today is saturday, september wondering what went wrong? today is saturday, september 24th, 2011. captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning. welcome to today on a saturday morning. i m lester holt. and i m amy robach. i have to say ouch. i mean, it s painful to watch that kim delaney speech. very uncomfortable. you can imagine being in the crowd when this was happening. it was at a galla honoring former secretary of defense robert gates. she came up and made the remarks and started talking and rambling and ultimately, you saw the stage manager had to escort her off the stage. we re going to get more on that just ahead. also, the shocking discovery for missing utah mom susan powell. two years after she vanished, police have taken her father-in-law into custody. we ll talk live to susan s father, coming up. plus a dramatic rescue that was caught on tape. a hiker in california was caught on the side of a cliff. crews lowered down a harness to reach her and pull her to safety. we re going to get much more on that, just ahead. and then it s the end of all my children. i know, i should get a tissue for you. the show aired its last episode on friday, or did it? the show came to an entertaining conclusion with a cliffhanger that left fans wanting more. it s not who shot j.r. it s who did j.r. shoot. and a cliffhanger implies more episodes. but there s always the internet. maybe the tv movie. we ll talk more about that, coming up. first, let s get to the news headlines with melissa francis. good morning, everyone. we begin with that dead satellite that captured the world s attention. nasa posted on its official twitter site that the satellite crashed somewhere near the pacific ocean. a precise time and location are not yet known, but most of the satellite is believed to have burned up on re-entry. and the u.n. security council is expected to take up a request for palestinian statehood on sunday. the u.n. secretary general has forwarded the request from palestinian president mahmoud abb abbas. opposition is expected to scuttle the bid. but abbas was repeatedly applauded. in the trial of michael jackson s doctor is set to begin on tuesday. conregard murray is on trial for kelg the superstar with pr propofol. if convicted, murray faces four years in prison. and casey anthony s debt keeps going up. she now owes more than $200,000 to police for their investigation into her daughter, caylee s disappearance. the judge friday added more than 100 grand to the bill after getting new expense reports. anthony was acquitted of murdering caylee back in july. and the fbi says it s paid more than $2 million reward to tipsters for the information lead to go arrests of james whitey bulger and his long time girlfriend, catherine growth. the couple has pled not guilty to multiple charges. and a frightened woman was literally pried off the side of a rock. the 24-year-old woman and her male companion were climbing down eagle rock on thursday when they realized they weren t prepared for the steep dissent. he climbed back to the top, but she clung there for two hours until she could be rescued. he s fine. she has some minor injuries and words of praise for the deputies who came in and rescued her. diana nyad is stroking her ways through the waters of cuba. her goal is to swim 103 miles to florida. this is a 62-year-old swimmer s second attempt in as many months. nya s last attempt was ended by an asthma attack about halfway through the roughly 60-hour quest. amy could boyfriend. what were you thinking? you left me. scott williams is here with our first check of the weather. good morning lester and amy. of course, this is the first weekend of fall. it will feel more like summer as we move toward the intermountain west because of the ridge. but around the great lakes, it will feel like fall with clouds and showers. a little bit of a break right now for parts of the northeast. but eastern sections of north carolina, get ready for heavy rain as well as parts of the ohio and mid mississippi river valleys. we re going to keep clouds in the forecast for places like chicago as well as some showers. look for temperatures in the 90s through lonestar state. that s a looknerntng iestini an interesting morning around the bay area, 50s, 60s, near 70 in livermore. we are watching isolated showers coming upn out of the south not hitting the bay area but areas south of monterrey. something watching for the morning. tomorrow, the clouds are off to the west. a bigger chance of a little bit of rain. not today. we are going to see temperatures cooling down, turning windy this afternoon. tomorrow, that s when things get a little interesting. we will have more coming up in 15 minutes. sdwrooirks. nearing another recession, that fear is palpable on wall street where this week s stocks his a three-year low. nearly everyone is feeling the the pain, including retirees struggling to make ends meet. we get more now from cnbc s tyler mathisen. for joe and deloris bowyer of winter haven, florida, it wasn t supposed to be this way. the money that i retired with, i thought i could live forever. once they were able to afford to travel, but now they stick close to home. the money is not coming in like it used to, but it s going out a lot faster. reporter: as for this is savings, the returns are frustrating. i think it s about 0.7 of 1%. tens of millions of retired americans shay the bowyers pain. many feel it doesn t pay to save. the dow jones industrial average sits 