WRC Today April 27, 2010

next-generation iphone. he says he s already returned the phone to apple, so what exactly are police investigating today, tuesday, april 27th, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and welcome to today on this tuesday morning. i m meredith vieira. i m matt lauer. you get the feeling these former and current executives at goldman sachs are waking up today and probably aren t thinking this should be fun. this is going to be a rather contentious hearing. you re right. goldman is facing allegations that it made billions at the expense of clients using methods that capitalized on the housing meltdown. today s testimony comes a week after the securities and exchange commission filed a civil fraud case against the wall street giant. much more on that in a moment. also, talking about new concerns at the site of that sunken oil rig off the coast of louisiana. crews are using robot submarines to try to stop the well from leaking oil into the gulf. this morning that oil slick has expanded so much, it can actually be seen from outer space. we ll get the latest on that situation in a live report coming up. then when you think of the quintessential 80s teen princess, one came comes to mind molly ring ringwald. the star of pretty in pink, and the breakfast club, two coming of age movies that remain wildly popular today. this mning she ll join us to talk about those roles and her new book. she just raced here like ten seconds ago. we were betting she wouldn t make it but she made it because she s a pro! this morning that showdown on capitol hill between a senate panel and key goldman sachs executives. nbc s kelly o donnell has the latest on this. kelly, good morning. reporter: good morning, matt. today is all about the politics of wall street with intense pressure on those gold man executives to explain and answer charges that they misled some of their clients in what lawmakers call a casino-like atmosphere. senate democrats say that changing the regulations and reforming wall street should be a simple choice between right and wrong. but turns out, it s not that black and white. first came the blame the other guy strategy. the only thing republicans stand for is standing together. the days of taking the democrats word for it are over. reporter: while republicans predict some wall street reform will eventually pass the motion is not agreed to. reporter: they blocked senate democrats first attempt. government solutions to big, complex problems like this one are rarely as effective as they re made out to be. reporter: reform is complex, but turning up the heat is easy. each day that the republican minority delays us, wall street wins and main street loses. reporter: enter the wall street street giant goldman sachs. gold man sakchs senior officials sitting before the senate the evidence shows that goldman repeatedly put its own interests in profits ahead of the interest of its clients. reporter: hundreds of pages of documents have been released, including company e-mails. here, the fabulous fab boasted about exotic trades he created o without understanding the complications of those mon stros its. while gold man said it lost money in 2002007, the company benefited by betting against the housing market. it should not be a surprise to anyone that the 2007 year is the one that i m most proud of to date. extraordinary profits. goldman sachs countered by highlighting more favorable e-mails. the chief executives is expected to tell congress we certainly did not bet against our clients. senator carl levin will try to show that they did. they were specifically betting against the securities that they were selling. i would like, hopefully, them to acknowledge that they did that. reporter: and in the prepared statement before the senate committee today, the ceo will say that they did nothing wrong but will acknowledge they could have done a better job explaining just how complex the securities they traded are. now that vote that went down is just a first step. democrats can try as early as today to bring it to the floor again but behind the scenes negotiations keep going on between republicans and democrats to try to fashion out the specifics of what this new regulation would look like. kelly o donnell on capitol hill this morning, thank you very much. senator clair mccaskill, a democrat from missouri, serves on the subcommittee that will question goldman sachs top executives today. senator, good morning to you. before we get to the goldman hearing with, let me ask you about the vote last night where republicans blocked further debate on this financial reform. you said it is politics, raw bare-knuckled politics, the kind americans are so sick of, they want to throw up. but basically it is a temporary deal. you know where this is going to end up, don t you? that s the point. why? why do we play these games? this is a serious problem, let s get to work. the ranking republican on the banking committee said we know what happened, we know what we need to do to fix it and we ve worked on it for 15 or 16 months. this is just what s been going on in washington. the republicans are banking on something. they re banking that the american people won t be paying close attention, that they re on the side of wall street and we re trying to fix the problem. but you don t expect them to stay even if you want to accuse them of being on the side of wall street, in an election year they can t possibly benefit from that. i mean who knows? this is beyond comprehension that they re refusing to let us debate. that is nonsense. we just want to debate the bill. they wouldn t even offer amendments in committee. they clearly are calculating that the public is so sick of all of us, that if this thing fails because we re in charge, we ll get blamed. that s the calculation. moving on to these hearings with these top goldman sachs executives, past and present. senator, can these guys get a fair shake in front of this committee today? i mean we know there is public outrage against wall street banks. and any time you have outrage against individuals or a group and they come before a senate hearing, the cold, hard truth is, lawmakers tend to do some grandstanding, they want to appear on the news looking tough. will these guys be listened to today or are they just going to get bashed? well, i think they ll be listened to. i m going to go out of my way to make the point that this was lemming like behavior. one guy on wall street told me the only thing we were afraid of is whether or not we got a bad article in the wall street journal. we weren t afraid of regulators. this was industrywide this casino mentality where they were making up stuff to bet on. literally, that s what they were doing. let me ask you this have you already decided that goldman sachs is guilty of the fraud charges leveled against it by the s.e.c.? because you came out last night and said the s.e.c. was in a coma before they acted on goldman. well, the way they acted on goldman was to file fraud charges. have you already been judge and jury here? don t they deserve a day in court? absolutely. and the question here really, matt, is not whether or not they have legally or illegally acted. the question is right and wrong. good old-fashioned right and wrong, moral or improperly. i think then tire activities of wall street over the last five years as they created more and more complex stuff to bet on, they were like the casino but they had less regulation than las vegas. sounds like what you re saying is the question is, maybe they didn t break the rules, maybe there weren t rules in place to stop them from doing what they did. which is exactly the point. that is exactly why today, when we get another chance to vote on debating the appropriate amount of regulation on wall street, i m hoping the republicans quit playing games and let us get to work. senator clair mccaskill, good luck today. thanks for your time this morning. nine minutes after the hour. oil from that sunken drilling platform off the coast of louisiana is expected to wash ashore in the coming days. that as crews try to shut off the underwater wells that s already leaked tens of thousands of gallons into the sea. nbc s ron mott is in new orleans with the latest. reporter: good morning. a really windy start to the day today. we ll see if weather plays a role down on the gulf, but this is shaping up to be a crucial day because we may learn whether they are able to shut off this oil leak down in the gulf and if they are not, this cleanup could take a whole lot longer. the fight against the burgeoning oil leak in the gulf is massive in scope. spread across 1,800 square miles. the battle was waged underwater and on the surface monday where boats are trying to narrow a widening problem runaway oil destined for the shore. there is no way we will pick up all the oil that s being released. reporter: officials say that impact may come this week so they re depending on 72-hour trajectory maps to sound the alarm for communities that could span from louisiana to florida. we are confident we can give enough anticipated notice. reporter: on a coast guard flight monday, oil was easily spotted. there s lots of it. its distinct smell clear, even 500 feet in the air. most of it is an oily sheen, the lighter colored water seen here. but there are also long streaks of thicker oil, brownish colored, some orange, bobbing and bubbling with the waves. as the coast guard now searches for survivors, the coast guard is trying to plug the leak. plan b requires drilling a relief well, a la borous process with no guarantee of success, something environmentalists fear. the grass is the base of the food chain. the more we lose that grass, the more we lose the food supply, the more the fish decline, the more we lose our blue crabs. reporter: officials have already spotted a pod of whales which haven t been affected. ron mott, thank you very much. let us get a check of the other stories making headlines this morning from ann who s at the news desk. ann, good morning. good morning, everyone. also in the news this morning, arizona s tough new immigration law sparked new backlash on monday including new protests and calls for boycotting the state. the law directs police to question people about their immigration status if there is any reason to suspect they re in the u.s. illegally. mexico s president has said the new law could harm u.s.