this was put into the constitution in order to prevent ex confederates from gaining power again after the civil war, particularly in the southern states. the base at that time, they were less interested in the presidency because you can always go and impeach a president, if you want to. but they wanted to try to make sure that the southern states, if they were brought back into the union, after the civil war was over, would be governed by people who accepted the results of the war, the end of slavery, equal citizenship for african americans. and that is what they are trying to do, to step into the states and make sure that the good people were in charge in the southern states. >> professor by, as you look at it, what would you expect the

country. this time the lie is about the 2020 election. >> again today, as he did friday, mr. biden made threats to democracy a central theme of his remarks. again tonight the question is how is the case he's making being received? joining us two cnn political contributors, former south carolina state lawmakers bakari sellers and former trump campaign adviser david irvine. president biden speaking to black voters in south carolina hitting on this message that his predecessor is a threat to democracy, comparing his supporters to defeated confederates embracing the lost cause. in your view is that a trat which have that will resonate with voters? >> actually i think it will, and i think it's not just the messaging about the lost cause or the confederacy of the civil war, but it's actually the act of meeting voters where they are. i hear my good friend david chuckling in the background but let mow give you a point of personal privilege really quick and teach for one moment. he was at mother of emmanuel ame church where we had one of the

>> yeah, you know, i thought it was actually pretty powerful. it wasn't a frame i had thought of before or heard before, the lost cause. that's -- i grew up in tennessee. some of us are southerners. you know that kind of, we have this lost cause, you look back and you go back over and over again. and it's like a second lost cause is what biden is saying. that the southern confederates were defeated and wouldn't ever admit it. now you have the trump machine defeated and it won't admit it. he's drawing a line between that refusal to deal with reality and the violence of january 6th and the potential violence that could come with this election. for me, i think he's doing a good job trying to get back to his home turf, south carolina, get back to the black base, reminding them of some of the stuff that maybe people have forgotten about and reframing what we're seeing as part of a long tradition of very, very dangerous politics in america.
