captions paid for by nbc-universal television and welcome to today on this tuesday morning. i m ann curry. i m matt lauer. and, wow, that was a pretty emotional scene last night. there was ant dry eye in the house, pun intended, when gabby giffords walked on to the floor to cast her vote. that s right. the chamber walked it as you can see in thunderous applause as hugs and kisses and tears. another milestone on giffords road to recovery. coming up, why she said she had to be there for last night s vote, plus what we expect to happen in washington today as the debt deadline finally is here. also ahead, casey anthony s whereabouts have been unknown since her relief from prison last month. but now a judge says she has until tomorrow to return to florida. we re going to explain why in a live report coming up. also, an oregon mother is appealing a custody decision that allows her two sons to live with their stepmother. that stepmother shot and killed her own daughter 20 years ago. this morning the mother of those two boys are sharing her story in an exclusive live interview. jennifer lopez speaks out for the first time about her divorce from marc anthony. let s begin in washington with the latest on today s debt limit deadline. congresswoman gabrielle giffords triumph return to congress. two reports with andrea mitchell. good morning. good morning. it s washington ever needed an inspirational survival story it was certainly now. gabby giffords return was a d badly needed emotion alton anything. she was walking and congressional. clearly remembering names and faces. it was a moment of personal triumph so transforming, so exhilarating for a time that even swept away the bickering and ill will, as gabby giffords made her surprise entrance on to the house floor to make her vote, fellow democrats and republican rivals alike lept to their feet in a spontaneous standing ovation. it lasted a full ten minutes. the first public notice came in a tweet from her office. gabrielle has returned to washington to support a bipartisan bill to prevent economic crisis. several rights veteran john lewis wept. another took her face and said, it s you, it s you. giffords told friends the vote was so important she wanted to be there to help. we walked into the chamber together. just, you know, the room exploded. i mean, it was just, like i said, it was effect electrifyin. members were crying. it s been such a tough few days. to see her triumphly walk back into the chamber, as a friend, as a girlfriend, it was just one of the most amazing moments. reporter: giffords tweeted, the capitol looked beautiful and i am honored to be at work tonight. later she explained, i had to be here for this vote. i could not take the chance that my absence could crash our economy. the miracle is that it comes seven months after she was shot through the head, gunned down at a constituent event in tucson. we marveled at her progress every step of the way. emergency surgery, then tynely signs of recovery. a squeeze of her husband s hand. the movement of an arm. a smile. she moved to houston to continue her rehabilitation. by membfebruary, a major breakthrough, she began to speak, ask for toast. by april, to florida to watch the launch of the space shuttle endeavour commanded by her husband mark kelly. by june the office released the first pictures. her hair cropped close and darker with dplash eflashes of e smile. and step by step to the day she could finally stand on the house floor and cast a critical vote. throughout america there isn t a name that stares more laws, more admiration, more respect, more wishing for our daughters to be like her than the name of congresswoman gabby giffords. thank you, gabby, for joining us. reporter: aided by her husband, surrounded by friends, she departed as quietly as she had arrived, leaving her colleagues who had been bruised for months by political battle, sharing welcome tears of joy. so in doubters and skeptics, but never doubt her determination. this is the first of many votes that she s going to cast. nothing could have done more to heal congress wounded spirits nan seeing gabby giffords back on the job, even for one vote. and today mark kelly and his fellow astronauts will be at the white house to be thanked and honored by the president. ann? all right, andrea mitchell. thank you so much for that report. we re now joined by giffords close friend congresswoman debbie. good morning to you, congresswoman. good morning, ann. this has got to be one of the most triumph returns ever in congress. the house divided united in tears with so much emotion. but what were congresswoman giffords emotions? how much of this warm welcome mean to her? she was absolutely overwhelmed. when she came in the chamber she was excited, she was greeting people all of the way up to stairs. what was so incredible, and this just shows you how much progress that she s made, it s one thing for her to recognize, you know, good friends, faces, and colleagues, but as she walked up the stairs, she saw bill livinggood, our house sergeant at arms, and immediately said, livingood and gave him a big hug. it was just another example of how much fight and determination she has. she felt it was absolutely crucial for her voice and the voice of her constituents to be present in that room, she needed to be the pivotal vote to make sure the country didn t default for the first time in history and she decided it was important on really probably the most important bill that we will consider this whole congress, that the constituents in the 8th district of arizona had their representative there to cast her vote. that said, as a measure of what she had to overcome to be there, what were her worries? i know you started talking about this on sunday. what were her worries about when she was trying to make the decision about whether or not to go? well, actually she didn t have too many worries. her as she watched the debates unfold, as she followed the discussions, she came to the realization that it was absolutely critical that her absence not be the reason that the nation could default. she thought it was important for her to be there, to cast that vote. it was in terms of worry, i didn t detect any worry in talking to mark and to gabby, they felt gabby especially, that her district needed that voice in that room. now she s going to go back and continue her recovery. she s got a long way to go, but this was a triumph return, ann. i mean, listening to the whole thing all over again, it was i teared up again. it s so it was such a moment that the congress needed, that the country needed. everyone