MSNBC The Daily Rundown November 4, 2010

everyone future president to take a shellacking like i did. >> well, president obama faces a new washington reality after getting clobbered in the midterm election. but not all is bleak for the democrats. as a congressman in colorado does cart wheels. and his counter part running for senate also has a reason to celebrate this morning. >> because this is our movement. this is our moment. this is our morning in america. >> well, look who is celebrating despite a mixed bag of success and failures, sarah palin celebrates with another video. notable missing person, joe miller. it's thursday, november 4th. i'm chuck todd. savanna is on assignment headed to asia. and mitch mcconnell. he didn't get the let's all work together post election memo in a speech he'll give in about two hours. he'll double down on his pledge to make obama a one-term president. also pat toomey will join me now that republicans have become a powerful opposition party, how will they oppose the president? shortly after takeoff, showering debris from the sky. prompting an emergency landing. how safe is the world's largest passenger plane? let's get to the rundown. 36 hours later and we're not finished yet. a pair of big races are still too close to call. one up in washington state. democratic senator patty murray has the edge over dino rossi. in alaska it may take a lot longer. election officials say it may be december before they sort through the 80,000 some write-in votes to see if they're for lisa murkowski and if people spelled her name right and included her last name. what if it's just lisa m. republican joe miller is trailing but says he's not conceding anything. with me to sort it all out, mark murray, who is still at our election headquarters in new york city. walk me through what to expect in the two big senate races. then tell me how many undecided house races are out there. >> in the undecided house race, the voting of the write-in ballots will kbin next week. as you just mentioned, it could last all the way through to december. right now write-in has a healthy lead over joe miller. but we don't know how many are for murkowski. she's acting as if she has won this thing. in washington state patty murray widen her lead. it came from a surge of uncounted votes from seattle, washington, area. which is certainly her base and the democratic base of that state. most analysts and democrats i've chatted with feel she will emerge as the winner. but dino rossi has jet to concede. their campaign is arguing there's still votes to be counted and it could be rossi vote. >> and, mark, how many undecided house races are still left? the pickup number for republicans still stands at 60. >> it still stands at 60. it could go as high at 63. there are ten races that are undecided. republicans have the lead in three. democrats have the lead in the other seven. so watch for that number to go up to 63 by the end of the election cycle. >> a couple races that has been called where the candidate who lost hasn't conceded. a congressman who lost according to the associated press but is not conceding. we could have november election month. thanks very much. if senator murkowski can pull off a victory it would be the first successful write-in candidacy in over 50 years. kirsten welker caught up with the incumbent senator for an exclusive interview. >> good morning, chuck. lisa murkowski says she's not ready to declare victory yet. she's cautiously optimistic. she says if she wins she will caucus with the republican party, the party that didn't support her during the where-in bid. >> i work with people within my own conference that maybe they haven't been too generous or welcoming in my write-in effort. but i still need to work with them. >> murkowski also reflected on sarah palin, who supported murkowski's opponent joe miller. >> you comment that had you would not support her for president. do you standby that statement? >> yes, yeah. >> why? >> i'm looking for somebody as a presidential nominee, as ab candidate. i'm looking for somebody that has a breath of experience not only in government but a truly more worldly approach. i don't think sarah palin has that. >> and murkowski says she also credits the late alaskan senator ted stevens for being a major force in her campaign and career. election officials are hoping to start counting some of those ballots by next week. chuck? >> thank you, kristen welker. we're going to have to send her more reinforcements. the president says he gets it. he takes some responsibility for the democrats' big losses on tuesday, but insists both parties need to look forward, not backwards. >> what this american people don't want from us, especially here in washington, is to spend the next two years refighting the political battles of the last two. but i do hope to make progress on the very serious problems facing us right now. and that will require all of us, including me, to work harder at building senses. >> mike viqueira is live for us at the white house. well, viq, mitch mcconnell in a little less than two hours isn't reading off the same playbook as the president, is he? >> reporter: well, it's interesting. what choice does mitch mcconnell have, chuck? he's going to be getting it from both sides. john boehner can run the house anything he wants to. provided he keeps his troops