-mexican relations. three weeks after the death of 29 miners in west virginia, the worst coal mining disaster in the u.s. in 40 years, a hearing will be held. this morning president obama meets with members with a group of ways to look to reduce the federal deficit. he hopes to forge a bipartisan consensus on ways to improve america s fiscal health. a federal appeals court has ruled a class action lawsuit against walmart can go forward. the lawsuit covers more than 1 million employees and accuses the company of discriminating in the way it pays female workers. overseas markets are mostly lower this morning. cnbc s trish regan is at the new york stock exchange. what s the focus today? well, comes right back to goldman sachs. every eye on the street is going to be on this investment bank today watching these hearings. it is not just goldman that s in focus here but the entire financial sector. we ll have to watch those stocks very carefully. the concern right here on wall street is if we do start to see significant financial reform and there is political pressure mounting to that no doubt, what will that mean for bank earnings? that s the discussion. they re also watching some of the european markets and the fed begins its two-day meeting on interest rates. trish regan, thanks. a most unusual protest in kiev s parliament this morning. opposition lawmakers pelted the speaker with eggs and set off smoke bombs. unhappy that their parliament was voting to allow russia s navy to remain in the region. here s a reason to hooray for hollywood. a fund-raising drive that s saved the famous hollywood sign that overlooks los angeles. developers wanted to build there but now that land will be protected. and in new hampshire, some big attention for a very small horse. his name is einstein and he may be the tiniest horse in the world. born last week on a farm that raises miniature horses, he weighed just six pounds and was only 14 inches tall. the average is 21 inches tall. he s already really big on the internet. 10,000 hits already. a lot of people horsing around. it is now 7:14. let s go back to good morning. the morning clouds have broken upment here is a live view from our camera. blue sky showing up and taking over around our region, we re in the 50s and off to a cool start. it will be a rather chilly day with highs only in the low 60s. blustery northwest wind. clouds may be moving back in later this morning into the early afternoon, just a slight chance of an additional sprinkle. sunny tomorrow and warming up with dry weather thursday and friday. that s your latest weather. there is new drama over the leak of apple s latest version of the iphone. now police are getting involved. nbc s jeff rossen is here with the latest. this all began with a stupid mistake in a bar. it ended with a huge embarrassment for apple. their super secret iphone prototype exposed. police are going after a blogger raiding his house for answers. hey, i m jason chen. this is the new iphone. here are some of the new features. reporter: it is not the roll outapple wanted. the back is flush. there s no more roundedness. reporter: the company s top-secret gold mine released by a blogger. on the website gizmodo.com. the new iphone is still a prototype, not set for release until june. so how did jason chen get it so early? police have now raided his california home to find out if he broke any laws. according to the search warrant, investigators hauled out his hard drives, digital cameras, cell phones, chen s american express bill and cop tiz of his checks. the man who had so much to say online this is quite a bit bigger than the other one. reporter: suddenly clammed up overnight. i m sorry, i have no comment. i would refer to you my lawyer. everything i ve published is accurate. reporter: the drama started here at this california bar. last month an apple employee accidentally left the new iphone inside. someone found it and reportedly sold it to gizmodo.com for $5,000. suddenly chen had one of the hottest scoops and blew apple s secret wide-open online. apple, steve jobs, probably fuming that this happened. you can t imagine a ceo that is more upset the day he sees this come out on a blog. there s his baby just sitting there for all the world to see before he gets to announce it. reporter: the website claims it gave the forbidden phone back to apple but the video is still up for everyone to see. the rest is pretty much just an iphone. reporter: in a letter to investigators, gizmodo s parent company says, under both state and federal law, a search warrant may not be validly issued to confiscate the property of a journalist. we expect the immediate return of the materials that you confiscated from mr. chen. inside apple, they re sitting there first wanting to know, hey, did this happen for real? like did this really just happen to us? b, did this guy make this happen or is this an honest mistake? just such an incredible story unlike anything we ve ever seen before. that is for sure. some bloggers say apple executives are actually driving this police investigation, but so far apple won t comment on that or anything else. by the way, that employee who left the iphone in the bar still has his job. but is it the same job? yeah, right. he s cleaning toy leilets now. exactly. here s matt. we have not seen very much of president george w. bush since he left office nearly a year-and-a-half ago. partly because he s chosen to stay out of the political spotlight. and because he s been busy writing his new book. this morning we have details as to just what will be in it. nbc s andrea mitchell has more on that. good morning. good morning, matt. the book will be called decision points. even though it will not be out for another six months, here s a look at the cover. the publisher says it will be a strikingly candid account of george bush s eight years in the white house. it is a new george w. bush. the former president here teaming up with bill clinton in haiti. our mission is to help fill the gaps of human needs. reporter: once political adversaries, now they are members of an exclusive club. relatively young, active former presidents of the united states. in haiti on a mission for the current president and reflecting on lessons from katrina. there s an expectation amongst people that things are going to happen quickly. and sometimes it s hard to make things happen quickly. reporter: he is making speeches around the world and closer to home. first i m pleased to report, there is life after the white house. laura and i are happy, healthy and home, right here in the promised land. reporter: there s the new house in dallas, and the ranch, the proeposed bush library and southern methodist university and decision points, 14 key moments like the night of the contested election in 2000. i m not conceding anything. reporter: 9/11, when he had to make important decisions returning to washington aboard air force one. in the situation room when he ordered the invasion of iraq. combating hiv/aids in africa. and his controversial decisions on the financial crisis, afghanistan, and katrina. all in the book, what the publisher describes as intimate, unprecedented details on the young george bush s decision to quit drinking. his discovery ofis relationship with his family. unlike dick cheney, the former president is not attacking his successor, although he has told other republicans he does not disagree with cheney s decision to speak out. the bush family has a strong sense of propriety about these kinds of things. his father was not critical of bill clinton. quite the opposite. he cooperated with him in every way that he could and of course post-presidency in many, many ways. i think that president george w. bush has the same sense that s just inappropriate for a former president to go down that path. the former president said he does not mitt the spotlight and is enjoying his requirement from politics, but there will be plenty of attention come november when he publishes his version of his life and, of course, the bush presidency. matt? andrea mitchell in washington this morning, thank you very much. i agree