has been praying for this moment. and for it to happen at a time when we have had bitter partisanship and very grizzled, hardened hearts, gabby melted that hardened heart last night. hopefully it s an opening and an opportunity for us in the second half of this effort as commission begins to meet for us to really come together and put forward a balanced plan that makes sure we can get our economy really on the way again to turning around and recovering. congresswoman, i want you to stand by because i want to quickly bring in dr. nancy snyderman. sure. it appears based on what we understand how much she recognized, how great she looked. we re witnessing something of a medical miracle. it was a wonderful outcome of an amazing woman who really epitomizes everything that can go right in a horrific accident. phenomenal emergency response in arizona. great team. great trauma center. level one care. phenomenally strong end patient. a rich family support system. and the bullet trajectory meant that early on she wasn t paralyzed but it did go to the frontal lobe which is the executive thinking part of the brain and exited the language part. so i m thrilled that she made this entrance yesterday. i think congresswoman really pointed out that now she still has to work on the language and speech and executive functions. but it was a phenomenal moment. and a real story to go to the u.s. medical system. thank you for that perspective. congresswoman debbie wasserman shultz. we re going the work hard. you re welcome. thank you. it is now 7:10. here s matt. now, more on the reason for gabby giffords return to capitol hill, the key vote on the debt deal. kelly o donnell has the latest on that. kelly, one down, one to go. it s passed the house. how does it look in the senate? it does look pretty good in the senate. and that comes off of all of the energy that we saw in the house. speaker john boehner was able to get this bill across the line with a comfortable 50 plus vote margin. and, matt, after all the drama in the lead-up to this, where there was so much concern about tea party conservatives fall in line and that kind of thing, it was actually liberal democrats who voted no in greater numbers. the reason behind that, many of them were upset that the president had signed on to a deal that included about $2.5 trillion but no new taxes. they re worried there will be too much burden on those who need social programs. there was really a lot of push-back from democrats. the vice president was here and he got an ear full in a private meeting with democrats. part of the energy was directed right at him from members who said they believe the tea party had acted like terrorists and hostage takers. biden was caught up in that conversation. later his office said that he did not believe using a term like terrorist was appropriate in political discourse. so that gives you a sense of how the earth was moving. there was a lot of anger directed at the house and that democrats, like the vice president, will bring this deal together. conservatives weren t happy in some cases, defense cuts, and some of them wanted a more sweeping reform that might help reduce the debt in a greater way. but it got through the house and today the senate is the last big test, matt. we should expect to see some resistance there, too, but certainly leaders in the senate feel a lot more relieved that the house was more unpredictable got this across the line and then it s just left to the president to sign if the senate follows through today. kelly o donnell on capitol hill for us today. thank you very much. another big story brewing, and that s about it could become the first hurricane in the season and setting its sights on florida. al roker has what is now tropical storm emily. good morning, ann. right now emily is 265 southeast of san juan. 40-mile-per-hour winds, moving west, tropical storm watches up for the u.s. virgin islands, st. kitts, haiti. the path of the storm right now looks like it will come over espaniola, cuba, and make its away across the northwest and the bahamas and just skirt saturday on into sunday. right now remaining a tropical storm. it s got to get over the mountains of cuba. it will determine what it will do, whether it will break up, head out go the gulf or the coast. this looks like the strongest course possible. but right now as you can see, it stays a tropical storm but that could still change. matt, ann? al, thank you. there are dramatic new details this morning on exactly what happened during that daring raid that ended in the death of osama bin laden. nbc s peter alexander is in washington, d.c. this morning with more on this story. peter, good morning. ann, good morning to you. this is the most detailed reporting of an exactly what happened a that night when navy s.e.a.ls stormed the compound in pakistan. the s.e.a.ls covert operation lasted just about 38 adrenaline-fueled minutes. the new yorker s spoke to numerous specialized forces involved with the raid. this is a perfect story of a near miss, dramatic heroism and ultimately the award on terrorist crowning success. the target, the world s top terrorist, osama bin laden. on the night of may 1st, a pair of black how long helicopters, including the one that crashed, unloaded 23 s.e.a.l.s, a pakistani translator and a dog named cairo at bin laden s secret hideout. he just told them there s a security operation going on behind these walls. go back to your homes and turn your lights off. turn your lights off. that s it. people did that. they had no reason to think they were talking to an american. reporter: according to the military forces, the fields with each carrying a booklet of photos and description of who to expect inside, first killed the cu courier near the guest house and then inside the home. the first floor to the second floor. there were mal gates, almost cages blocking the entrance going up the stairs. so i think that they thought at this point if there were metal gates blocking the entranceway up the stairs, there s something going on. bigger target up stairs? that s right. the s.e.a.l. entered the first hallway, tall, rangy individual with the long beard. that s bin laden. reporter: his sources saban lad den was standing be hind two women, including his youngest wife who was hysterical. the s.e.a.l.s feared the women were wearing suicide vest. the first s.e.a.l. through the doorsteped forward, wrapped them both in a bear hug, turned around pushed them off to the side. he was willing to sacrifice his life if they detonated those vests. exactly. if he moved and went out to the side