in mind, and they always do. mitch mccome is in the senate. that's where all the stuff the conservatives want will be bottled off up. yesterday an ugly mess when it comes to process. he regrets all that. he feels bad about all the democrats he was close to. good public servants who had lost. he wants to talk about cooperation. when the dysfunction of washington ultimately comes down, and it will come down. whether during the lame duck or february and john boehner getting his conservatives in line, or later in the year when you're talking about the spending bills. both sides are trying to lay the predicate. they're the ones trying to reach out. they are the one who is will try to be reasonable throughout all of this. the president left openings to that end. taxes, energy, not going to get what he got out of the house. nuclear power, natural gas, things we can agree on. that got very ugly in the last weeks of the campaign. the little item in the health care bill making all businesses report any expense over $600 left open the possibility of wiping that off the books. nancy pelosi, what about her future? here's what she told abc yesterday. >> no regrets. we believe we did the right thing and we worked very hard in our campaigns to convey that to the american people. >> are the odds you'll stay? >> we always do things by consensus. when we have that consensus we'll have an announcement to make. >> so madam speaker ending her historic tenure. will she stick around? maybe trade the speaker's gavel back and forth? who knows. chuck? >> how soon is she making calls? supporters are making calls to see if she has the votes? >> i think you can expect -- i don't know for sure. they're going to gather to organize in the middle of this month. not the speaker election election. that doesn't come until january. the republicans will gather to see who they want to stand for their leadership. when they're together we'll hearn r hear an announcement from the spiker. >> mike viqueira on a roll this morning. no rain will stop you. your vocabulary is unbelievable. >> i haven't even started on the the japanese. >> fair enough. for all the talk about the tea party tidal wave, the end results were mixed. about one-third of tea party backed candidates won their races. but that didn't stop sarah palin from taking the victory lap herself on behalf in this new ad. watc watch. >> i'm confident and i am hopeful. this is our movement. this is our moment. this is our morning in america. we're going to stand up, and we're going to speak out. it may take renegades going rogue to get us there. it may take folks shaking it up to get there. we have to do this together. >> well, many folks like to say that the tea party doesn't believe it has a leader, but clearly sarah palin believes she's the tea party's leader. no sign of christine o'donnell or joe miller in there. on average slightly more than half of the candidates she endorsed won their races. turning to the markets less than 30 minutes before the opening bell. becky quick joins us with a preview. now a day later after all the fed news plus what the president said yesterday. will we see a different reaction from the markets today? >> no way, chuck. we are going full steam ahead. dow futures up by triple digits above fair value. we could be starting with a triple digit gain for the dow again. this is more of the same stuff working its way through, and you see this after the dow closed at the highest level in two years yesterday yesterday. the fed is pushing this easy money policy. that means you'll continue to see stocks move higher. that's not to say there's not concerns out there. the jobless claim if the last week jumped to 457,000. it's above the 450,000 level that people are trying to set as the new floor for job claims. it's concerning when you watch the other prices for other assets going around. oil is above $85 a barrel. that's a concern that as the fed continues to push people into stocks and out of treasuries that you'll see stock market money go to other assets, too. places like commodities where we've seen a huge run over the past several months. if consumer are hit with the oil tax or the gasoline tax at the pump. for now it's full steam ahead for the stock markets. you do have to watch around the edges what it means for other markets as well. right now the dow is up triple digits. >> we'll see if it sustains. thanks very much. >> thanks. well, he's the newly elected republican senator from pennsylvania. up next, the daily rundown interview with a man who is tea party before there was a tea party. senator elect pat toomey from pennsylvania with his party vowing to make the president a one-term president. what's his plan once he gets to washington? and quantis grounds its fleets after an engine blows out mid flight. first a look ahead at the president's schedule. he has a big cabinet meeting. that's when we'll hear publicly from the president after that meeting. you're watching "the daily rundown." hi. you know, if we had let fedex office print our presentation, they could have shipped it too. saved ourselves the hassle. i'm not too sure about this. look at this. >> i don't think so. i think mitch mcconnell and i are both going to be supporting the republican party in 2012. no surprise. for the next two years president obama is going to be the president. in the