with andrea. because he has chosen to stay so far out of the spotlight, and not has not spoken out on some of the issues right now, i think a lot of people are going to be interested in hearing that. just ahead, the remains of an aspiring dancer, laura garza, discovered 16 months after she was last seen alive leaving a bar with a convicted sex offender. her brothers and cousin speak out in an just ahead, 80s icon molly ringwald. she reflects on those days and tells what you she s up to now after your local news. honda accord and toyota camry stand behind their powertrain for up to 60,000 miles. chevy malibu stands behind theirs for up to 100,000 miles. which makes it pretty clear whose standing out front. a consumers digest best buy two years running. chevy malibu. compare it to anyone and may the best car win. during the spring event, qualified lessees can get a low mileage lease on this new malibu ls for around $199 a month. call for details. see your local chevy dealer. they asked me to get in contact with nicholas because he was out of town. the lead investigator had asked me if i knew of michael kors watch. i told him i had no knowledge of her owning a michael kors watch. after that he was able to come in contact with nick. when they got back home, they were searching through her stuff and did find the casing of the box. that confirmed that that was her watch. i know, nick, that on friday you got the phone call that i m sure you have dreaded confirming that this was your sister s remains. can you tell me about that call and what happened next? i received a call on friday afternoon, like around 4:00. i was in my house alone and then the investigator called me and he gave me the bad news and i didn t know what to do. then i called my cousin and my girlfriend to come to the house because i had news that i didn t know what to do. and my mother, she wasn t in my mouse at that time and i didn t know what to do. i didn t want to be alone to give her the bad news that i had received. and when she arrived home, i didn t know what to say but we started crying and suddenly she really knew that something had just happened and i gave her the news that they found laura s remains. and she couldn t believe it at that time. we all couldn t believe it. but they confirmed that it s her. i know that laura s mother elizabeth has said early on in this investigation she always went to bed with the phone by her side praying that laura would call her to say that she was safe. yes, ma am. that s correct. you know, never in the 16 months she had turned off her phone and that day that we received the news, she immediately turned off her phone and that was just a really sad moment for us at that time. so heartbreaking. i know, nicholas, you and your brother spent almost seven months in new york following the investigation. do you feel that the police have done a good job so far? they have done a good job, great job. i mean we didn t know what to do at that time. i mean we thought it was going to be another case. how many people in new york disappear every day. we thought it was going to be just another case. but unfortunately, the support from the police, the community and they ve done a great job. they told me, you have to believe in us. we re working and we re not going to o stop until we find her. unfortunately, the past week they discovered her and we never gave up and we never stopped thinking that we will find her and they we support the authorities. we believe in them 100%. because if not, what will we do? i don t know what to say. your sister will certainly be remembered as a beautiful young woman, aspiring to be a dancer in new york and greatly loved by her family. thank you all very much for joining us at this terribly difficult time. thank you, meredith. now let s get a check of good morning. i m tom kierein. we have cleared out overnight. now the sunshine is out. temperatu temperatures are chilly, just in the low to mid 50s around the region. winds gusting out of the northwest at 20 to 25 miles an hour. that will be the story the rest of the day. clouds will be developing again later this morning into this afternoon. slight chance for an additional sprinkle. highs low 60 s. should be near 40 by dawn tomorrow, mostly sunny wednesday, cool and blustery. highs in the low to mid 60s. warming up with the diminished wind thursday into friday. don t forget, keep track of your weather all day long, check out the weather channel on cable or weather.com online. meredith? reporter: rock star and celebrity apprentice contestant bret michaels remains in critical condition after suffering a massive brain hemorrhage on thursday. the 47-year-old former lead singer of poison is being treated as an undisclosed hospital. but according to the latest entry on his facebook page, he remains in icu under 24-hour surveillance. further testing this week will help locate the source of the bleeding. on the celebrity apprentice taped several months ago, the rocker-turned-reality show star is competing against other celebrities and has so far won $100,000 for the american diabetes association. michaels was diagnosed with the disease when he was 6. now michaels is fighting for his life. he s definitely had some bad luck over the past year when it comes to his health. he s diabetic but he also had an accident at the tony awards last year where he broke his nose when he was hit. reporter: shortly after that accident, michaels was on today to talk about it. here s the lucky thing. it hit me on my head which was a good thing. i have a thick crane yium. reporter: but last week he was admitted to the hospital complaining of an excruciating headache saying it felt like he was hit in the head several times with a baseball bat. people who have spoken to him say he has slurred speech at the moment but remains upbeat. until they find where the blood is coming from in his brain, we have to just wait and see until we can determine how well he will recover from this. no word yet on when those test results will be completed. natalie, thanks very much. before we talk to donald trump let s bring in nbc s chief medical editor, dr. nancy snyderman. good morning. when we talk about a brain hemorrhage, are we spauking about a stroke in the brain? it is a type of stroke. when you have a stroke you can have a blood clot that blocked off a blood vessel or a blood vessel can burst. in this case it was a burst blood vessel. it is a subarachnoid hemorrhage. there are about 65,000 of these a year. this diagram may not be in the same spot of the brain, but it is very representative. a blood vessel bursts, the very delicate lining of the brain is sensitive. it feels like a thunder clap of the most excruciating pain that someone can describe. typically people will grab their head, fall to the floor and lose consciousness or they ll be able to call 911 and get to the hospital. but it is that leaking of blood around the brain that can hurt the surrounding brain tissue. that s the underlying cause for concern here. do people who suffer this type of hemorrhage tend to recover fully or is that not something that we can even speculate on? it depends on how much blood was lost and where in the brain. if, as natalie reported, this is near the brain stem which controls basic issues like breathing, it could be much more dire. the fact that the doctors haven t spoken and that the family hasn t spoken to me is worrisome. but we really don t know the particulars of this yet. people have been known to walk away. people have been known to die from this. there is a broad spectrum of recovery. nancy, thank for your time this morning. i appreciate it. as we mentioned, bret michaels is one of the contestants on nbc s celebrity apprentice. donald, good morning. the episodes with bret were taped like months ago. couple of months ago. yeah, about two months ago. was he showing any signs of ill health then? none whatsoever. he was in great health. he is really an amazingly competitive guy. i feel a little guilty because i ve been rough on bret. now i m going to be so nice, i ll say, bret, you re doing great. there was a post on his blog that he said about the time he reported these headaches, they said, you need to slow down a bit. was he running himself ragged? he s diabetic and he was working 24 hours a day. it is tough. you know on celebrity apprentic apprentice , it is long hours. this guy was so competitive, working so hard, maybe harder than anyone else. he was doing well. when i first met him i said this guy doesn t have a chance. now he s doing really well. we know he suffers from type 1 diabetes. had you watched him manage that disease over the course of the shooting? actually if you saw last episode he found out his daughter has diabetes. he was crying. but he has serious diabetes. whether that added to it or maybe the hit that he took the tony awards. that was a hell of a hit. i watched that. it was a big hit. it was almost a year ago, people say it s not the same thing. but he took a very, very big hit. we ve got a guy s life hanging in the balance so i don t want to make it sound too super efficient but when i say what impact will this have on the future of the show? we ve never been confronted with anything like this. he s still in the show, doing