the second s.e.a.l. lifted his m-4 rifle and first shot her in the chest and shot him once in the head and that was it. nine years seven months and 20 days after september 11th, the world s most wanted terrorist, code name geronimo, was dead. had the s.e.a.l.ing ever considered detaining, not shooting bin laden? the s.e.a.ls contended there was never, that this was not a capture or kill mission. these guys were going in on a kill mission. nbc news confirmed the reporting. and after the raid the president met those s.e.a.ls in ft. campbell, kentucky, and first heard about the dog cairo whose role had he been needed would have been to sniff out bin laden in that compound. the squadron commander told mr. obama if you want to meet the dog, mr. president, i advise you bring treats. ann? a lot of them. peter alexander, dramatic details. thank you. 7: 20. once again, here s matt. thank you. casey anthony s whereabouts have been a closely guarded secret since she was acquitted of murdering her daughter. now the judge says anthony must return to florida by tomorrow afternoon. nbc s kerry sanders is in orlando to explain. good morning to you. reporter: good morning, matt. the judge ordered she is to show up at this building in orlando and meet her probation officer. everyone thought she was free to go wherever she wanted. she had no need for any sort of supervision. but now the judge has clarified an order saying she has a one-year probation to serve, and she has to complete that time right here in orlando. two weeks ago when casey anthony walked out of jail a free woman, orlando attorney richard harns by wandered how could she simply disappear when she still has a year s probation to fulfill. he had been a little analyst during the eight-week-long trial at orlando nbc affiliate rush-2 news. it s interesting to see how reporter: 16 months ago casey pled guilty to passing bad checks. are you entering this plea freely and voluntarily? yes, i am. reporter: the store security camera showed her buying sunglasses, clothes, even the blue hoodie she wore when she was arrested. i m sorry for what i did. i take complete and full responsibility for my actions. reporter: this sentence in the check fraud case handed down by judge stan strickland called for a year s probation. has anybody forced you into doing this? reporter: yet somehow casey was given credit for that probation while in her jail cell. i kind of felt like casey anthony was getting a significant break that the average joe would not have ggot reporter: on monday he ordered casey anthony, you shall report within 72 hours to the probation and parole office in orange county, florida. we the jury find the defendant not guilty. reporter: casey, who was declared indigent by the court, has been in hiding. if she follows the court order to return to orlando, it s unclear where she would live. maybe at her parents home where she once lived with her daughter caylee. while it may not apply to her, in the most extreme cases in florida, some paroled convicts forced to provide an address choose to live under bridges, in homeless camps. every person must give us an address or location so we can supervise them. that might be a home, a hotel room, it might be a sidewalk, it might be the parking lot of a probation office. reporter: under florida law, whatever address she gives would be made public. part of the public record. posted even on the internet unless a special exception is made. now, casey s attorney cheney mason says he plans to go to court today to file a motion to get judge strickland disqualified from this case and he hopes in the process his order requiring casey anthony show up at this building by tomorrow. kerry sanders in orlando this morning. thank you very much. still ahead, an oregon mother distraught over a child custody decision that allows her sons to live with a woman who killed her daughters. but first, this is today on nbc. why is their father okay with this? can a court do anything to stop it? coming up, that mother shares her story in an exclusive live interview. also ahead this morning, jennifer lopez is speaking out in her first interview since announcing her divorce from marc anthony. just ahead we re going to hear her candid remarks about her love life and hear a little bit more about what may have led to this divorce rn. and should you let your children share your bed? surprising research adding fuel to what is already a fiery debate. let s begin this half hour with the custody dispute over two boys who share a home with a woman who killed her own daughters. we ll talk to that mother, but first, miguel almaguer has the story were when they married in 1995, she knew of her husband s tragic past, his two daughters had died when they were shot by his ex-wife. they divorced and now living in the pacific northwest with her two teenage sons. the island is known or for its quaint downtown, beautiful landscapes and large secluded properties. it s down the driveway one one of those driveways where trisha is scared history might repeat itself. i came to realize that my ex-husband s first wife was back in the home. and so that caused concern for me due to the fact that she killed their two children. reporter: she shares custody of her two teenage sons with her ex-husband, john cushing jr. they spent half of the time in his home with his first wife, the woman who shot their two daughters. in 1991 they lived in southern california with their two daughters, 8-year-old amy and 4-year-old stephanie. neighbors called christine supervissuper mom but close friends knew she suffer fred a heart condition, took prozac for depression and filing for a divorce for john. christine shot and killed her daughters in their home. it was probably one of the worst calls that i ve handled in my career. reporter: jim was one of the first officers to respond the night of the shootings. she really kind of just was a zomb zombie. she wasn t there. she wasn t in that place at that time. reporter: christine pled not guilty by reason of insanity. prosecutors agreed to the plea saying up until the shooting christine was the perfect mother. four years later, john cushing married trisha and they raised two sons until their divorce in 2005. meanwhile, christine spent four years in a mental institution and after a decade of psychiatric monitoring, she received an unconditional release from the state of california in 2005 when authorities determined she pose nod risk. that same year, despite the death of their children, she remarried john cushing, trisha s ex-husband. i just learned that he had been in contact with