16% below it s high for the year. home prices down 30% since 2005. t-bills pay less than 0.1%. and that five-year bank cd, 1.3% now compared with 4.2% in 2006. denver financial planner carol greggky sees the toll it takes on her clients every day. they re so tired. stop focusing on what you can t control. you can t control the market. you can control your budget. you can control where that extra money goes. reporter: for their part, joe and deloris bowyer are watching their pennies. we just go one day at a time and we re just enjoying life and each other. reporter: for today today tyler mathisen, nbc, new york. is there a glimmer of hope out there? let s bring back in melissa francis. melissa, thanks for coming back and talking about this. are things getting worse? you know, the fed came out this week and said that there s a downside risk of the economy. it s kind of like you think you might be failing a class and you get a note from the teacher saying, if you continue on this path, it doesn t look good. it s not that it s a surprise so much what they said. it s more it s a confirmation of what we re all feeling out there. that s why we saw the market lose the dow lost more than 700 points this week and it was really a reaction to that confirmation from the federal reserve which is normally very careful and very positive. they re saying, look, watch out below. not just stocks. you just saw tyler s story, thinking of safe place toes put your money. we re running out of places to save the cash, aren t we? without question. yesterday we saw gold fall by $100. silver was down 27% on the week. all the traditional safe havens have evaporated. when you talk to money managers, they say it s kind of too late to go out there and look for safety, anyway. those things have evaporated. the best thing you can do is stay put and stay steady at this point. because otherwise if you sell off you lock in the losses. at this point, there is no safety really out there. in some ways, it s sort of reassuring. you might as well not try. yesterday we saw stocks rise up somewhat. these massive falls when it comes up, was that more profit taking? it was exhaustion. i spent hours yesterday on the floor of the new york stock exchanges talking to traders. it s more exhaustion at the end of this week. there isn t a lot of optimism out there. and is this we keep hearing about a potential double dip recession. is the stock market necessarily a barometer of the overall economy? that is a big point of debate. a lot of people always thought it told you six to nine months out what the economy was going to do. that relationship has broken down a bit. right now, corporate profits have been stronger than the broader economy. that s what a lot of traders have clung to that corporate profits will maintain themselves even though there are so many people out of work. with the federal reserve thing, the economy is weak, it doesn t look like the stock market can keep up. time will tell that. anything to watch in the week ahead. there s a lot of fed speak, a lot of governors out there and giving speeches. we re get something economic data, but it s another week, really, to buckle up. get a new mattress and fill it. there s nothing to put under it any longer, right? that s true. yeah. sorry about that. it s not your fault. here is amy. it is the law that delivered sweeping changes to america s education system. but ten years later, the no child left behind act is undergoing major changes in a move that president obama says will better help children in schools. nbc s kristin welker has more. reporter: president obama announced the largest change to public education in nearly a decade. arguing our schools are failing our students. today as many as a quarter of our students aren t finishing high school. states can now opt out of no child left behind. president obama s signature domestic initiative which requires students to meet certain targets in reading and math by 2014 or schools face stiff penalties, including decreased federal funding. recent estimates show roughly 80% of schools were headed toward failure. teachers, too often, are being forced to teach to the test. here is how it works. states apply for a waiver from no child left behind by providing a written plan for improving the performance of students. if the waiver is granted, schools will no longer get failing grades for poor student test scores. but if for some reason schools slide backwards, it will move that waiver. reporter: but some republicans accuse the administration of abusing its power by side stepping congress. don t be tempted to use this opportunity to become a national schoolboard. does this give you too much power? i m giving away the power. i think that s what folks don t understand. we re giving the power to states and districts. reporter: one top school official in maryland says no child left behind highlighted the fact that too many kids have been underserved for too long, but no child left behind has outlived its usefulness. we need to be more innovative. reporter: turning a new page on public education and the way students learn. for today, kristin welker, nbc news, the white house. education, the economy and the upcoming election all big challenges facing president obama. chris matthews is host of nbc s hardball. good morning. good morning, amy. talk about the president s decision to make these changes to no child left behind. why did he decide to do this? that s a great question. the