really well. i can t imagine we have the final and it is going to be live for two hours and it is going to be in four weeks. and i can t imagine he s going to be in the final but knowing bre tech bret, he might be. he s such a good guy, i just hope he makes it. donald, appreciate your input. we ll be back with much more on a tuesday morning right after this. h of the steel? reporter: by the time she was 15, she had caught the eye of filmmaker john hughes. together they went on to make cult classic movies like 16 candles, the breakfast club, and pretty in pink. feel betterfy asked you to the prom? i know prom s kind of lame so if you don t want to go. reporter: over the last 20 years, molly has continued to enjoy professional success but she will forever be treasured as the teen who touched the heart of a generation. molly ringwald, pretty in yellow. good morning to you. i was watching you watch that piece with a smile on your face. what is it like to look back on those old movies? it is so emotional. i haven t seen them in a really long time all the way through. i m waiting to watch all three of them with my daughter, matilda. she s only 6. i was thinking about watching them the other day because a friend of mine has a daughter that s her age. i thought how am i going to explain why i gave my pennies to a geek? i don t think i want to explain that. i ll wait a little while. what was that time like? you were 15 years old when you starred in 16 candled. it was great. i loved the movie, i loved the script. i loved, loved, loved working with john hughes. we had a sort of simpatico relationship. i was really thrilled to be a part of it. i had no idea they would last like they have. they ve become just iconic for so many people. to so many people you always will be 16 in their head because us that the way they see you. of all those characters that you played, were you closer to sort of the shy, vulnerable samantha or more like the most popular kid in school no, i think i was definitely probably the most like samantha from 16 candles. there s elements of me in all of those characters, but i would say that the one that was most like me was samantha. are you still a little shy? yeah, i am. i try to make a point of not being shy but i think in my natural state, i m pretty shy. you bring up a writer/director john hughes who was just a genius. you were his muse. you did those films together. then you decided it was time to try something new. you were offered other roles and you turned them down. your relationship with him was distanced after that. same thing happened to anthony michael hall who played the geeks in those movies. after john hughes died this past summer, you wrote an op-ed piece for the new york times where you said we were like the darling children when they made the decision to live neverland and john was peter pan warning us that if we left we could never come back. true to his word, not only were we unable to return, john went one step further. he did away with neverland itself. why do you think that happened? i think those movies were very personal and he went on after and made wildly successful movies, but they didn t seem to be as personal as the ones that we made with him. so i think that s what i was referring to about neverland. i think once he didn t have us as muses any longer, he kind of just went in a different direction. for me it was a little bit like leaving neverland. did you regret never making any more movies with him? yeah. in a way, i always felt like we would work together again. and that was one of the hard blows of losing him at such a young age. he was far too young to pass away like that. you made your peace with him before he passed away. i know that you sent him a note and he reciprocated, sent you flowers. beautiful flowers. there was the tribute at the oscars with all of the brat pack there. what did that mean to you? it was very emotional. it was a huge honor to be there and sort of represent his work and his family. i was honored they chose to honor him in that way. you re now 40-something, a mother of three, you play a mom the secret life of the american teenager and have now written this book getting the pretty back. yes. why did you want to write the book? well, i was turning 40 and for anyone who s gone through it, it s sore of this angst-ridden time or can be. and i was sort of looking around and i wanted to read something that would kind of offer inspiration and something that was some dour self-help book but something that made me feel good about it. i couldn t find it, so then i decided to write it myself. what have you concluded about being in your 40s and the angst that comes with it? it s not so bad. so far my 40s have been way better than my 30s and my 20s. i feel like i m in better shape now than i was before. i have everything i want. i have a fantastic family and a great career and i m stronger and healthier than i ve ever been. so far, so good. and also, it s oh, there s my family. so i think it is a really good time and i really want the book to really sort of offer that kind of inspiration to other people that are going through that. when you talk about getting the pretty back, you make it clear that pretty is not justing it external, it is a state of mind and women as they get older often tend to lose sight of that and not take care of themselves. it is an amazing thing when you have children and a career, there s always somebody else to take care of instead of taking care of ourselves. i think it is really important. it is important for me to be a good mother to sort of recharge my batteries and really kind of take care of myself. i think there is a lot of that in my book. your mom was a stay-at-home mom, raising kids at home. you made the decision to be a working mom. how do you juggle it all? 9-month-old twins and matilda who is 6. that s a lot. and a husband. yes. yes, it is a lot. i won t lie, i have help. i have a fantastic nanny who lives with us so that really helps a lot. but it is really a day to day thing. my husband is very active in raising our children and every day i just sort of figure out like let s figure out how to get through today and do everything. some days i feel like i get more done than other days, but it is a constant juggling. but i think that s what works for me. other people i think being a stay-at-home mom is great for them, but for me that s what works. it is a personal choice obviously. would you ever envision your kids doing what you did? would you like them to get into show business? no. really. why not? it was so good to you. well, it is a business and it is hard. i feel like you survived but i think if they can stay in school, then sort of decide later on what they want to be, i ll support her in whatever she decides. but i think it is really a decision that she needs to make and i don t really believe kids can make those kind of decisions. how come you didn t fall by the wayside? how come you didn t have the problems so many young actors have? i have a very strong survival instinct. and i have a great family. and i started reading very young, books became very important to me. and i think it is just a combination of things. but mostly i m a survivor i think. now you re a writer. yes. getting the pretty back by molly ringwald. such a pleasure to have you here. i know you ll be back to chat with hoda and kathie lee? today financial editor jean chatzky has some critical advice before you go house hunting. jean, good morning. nice to see you. generally speaking, there is some action out there in the housing market. it s heated up a little. it has heated up, particularly because the first-time home buyer s credit, the $8,000 that s on the table, you have to go to contract by the end of this month in order to capture that. a lot of people are in the market trying to get that money. they re not going to do it if they re casually looking for a home. if you have super lawyer powers, maybe. first thing you need to do if you re about to buy a house, before you make an offer, make sure that your finances are in order. what does that entail? you ve got to pull your credit report and look at actually all three of your credit reports from annualcreditreport.com. make sure your credit score attached to those reports is in good shape. it can mean the difference on a $300,000 mortgage of several hundred dollars a month in monthly payment. you pull your credit report, make sure there are no errors, pull a score and then you go forward. how long does that process take? a day, a week? you can do it in minutes. literally. also creditkarma to get a free score. the important thing also is to get some cash in the bank. the days of being able to buy a house with no money down are over. today they want you to have about 10% as a down payment. at the very minimum. in some cases, if you want to buy distressed properties or if you want to buy a bank-owned property, they re going to look for you to have 20% or 25%. putting cash away is really important. this is probably the biggest purchase you re going to make in your life. so clearly you want to think carefully. so much talk about interest rates rising, prices are fluctuating, is this in your opinion a good time to lock in a 30-year fixed rate interest? absolutely. 