captions paid for by nbc-universal television and welcome to today on this thursday morning. i m meredith vieira. i m matt lauer. one official at british petroleum says he believes what we re seeing coming out of the leaking oil well in the gulf is mud, no longer oil and gas. it s brown in color, much different than what we saw before the top kill began wednesday afternoon. we want to give you a side-by-side view of the underwater camera. on the left, the live view of what looks like mud coming out. and on the right, oil spewing at the leak before the top kill procedure. it doesn t look all that different to me? looks like more light on the one on the left. but hopefully a good sign. hopefully. and if all goes well, the well could be cemented shut by this weekend. we ll talk to a bp executive about it all in a moment. sarah duchess of york is out and about. we ll see what she s saying about the royal scandal. and the 12-year-old girl we introduced you to on wednesday who called 911 from under her bed covers as a burglar entered her room. the top kill method has been under way for 17 hours now hoping to plug that devastating oil leak. is it working? ann thompson is on the gulf coast with more. good morning, ann. good morning, meredith. bp officials say the top kill procedure is going as planned. this as president obama prepares to announce new restrictions on offshore drilling. a white house official tells nbc news that the president will extend the moratorium on deep water offshore drilling for another six months. said he ll cancel exploratory drilling in the arctic, and that he will delay drilling in virginia and the western gulf, all because of this crisis. the spill site is a sea of oily sea. but a mile below is where the action is. thousands of gallons of heavy drilling mud being pumped through the blowout maneuver and the gushing well in a maneuver called top kill, broadcast live around the world on the web. what you ve been observing on the top of the riser is most likely mud. we can t fully confirm that because we can t safrpmple it. we ll know it s successful when we monitor the well and recognize it s not flowing. in washington, another kind. the blame game is in full force right now. reporter: congressmen pointed fingers at bp and the white house. it is clear that the federal government has not taken the lead from day one. reporter: the obama administration insists it s doing everything we can. we are holding bp accountable and that accountability effort that we have under way, we have them by the neck. reporter: but still, the oil flows. some 100 miles of louisiana s coast are now touched by crude, most of it wetlands, home to 400 species of wild life. the problem is once this oil gets into the marshes, it s almost impossible to get out. it is to this environment that president obama will travel to friday where booms can t hold back the oil, and pelicans struggle to survive. louisiana governor bobby jindal touring oil-soaked patraluta at the mouth of the mississippi has a message. i don t know how many feet they can fit, but as many as they can. i want them to have more authorization for skimmers and the implementation where every local leader has got a successful coast guard official with decision-making authority. reporter: but most of all, governor jindal wants president obama to give him the authority to build a new series of barrier islands to protect louisiana s coast. now, we could know as early as today if the top kill procedure has worked. and there s a related health development this morning, meredith. seven fishermen overnight were treated for nausea, seven fishermen working out in the spill zone. as a result, bp called in all of the commercial fishing vessels working out in the sound as a precaution. meredith? ann thompson, thank you very much. bob dudley is bp s managing director, good morning to you. good morning, meredith. officials at bp say it would take 24 hours to gauge this top kill process. we re about 17 hours in. can you give us an update on how things are going. that s right, the teams, meredith, have worked through the night. we re pressuring and pumping up into the well. this operation would take between a half a day and 24 hours. it will take us 24 hours from now before we can be sure of success. the operation continues. too early to draw conclusions from it. it s moving the way we wanted to, but still too early to say. too early to say that you are cautiously optimistic at this point? oh. it is too early to say. it s an arm wrestling match between two equal forces, the well and the pressures flowing into it and trying to drive the fluids back in. it s what we expected, it s as difficult as we expected. we ll know more later today and tomorrow. your company ceo said wednesday what we re seeing coming out of the well right now he believes is probably mud, not gas or oil. what is he basing that on? well, you can see that the characteristics of that plume are are water-based mud that dissolves quicker and nontoxic and dissolves quicker in the water. and that s what s coming out of the top of that well at the moment. we know that because that s where we re pumping in to the well and we see that. during this process, there will be times where there will be no flow. there may be oil and gas, or there may be mud, but at this point, it s too early to say. and it would be it wouldn t be reasonable for anybody to draw a conclusion from that until we ve killed the well for good. so he s not basing it on the color. because if you look at what s coming out right now, seems to be brown in color, not black the way the oil was, or white the way the gas was? that s right. that s what you would expect from the heavy muds that we re putting in. there was also a concern, mr. dudley, that the pipe that s being used obviously the mud is going through the pipe, it might not be able to handle the pressure of the mud, and it could spring a leak making more problems for you. is that your concern? it s part of the procedure that we re doing is making sure that we don t go near the pressure barriers that would cause something like that to happen. and that is why this is a longer process. it s not something that we can go in and bang the pressure in there because just for the very risk that you mentioned. it s very systematic and it will take time. even if the first part of this process works, then you have to pump in e cement. you ve never done it at levels so deep. so there s no reason to know that that would work. one we get the well stabilize, the next part of the process would be cementing that well. and we are in place to be able to do that. and i think that s a lower risk part of this process. bob dudley, managing director of bp, thank you so much for your time this morning. thank you, meredith. now let s get a little independent analysis from ed overton, a professor emeritus in louisiana, good morning to you. good morning, meredith. you just heard mr. dudley. based on what you are seeing, do you agree with him? generally, yes. i it s way too early to tell. it s clear they re successfully pumping mud in to the mix. and it looks to me like the amount of oil coming out of the geiser is considerably less. i mean, clearly oil