meantime, i want to look for ways to work with him so that we can get this economy moving again, get the job growth that we need. get spending under control. and if the president is willing to, you know, compromise and work with us, as he's indicated he's interested in then i hope we can make progress. >> let me go to health care. you want too repeal it? >> and replace it with a set of alternative reforms that will lower costs, improve access and maintain good quality health care. >> one of the things senator mcconnell is going to propose is he believes you have to force votes on this until something changes with the health care law. i want to put up exit poll numbers. there doesn't seem to be a mandate this from the public. frankly for either position on this. nationally we asked do you want to keep the health care bill or expand it. 47% wanted that. 48% said repeal it. in pennsylvania a majority said leave the plan alone or expand it. 45% were for repeal it. how do you square that with this intention by some republican leaders and say there's a mandate to deal with this up front? >> well, as you know, you can get any result you like depending on how you ask a question in a poll. throughout this campaign i emphasized the need to replace this bill that was just passed with an alternative set of reforms. and when you talk about what those alternatives are, and it's clear to people that it's going to lower cost, for instance, by giving individuals the opportunity to deduct the cost of health insurance by introducing more competition than we have today among insurance providers. by providing medical malpractice liability reform. there's a strong support for all those items. our alternative has much more support than the giant bill that's going to have the government interfering with health care decisions. >> at what point do you look at it and say, well, look, it's just not going to get through. you're not going to get 80% of what you want or even 75% because there's a majority in the senate or frankly you only need 41 senators to make sure nothing would get through. at what appoint do you set aside this debate and focus on the economy and focus on job creation? >> well, my number one focus is on the economy and job creation. that has to be item number one. the number one goal has to economic growth and the job creation that comes with it. >> the one vote that's going to come up very early in the new congressional term will be to raise the debt ceiling. it's a fact of life. when you're a member of congress you had to deal with this during your six years. can you -- do you feel as if you have a way to vote against this and make sure the government doesn't shut down? >> let's see the context we're in at the time the vote comes. we have to get serious about getting this budget urn control. ef to do it in a context of expanding growth. we cannot continue running $1.5 trillion deficits. we can't be defaulting on existing debt either. it's time we got serious about this. we have to look at all these pieces when you approach this question. >> so you don't rule out voting. >> i want to see where we are when the vote comes and what the context is and what we've been able to -- what kind of progress we've made on the budget. let's look at where we are then. >> when you hear the words everything is on the table, the deficit commission that's taking place, and i know the deficit is a real focus of yours when you were at club for growth and all that. when you hear everything is on the table and you hear democrats and president obama talk about entitlement reform, what is on the republican side or the conservative side of the aisle that you say we're going to put this on the table since, you know, the democrats are doing something that we know is tough for their base to accept. >> well, look, i mean the spending cuts are always, you know, creating some friction with somebody. so anybody that advocates a series of reductions and expenditures is going to incur, you know, some blowback for doing that. but i think we've got to do it. i'm not interested in anything that's going to impede economic growth. so if you're thinking about a tax increase, you know, that's going to be counter productive. >> right. what about defense? >> i think there are areas within the defense budget that we have to look at. that have to be on the table. we have to make sure the men and women in harm's way, and there are many of them in afghanistan and still in iraq, they've got to have the are so sources they need. but does thefaul that go out and insist on buying weapons that the pentagon doesn't want. that's totally unacceptable. >> senator elect pat toomey from pennsylvania this morning. congratulations again. s r havin >> you got it. coming up, we'll introduce you to the new kids on the block. the senate's incoming class. more are not strangers to politics, believe it or not. plus up in smoke. the effort to legalize pot in california falls short. we'll see if it comes back. first our washington speak. shellacking. it's the word all over washington today. shellacking was president obama's word to describe the beating his party took in the midterm losses on tuesday. house seats. a close second is george bush's thumping in 2006. if you have washington speak you would like us to clarify, or get suggestions for other party leaders send them in.