30-year fixed rate mortgage right now is about 5.15% for somebody with a good credit score. that is very, very close to the 50-year lows. i know there are some people out there saying, hey, i saw them in the 4s very recently. they are not going back there. they are only going up. we re heading into a rising interest rate environment. and so absolutely, it is a very, very good time to lock in that. however, if you re living in one of the areas of the country where prices of homes are still going down, you ve got a decision to make, how do you weigh rising interest rates with the potentially lowering prices. in other words, if you wait you pay more on your mortgage but if you wait you could get a better price on the house. and it is a real concern. if you look nationally, prices are expected to go down another 5% or so into 20101. you ll make it up on the mortgage as long as you ll be in the house for five years. you ll be able to make up the price the house drops over the next year or so. you ve got your financials in order. now you have to look to where you can find the best deal and the old adage in real estate is location, location, location. right. you have to look locally to figure out if you your community is one of those where prices are on the upswing or prices are going down. go to sites like zillo.com and propertysharks.com. they can tell what you houses are actually selling for. you know the adage just offer 5% to 10% below what they re asking, it doesn t work like that all over. in chicago they re have the bidding wars. either you re going to o get ripped off or you ll overpay unless you do your homework. go locally, figure out what s happening. then how do you decide what s the right offer to make? look at where the prices were listed and what they actually sold for. there is enough information on the internet to actually give you that. and then if you want to look for a real deal, mcmansions are so out of fashion. bigger homes are so out of fashion. the prices on those are coming down, whereas the starter homes which were very attractive to people who wanted that first-time home buyer credit are largely gone. jean chatzky, good information, as always. thanks. still ahead, brooke shields and candace bushnell. after your local news and weather forecast. 8:26 is your time now. return of sunshine after morning clouds. tom will have the forecast after the news. good morning, i m eun yang. in the news today, governor bob mcdonald will announce contractor mcgrubin is moving its headquarters to northern virginia, putting it closer to its customers in the government. the associated press says the new location will be near dulles airport or near crystal city. we ll have your weather and traffic next. good morning. bright sunshine. northwest wind blufrting to 20 miles an hour. 56 in washington. highs today only in the low 60s. lots of sun with a blustery wind. few clouds developing later today. tomorrow more of the same. warming up with a diminished wind thursday and friday. back near 80 by friday afternoon. how is the traffic, jerry? i am at 1 no. 235 pounds. you re doing really well. you look more like the sister than you do the mom. i got to tell you. thank you! your starting weight was 277 pounds. had you to work out at home because you never really made it on to the ranch. yes. i m the only contestant who s never actually made it on to the ranch. doesn t look like it hurt you. how much do you weigh now? 189. wow! from 277. that s fantastic. yes. i have eliminated every excuse any american has because i ve done it all at home. that s great. victoria, some people would say in the last episode it seemed like you weren t pushing that hard. do you think that s a fair statement? you know what? i wouldn t say it was fair. i can not stop to take a drink of water? everybody does. they got me directly. but i pushed and worked hard just like everybody else on the ranch. when i left the ranch, i said i left everything i had there. no regrets at all. do you think doing this with your mom has helped you? do you think you ve gotten farther doing this with your mom than you would have otherwise? there are people listening to with their moms who probably could use to lose some weight. of course. of course. having the accountability tt my mom presented to me, you know, and us having i think only the 22 of us knows what actually goes on at the ranch. to have someone going through that with me definitely helped me to get further in my journey. did you do this in some ways because of your daughter? that was the only reason that i did the biggest loser was because of victoria. one of the most important things for me was having accountability. it makes a difference in whether you re successful or not. victoria and calvin were just absolutely wonderful. well congratulations. great to have you here. thank you so much. good luck to you. watch more of the biggest loser tonight, 8:00, 7:00 central right here on nbc. that s good morning. i m tom kierein. at this hour, we have lots of sunshine and a blustery northwest wind gusting 20 to 25 miles an hour. temperatures in the 50s, only into the low 60s later today. we may have a few clouds developing. still blustery tonight into tomorrow. tomorrow morning, quite chilly. near 40. afternoon highs into the mid 60s with sunshine. thursday, a diminished wind. sunny, high near 70, maybe near 80 friday afternoon. it looks like it will stay summery into the weekend. don t forget, check out your weather any time of the day or night on the weather channel on cable or weather.com online. but you can only check out uncle willie scott right here, right now from ft. meyers, florida. hey, uncle willie. happy anniversary and birthday. let s look at our list today of people who are celebrating from our friends at smucker s. this is big. anna kaufman and viola mae mape sechlt. anna is 105, viola is 104. they went to grade school together. attributes longevity to their great friendship. that s the first we ve ever had of that before. brooksie mccullough, winston-salem, north carolina. nicknamed the mother of her church. makes the best sweet potato pie in the business which melts in your mouth. mike blair, 100 years old, columbia, tennessee. for over 60 years volunteers at the local hospital helping other patients. lois tyrrell, juneau beach, florida. 101. lives independently and her secret to longevity is having cancer but not letting it steal her spirits. how about that? think. there s more than one of them. a whole posse of them. i think they re in cahoots. fy take him out, whole thing falls apart. game over. i just have one question. are you crazy? brooke shields. oh! i ll give the audience a little sneak idea of what that s about. you know the rules, never make movies with animals and kids. you threw caution to the wind. what made you say i want to do it? i don t believe necessarily that having children dictates everything in your life but doing a movie that made them laugh and i knew it was going to, it is such a gift. i mean there are pratfalls and things that happen. my kids laughed outloud and are so proud of their mom. i think it is a great place to be able to get to. there is an ecofriendly message in the movie and you aren t preaching to the kids and they get it. they re empowered by it. it was just i wanted to work with brendan practically my whole life. they enjoyed me in this film. parents also, we took the kids to see the movie and their friends as well. parents are not bored. they love brendan. these actors are unbelievable comics. my kids if they could, they would have me falling off the bed on a loop in the house. you fall off the bed. then that scene right after we cut out of that, that little bunny rabbit ate out of hamburger meat flies into your face, knocks you over. there is another scene where you gobble like a turkey. you look like you re having a blast doing it. to be the wife or girlfriend usually you re just a prop in these movies. you service the story and you highlight the star. in this case, brendan of course is the star but the animals were really the star. and i just any time that i m able to be given anything physically comedic, i jump at the chance. any opportunity to look stupid, i m your man. this movie is packed with animals but they were never actually on the set with you when you were filming. they don t speak. we were really adamant about it not being a talking animal movie. they were doing their own movie, little divas, doing trailers. they were filmed 24/7. they would wait until they would catch a certain action, then we d try to fit it into the scene. there is a big dance sequence at the end and a kind of all the adults have to stay through the credits because there is a bit of a treat for them. but they were filming them, they didn t want to compromise their training so we weren t really allowed to bond with them. you mention your daughters. you ve been happily married for your his since 2001. prior to that you were married to andre agassi. i was. that was me. you write this book, he wrote about your relationship. he said that you gave consent. it was interesting when i realized this month you told britain s easy living magazine that you don t agree with what he wrote, that he made you sit in a room with his ghost