is a blackish material and it changed significant colors. so i think the first step has been has been a success. if we can if they can slow the flow down, now, in the flow of oil and get enough time in there to pump in the cement. that s going to be the big issue. still got a long way to go. but so far, so good, i think. if all goes as planned, can you describe to me how the process will proceed today? well, i think, you know, i m not part of the engineering team. i m looking from the sideline like everybody else. but if i were doing it, i think i would try to increase the density of the mud slowly so that you don t get any pressure, the flow of mud should slow down. they re going to slowly increase the density of the mud flowing in. slow the flow coming out both up and down. and eventually when it gets so slow it stops, they can start pumping in the cement which will be a seal that will hold it until the relief well puts the final seal in the well. but as we just said to mr. dudley, they ve never attempted to put cement down at this depth. what are the problems to present themselves? i m not a petroleum engineer. so i m just imagining. but the cement the difference between cement and mud is cement has a time before it solidifies. you have to pump it down a long way, go to the pipe, then turns to the solid. the mud doesn t turn to a solid, it stays a liquid. i can understand this is very difficult. my hat s off to them. they ve got some of the best engineers in the world working on this. and we re all hoping and praying that it s successful. we need to get the well stopped right now. later on the oceanic administration is going to release the forecast for the hurricane season. given all the oil that s in the gulf right now, if a hurricane were to come through there, what kind of damage could we be talking about? environmental damage? that s a pretty speculative subject. i m off the norm in that. my understanding that oil concentrating oil is bad wherever it is, on the surface or on the marsh. a hurricane puts lots of energy in the environment and you ll spread the amount of oil over a very large area. and mother nature can handle a little bit of oil if it s not too high a concentration. so i m of the thought that if a hurricane would be beneficial if it is spread over a large area. a lot of people disagree with that. and, of course, i i suspect we will get a chance to find out. but concentrated oil is bad wherever it is. the diluted oil, not nearly as bad up it will go further inland. but a little bit of oil that you can barely see inland is not going to cause the problems that a concentrated oil right out near the boundary for the open ocean. that s a really bad situation. ed overton, thank you so much for your perspective this morning. thank you. let us get a check of the top stories from ann in the newsdesk. good morning to you. matt, meredith, good morning. there appears to be no backing down on the crisis of the korean peninsula. south korea held major naval maneuvers after accusing the north of sinking one of its ships. and the forces in south korea renewed the pledge for support. this is after the north said it s scrapping to try to prevent accidental military clashes. the commander of afghanistan s border police said a clash near pakistan killed a top leader of pakistan s taliban and ten of the operatives. u.s. officials have linked the pakistan taliban to the failed car bombing in time square. the house is expected to vote as early as today to prevent the don t ask don t tell law. as part of the unfinished business before the holiday break, the house may vote on a bill that would extend unemployment benefits due to expire next week for another six months. world markets are higher overnight. melissa lee is at the stock exchange. what s caused this upswing? good news to investors here and the united states as well. china overnight denying reports that it s pulling back on purchases or selling european bonds saying europe remains the key investment zone for the foreign exchange currenciecurre. china is one of the big epps holders of the european bonds. the fear is china would step away from the markets at exactly the time europe needs to sell those bonds in order to finance all those bailouts, ann. thank you so much this morning. baby-boomers have lost a member of their television family. art linkletter died after a lifetime of helping us realize kids say the darnedest thing. what do grown-ups do for fun? they go out to dinner and the pta meeting and get drunk. he was 97 years old. that s how much fun googling him was. i miss those pta meetings. it s a bummer when the kids grow up. doesn t really seem like that. anyhow let s get a check of the weather from mr. roquer? well, we ve got a big at this hour it s hazy sunshine and a live view looking towards the west. we have temperatures climbing into the low 70s and 60s in the rural areas and highs near 90 with inyeesing clouds and the front will come through triggering trapsñi strong storm some of which account produce damaging winds and hail and downpours that could cause flooding. cooler tomorrow and we dry out starting the weekend and that s your latest weather. matt? okay, al, thank you very much. there are new warnings about the popular herbal supplements. if you take them, some advice on what you should do from nancy snyderman in a moment. but first, kelly o donnell on what the government investigation has found. good morning to you. good morning, matt. will that pill help you lower your cholesterol or help a diabetic stop taking insulin. echinacea, ginkgo by low bah, st. john s wart. the government wants to know if you re being told the truth about what they can do. reporter: there s a pill for just about everything. and who wouldn t want to feel better and look younger. but if you take herbal supplement, here s a big dose of caution. aggressive marketers are providing consumers with unsubstantiated claims that their products can treat incurable disease. government investigators checked out 22 stores and 30 websites and told congress what they found. and you ll be amazed to know that this product, according to its marketing materials prevents and cures cancer. as an added bonus, it prevents the common cold, obesity, and diabetes. investigators posed as customers and recorded the sales pitch. it aids brain function, sharpens mental focus. it improves your memory. so that also helps in alzheimer s in that. it does, it prevents it and if someone s already at that stage, this might gradually reverse it. and also heard supplements can replace prescription medication. you really can correct any health condition, i believe. i mean, i was on five prescriptions over six years ago and i ve been off of everything. but it s illegal to make any claims that an herbal supplement can prevent or treat disease unless specifically approved by the fda. the industry trade association told congress most retailers do act responsibly. we denounce false, misleading, or decreptive marketing practices. undercover customers were given dangerous advice about mixing medication. here the supplement is ginko biloba. if i m on medication, aspirin, sometimes tylenol, anything? yeah, yeah, it s completely safe. it