros, worst team in baseball going nowhere, but it doesn't matter. if you can't score, you can't win. second inning, mike fontenot, base hit. aubrey huff trying to score at second. out at the plate. ryan vogelsong did go seven innings. gave up two earned runs and three unearned. bottom of three, jbshuck down the line. the giants made two errors in the sixth and that opened for the pitcher, wandy rodriguez to cash in with a two-run single. he also tossed 8 shutout innings. giants shutout for the second straight game, 6-0. they stay 2 1/2 back because arizona lost. a's and jays in oakland. hungry for runs and they got some. josh willingham, that almost lands right by the wiling hams. a's on top, 2-zip. rich harden had a no-hitter through far. the great diving stop to get edwin encarnacion. 11 strikeouts, a career high. goes seven innings and gets the win. a's victorious, 2-0. nobody really cares about preseason results but there is more energy and desire when the 49ers and raiders meet as they will tonight at candlestick. the niners have won the battle of the bay the past couple of years. always fun to see a red and gold meeting silver and black. the raiders have been watching film of last week's niner game where smith and the others were sacked a total of six times. they may bring the house. they might be blitzing out on smith from the parking lot. >> i'm sure they will toughen up, just like we are on them. but we have to go out and win the football game. regardless of how they played last week, they can come out this week and score 50 points and have ten sacks on our offense which i don't think will happen but in the nfl every week is different. >> we will be ready this week. we built on what we had going into this week and just continue, continue to do the process and we are confident we will have a game we can be proud of on saturday. >> and especially in these times there's a lot to be said for job security. saint mary's coach, randy bennett, now has a decade of it. the school has given their beloved hoops coach a ten-year contract extension. in theory that will keep the highly successful leader of the gales there through the year 2021. he has built one of the best programs on the west coast. always in ncaa contention. he has posted a school record of 208 victories. that's a wrap on morning sports. mike shumann will be here with all of your highlights at five, six and eleven. have a great weekend, everybody! i'm larry beil. >> next at 6:30, california's overall unemployment picture goes from bad to worse with a number of people out of work jumping again last month. and the environmental benefits of plastic supermarket bags. an investigation reveals the influence of industry on california's schools.