writer and read what the writer had written and he wouldn t let you change anything. i mean again, i think it was generous that he gave me the pages that pertain to me but there was really no purpose in doing that. simply because if my memory serves me differently, it didn t matter. but it was easy to say, well, she read it all. again, it s everybody s own it s his memoir. it s his story. it s his reality and he is allowed to tell it the way his heart remembers it. it is his prerogative. there s really you can t refute that. there s no point in doing that. but it can be hurtful. he talks about having doubts on his wedding day, doubts the day he proposed. you told him to act like you re happy at events when really you two wrnteren t. if that s not true it would be hurtful to read. it s not if it s true or not true. how honest were we able to be in our own lives at that time? we served a very important purpose for one another at that time. that s undeniable. i can say that for myself. maybe it s not true for him. so i can only be accountable for where i was and the fear of losing him superseded the complete conviction that i was where i was supposed to be. what is your life like today? oh, wow. i m just really discovering that it s loving and being honest and not being afraid of truth and marriage. as i look at my kids, i m so glad i m still here and i want to be here for longer and i want my kids to know that their mom was a good human being and that i was as pure as i m able to possibly be. now you re back on broadway which is a great thing, cast of love loss and what i wore, an off-broadway show, a collection of stories based on a woman s closet. do you ever look at your life in terms of the outfits you wore in the past? do you ever say i remember the period i wore this flat hat? i have a slightly different relationship with fashion. it wasn t actually until i even lipstick jungle that i thought of myself as a fashion person. all my life i wore jeans, top-siders, lacoste shirts that my mom took out the labels so we weren t status conscience, and put on people s version of me. it was less personal until later years. i look back just in the past ten years or so, and that s when i started to really be able to feel like, oh, i m not just tearing that out of the magazine and i want to look like that, i want to look like myself and what the best of me is. so there are some my favorite outfit ever was my cap and gown, the most unflattering thing you can imagine. i looked like a tent but i wore it because i earned it. that was an important outfit for me. we love having you here, brooke. thank you. thank you so much. furry vengeance opens in . we re back at 8:48. while sex and the city fans anxiously await next month s release of sex and the city 2, they can now sample what carrie was like before cosmopolitan s mr. big and minnow lanolos. candice bush shell has written a series. you always thought you would do a prequel or say wait, everything sex and the city is so popular, there s doa demand, let s go back and set it up. i always had a dream about writing about a young girl that comes to new york. that s my story. i came to new york when i was 19. it s a story i ve been wanting to tell for a long, long time. i thought who better to take on that journey than carrie bradshaw. we know a little bit about what s happened to her. we know how she turns out. it was fascinating to go back in time and lay the little seeds of what would make her carrie bradshaw today. please take this the right way, but neither of us is a high schooler anymore. how hard was it to kind of get back into that time period and write in the voice of the age group? well, the favorite question i ve been asked so far was, some wonderful 25-year-old girl said, now to take it back to the early 80s, did you have to do a lot of research? i said, well actually, sweetie, i was there. i remembered it all. but it took a couple starts, then i just got into the head of the character and i tried to capture the universal feeling of being 17, which i think is something that you can relate to if you are 17, or if you re my age, if you re a fan. carrie at 17. i think of high school, i think of the groups, the cliques. she doesn t seem like she s be in the nerd click. doesn t seem like she d be in the jock click. probably not the stoners, as we used to call them. what kind of high schooler was she according to your book? she was the girl who could move in and out of cliques. cliqueless. cliqueless! she s too cool in a way to be in a click but her friends come from different cliques and in the book she has an encounter with the mean girl and i don t want to say what happens but the fact that carrie she s open-minded about girls and other women and they actually end up kind of becoming friends at the end. that friendship leads her to her some of the characters she meets in new york. do we learn exactly why she moves to new york? this takes place in connecticut. yes, we do. she wants to be a writer and she s working very hard to get on to the next stage of her life. can we talk about fashion? here s this woman who becomes somewhat of a fashion icon in her later years. take us back to the 80s. nobody dressed well in the 80s. the early 80s, vintage. she went vintage? vintage. it was all vintage. not the shoulder pads and things like that? that s a little bit later. that s a little bit later. in high school, it s a lot of vintage, and of course, back then, dolce and gabanna doesn t exist. have you gotten a sneak peek of the book? i haven t but i heard it is great. you want to give me one little more se little morsel that s going on in that movie? you probably know more about that. that s very unlikely. i m waiting. i can t wait. and again, i think like the movies i think mothers and daughters will love carrie dryrys. the book is called the carrie diaries. good luck. can t wait for the next on you. they called you pedestrian, silly. you always smiled through it all. how did you keep such a positive outlook? i think those were their nicer comments. american idol is such an awesome show to be on just to have that opportunity, i just wanted to enjoy it as much as i possibly could. i went up there, performed, gave it my all. had a lot of fun with it. i thought i did good. i was happy with it. and you re going on the tour. exactly. i tried not to take what the judges say too personally. just moved on. what s your immediate future? what happens now after the tour? after the tour? still figuring that out. i d like to go out to l.a. and pursue music and also acting. see what s out there with that. all depends on what happens after the tour what opportunities open up. you ve got nine brothers and sisters. is that like the partridge family there? yeah. are you the only one that can sing sing? no, actually my family s really musical. two of my younger siblings i take that back. all of my younger siblings are musical. one of my younger sisters plays piano and sings, great voice. 8:56 is your time now on this tuesday morning. sunshine is back after some clouds overhead. tom will have your forecast after the news. good morning. i m eun yang. maryland mayor will begin his re-election campaign today. he has two events scheduled in our area. he will attend a barbecue this evening in rockville. o malley will likely face robert uhrlich in november s elections. montreal beat the caps again last night to force a deciding game. washington led the series 3-1 before losing two straight. game seven is tomorrow night at the verizon center. game time is 7:00 pm. we ll take a quick break now. we ll have your weather and traffic when we come back. i m done with all these lists. and driving all over town. i want one list. for one store. we re not answering any questions. reporter: but late monday night, a small victory for the grief-stricken family. monica s remains will likely head back to los angeles today or tomorrow. this remains a case that police say is nearly closed. they say the forensic evidence crosses the ts and dots the i. s. a teenager was trapped inside this car for two days but is now expected to be okay. five minutes past. back outside to matt. thanks very much. mr. roker, going without the good morning. i m tom kierein. live view from our city camera and sky watcher camera, showing a blue sky. off in the distance, a few high clouds are coming n they ll be with us off and on through the afternoon hours. mid and upper 50s. now 59 in washington. highs only the low 60s, though, with clouds coming through. a blustery northwest win as well. wind will be a bit blustery tonight and into tomorrow morning and during the day wednesday. afternoon highs mid 60s tomorrow and sunny. winds diminish and we warm up the end of the week. that s your latest weather. last week the family of ohio mother tiffany tehan launched a nationwide search after she just disappeared. now she s back in her home state but not back with her husband. turns out she ran off with another man and told police she wanted to start a new life. all this was news to her husband though who says he thought that their marriage was doing just fine. could this happen in your marriage? are there any warning signs? jeff gardere is a psychologist and today contributor. r.j. allen, this is a very