s all natural, it s a herb. according to the fda, combining ginko with aspirin can increase the risk of bleeding. reporter: and they did a study of the contamination they suspected was in some of these. they checked out 40 supplements, in 37, there were trace levels of harmful substances from lead to pesticides. levels lower than the law allowed. they don t think there s an immediate harm. the question is, when people take supplements, how much do they take and for how long? matt? kelly o donnell on capitol hill. dr. nancy snyderman is the chief medical editor. good morning to you. hi, matt. when it comes to heavy metals and pesticides, if i m buying the stuff to get healthy, i don t care if it s trace, i don t want any of that. the trace amounts are fine even though we don t want it in the body. some of the pesticide residue was higher than allowed. we get it from plants, plants are sprayed. for a consumer, give me a better source for your medication, i don t want any pesticides in it. when it comes to the false claims, i m not shocked they re making false claims marketing. but will they go on the phone calls that we heard. congress has dirty hands in this. in 1994, congress created a place for these to live as food supplements and not as drugs. so their bar is a lot lower. they don t have to prove the same thing that a prescription drug would. and i think that s a huge loophole. and we re paying the price. i worry about the patient that s desperate for some sort of answers who may have something like cancer and takes some of these supplements when they should be getting other kinds of treatment. they do that. they don t think of them as medication. don t report them, there are drug interactions. a lot of these there wasn t enough active ingredient to work. in some, it s too much. if you put it in your mouth, it s a medicine. a place to go, a website to become more educated. fda.gov is a place to start. then do your homework. but don t take these blinds. thank you very much. here s meredith. the duchess of york sarah ferguson has been making the rounds in the u.s. selling her children s books days after she was caught trying to sell access to her ex-husband, prince andrew. good morning to you. fergie s life has been anything but a fairy tale lately. but rather than run away from the scandal, fergie is again plowing ahead with her commitment. two more in new york city alone. she s having some fun at her own expense. reporter: turning the page meant turning up at this new york city book signing event on wednesday night. but, again, no comments about the scandal that s rattled britain s royals. amidst the swirling headlines, the disgraced duchess of york was at a book event. it was difficult for me to get here this morning. one or two people in the way. but then you might have read that. fergie wasted no time poking fun at herself and the scandal. as you all know, i really don t like grown-ups. i do prefer children. the 50-year-old is promoting the line of children s books, helping hand, they re called, for a woman these days could use one. pounds to open doors. this week s stunning new video caught fergie caught on tape helping to sell an undercover reporter access to her ex-husband, prince andrew, britain s chief trade envoy for money. fergie never addressed the scandal directly but talked about the books. one of the books is ashley learns about strangers. or matthew and the bullies. . reporter: she s showing up, fulfilling her commitments, even signing hundreds of her books for fans. scandal or not, we ll take an autograph and we ll celebrate the fact she wrote some children s books and that s cool. she s here to with her book and being generous to other authors. it s terrific. what s next for the duchess and her daughters? i m in my room. okay, okay. don t talk so loud, okay. mckenzie said she really freaked when one of the intruders entered her room. she said he knew she was there. i could feel them staring a guy one of them staring right at me. 911 dispatcher michelle barrett summoned officers while working to keep mckenzie to calm down. he s inside the room. he s in your room. just don t talk to me. don t talk. okay, take deep breaths, okay? think of something really fun, okay. try not to cry, okay, i know it s hard. don t say anything now, mackenzie, just tell me when he leaves. she did exactly what she should do, it was great. fortunately, a police car was in the neighborhood and they nabbed intruders who tried to run when they heard sirens. mackenzie got the all clear from the dispatcher. you ve got me here with you. you re doing a really good job. you re super, super brave. okay, mackenzie, the officer is at the front door, and he says you can come out to the front if you can. okay. now both mackenzie and the 911 dispatcher are being hailed as heros. for today, george lewis, nbc news, los angeles. that s wild stuff. 12-year-old mackenzie hughes is with her mom, tracy ferguson as well. michelle barry, the 911 trainee who answered her call. and kelly martinez is helping to train michelle for the last few months, good morning, nice to see you. good morning. mackenzie, we re all parents around here and we gasped when we saw that tape. because we could only imagine how our children would have handled that situation. what s it like for you to will be listen to that tape and hear your voice on there? it makes me it kind of makes me sad. like sometimes i want to cry when i hear it. how long did this whole thing last, mackenzie? how long was that intruder in the room with you while you were on the phone to rochelle? it sounded like he was in my room half of the time when i was underneath my blanket. so was it like a minute, two minutes? how long did it last? i think about two minutes? that s way too long. i understand you ve been getting a lot of text messages and e-mails from friends telling you you were awfully brave in this ordeal? yes. i have. a lot. tracy, you and your husband are both drivers. you drive city buses. and i understand you started to get word that an incident was occurring or had occurred at your house. it s every parent s nightmare. tell me about your reaction? well, mackenzie is only home for like 30 minutes a day. so i i felt comfortable with that. and when i got a call saying there s a situation at our house, that she they said she was home while the house was being burglarized, i just i said i got to get people off this bus and i got to get back. i just got to go. that was my first instinct just to turn this thing around and get to her. and, michelle, you re a trainee at 911. and i have to tell you, listening to this tape, i just marvel at how well you did at handling this call, everything from telling mackenzie where to try to hide to telling her to think of fun things. had you ever in your two months of training anything nearly this intense before? no. no. i mean, you get a wide variety of calls every day, but nothing that that touched me quite like mackenzie did. you re a mom too, aren t you? yes. and so you had to be thinking what your own child would have been going through in a similar circumstance? yes, absolutely. i have a 16-year-old daughter, just not much older than mackenzie. so it hit home for sure. kelly, i mean did your trainee do everything the way she was supposed to do it? yes, she did. she listened to me well. what was it like she did a good job. what was it look to be there as this played out? it felt good. she did most a lot of it on her own and a lot of it i just threw suggestions at her to help keep mackenzie calm so she wouldn t lose it with that guy in her room. mackenzie, i know it was really important for you to meet the woman who talked you through this. what was it like to see her fail-to-face? it was it was really nice. i felt really what to say about it. most importantly, this ended this ended well and mackenzie, you did a great job. you did a terrific job. we re happy everybody s okay. thank you for joining us this morning. thank you. thank you. thank you. let s get a feels like a midsummer morning in late may. hazy sunshine and temperatures in the 70s and it s humid. 