her throughout our marriage. reporter: conlin says when she realized christine was spending time with her sons she asked for a change in the couple s custody agreement but the request was denied. the commissioner saying, despite the serious history in this case, there is no presentation of a current threat to the children. i m not willing to risk my kids lives on speculation when a person is capable, they re capable. john and christine cushing have not responded to our request for an interview but in court documents john has said christine s sanity has, quote, been restored and she is enjoying life again. matt? miguel almaguer, thank you very much. christine is here with her attorney. good morning to both of you. good morning. let s make it clear. as you are sitting in this studio right now, your two sons, age 14 and 13, are staying with your ex-husband and christine, correct? that s right. what was it like to drop them off this time? it wasn t easy. it was gut wrenching. you know, it was i don t even have words to describe it, i guess, is what it comes down to. these boys are old enough to know what s going on. have they expressed concerns to you? are they worried about their safety? have they ever talked about christine doing anything in their presence that makes them worry? you know, i m trying as much as i can to keep them out of this, away from this. this should be an easy custody battle between adults and i would rather not talk about what their thoughts are. after christine was released from the mental institution where she received treatment for four years, she and your ex-husband, her ex-husband as well, got back together. is it true that when she moved back into his home, john lied to you about it or at least hid the truth about it? yes, that is true. did he also instruct your boys when they would come to visit to call christine by another name and lie to you about it? yes. and when you presented that evidence to a family court, i guess, what was the response to that? because you wanted an immediate change to the parenting plan. that s correct. that s correct. what did the court say to you? i what was said was that there hadn t been she hasn t hurt anybody since 2008, so they didn t allow a change in the plan at this point. the commissioner said despite the serious history in the case, meaning back to 1991, there s no presentation of a current threat to the children. why do you think there is a current threat to the children, to your children? well, in 2007 her psychiatrist reported her child protective services in washington state and child protective services investigated the case and felt that there was very substantial that her psychiatrist felt that there was a need to report this situation. and so it is there is reason, there is currency here. it s not something that just happened 20 years ago. advocate for christine or if i m an advocate for mental health in general, i would have to say, wait a second, this woman was said to be temporarily insane when she killed her own daughters. she has received extensive professional treatment. she s been monitored for a long period of time, absent that one incident that trisha just talked about, and she has posed no threat to these two boys in the last three years, she is not guilty in the eyes of the law. why shouldn t she be given a second chance because mental illness is a disease. how do you respond? first of all, this is not a criminal case. this is a family law matter. what trisha is asking the court to do is to make sure her children is safe. limitations and safeguards in the existing parenting plan. what you need to know is the commissioner actually dismissed trisha s case saying that trisha s case had no merit, no merit to bring this case for a modification of the parenting plan, she had no merit to have parenti ining value eighter. i would have to look at this, would i ever want my children around her? i would say no. but that is an emotional reaction coming from a parent. this is not an allegation. these are facts. undisputed facts in the record that this woman has harmed children in the past. she has killed children in the past. trisha, your husband clearly loves your two sons so you also have to ask the question, why would he put them in harm s way if he truly felt there was a threat present from christine, have you thought about that? i have. i ve spoken to folks in the mental health profession and the words guilt and denial come up, you know, to believe that she s okay, to believe that it was the fault of prozac and the fault of medical events coming together, i m sure helps, you know, his helps him to deal with it as well. imagine the two boy are with them right now. what s the next legal step? [ male announcer ] it s the at&t network. and what s possible in here is almost impossible to say. back now at 7:44. jennifer lopez speaking at the end of her seven-year marriage to marc anthony, nbc tamron hall has details. this is the first time lopez has talked about the split since it was announced two weeks ago in a september issue of vanity fair she said it was the hardest decision she ever had to face, adding, i really wanted this family to work. you sure couldn t tell by their performance of the american idol finale in may that just seven weeks later jenner lopez and marc anthony would release a joint statement announcing they were breaking up. now we know what they do at home. reporter: but it turns out there was a lot we didn t know. no one knows for sure, and that s why in an interview with j.lo her first interview since the spread it s something a lots of people are going to want to read. reporter: in the september issue of vanity fair the superstar, singer, actress, mother of 3-year-old twins says, quote, marriage is tough, it s definitely challenging. when asked if she and marc anthony fought during their marriage she admitted they did about everything, adding, we re spicy. in a portion of the interview conducted while the couple was still together lopez was asked who runs the show. she responded, sometimes i need to be in charge, sometimes he needs to be in charge. i ve been told by several people that marc anthony had been very controlling, that he had some jealousy issues and it was definitely a point of conflict in their marriage. reporter: as for the break-up, lopez tells vanity fair sometimes it doesn t work and that s sad. but i remain an eteshal optimist about love. i believe in love. it s still my biggest dream. while lopez doesn t reveal the reason for the break-up, she says i will always respect marc as a singer and performer. he will always