answer is congress can t get anything done. you have two points of view in the united states congress. one is revolution, it s time to cut everything no matter what the fight, cut the spending, say no to the president. on the other side, business as usual, let s make the government work. in this case, the president gave up on congress and said i m going to do it myself. you mentioned congress can t get anything done. on friday, senate democrats blocked a house plan to keep the government from a partial shutdown. now we have congress going away for the week. what s the likelihood they ll come together to avert this shutdown? i don t know. next week the senate is going to meet, they re not going to pass anything the house can accept. the house is out of business all next week. it looks like fema has is going to run out of money at least by tuesday, maybe the latest by wednesday. the federal government is going to run out of money by the end of the month, which is basically the end of the week. so the government is about to shut down again. and this is over 1-25th of 1% of the federal budget. here you have a congress which enjoys 1/8 of the american people fighting over 1/25% of the federal government. this is a calamity. i think this is what parties do right before military coups in other countries. the public, i think, is completely fed up with them. and we just heard lester and melissa talking about wall street having its workweek ever since 08. the president is hitting the campaign trail next week. what does he need to say at this point? he s not going to get his jobs bill through, either. the republicans are focused on spending perfect every time there s a vote, they want to cut spending. the president is trying to do two things. he wants to spend money now to create jobs, but then he agrees with the republicans, we have to cut the debt in the long-term. it s easier being a republican in the sense all you have to do is say cut, cut, cut. the president has a complex argument to make which he s not doing a very good job of making, i must say, is that we have to get people back to work, we have to get the economy rolling again or wee we re going to have a bigger deficit in the future. governor rick perry is getting really bad reviews from thursday s debate. he s gone from bad to worse some critics say at this point. how much do debates count at this point? what does it mean for rick perry? he has to break into the major leagues and he s performing like a aaa player in baseball terms right now. you haas to go back and practice. you know the old joke, how do you get to karn carnigie hall? practice, practice, practice. the next debate, he has to win. he has to get out and say what he has to say. his mistake this week was he had a whole riff prepared on the flip-flops of mitt romney and couldn t pronounce the words on television. he has to beat it or he s going to get knocked out this race by iowa. and chris, we have noncandidates making news, the latest poll, sarah palin coming within five points of president obama. then we have chris cristie saying, no b with wiem not running and then i read in the new york paper this morning that maybe he s giving it second thoughts. do you believe these noncandidates are not running? it s a great question right now because of perry s faltering. a lot of us thought sarah palin would be the big ringmaker behind perry coming in and help him win against mitt romney. she may be thinking seriously about getting in this race at this point because she doesn t have someone to make king. i think the tea party leader has to try to decide now, does she want the republican party to grab back the power from the tea party radicals, if you will, or does she want to get in there and win it for the tea party people? chris christie is the last host of the establishment. it s somewhere center right. that s why everyone wants him to get into the race. but it looks to me that romney is in good shape to hold the republican middle right now and the question is who is going to lead the right in the republican party? and i really think about perry faltering that sarah palin must be really edgy to get in this race. all right, chris matthews. it s an exciting time. it will make it interesting, for sure. thank you. ever since her mother, elizabeth edwards died of breast cancer, kate edwards has devoted her life to helping others with the disease. it s a journey she spoke about with andrea mitchell who recently revealed she, too, has breast cancer. reporter: before dawn in washington, 29-year-old kate edwards is starting a three-day, 60-mile walk for breast cancer research, honoring her mother, elizabeth. we talked about it doing it together. her outlook was nothing was impossible. she never gave up hope. even in her last week of life, she never gaim gave up hope that a cure could be out there and that she could beat this thing. reporter: now kate, a graduate of princeton and harvard law is embarking on another journey, quitting the law to create a foundation in her mother s name. it s going to be a program for young high schoolers through early college that will provide resources to kids who show a lot of potential but don t necessarily have the resources that they need to be successful. that would be exactly what my mom would do, first of all, just to make something really positive out of something difficult. is she with you in a lot of ways? absolutely. big choices that i make, little choices that i make. sort