73 in washington and fewer locations in the 60s. it will warm into the 80s or 90 with increasing clouds. a likelihood of thunderstorms developing late this afternoon into this evening. some storms could produce winds, hail, and flooding rain. passing showers perhaps and maybe drizzle and cooler, but drying out into the weekend. where are you guys from? they re from maine. and maine or any of the other state, go to weather.com on-line. matt. thank you very much. coming up, jessica and cody got hitched live here on today. this morning, they ll get a home makeover surprise. but up next, one family holds out hope for a daughter missing halfway around the world. that story after this. she went halfway around the world looking for fun and adventure, now a girl from colorado is missing in depaul. her family is spearheading a massive search and rescue effort. aubrey graduated last year from the university of colorado and headed to southeast asia in december. her family says the cheerful 23-year-old had been loving every minute of her journey, studying yoga and meditation, taking photos, and greeting strangers with an open heart. she s a free spirit. she s an artist, she s a yogi. she s the strongest person i ve ever known. her travels took her to nepal, trekking in the himalayas. she was supposed to contact her parents on april 29 after a planned ten-day hike through the park. she never made the call. it s every parent s nightmare but she s determined to stay strong and not give up hope. she s my best friend in the world. she knows that. and i know she knows that we re, you know, trying to find her. a massive search effort is under way with expertise and resources coming from the nepalese government and private tour guide crew. the best way to find my daughter is to send those people out on the trail to look for her. and even though we have people her, some good people, it doesn t hurt, you know, to have numbers. it s a big place. aubrey s father, paul, is there now as well. he s vowed not to come home without her. she registered at two locations along the popular hiking route. but that s where her trail ends. her family and the u.s. embassy is hoping to meet a traveling companion she may have met along the way. but so far, has come up empty. i feel she s just lost. she s just gotten off of the trail. and my gut is that she s waiting for her father to come and get her. reporter: a young woman s search for adventure, now her family s heart ache as they wait and search for any sign of her in the mountains of me naihe pal. nbc news, greeley, colorado. and still ahead, encouraging news in the fight against ms. but up next, what you see when you go to google today. and why it will put a smile on your face. right after this. . if you do a google search today, you ll see something special. the logo was designed by the annual doodle for google contest. she s here be chief google doodler, michael lopez. good morning to both of you. good morning. congratulations. thank you. was it cool to log on and see your doogle up there for the whole world to witness? if i could do anything, i would help save the rain forest. have you always cared about the environment? yes. did you i know you re a perfectionist. it took you four times to get the doodle exactly the way you wanted it? it took four different times. what was the hardest thing about it? probably drawing the background. michael, you clearly like this. i love it. what made this stand out from the other finalists? i think that it represents exactly what the doodles are. they re fun and they re representative of her theme. and it was really colorful and an amazing piece of artwork, i think we all agreed. all the doodlers agreed this would be the winner. this is how long now? up for a day. google.com. obviously along with the other finalists at the design museum here in new york as well. what s next for you. did you like his job? yes. because i think you could get it. do you want to be an artist? when you saw this space, what was the first thing you said needed to get done? all right, well, meredith, here i mean, here s the deal. they re like the youngest, most adorable couple in the world. i was like, wait, are you guys 8 years old. you re married? so i wanted there to be like a young cool color in this room. and so that s why i painted the room turquoise because i thought that s something that s young, that s hip. it s interesting. it would be great for them to wake up in every morning. that s a bold this bed, actually you know, go bold. if you re watching this at home, take a risk, i think. you guys like it? we love it. we love bold colors. you know, go bold. i always say go bold. that s where you can really take a risk. and the bed was actually your grandfather s. my grandfather s. grandfather or great grandfather. it was my grandfather s. he slept in it when he was a little boy. i added this canopy to make it more important. and wood floors as well. it part of the process. check it out. is gorgeous. cool night stand. can i interrupt you? why did you decide to get rid of that carpet and go with the floors? the wood floors? i wanted a lot of new holmes, meredith. there s not a lot of architecture in the space. so i thought the wood floors would add a lot of texture and a sense of history in here. this is a bedroom/office as we said before. let s go over to the office area. i know when yeah, let s go to this side. yes, to that side of the room. one of the issues for you, nate. this is now the office. was the flow of this this office and bedroom wasn t working for you. so how did you make it work? yeah, meredith, the thing with that is i don t believe in being in bed staring at your computer. so what this room looked like before was actually very cute. but cody had put two desks two tables on this far wall. and there were both of their computers on this wall. i wanted the space to flow better from the bedroom. so i put a fixture hanging low with the center table. and now when you re in that side of the room in the bedroom part and you look this direction, it just looks like a beautiful space. it doesn t look like a place where you re laying in bed and thinking about the work that maybe you re supposed to be doing. so i wanted it to be a bit more peaceful. that s why i divided it this way. i tucked the workstations on both