hold a special place in my heart as the father of my children. and out of respect for our family, i will keep private the details of our personal life. according to reports despite their split lopez and anthony are moving forward with their plans to work to the and launch a new latin talent show called the chosen. ann? tamron hall, thank you. lisa robinson, a contributinged for for vanity fair wrote the article. good morning. good morning. you first sat down with jennifer lopez three weeks before the announcement. at that time in that first discussion, you sensed that she was grappling with something, that was beyond whether or not that she was going to be on her program american idol. american idol, right. what was your sense then? i got a sense of a woman who was coming to terms with herself as a strong, independent woman, and she said to me at the time that she felt the most important relationship that she had was with herself and that she had to learn how to love herself. and we went very, very deep. you know, i started out writing what i felt was a showbiz profile and it turned into quite a dramatic thing. we spoke for about three hours that day. and as we talked, we talked about her old relationships, you know, my story in vanity fair really goes into this into quite a lot of depth. we talked about her old relationships and love and romance. she started talking about what she had learned about herself in relationships that didn t work. and in so doing she made a statement that a lot of women can identify. she said something like, quote, as well we are naturally giving and we take care of others. we just have this tendency to put ourselves on the back burner. but we need to be conscious about loving and taking care of ourselves, too. so is this kind of thinking, which i think so many women really understand, was that this play, do you think, in what has happened now? in retrospect i realize now what she was saying that day i don t think she was had made a decision that day. i don t think their marriage was over that day. i had asked her to qualify some of the things she had said to me, and she sent me an e-mail, oh, a week or so later that even stronger about i can walk away from things if they re not what i feel right for me or something you know, if i m in a relationship where someone isn t treating me correctly, this is all in the story, in the magazine. right. but it s just the idea of this female empowerment. you know, she was talking about women being on the backburner, putting men first. i think she was coming to terms with not wanting that for herself. did she say i know there s been a lot of reporting about a possible jealousy involved, you know, difficulties because both working. did you get any sense of why beyond what you ve already described? well, what she said to me was afterwards when we spoke after they announced it, she said it was the hardest decision she ever made in her life. she was sad. she wanted this family to work. they both tried very hard. i think she told me when they were first married she had three years just to be with him alone and then they had the babies and then she went back to work. i think when, you know, her career went back into the stratosphere with american idol, maybe that put a lot of pressure on her. beautifully written piece about one of our greatest stars. thank you so much. and, also, marc anthony, is also one of our greatest stars. coming up just ahead, should you or shouldn t you? we ve got some great recipes that will actually give you time to enjoy your guests. we look forward to that. before we go any further let s go inside. natalie is standing by at the news desk with a look at the headlines. good morning again. good morning, everyone. with a midnight deadline looming the senate votes today on the bill. the house approved the controversial compromise last night but the highlight, arizona congresswoman gabby giffords surprised the house there and brought it down as she arrived to cast her vote. it was a rare moment of yunity since her first public appearance since she was shot in the head seven months ago. and congresswoman debbie wasserman shultz said she is prepari preparing giffords to run for congress again. the discovery of the missing girl s body monday in new hampshire has entins fid the mystery of how she died. nbc s michelle franzen has more now in new hampshire. michelle, good morning. good morning, natalie. this town of course devastated by news of celina s death. so far her mom, stepfather and other family memberses have not spoken out publicly about their loss. autopsy is scheduled for later this morning, but investigators say they already have enough evidence to believe her death may not have been an accident. dive teams located celina cass body monday in the connecticut river a quarter of a mile from her home. we have brought celina home, not the way we wanted to bring her home. reporter: authorities say they don t know how or where her body was put in the water. shifting this week long missing persons case into a criminal investigation. based on what we have seen visually we are treating it as suspicious. reporter: investigators say they are focused on celina s family home, the last place her mother and stepfather told authorities they saw her. investigators have said they re cooperating and are not calling them or anyone else suspects. but monday before celina s body was discovered, stepfather appeared before tv cameras outside the home, walking and suddenly dropping to his knees and sprawling his body across the driveway. a short time later, an ambulance arrived. paramedics took him to a nearby medical center. monday night, the tiny town of 800 gathered at a vigil. all trying now to cope with the loss of celina. it doesn t make sense. not really sinking in yet. she was a fun, loving girl. she had a heart of gold. she would give the shirt off her back to keep you warm. reporter: investigators say throughout this past week they have fielded more than 500 tips. many of those search and rescue and volunteers have left this town. but certainly investigators have a lot of work left to do. natalie? for years we ve been told it s not a good thing, but now a new study shows the practice may not have any negative long-term effects at all. here s nbc chief s medical editor dr. nancy snyderman. we just wanted to keep our room as a safe haven for our children and a place where they could feel comfortable coming, whether it be with a bad dream or just when they re sick or just to cuddle. with the work schedule that i have it s one of the few opportunities where i can actually spend some quiet time with the kids. reporter: megan and, the obisa are part of a growing trend of parents who are no longer ashamed to say they share their bed with their children. 