of everything i do, i hear her voice, the same way i did when she was alive. as her father fights charges he used campaign funds to cover up an affair. kate was at his side. that was an important show of support to the outside world. we ve always been there for each other in tough times and in good sometimes and we ve always been close as a family. my mom always talked about the people you surround yourself with, the people who you can lean on are the most important people. reporter: at elizabeth s funeral last december, kate read a letter her mother left for the children. i hope you will always know that, wherever i am, wherever you are, i will always have my arms wrapped around you. reporter: next month, when kate marries her long time boyfriend we talked a lot about the wedding and a lot of the details, and i ll be thinking about her a lot on that day. reporter: she promised elizabeth edwards will have her arms wrapped around her daughter ever step of the way. i think she would be making her mother quite proud. she would. she s had to grow up quickly and publicly, but she s done so with such grace. we want to congratulate this man, lester, the hardest working man at nbc has just added another big dooud duty. you ve just been named the host of date line. amazing news, so proud of you. how are you going to manage it? i laid it out to them. i m still doing today show weekend nightly news and i m only going to work monday through friday and saturdays and sundays. no, i m true. i ve been a fan of dateline for years and now i m kicking off the 20th season and it s pretty neat. it s a great show and it just got a little better, lester. congratulations. still to come, the jury dlbts a florida millionaire. i just shot my wife. where is your wife? she s right here on the floor. reporter: prosecutors claim ward s 911 call shows clear admission of his guilt. this defendant five separate times says the words, i just shot my wife. but ward s attorney tells jurors the shooting was nothing more than a tragic evidence. there has been no evidence presented in this case to dispute the fact that this was an accidental shooting during a struggle for the gun. from the beginning, the defense has claimed the millionaire developer s wife, diane, was depressed, drunk and tried to kill herself inside their gated orlando mansion. ward s attorneys say she was shot when they both grabbed at the gun. this is a case, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, about what bob ward did. prosecutors alleged bob ward had motive. his business was bankrupt and his wife about to be questioned under oath about the family s finances and lavish lifestyle. and all roads and only one road is that man sitting there is a murderer. over the course of the trial, jurors heard a parade of witnesses, but what the jury never saw was this jailhouse video of bob ward joking with his daughter. i ve been trying to get you into pajamas for years now. it s a relatively fall collection you ve got on. oh, great. well, hopefully i ll be out of this place next week. i can t wait. if bob ward is convicted of second degree murder, he could be sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. for today, kerry sanders, nbc news, orlando. scott williams has another check off our forecast. scott. good saturday to you, lester, and good saturday, everyone. a bit of a break now from new york city. we have a wonderful crowd on the plaza, including a future bride here. tell us your name and where you re from. kelly shandley, virginia beach, virginia. and when are you getting married? [ male announcer ] because enbrel suppresses your immune system, it may lower your ability to fight infections. serious, sometimes fatal events including infections, tuberculosis, lymphoma, other cancers, and nervous system and blood disorders have occurred. before starting enbrel, your doctor should test you for tuberculosis and discuss whether you ve been to a region where certain fungal infections are common. don t start enbrel if you have an infection like the flu. tell your doctor if you re prone to infections, have cuts or sores, have had hepatitis b, have been treated for heart failure, or if, while on enbrel, you experience persistent fever, bruising, bleeding, or paleness. get back to the things that matter most. good job girls. ask your rheumatologist if enbrel is right for you. this morning on today s real estate, refinancing your homes. many americans are hoping to save on their mortgages. sounds like a win-win decision, but is it? with us now is barbara corcoran. good morning. good morning, lester. 4.09% is the average for a 30-year fixed mortgage, 3.29% for a three-year fixed mortgage. let s say you bought your house five, ten years ago, this is big savings. this is a big opportunity to have the same house for less money. if your interest rates 5% or more. if your interest rate on a $250,000 mortgage today is 5% and you re refinance it at 4%, you ll save $2,000 a year. that s a lot of men. that s real cash. but we should tell the audience before you rush out to refinance right now, there s a catch, you have to qualify. and that s harder than it s ever been. you ve got to qualify. it s almost as if the bank doesn t want to give you the money. they re looking for very high credit ratings, in excess of 700, which is very high, and they re looking for 20% down. on a refinance. on a refinance. and if you qualify for that, there s still a lot of hurdles. there s always been paperwork