sides with some custom cabinetry. it just looks so much bigger in here. it does. and what s on the walls in that space, nate? what what am i looking at on those walls? this is highly textured wall covering from lows, actually. it s like a spot wall covering. gorgeous. into it. definitely loving it. it has a lot of texture. the colors are beautiful. now cody and jessica, you ve seen it, what are your thoughts? i know you re loving. it but could you imagine this is what this room could potentially look like? no, i could never imagine this sort of layout we have going on in the office space. i don t know if you can see it at home, it s so personal. there s so many beautiful pictures. i can t stop looking around. all the memorabilia on the yeah. amazing that you incorporate that in here. i can t thank you enough for that. you re so welcome. enjoyed it. we ve got family photos, we ve got we ve got family pho photos, wedding invitation, books that have meaning. cody is an architecture student. vintage architecture books in here. i noticed that. really cool stuff. fantastic sfas. before we let you go, congratulations on your new show launching september 13, right, on our nbc stations? twice a day, in the morning, 12 hours later, in the evening. every day you take it? every day. the pill and so many are shocked. yeah, exactly. but you ve been alyssa s doctor since 2002. how would you categorize her response to this therapy? i think alyssa is really a super responder. and this is a drug where where individual results vary. and unfortunately not everyone responds to the drug. in the studies, a typical response in people that did improve was about a 25% increase in walking speed, but it wasn t just that patients could walk faster, they could walk further. they were less dependent on support when walking. easier getting up and down the stairs, they could do more things when walking, when standing. it s made their lives a lot a lot easier. my husband, richard, who has secondary progressive as well. he went on the drug, it did nothing. to your point we do see that sometimes. you can see the variability here. alyssa was a super responder, and unfortunately richard was not. yeah. it s still considered a breakthrough drug. breakthrough because it targeted for walking. it s taken orally. for a lot of people, the results are good, like alyssa here are remarkably good. except for seizures in people who frankly take too much of the medication, it s well tolerated. something about the kidneys as well. kidney problems, rashes, stomach upset, dizziness. the normal symptoms the fda knows you re on it. and drugs can t cause kidney problems, just people who have severe problems with the kidneys shouldn t take it. and the ms drug improves it conditions. the others kept the condition from getting worse. no cure. so we re talking about making things better or reversal of some of the symptoms. if you can take being able to stand on your own or walk or balance, and if you can take that narrow issue and make it better. yeah. that s a huge breakthrough. do we have any idea how this drug works? why it works? well, we think we do. in the people who have ms, the damage to nerve fibers impairs it transmission of signals to and from the brain. and that results in a variety of symptoms with difficulty walking. and we think the medication restores it signals and improves function in some people. costwise? $1,000 a month, wholesale. it would be more. co-pay, if you have insurance should kick in. and the company has assured us they will be robust in helping people spend no more than $40 a month out of pocket. they are really in this. one of the biggest things. what we re looking at is targeted therapy, it s opening up the door to narrow the niche drugs that work well for patients, maybe not so well for others and marching forward and attacking the problems that are specific to this kind of disease. and also secondary progressive in alyssa s age. rellamas, remit, those patients would be candidates? all forms of the disease potentially will respond to it. thank you so much. thank you. so wonderful. thank you so much. up next, a great space, a [ male announcer ] progress. progress is saving tax payers millions of dollars, with the help of visa digital currency. which lets troy reiners, manager of nebraska s child support payment center, put money into pre-paid visa accounts for just a penny. instead of mailing out checks for 59 cents each. now that s progress. visa. currency of progress. this morning on today s kitchen, going back to basics. brush off your grill and get ready for a memorial day barbecue. the author of steak with friends and he s here to share some of his favorite steak recipes. you like hangar steak, so do i. i love it. why do you like so it much? five or six hours is plenty. you don t need to do it long. can you put it in the refrigerator and the marinade overnight? absolutely. you put it on the grill. a couple of things to mention right off of the bat never put your fork or your knife in to the meat to check the temperature. all that juice comes out. i like a hot grill, well oiled. and i don t like to mess with it. guys like to turn it, play with it. put it on, let it cook, let it caramelize, leave it alone, let it again done. you butterflied it here. you re talking about an inch thick, how long would you cook it? al, thanks. this morning on today s daily dose, the truth about your eyes. you were warned by your mom, but is it a myth or a fact that sitting too close to the tv can ruin your eyes. according to the survey, americans have misconceptions when it comes to eye care. here to help us see it clearly is dr. nancy snyderman. threer if, today. a girl s got to make a living. nice to have a job. how often should you be having your eyes check? for most of us, it s a simple annual checkup. but certainly by the age of 35, 40, by the time you start to know your eyes can change, absolutely get them check. your kids struggling in school, hearing and vision, should be the easiest thing in the world to make sure your kids are okay. let s talk about the myths. number one it s one that parents bug kids about. is it a fact that sitting too close to a computer or computer screen, especially these days that it can harm your eyes. no, there s no proof. it can cause eyestrains and headaches but it won t hurt your vision at all. there s a 20/20/20 rule. every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away and for 20 seconds just so your eyes aren t constantly looking here and they have to adjust. why? are they a musle? there s a lot of muscles around your eyeballs and it takes the strain out. you probably have had some kind of headaches around your eyes. a lot of times it s eyestrain but it won t change your vision. meantime, a lot of people say reading in dim light will not ruin your eyesight. it won t. that s a same thing as computer. one of the great old wives s tales that our mothers have said, you re going to ruin your eyes, you re going to ruin your eyes. not true. eyestrain. the next one is timely. people are outdoors because of sun exposure. is it a myth or phat that wearing sun block can help prevent blindness. huge, huge fact. this is big. your eyes are sensitive