Florida Supreme Court asked to review Marsy's Law ruling shielding police identity

The city of Tallahassee and a consortium of media outlets are seeking review of a recent appeals court decision finding that Marsy’s Law grants privacy protections to on-duty police officers, including those who use lethal force against suspects.
City Attorney Cassandra Jackson announced Tuesday that the city is asking the Florida Supreme Court to review the decision handed down April 6 by the 1st District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee.
“This case is one of great public importance to the state of Florida in its appellate level interpretation of Article 1, Section 16 of the Florida Constitution (Marsy’s Law)," Jackson said in a written statement. "With respect for the court’s opinion and appreciation of the difficult work performed by police officers every day, the decision has far-reaching implications related to public transparency and is deserving of final review by Florida’s highest court.”

Hello and welcome to Wednesday.
Coming soon — There’s not a lot of doubt that the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature — urged by Gov. Ron DeSantis and fueled by the falsehoods about rampant voter fraud — will pass a bill to impose new rules on how Floridians vote.

In a decision that could have sweeping implications in police use-of-force cases, a Florida appellate court has ruled that officers who kill citizens can hide their identity under a measure designed to protect crime victims from violence and harassment.
A three-judge panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal on Tuesday unanimously reversed a lower court decision that had denied on-duty officers protections under Marsy's Law, a provision that has been adopted in at least 12 states, including Florida.
In October, a USA TODAY/ProPublica investigation showed that as police across the nation faced scrutiny over accusations of brutality and systemic racism, law enforcement agencies – particularly in Florida – increasingly were co-opting Marsy's Law to shield the identifies of officers accused of violence.