5-year-old and 3-year-old both started off in mom and dad s bed. our youngest daughter is 15 months old now and she is currently co-sleeping with us. reporter: and while megan and tobias say they still enjoy having margo in their room, the practice of bed sharing has always been a controversial one among parents and doctors in the united states. many other countries have been doing this for years, particularly in asia and africa. all of a sudden it s hit in our country. i like to sleep in mom s room. reporter: in general the medical advice on bed sharing is inconsistent. the american academy of pediatrics recommends against bed sharing during infancy because of concerns it could contribute to sudden infant death syndrome, otherwise known as sids. another medical concern is bed sharing could hinder healthy sleep habits. and then there are are the needs of mom and dad, whose own sleep and intimacy could be in jeopardy. sometimes that could be a stum bler with a little guy sleeping in between you. reporter: good news for parents who choose to share their bed like megan and tobias. researchers at columbia teachers college found no long-term effects on bed sharing on cognitive outcome or behavioral problems in the children of nearly 1,000 families studied. you think this through, make good choices based on what you think is going to work for your family and then stick to it because kids, above all else, work best with routines. number one reason that we continue doing this is the bonding that our whole family really has experienced. nancy joins us now along with child psychiatrist joshua winer. good morning to both of you. we re talking about toddlers now. and bed sharing, we talk about the occasion aal nightmare, or permanent arrangement? a family bed. there are a lot of people who believe that there s nothing wrong to have children between mom and dad, it s safe, it s end mate. you regulate each other s breathing. it s become a cultural no-no and the question has been, can kids grow up to be okay? this study says yes. but you still do not recommend it for the people you see. why? i don t recommend it for anyone who has the infant for the risk that was presented in the earlier piece. also there are 100 deaths per year from parents who accidentally roll over on to their babies or suffocate them. that s the medical side of things. that s the infanticide. that s for the infants. for the older kids, personal choice. the reason i don t recommend it is primarily studies shown that kids who sleep with their parents don t sleep as well and the parents generally don t sleep as well. the other issue has to do with intimacy. finally, once parents get into the pattern of letting their kids sleep in bed with them it s a very difficult habit to break. also a stigma, i don t know why. there are some parents who are so embarrassed by this or feel guilty about it that they call them actually closet sleepers. they don t admit it to their friends. why is that? i think the reason they don t want to admit it is because many people are going to assume that s a sign of a weak parent, a parent who isn t firm, a parent who doesn t discipline their child well. they don t want to look like they don t have control over their kids. kids go off to hearvard with their parents. there s a natural time that you say the child is ready to go. and you can do it. and there s a time when children are going to want their own space. parents need it. you used an expression in the piece there, co-sleeping as opposed to bed sharing. is at this time same thing? co-sleeping is bringing it close to you, part of a mother breastfeeding, regulating each other s sleeping, holding on to a child. it s a nurturing time and then putting the child in his or her bed. bed sharing means it s a family bed. some benefits of sharing a bed with your child. easier to breast-feed, better sleep for mom and infant because the mom is not jumping out of bed five or six times, regulated breathing for mom and infant. true. fewer instances of sids. we talked about that. lower cortisone secretions, less stress. yeah. because cortisol is the stress hormone. when your baby is close to you you really release a different hormone called oxytosin which means you feel good and calm. you say ways to break the cycle. gently but firmly carry the kid back to the room. this is for kids coming into the room in the middle of the night, maybe they ve been scared or something like that. be calm, be gentle, be comforting but firm and boring. bring them back to the room. rub their backs. tell them you love them and see them in the morning. don t play. don t peek-a-boo. and repetition, repetition, repetiti repetition. you have to break the cycle. repeat. and judge for yourself, if you are sleep deprived because your child is sleeping in the bed, it s not good for anything. sleep is the most critical piece. make sure that everybody is sleeping well. if everybody is sleeping well, i don t care where you sleep. people underexaggerate who is in their bed and overexaggerate their sex lives. that s it. you just threw that in there. i wanted to get you. nancy, joshua, thank you very much to both of you. up next, an exclusive look inside will and jada smith s 25,000 square foot estate. that s right after this. phil mickelson, pro golfer. if you have painful, swollen joints, i ve been in your shoes. one day i m on p of the world. the next i m saying. i have this thing called psoriatic arthritis. i had some intense pain. it progressively got worse. my rheumatologist told me about enbrel. i m surprised how quickly my symptoms have been managed. i think this is really simple. everything in it is completely natural and vividly flavorful. you re making a chicken dish that can be served hot or cold. yes. do you prefer it one way or the other? i like it both ways. who doesn t like a nice juicy piece of grilled chicken but also cold if you re picnicking for going to the racetrack. this dish, a lot of people tend to go out and buy chicken breast. you say, no, think about chicken thighs but you can do this with chicken breasts. that is the number one cut of chicken in the united states. but chicken thighs, as you know. i love them. more flavor and many times when you re trying to keep your budget under control, chicken thighs is much less expensive. how do we get started? do me the honor of whisking. this is the chicken thigh marinated in a terragon