to uva and uvb rays. when you go shopping for your sunglasses, style matters but filtering the damaging rays matter just as much. we know those rays can lead to cataracts later in life. so if you want to put on blindness you want to put off cataract surgery, put on good glasses and on cloudy days, wear them. everybody should wear sunglasses. so smart to be cool. wearing glasses tends to weaken your eyes? it really did you want. this is a big myth. wearing glasses brings you up to the norm. if your eyes are too much on one side or the other. if you re nearsighted or farsighted, and you get correction, whether it s contacts or glasses, it s take charge of what your eyes and brain are able to do. it brings you to the 50-yard line. it doesn t hurt anything. it makes things better. as long as your eyes don t hurt, you can wear contact lenses 24/7. this is a myth. if you don t have those extended wear gas permeable, oxygen permeable lenses where your ophthalmologist or optometrist says you can wear this for a week at a time, don t do it. eyes need to lubricate. they need to breathe. so if you re not sure, take them out. make sure you re careful of rinsing lenses. a lot of us went to the 60s and 70s putting our contacts in our mouths and back in our eyes, really dumb. it s boy did we all do it. we re a lot smarter, hopefully. children do not outgrow crossed eyes, myth or fact? if you re born with crossed eyes, one muscle group is stronger than another. there are exercises you do. but this is where you need to find a pediatric ophthalmologist who knows what he or she is talking about. sometimes surgery is necessary. most common for kids, eyes that are crossed or you can have a thing called lazy eye. in either way, children won t see normally. see a pediatric ophthalmologist. watching 3-d movies makes you feel seasick? this is a big fact. and you know, when avatar came out, some people said when you or i see things coming at us in the normal world, the eyes accommodate. we get slightly cross eyed. we look at our nose and our eyeballs move in. when you re in a 3-d movie, your eyes cannot accommodate quickly enough. if you find yourself getting seasick, close your eyes, take off the 3-d glasses, cover one eye, figure out what works for you. some people are more sensitive to this than others. the last one is important. most of us never heard it before. when older people gain a second sight or start to be able to see better, they may be developing cataracts. elderly people say, oh, my gosh, i don t need my glasses anymore. i look better. what happens is cataracts. this is a fact. if you re an older american and suddenly you realize you don t need your glasses as much as you think your vision is getting better, it may be because you ve got a clouding of the cornea, a cataract. and you may need surgery. you may need a different lens. but your eyes don t just get better on the spot. this is one of the thing ifs you get in early, you ll have better care and you can stop. my father is now in the 80s, both eyes operated on for cataracts. his vision is superb. go see good doctors, get one eye done at the time. that s the prudent thing to do. safe, outpatient procedure, and for a lot of older americans now, a great way to have good vision. thank you, working overtime. thank you, annie. thank you so much. you bet. coming up, how to channel your own personal sex in the city style. you may think you re like one of these women. you may think you re like one of these women. uh oh. i gotta go potty. now come on, guys, we all knew this day was coming. gotta go. hold on. this is no time to be hysterical. it s the perfect time to be hysterical. i gotta go, i gotta go, i gotta go. should we be hysterical? no. yes. maybe. i gotta go. but not right now! i did it. look at the office. cody and jessica helgeson and one of our design experts joining us. good morning, you guys. you ll see more of the room. what s the most surprising thing for you? i think just how personal everything feels. so many little touches and photographs and things that you incorporated that really matched our personality. so awesome to walk through here and see all that. it s a surprising go ahead, jessica. go ahead, honey. i was just going to say, i think something that s really surprising and wonderful and so useful for us are the two desk areas. that was the first thing that caught our attention. the marble on them are outstanding. thanks. and a great storage. you open the drawers and they re beautifully made and it s really going to be wonderful for us for a lot of years. we re having fun in arizona, natalie. i know you are. nate, that s an area, not just the master bedroom, so there s the office space you re standing in right now. you had to create something slow from one room to the next. how were you able to do that? what s the best design plan when people at home are having the same issue, perhaps? you know what, natalie? there s two tricks, really. one is the fact that there s two different colors there s paint color in the bedroom and there s turquoise and then a grass that s neutral. i think those wall colors work together. i used the same rug, a smaller one on this side and the larger one on this side sos would feel like one space. then they re to the side. and then the center table here so, when you re in the bedroom looking in this room, you don t just see an office, you see a beautiful space. that way they can work in here as well. but it doesn t read like home office in my bedroom. right. a lot of people are afraid of putting a piece of furniture in the middle of the room. what s the trick to getting that right? i know, you know what? it s totally true, natalie. i call it furniture under arrest because the furniture is up against the wall like this. so the trick to really getting it right is time to figure out that you have enough room to walk around pieces and not being afraid to do it. i mean, use the furniture you have. mix it up. try some things in unexpected places. try some pieces in the center of the room. because that way i m totally ignoring you guys. oh, no way, they re killing cody and jessica. i m so experiment, if you ve got a round table, try it out, see if you can get around it and see if it looks good from other angles. cody talked about how personal you made the space. i see pictures and knickknacks back there behind the bookcase. that, to me, is the hardest challenge, all of the knickknacks that you need, how you accessorize a room. what are some things to keep in mind. a book chelf should never just be books unless it s a true library. so you can see we have books going different directions, vases, french photos, candles. and, of course, these guys had so many amazing memories of their time in new york with the today show that it wasn t hard to find momentos. and actually cody s mom laughed when she saw this photo of them, if you guys can see it here. it s the cutest picture of them. cody singing to jessica in the worst voice. yeah? mama s love. his mother is like you sounded terrible, cody. but he looked cute. but it s important to mix in momentos and things like that. jessica, cody, i know you guys are huge fans of a design show. what does it mean to have a nate