associated with it, but there s a lot to go through. but it s almost as if there s a committee every day asking for one more thing. but if you use a mortgage broker, they really do the heavy lifting for you and they can outline for you exactly what the closing costs are going to be. we were talking about all the struggles in the economy at the beginning of the broadcast. is there a need to rush out and do this? is there a chance these rates could inch back up soon? can i tell you, that s the million-dollar question. i never thought they would be this low. don t ask me. who the heck knows whag going to happen. now we re looking at some of the homes on the market for less than $300,000. $300,000 is about the average, right? that s about the average. after 20%, what are you looking at? you re looking to add a $1,200 a month payment. as you re looking at these homes, think i can only that for $1,200 a month. we re going to show you a home in nashville on the market for $265,000. if you qualify for the lower rates, what are you getting? a craftsman style 1950s how that s been tucked away on an oversized private lot. inside this house, it s a nice, open floor plan with blond wood floors, extra baseboards and crown moulding across the top. it has dark wood cabinets, a breakfast count and a wine cooler comes with that house. it has big, sunny bedrooms, ceiling fans, wood floors and natural light throughout all the bedroom peps out back, there s a covered patio and a fire pit that to my eye looks like it s good enough for about 30 people roasting marshmallows. i can t imagine why you would have a pit that big, but there you go, all for $265,000. the next how is in new hampshire, which has low taxes. on this particular house, those taxes are only $500 a month. if you add into that financing 80% of it at the new 4% mortgage rate, it s going to only cost you $1,650 a month to own this huge victorious home. what do you get? when you see what you re going to get, you ll say, that is impossible. why am i living in a studio for $1650 a month. it sits on a big oversized acre. it has the largest northern red oak in the county and inside, look at those rooms. it s meticulous. it has all the things you want in an old house but they ve eliminated all the things you don t want in an old house. there s a great look at the living room. wood floors, stain glassed windows and an angle tile fireplace. rolling green lawns and it s all done for you. almost looks like a fairly tail house in every way. what i particularly like is that bo porch. who wouldn t fall in love with that wrap around porch and virginia randa and wrap around them? this is a great big house for a little money. barbara corcoran, thank you so much for coming on. my pleasure. up next, the ending of all my children. she moved here from seattle ten months ago in an act of mutual friendship. her friend is amanda knox. i was going to do some things in my life and i thought it would be great to have the support she could give me. it was for me and for her. they met when they lived in the same dorm at the university of washington. i could always hear her through the walls. a friendship blossoms never imagining it would bring them here of all places, an italian courtroom 7,000 miles from home. since moving here, paxton has been a familiar face behind the defense table seated with members of knox s family. do you make eye contact? yeah. when the cameras are there and she can turn around. she visits her six times a month. do you only talk about the trial or other things? sometimes we say we need to talk about other things. other times it s impossible, you can t not talk about home and the things you miss and the things you are thinking of writing. she works for a newspaper. with amanda s help, is learning italian. she s a staunch defender of knox. not only on the question of her guilt in the murder of kercher but of knox s character and reputation that took a beating during the initial trial. there s no way that i would move here or even give a second thought to this person if she s what they describe. there s no way i would be friends with that type of person. she dismisses the notion was a self-less act. it s not like i m sitting here waiting to see her twice a week. it means a lot to amanda s family. the fact she would move over there and her friends have been loyal from day one. she truly has amazing friends. madison has known her longer as an inmate than she did in college. it means everything to amanda. like her mom, madison hopes the pendulum of italian justice is swinging her way. i expect she ll be on the next plane to seattle. what about you? i would be on that plane. i would definitely be on that plane. she s just part of the support network. her step dad moved there to visit her on a regular basis. they did not want to give her a sense she s been abandoned. everything riding on next month in the verdict. the whole family gathered now. they hope it s one of the final weekends and they will come home soon. i think a lot of people in america are waiting to find out. fascinating case. still to come, the cheer lead egg coach you love to hate. one-on-one with glee. and patience. mine recommends antacid tablets and only one taco. i m 30. i m christy. where are you from? from chicago. cara, grand rapids, michigan. sherry. i m just here for the ride. let s get a check off your weather on this saturday, of course, as we talk about the forecast we re going to keep some fog as well as showers in the forecast. eastern sections of the carolinas, the mid-atlantic and that upper level low will churn around the great lakes giving cloud cover cooler temperatures. but a ridge in the west will keep things really warm in the 80s as well as 90s. so for tomorrow, you ll want to keep that rain gear handy, as well. that s a look at an interesting start to this first weekend of fall. we had a few still seeing isolated rain showers aroundhe allty ma pass in livermore, un earlier around san jose and still a slight chance the coastal range might have an isolated shower. all the clouds you see offshore, that s headed our way for tomorrow. today, partly cloudy, cooler temperatures. 