mustard vinaigrette. you mix in your water-based ingredients and slowly drizzle in olive oil. i ll try to keep it off your suit. please. our goal is to emulsify. that s fast for me. no, you go fast. all right. the goal is to combine the oil-based ingredients with our vinegar and mustard. a little bit of garlic. and dijon mustard and tarragon is the classic combination. how long in advance do you start to marinade the chick sen? a good four of six hours. do you do it right in this zip-lock bag? i do. put this, of course, in the refrigerator. get it covered good and well. the zipper bag, you don t need as much marinade. when you re done with that, brick it out of the refrigerator, you pat it down before you put it on the grill, why? moisture is your enemy when you re trying to brown food. the flavor at that point after four hours the flavor is in the chicken. i try to pat it down with paper towels. our goal is to get a nice brown. look at that gorgeous skin side down first. grill tray or plate, you can do it on a open grill. i prefer to do it on charcoal. i know you would as well. that s a little complicated out here. perfect. we ve got that. cooked it up nice and tender. you re going to serve it up with corn and tomato salad? yes. here is my trick for summer corn. i just learned is if you microwave the corn in the husk for a minutes and a half per ear it becomes much easier to get the silt off. it softens the silt. this has a little bit of it coming off. the silt already starts coming off. i have never heard anybody say that. hit this with your vegetable brush. brush it with olive oil. then just finish it off, four or five minutes on the grill and get these gorgeous char marks. now, i m right now traveling the country with the robert mondavi discover wine tour where we talk about pairing food like this with wine. this i think is a great dish and the sweetness of the corn, also, great compliment. and the tomatoes are here. cut that off the ear. serve it with diced tomatoes. absolutely. toss that up with some of our gorgeous, at least, our tomatoes are ripe. i can make a little presentation for you, i suppose. okay. and are you a charcoal person? charcoal. charcoal is the way to go. absolutely. plate that with the chicken for dessert. you have a cobbler here. four different kinds of berries. a little bit of honey, flour, and rolled oats and brown sugar for the topping. i made this over a camp fire once in a dutch oven. it s a fun dish. super easy. of course,off got to have the ice cream. a little vanilla ice cream. can i serve you one? my question is, that i just had my annual physical and i have high cholesterol and my bone density test came back with osteopenia. my question is what should i eat to lower my cholesterol while increasing my calcium intake? i eat cheese and yogurt and cottage cheese, et cetera, for calci calcium, but then i m raising my cholesterol. let s get started on this? atsz great question. it s really important for you to know that only low fat dairy, regular cheese, regular milk, ice cream, is going to raise your cholesterol level. so really as long as you re choosing nonfat or low fat dairy, like skim milk and 1% milk and low fat yogurt, you re going to get calcium for your bones and not touch your cholesterol level. it s a total win-win. the only caveat is you re going to want to moderate the reduced fat cheese. typically it s going to say 2% milk on that package. and the only reason is, even though it s way better than the full fat cheese when it comes to your cholesterol, it still has a few grams of the saturated fat. i say one regular cheese and you will be fine. definitely take advantage of the nondairy calcium sources, collard greens, broccoli, almonds, tofu because that plays double duty, calcium for your bones and drives down your cholesterol level. good luck. good luck. thank you for your great question. okay. next we have jen on the phone with us from minneapolis, minnesota. good morning, jen. what s your question for joy? good morning. i heard it s better to buy organic dairy products. what does the label organic mean when it comes to dairy products and what are the beneficial what are the benefits of choosing organic dairy? great question because a lot of peopleconfused. it is tricky. organic dairy comes from organically raised cows. these cows are not treated with antibiotics or hormones and they eat feed that is 100% organic. no pesticides or chemical fertilizers or genetically modified feed and they graze around in the pastures. you will know a dairy item is organic because it s going to sport an organically certified seal from the usda on the label. mainstream brands include stone anyfield farms and organic valley and there are a few other ones out there. or rye zone is another good one. 23 you find a brand generic or your store brand it s stip typically going to be cheaper. take advantage of that. in terms of health benefits, organic is more natural, better for the environment, better for the cows. conundrum, it s more expensive. i think a good compromise is to buy organic milk and don t worry so much about the cheese and the yogurt and the other things. for people that can t afford any organic, please don t worry because as long as you re choosing low fat dairy over full fat dairy, i promise you you are doing your body a great service. thank you, jen, for your great question. really good question. thank you. next a viewer e-mail. this one comes from gayle in vermont. i love salads. what are the most nutritious lettuce greens to use as my base, ro main, mesculin, spinach leaves? [ male announcer ] and try glad black bags strong for tough jobs. this morning on parenting today, the cost of raise our children. a new report from babies finds that from diapers to college degree, the average middle class family will spend about $250,000 on each child. how should you be saving for the recession generation? jean chatzky is today s financial editor and contributor for babycenter.com. good to see you. nice to see you. a quarter of a million dollars. that s an astounding number. 