burkis-designed bedroom and office. it means more than we could possibly explain. i m completely blown away as i naokody is as well to have nate in our room and to have this mark left on our house. we basically we ll probably never move, never. that s great. thank you. you two are you should come to my house next, nate, and help me with my book shelves. i can? the end of most of the chapters, you offer how-to advice. like how to be a good detective? how to make good disguises. did you like make those up? or did you do research? or did they come from your imagination? oh. i m afraid the authorities have told me i m not allowed to tell you where i learned all those secrets. oh. no, books, magazines, television, all over the place. when i heard a good tip, how to you know, how to be a master of disguise or how to pick locks, i sort of i would stow it away and use it later. are you a master of disguise? yes, i am. in fact no. all right. let s see how our kid critics rated the book on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, 5 being the highest. kiki s strike gets 4 1/2 stars. way to go. very nice. thanks so much. coming up next month, the book club for kids will tackle middle world by john and pamela voelkel. tell us what you re reading this summer and you could be selected as our next guest critic. coming up next, the broadway cast of memphis. but first this, is today on nbc. the hit broadway show memphis tells it story of a young d.j. who s trying to play r&b music on memphis radio stations in the segregated 1950s. it evokes the power house spunk of james brown, the riffs of chuck barry. the grammy winner david brian, the co-writer of the musical and a founding member of bon jovi. good morning. special kudos to you. you were out at the meadow lands last night with bon jovi, right? yes, we opened it up. here you are to talk about this great thing. you must be feeling good. the show is nominated for eight tony awards. you were nominated because you wrote the music and the lyrics. glover and chad kimble also nominated. this is such a ride for you. it s great. it s a long journey of getting with joe dipietro from our brain, in to the theater. and everybody enjoying it. every night. an important story. talking about racism and talking about what unites us as people. not what separates us. and coming with your rock n roll background to broadway, what is that transition like for you. it s like writing songs. i wanted to write songs. and in this form, you write a song inside of a play. and if people can walk away singing it, it s a good song. the last time you were here, you were talking about this show. and i could see there was a passion. i guess the question really is, you know, what is it about this subject that cuts so deep in you? i think it is it s not about hate, it s about love. this show is where we have to go. in this scene, hui invites felicia down to the radio station and surprises her and lets her sing on the air for the first time. let s listen. take it away. this, folks, is what i mean by the music of my soul. a one, a two, a one, two, three, four some day i m going to do you wrong some day i ll leave you blue some day i m going to steal your heart some day i ll leave you waiting some day something to you and i m still let s just say that today and do what lovers do i m going to hurt you bad i know some night i aisle cause you pain i know some night i m going to leave you dry and crying in the rain but some nights i will say you re looking good so let s pretend tonight won t end and act like lovers should some day i m going to do you wrong some day i ll leave you blue oh some day i m going to steal your heart some day i ll hurt you some day i ll be such let s just say we ve got today let s just say we ve got today let s just say we ve got today and do what lovers do bravo. all right. that s so wonderful. you can feel that. congratulations. how are you two doing knowing with these nominations you have and having the show do so well? it s exhilarating. it s exhilarating. what a dream. all right. the tony awards next month. good luck to all of you. wish you luck. good luck tonight. thank you. thank you. more to come after this. a couple of problems. we will start with the map on duke street and blocking a lane. it has been a tough right and an accident is complicating that. over to the springfield interchange, look at the traffic building on southbound 95. into the work zone. back to you. before you start your holiday weekend, wake up with news 4 today for the news, i m sorry. it s thursday, may 27th. botox and lipo. we just want to make sure we re not in it. we re going to talk about ok a little later. we didn t go to our matinee yesterday. you had a book signing. but we brought broadway to you today. david brian is here. i think he s around. tony nominated for memphis. just did a number. that s a great, great, great show. when i have friends in town, i ve been three times, i take them to memphis. there s a picture in new york papers that was shocking. oh, this, you re not going to believe. okay. there was a 2-year-old, i thought it was phony. check out the paper. it s a 2-year-old in indonesia who is smoking. what are they calling it? ciggie smalls. two packs a day this kid goes through and when he doesn t get his cigarettes, he throws a tantrum and whacks his head against the wall. like me when i don t get my wine. he s 55 pounds and likes to scoot around because he gets winded. he can t keep up with other kids. it s child abuse. indonesia, i guess smoking is more prevalent. his father gave him his first seg rhett when he was 18 months old. he s holding it like he knows what s what. if you re 18 months and you re smoking, which i don t understand, the dad says, i don t understand what the big deal is. he says, he looks perfectly healthy to me. i guess people in neighboring towns are offering a car if the kid stops smoking. here s what s going to happen, child services people in indonesia are looking into you know removing the child. i don t know why the pictures are so disturbing. look at that. that s insane. this goes along with the obesity factor in children as well. want to know how you feel about it. kids are now, the parents are paying for surgery, different lap band surgeries and ways to gastric bypass. and the question is, should kids like that have that kind of surgery. i find it ridiculous i can t believe someone would do that because as a child, lap band and some of the other surgeries, it s not a cure-all deal. their bodies aren t completely developed into adulthood. i guess if it s to save your life, maybe in certain cases. but here s the thing. why aren t we just teaching them when they re lit itlelittle, to properly. send them outside to play. i did this dateline and i don t have if we have a clip, but i had flash cards here it is. i had flash cards and i was showing kids things like this. kfc et cetera. these kids can t read. mcdonald s. pizza. what does this say? what is that? burger king. what is that? mcdonald s. they all knew without reading. they knew the m for mcdonald s and didn t know the letter m. i understand, look, parents, you re tired, you re late, don t have time. not a lot of money. it s there