child care. here in west virginia, child care for one child private pay costs more than a year's tuition at west virginia university. it is ridiculously expensive and just one more obstacle for people to join the workforce. one example. >> the senators hearing some disappointment, not just if his colleagues in washington, but from his home state. we heard coal miners union encouraging him to pass build back better for the climate provisions in there. do you see him moving on this from your perspective as you communicate, you and others, communicate the needs to the senator? he's not dumb. he's been in politics a long time. he knows to listen to his constituents. >> i think maybe that's the part i'm most disappointed in. you know, one of the biggest struggles has been able to really get senator manchin to hear the people who are benefitting from this, you know from the child tax credit. it is just very difficult task
>> $10 million is being spent on west virginia media targeting joe manchin. you reported on this this morning. the coal miners union is urging him to reconsider on this legislation. is any of that moving the needle? >> you know, for joe manchin, inhis theory of the case, his state of mind, is that no one knows west virginia politics as well as he does. and i think there is a lot of evidence for that. he has been in state government for something like 30 years. he was a popular governor. he got reelected in the state that donald trump won by 40 points. i think he figures and rightfully so, that he knows his home state politics better than everybody and he keeps his own council. while i do think his office and his aides and his allies do see that incoming, i think they leave it to him to make these decisions. i think that at the end of the day, again, he's going to keep his own council and he's going to do what he thinks is best. i will say, i don't think he's going to become a republican. that might be your next question. >> no, it was not.

go right into the states that will be disproportionately affected by the green energy dream and you include them as part of the solution and you invest in them as if your life depended upon it because it does. >> that was democratic presidential candidate kirsten gillibrand on saturday in new hampshire talking about the importance of investing in coal miners. her comments come just days after nearly 600 coal miners were suddenly left without work. and now the coal miners union is inviting the 2020 democratic candidates to come on an underground tour and hear from workers. the union says if democrats want to get back many who have deserted the party in the last several elections, it is coal miners who they need to win over. joining us now with more on that, nbc news correspondent heidi przybyla. heidi, what did you find out? >> hi, mika. this is really unusual. this is the first time that the coal miners have done this.
are loyal trump voters but what you see here is really an opening divide as well between the working coal miners and the coal miners who are rapidly being put out of work and who are being essentially forced in to retirement. according to the coal miners union you are starting to see some cracks among those workers because they're starting to see that no matter the dramatic changes that have been made under trump, they are continuing to lose their jobs and so maybe -- just maybe they're starting to be open to some more of the arguments from democrats about how democrats or any lawmaker frankly can invest more in their communities because what they're seeing is regardless of the regulatory red carpet that's being rolled out, you know, the market's just moving in the opposite direction. they're moving to renewals, solar and natural gas. >> heidi przybyla, thank you
things, he's attacking you, conor lamb, by saying you don't support pension rights, you are not doing enough for pensions. this is a big issue for workers in the district. >> if that's the union leadership misinformation, especially among the coal miners union. i do support trying to save that pension. there's a bill clogged up in congress and i've always supported trying to move that through. union leadership has put out that misinformation over and over. remember this is the same union leadership that supported president obama, who was trying to kill the coal miners, the coal industry and supported hillary clinton, who definitely wanted to kill the coal industry. now they support my point. i just tell the rank-and-file members once again, come out for me. i've always supported you, i've always been with you. >> ed: you mentioned hillary clinton. she gave a speech in the last few days that she set voters in the heartland, voters in the battleground state like pennsylvania went with donald trump because i went with place they were optimistic, diverse, dynamic and moving forward, whereas make america