43% of babysitter.com admitted to waiting to start or expand their family until they thought they could afford it. how do you know if you can afford it? i think it s a matter of two things. first, being able to live comfortably you and your spouse, without feeling too stretched. but also being willing to compromise. we heard from a lot of moms in our study that, in fact, once you have a kid you really stop splurging on yourself. it s all about the children. you ve got to be ready about that. two out of three moms there, actually this concern will affect the number of children they re going to have. i was shocked by that. people said we wanted to have three kids but, in fact, we re only going to have two simply because of the cost of raising kids. and by the way, that $250,000, that doesn t include college. now, this term recession generation, what does that mean? it s babies who are born during this economic period. what we re seeing from parents is that we re becoming better, not better but slowly getting there. and we re looking to see if it s going to be like growing up with parents who actually went through the depression, that this generation of kids will, in fact, become more financially responsible. we ve got hope for that. looking at it here, people have to consider these couples, they have to consider if mom is going to have a child and then stay home, you know, how are they going to manage on either a reduced salary or just one salary? and i think pregnancy gives you a really good opportunity to practice that. you ve gotten months. you can essentially say, okay, we re going to bank one entire salary during the pregnancy. we re going to see if we can afford to live on just your salary using your benefits. and by the way, if you can do it during pregnancy then you have that extra cash cushion that you save is a really great way to do it. another way are wednesdays, money 911. a lot of people ask the question about do i save for my retirement first or do i worry about paying for my kids college first. i know you guys say take care of your retirement first. a lot of people are heed that advice. that half, which is not enough. by the way. we want parents to be saving for their retirement because there is no financial aid for retirement and there is financial aid for college. but you know, you re a parent, what happens when you have a baby is you get a big case of the guilt and you feel like i have to save for my kid. and the way that you do both in one move is with a roth ira. you put pony in a roupo money in do it. this is really stressing a lot of folks out. fathers, mothers, grandparents. yep. how do you handle this stress? you talk about it and you do it sooner rather than later. and here s why. when parents fight about money, the more frequently they have money fights each week or each month the more likely they are to actually divorce, which is not only expensive but additionally stressful. so you want to get those out on the table. save money because we know that couples and families that save money rather than build debt actually have stronger marriages. that is the entire key. and we re coming up to back to school when parents are spending a lot. new clothes, books, school supplies. how do they work on saving? a couple of things. there are a lot of states that are having sales tax holidays going back to school savings. do that. look for good deals on the internet before you actually head to the stores. and, by the way, put off that shopping as long as you can. your kids can go back to school in the summer with the clothes they re already in their closet, wearing the sneakers they already own. good advice. jean chatzky, thanks so much. and still ahead, we ve got fun finds that make fun gifts for all ages. right after these messages. good morning! [ where d.c. goes to get away.o busch gardens williamsburg, maybe it s because washington d.c. loves the legendary coasters. or that your entire family will have fun, even the little ones. it could be that water country usa has more of the waves, slides and rides everyone wants. so plan your getaway and come play. you never know who you ll run into. get started at buschgardens.com/dc. now it s time for sara in the city sara heads out on the streets of new york to explore other opportunities. this summer sara strapped on her roller skates and knee pads to join the central park roller dancer. right. knee pads. they are an enthusiastic renowned group with the roller skating community, the central park dance skaters association. every saturday and sunday from april through october they hit the pavement to skate and dance and for one magical weekend i joined their ranks well, sort of. reporter: since 1977, the central park dance skaters association occupied a small slice of central park which they remain inned skater s road. before i joined in in the party on wheels, i got a private lesson to make sure i had what it takes. i m sara. hi. very nice to meet you. today you re going to show me or suit me up to roller skate. get you rolling. down and reporter: lesly lives and breathes roller skating and meets with the group every weekend. first i had to learn moves on solid ground. it s like ballet. almost. not quite. oh, my gosh, you know. reporter: finally i got to try on my four-wheeled wonders. you were married on skates? married on xatsz. how old are you, lezly. 78. you re awesome. reporter: time to work on my technique from starting to stopping. yes. i did it. yes, you did. reporter: and even a few disco moves. yes. great. we re doing it. reporter: i was finally ready to grad weighted from lezly s skate school to the big leagues. i m suited up. ready to roll, baby. reporter: he paired me up with one of the best skate partners in the group. are you going to teach me that move by the end of this? hopefully we ll teach you to spin around. reporter: after a rocky start man down! whou! reporter: we hit our groove. i just love the skid marks. i got the hip part. reporter: and i got to learn more advanced moves. whoa! reporter: i had a few different partners to help me along the way. yeah! reporter: and even better t. i like the feel of it. it s a roller skating place. oh, my god. that guy s shorts are tight. reporter: i caught the roller dancing bug. keep it up, guys! whoa! train coming through. dance, baby, dance, disco inferno you guys know who hoda and kathie lee are? reporter: i invented a few dance moves i don t think these rollerbladers had ever seen before. go sara, go sara! reporter: most importantly, i felt the love. group hug. get in here, lezly. we did it! i m an official roller skater! whew! fun! wow. i was good job, sara. they started out without pads on me. i go, hey no. we need to walk tomorrow. yeah. good for you. everyone should know, an adorable child in our earlier segment, mckenzie, she s fine. she s back in business. all better. mom swooped in and sean and took care of business. that s a mommy s thing. glad she s ak. tomorrow s a big day. a theme show. girl gone latina zumba on the plaza. oh, my gosh. get there. plus, pitbull is in the house. not sure what that means. if you re in the a