and you get it. it s one of those things it s very expensive to eat healthily. you have to have time to get it. and the whole exercise thing. now with every kid of computer stuff, i don t know how you get your kids to do stuff. yours were always running around. i never heard the word play date until i had my own children. when i came home from school back in the 1800s, you went outside and played outside with other kids that were outside and you came home when your mother yelled. why are they so arranged now? i don t get it. i don t think people live in communities. right. that s a good point. and also, it s not a safe world for our children. there was a woman last week who used to wrote for the daily news, she had some very thoughtful columns at times. she decided we were too hovering over our children and we should take them to new york park last week and leave them there. leave them there. i didn t what was her point. to teach them how to be more resilient and independent. i said we should have chris hanson down there, too, just in case. i feel sorry for children these days because they can t be kids the way i was able to be. guess who just arrived? david, come on over here. congratulations. how many grammys? eight. that s a rock n roll moment. feel comfortable. on the tony nods. if you haven t seen the show memphis, it s great to see. i got my tony nom pin. how is it different? i try to class up the band. it s been unbelievable. a long journey. took eight year to get to broadway. i never gave up that vision. it s a story that talks about love, not hate. it celebrates what brings us together as people. there s that song i love, memphis lives in me. so many people connect to it. if you put your town name in there and close your eyes, it makes you feel so good. a beautiful, beautiful song. i think jersey lives in me. i m a real fan of classic book musicals and they don t write many of them anymore. i try to write them. they re difficult to do. this is a new story told in a classic way with new music and a new story. we care about these characters from the very beginning. i call it original piece, which is a future revival. it is my collaborator, we came up with a great concept and it shows how rock n roll and the arts push ahead social change. kids, rock n roll and how this started. a biracial love story. i saw it three times and i d see it again. congratulations. we want to give you a big thank you very much and i got to go to my other job tonight. we just opened up in new meadow land stadium. how s the stadium looking? good. and we ve got the super bowl. did we mention bon jovi? thank you so much. thank you. i love it when rock star/broadway stars drop by. if you love music, you may have tuned into american idol last night. it was simon s last ha ra. there were two people competing and the young woman, who i guess most thought would be the winner she s been the front-runner all along. she did not win, but the guy named lee dewyze did. lee dewyze! kind of a surprise to a lot of people and there s a lot of surprises in fact that night. bret michaels showed up. good for him. and sang. and sang well. every rose has its thorn wow. wow. i m so glad he looked so good. you know what? he s doing what he loves to do, hoda. sounds perfectly fine. wow. he won the aprint is. it turned into a little rose for simon cowell. paula abdul showed up. you know what paula said is true. you know, the show goes forward. it will be different, but i just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support the more gracious side of simon. i don t think anyone can. you know. there s only he s an original. i agree. but ellen now has her on record label. cover girl. enough. spread the love. we got to share a little about the shoes. we have the sex and the city shoes. these were actually worn on the show. these. these are in our size. can you get me those white ones. wow. what size are these? that is ridiculous. hold on. she s got those on. look. look at her. she s skinny. her feet are the biggest part of her. oh, these are oh, i like them. i don t think they re a gift, hoda. what are you talking about? are you sure? i like these. we got a big show. we got to go to sarah. we re talk about the surnlry for kids that are overweight and carol said, no, just go out and play with them. missy was like a thousand times, never have surgery for kids, the change of family, there are no quick fixes. seems like the general consensus. there s a deeper, underlying problem there. we re saying if you have all these severe food issues, maybe that doctor is not the one you ought to be seeing. coming up, sex and the city s night gay. he s with us. he probably prefers to be called his real name. we ll talk with him right after this. nice mug. looks like we no longer have to count down to sex and the city 2 because at midnight, the theatres are opening their doors. today, we re down to our final dude. he s david eigenberg. i got a cup of coffee and some hoda hooch. what have you got in that cup? we know how to take care of you. your beautiful wife and your little baby boy. now that s right there. in your face. he s got a little saints cap on. is he a fan? he is a big saints fan. doing a movie like this, it is all about excess and about that kind of over the top life. you then go home off the set to this. what s that s like? this is the greatest privilege i ve had to be a part of something. the kids are the best. i love i know. and i melt when my wife burns me. she gets mad at me a lot. how old is he? 16 months. you were at the premier, doing your thing. last premier, you watched a little of the movie, then wound up greeting fans outside. what did you do this time? i grabbed my buddy and said, let s go. but you hasn t seen the film yet. when it come to a theatre near you. they sent me the thing on a plastic disc. oh, my gosh. and then i cried because i looked like an old shoe. but you don t have sex scenes in this particular movie. louis button it. turn him outside down. there we go. kid cries, turn him upside down. the first movie. the first one, i don t think it exists in his world. i don t think it will ever exist. i don t want him to see his father s behind. i thought my father s behind, god bless him, he s not here any longer. my dad was i used to have a place in the city. i had a bathtub in the kitchen. he said, i want to take a bath. he just had his hip replaced. this was about ten years ago. when we were in the hospital once, said make sure you cover up his father s behind. he said, don t worry, i don t have one. he didn t. happens to all jewish men. it goes away. frank calls that, you have a terrible disease called can i say this probably not. i like how miranda s character evolves in this movie. i like hanging out with you guys. are we more fun you are a lot more fun. i tell you guys makeupless and you looked fantastic. i liked that show. those girls are like nine hours in the chair. makeup, makeup again. we need another layer. like forget it. i m going to kill you guys for that. we got to go, but we love you and your family. congratulations on your real success. thank you. give you a little party animals book. when i m down and out, call up, check up on me, all right?