extreme, drastic case where the mother walks out on her 1-year-old and her husband, off with another man. but, jeff, when you talk about a psychological profile of somebody who could be capable of doing something like that, can you start to put together some pieces? i think we really have to look at that this may be a person who has some issues with depression. there s some emotional state that she s in that would cause her to do something so inappropriate. i mean really, it s common sense, one can simply say this marriage is not working, i d like to file for a separation. but to disappear in that way, disappear with another married person but most importantly, leave your 1-year-old child tells me, thunless this woman i the devil, which she is not, there are some emotional things going on there. you talked about postpartum yesterday. that could have led to it or some clinical depression or some issue where in fact as maybe a child herself there were some things going on with her parents which may have caused her later in life to want to abandon her own child. r.j., i think what needs to be said here is that her husband, he talked about their relationship and said they were doing just fine. the question is was he overlooking some of those signs. natalie, there s always the red flags or neon flashing lights. clearly he said he was blindsided, but my thought is that he wasn t blind-sided. he probably knew, he saw some signs. we call it the pink elephant in the room that you re choosing not to look at because you re telling yourself a very different story than what s really happening in your relationship. he was more than blind-sided, he was blind. the fact is when we see these things in our marriages, it is so easy to not want to acknowledge it because of the potential pain. then it blows up. talk about some of those warning signs. first, stop communicating. when people stop talking in a marriage, they just have nothing to say to one another or they re sitting on what it is that they want to say, that s a sure sign that they re stuck and that there is something that they should be saying but they just don t and it just festers and grows. what are some other signs? not really paying attention, stopping the sex, quite frankly. or it slows down completely. a lot of that happens after you have a newborn in the house. how do you separate what s going on? if the person is not active or not really available in the ways that they used to. or you try to reach them, they went to the grocery store and have been at the grocery store for four hours. those are things you need to pay attention to and sitting down and having conversations. sometimes we see the marriages, it is not that someone disappears but they make themselves unavailable for the four, five, six hours, they re out of touch. it may not be because they re mess egg around or cheating. it could be they re not emotionally connected and they need that time to re-establish their identity but they should be doing that in the marriage. if they re doing that separate from the marriage, it means that they may want to separate from the marriage. constant arguments, anger, a sense of sadness. when they don t resolve those issues and again they just sit there and they just get worse. it is tough to initiate that conversation. that s the one r.j., how do you start saying, do we want the same things in life? listen, you got to talk about it at some point. if you can t talk about it with your partner, talk about it with a confidant and say i need to process something because i need to then have a conversation with my partner. i m not looking forward to it but i know it needs to happen. or just go to couples counseling. it is not about the money, there are universities that will give you interns. you have that third party in the room that can help you connect. we just start living with complacency, denial in our marriages and just think it is going to be okay but it doesn t. then it leads to drastic situations. acting out like this woman. or you re in a more normal sort of marriage, someone getting involved in an affair. that s another way of acting out. jeff gardere and r.j. allen, thank you both so much. still to come yet on today, on track to better health. joy bauer will be here answering your diet questions. and a little bit later on, five basic exercises to get your whole body in shape for summer. but first, these messages. right. good morning. i thought that shrimp was a good food for you because it is low in fat. now i read it has high cholesterol. it is completely fine to eat shrimp. it is true that shrimp does have a decent amount of dietary cholesterol. it is one of the highest foods. but at the same time, it is a super lean protein and it virtually nil of saturated fats and trans fats. what we know from research is that while dietary cholesterol, the type that s in shrimp, does somewhat elevate your blood cholesterol levels, not nearly as much as saturated fat and trans fat. enjoy it. you don t want to fry it up or don t saute it in butter. so people that are watching that ah! well, now, when you say that i m such a buzz kill. what if you ve got high cholesterol and diabetes? i want to mention, if you have that high cholesterol you have to are a little more mindful how often you eat it. no more than once every two weeks. but speak with your personal physician. your numbers may not be that high. some people may have a little bit more leeway and enjoy it more often. caroline, how s your cholesterol level? it is really good. which means you can enjoy shrimp whenever you want but no butter and don t fry it up! okay, thank you. you re welcome. killjoy. now a phone call from francis in arlington, virginia. what s your question? good morning. my question is, i have heard that eating after a certain time in the evening, such as 6:00 p.m., is not good if you re trying to lose weight. is there any truth tho provided you eat a healthy breakfast and lunch and maybe a healthy snack in between lunch and dinner? it is a great question. it is actually not a bad idea to cut yourself off from eating whenever you finish dinner. whether that be 6:00, 7:00, or maybe even 9:00. but not necessarily for the reasons that people think. if your metabolism works 24/7, so it doesn t slow down at night. no. if you stop eating let s say at 6:00, or 11:00, it s really not going to make a difference on the scale as long as your total calories for the day are in check for your weight management goal. the problem with the evening eating is that we destress. it s after work. kids are in bed and we eat on and on and on and on. sit in front of the tv and just keep eating. exactly. it tends to be in and out of the kitchen ten times so it adds up to exorbitant amounts of calories. for that reason it may be a good idea brush, floss your teeth and put a lid on the eating after dinner. but if you do need an evening a snack, keep 150 calories or less. rice cake, or even a fun size candy bar. but even 150 calories or less if you choose to eat in the evening. i think the fun size candy bars are three times as big. that s fun. i m sorry, never mind. our next question, e-mail frommen in anette in kalamazoo, michigan. i m trying to eat healthy and use 20 pounds but i m having a hard time with breakfast. if i eat cereal i m hungry again in an hour. i don t like oatmeal but i need food that s kick or can be made in advance since i m often running out the door. any suggestions? yes. sounds like she would do better with a higher protein breakfast. people love cereal and milk in the morning but that s a moderate protein breakfast. you get a little bit of protein from the milk unless you choose a higher protein cereal. for her she ll feel fuller longer with something, for example like a nonfat greek yogurt which has two times the amount of protein compared to a traditional yogurt with maybe even a small handful of nuts. have an egg mcmuffin sandwich. i realize she s limited in the morning with time, but while that english muffin is toasting, microwave some scrambled eggs, put it together quickly, add a slice of low-fat cheese and out the door. from a frozen are yoburrito. i like the amy s brand. nuke it, right out the door. cottage cheese works. nutrition bar with at least seven grams of protein, no more than two grams of saturated fat. hard boiled eggs, cheese, those are protein-filled breakfasts and are easy to eat on the going. now out to the crowd, a question from roberta from phoenix, arizona. what s your morning? thanks for taking my question. my question is, i have a father-in-law that lives in phoenix suffering from alzheimer s. yesterday on the street i was with a man trying to find his way home. he lived here 50 years. can you tell me what a person should or should not be eating to help prevent or keep me from getting alzheimer s? the first thing i ll tell you is to exer ice. we have compelling research that shows even walking 30 minutes a day can help protect your memory. the next thing, believe it or not, drink coffee. research has shown that regular coffee and the more, the better helps to reduce your risk for dementia and alzheimer s as well. berries are wonderful, potent antioxidants that protect the brain. lastly, dark green leafy vegetables because they have folic