70s, 80 sz inland. 60s around the inner bay. tomorrow, good chance of rain for the north bay. temperatures quickly rebound as we warm up for the first half of the new week. reporter: steven powell entered a not guilty plea friday, his first court appearance after he was formally charged with 14 counts of child pornography possession. it was last month when investigators raided his home in connection with susan s disappearance. they say they discovered thousands of images of young girls and women in various states of undress. the pictures and video taken without their knowledge. among the victims secretly shot, say prosecutors, susan powell and sisters who were just 8 and 10 years old. we re going to seek justice for the children in this case and we re going to hold steven powell accountable for every crime that he s committed in pierce county. reporter: the police raid on steven powell s home in what they call a ten-year stash of pictures came just hours after he spoke to nbc news last month. during our interview, steven claimed his daughter-in-law susan disappeared after she ran off with another man. she was very flirtation and sexual with people. susan s father calls those allegations disgusting and false. clearly, plablatantly an attt to assassinate my daughter s character. reporter: josh powell wouldn t comment this week, but he told police susan vanished after he took their boys camping in a snowstorm nearly two years ago. police call josh their only person of interest. because josh powell shares a home with his father, he ll be back in court next week to try to regain custody of his two children who are now with child protective services. meantime, steven powell faces multiple felonies. for today, miguel al miguair. with us now is the father of susan powell, his attorney, frank cox. chuck, i know you have no warm feelings for steven powell. he has said hurtful things about your daughter in the past. react, if you can, to these charges that he now faces. it fully took my by surprise. i never got along very well with him, but i had no idea the extent of the issues that have been brought up the. had susan ever raised any black flag issues in her relationship she had with him? absolutely, she was uncomfortable with him. she said something had happened. she didn t want to go into details. she did want to get away from him. and, ann, let me ask you about some of the images in the home were of minors. i know the children of josh and susan, chuck s grandchildren lived in the home with steven powell. they ve been placed in foster care. chuck, i know, is going back to court on wednesday on the child custody issue. you re not his attorney of record on that. what can you tell us about that? well, the children, of course, were placed in protective custody. and that s kind of a silver lining here for chuck and judy in terms of seeing their grandkids again because they haven t been able to up till now because of josh and steven s actions and desires and court actions. so what happens now is they go into court, there s an issue about temporary custody for chuck and judy, where they could have the grandchildren because, of course, it s not a safe home. and, chuck, you were in court yesterday and got a win on another issue. steven and josh powell were threatening to release your daughter s journals to the public, journals she had written at a younger age. you won an injunction against the release. why was that important to you and what do you think the point of them want to go release those was? well, their point, i believe, is simply they wanted to embarrass us, they wanted to attack sue an s character. and the importance is, they had no right to publish her personal journals. and i was very thankful that that s the way the ruling went. and, ann, let me turn back to you again regarding if arrest of steven powell. as i said, he had said hurtful things in the past about susan and suggested maybe she had run off with another person. the fact he s been arrested now on what a appears to be a totally unrelated charge, how does that affect the missing person case here, and his credibility in it? well, the fact of the matter, there was information early on that he said he wanted to share with susan. so the thought in the beginning walls maybe he could be involved and maybe he had her some place alive. so it s come full circle. there was a creep factor here and she said he creeped her out. but no one had any idea the extent to which he was involved in voyeurism, pictures of susan, etcetera. this has to be digested by law enforcement. but the other part of it is does he have information about josh and does she have an incentive somehow to point the finger at this only person of interest they ve had so far in this tragic disappearance case of susan cox powell?