acid. that s a great question. thank you for asking it. joy bauer, thanks so much. coming up, from 80s darling to working mom and author, molly ringwald tells us about getting the beauty back. but first, these messages. just to get out of bed. then. well. i have to keep winding myself up to deal with the sadness, the loss of interest, the trouble concentrating, the lack of energy. if depression is taking so much out of you, ask your doctor about pristiq. the answer was yes. 9 million cases of identity theft every single year. the people who are most subject to it are women because we do 85% of the shopping. in your article you write women are 26% more likely than men to be victims and people ages 45 to 54 represent 31% of all identity theft victims. right. we re busy at work, we go home, shopping late at night. we just have to be careful how much we are putting out there. what about this antivirus software? it protects us to some degree but it is not enough. we need antispy wear protection, we need antiphishing tool bars, we need fire walls. you can download them for free from c-net, buy a package from norton. but when you get them you have to use them. we found a lot of the people who actually have fire walls haven t enables those fire walls. make sure, go into the security portion of your computer, make sure you have all these things activated. i guess should this make us rethink what we use the internet for? it should make us rethink how we use different things. look, first we have to protect our computer. then we have to protect our own little wireless network in our home. if you have a wireless network, somebody else could hop on to that and start stealing your information. make sure again you protect that with wpa protocol. wpa and wpa-2. they re both good. you want a password for your wireless network that s at least ten characters long and mixes up letters and numbers. then if you go outside your house and you do, as i do sometimes, take your laptop and go to a coffee shop because you want to get some work done there, you ve got to make sure you re not doing all the different things you would do at home. it is not a good idea to bank when you re in a starbucks. it is not a good idea to buy things when are you in a starbucks because there could be hackers sitting there and getting on your little network. my goodness, you re the first person i ve ever heard say that. it is absolutely true. i see people all the time in airports. airports are another place. they use software i learned this whole new language preparing for this article. they use packet-sniffing software that they actually get into your little area and they can actually pull out your information. very, very dangerous. and don t they need to have your excuse me. your point. if. no, go ahead. don t they need your password? that is the point i was going to make. if you re on facebook or the internet, you re putting a lot of information out there in social networking sites. people can guess your password. if you re on facebook and you say my first dog s name was snoopy, hello, chance is good that password will also be snoopy or people share their birthdays. hackers are very clever people. they can take that birthday and use it to talk to your bank and get in to your different accounts. so be very careful who you share your facebook information with and what you put out there to begin with. even photographs can get you into trouble. yes! in a way that people might not expect. we read of one case, a canadian woman who was on disability. she was receiving disability payments. she put vacation photos on her facebook page. the disability carrier looked at those photos and said you don t look disabled to me and cut her off. we have to be very, very careful. you also say that we shouldn t save our if we have a lot of passwords these days. we shouldn t save them in our computer. you shouldn t save them necessarily in your computer and also, when you go to a site and do some shopping, it will ask do you want knee hold on to your credit card number? say no. it s not necessarily that it s going to get stolen, but a lot of identity theft is actually perpetrated by friends and family, people who may know you and may have access to your computers. just like storing the information, they can shop from your machine and actually do some damage to your credit rating. now, i m alarmed. jean chatzky, you ve given us some great information that involves more work and time but they could save us a lot of money. thank you so much. sure. coming up next, how to get into shape in the right way after in 20 minutes a day. that s all after this. but five minutes ago, i took symbicort, and symbicort is already helping significantly improve my lung function. so, today, i ve noticed a significant difference in my breathing. and i m doing more of what i want to do. so we re clear it doesn t replace a rescue inhaler for sudden symptoms. my doctor said symbicort is for copd, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. it should not be taken more than twice a day. symbicort may increase your risk of lung infections, osteoporosis, and some eye problems. tell your doctor if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure before taking it. my copd often meant i had to wait to do what i wanted to do. now i take symbicort, and it s significantly improves my lung function, starting within five minutes. symbicort has made a significant difference in my breathing. now more of my want-tos are can-dos. as your doctor about symbicort today. i got my first prescription free. call or go online to learn more. how much should you pay attention to what you are eating versus exercise? 80% diet. that s why i focus on the diet portion of the book. there are a few foods that you can factor in to your diet that will really balance those hormones. look, america s estrogen dominant because of processed foods, chemicals that we have in our foods. estrogen dominant. i introduce those very clear foods that will help balance that. the only diet that actually adds food instead of taking it away. for the first two weeks i add food to your existing diet. eat all the junk you want but here are foods you need to introduce to start losing weeks and it works. lean protein? two fruits a day, three vegetables a day. water with lemon juice is very important every day. also oatmeal and two eggs with lecithin. you can burn 100 calories a day by drinking three liters of water with that lemon juice. when it comes to exercise, you say less is actually more. you say you can see results in actually 20 minutes a day. really? exactly. everything that i do is called power circuit training. it s very key to getting intensity, that high-intensity training is key. that s what we ll talk about a little bit today, high-intensity training. it takes 20 minutes. you can plug into anything, treadmill, elliptical, going outdoors and take a walk, any of that. you re a big believer in weights. a lot of women i think when it comes to weights are a little intimidated. you get the typical stereotype of the jarheads at the gym working out but women should be doing weights. you ll demonstrate for us, rebecca will show us a front squat, dumbbell front squat. it is done incorrectly at first. you ll show us the right wra to make this move most effective. you see how she bends over and kind of loses that arch in her back. now she a bending in the back instead of the knees. it is all over the knees. let s see how she does it the correct way here. now she s got a nice arch in her back, her knees are over the ankles and not the toes. she keeps that nice arch all the way through the movement. her body s not going over her knees. that s right. she s not collapsing. she s staying more erect. why is it important to have the right posture when it comes to a move like that. first, you want to work the right muscles. you re not working the quad and glute and hamstring when you do that squat.putting stress on th back which can hurt the back and you aren t getting that great primary muscle workout. the great dumbbell lunge. i think i do it that way. let s look. first she s bending completely over that knee. she needs to be sitting very tall. you see the knee again is over the toe. very bad. her front is completely collapsing over the top. let s see her do it the right way now. there she s much more erect. she s in a complete straight line. knee is right over the toe. switching legs here or stay with one leg and move to the other? it looks like she s alternating no, she s staying on one leg. next the bicep curl, arm exercises here. you say when people do this, they do that. they swing their arms and awful lot. let s look at her elbows. they should be pinned in the front. they re swinging all over the place. now she s perfectly doing this bicep curl. she s got her elbows pinned to the side, no swing whatsoever. well, we get the idea there. couldn t get to all of them but the book again is called this is why you re fat and how to get thin forever. jackie warner, thanks so much. back with the last round of today s top dog semi-finalists. but first, this i m lucy sykes. i m a fashion stylist. what i do is dress people for magazines and tv. my job is to hunt down the best fashion and stay on budget. my secret?
