>> some of the trains go into the woods, still dangling by a thread over there i-5. upside down train cars over the freeway. when that occurs, they had multiple people at the same time. they did a great job. the traffic rerouted but now, the investigation into how this occurred will be done by the ntsb and state patrol, keeping everybody up-to-date on numbers as we move forward. >> harris: i was trying to crunch the numbers, 78 passengers, five crew members. i understand you had extrication, multiple extrication going on with cars and trucks on the actual freeway. injuries on the ground and injuries on the train.
fire department is they first started showing up and they could start their extrication. thanks to the people who did that in the community. when something bad like this happens it takes everybody to respond to make a good result of something that's actually horrific, but considering when you look at it, it could have been much worse, and we have trains that intersect the freeway and the bridge and plenty of time. we are very grateful that everybody on the road is okay. we're very sorry for the loss of life for the people that are standing around waiting to hear who is deceased and we're very respectful of that, and we want to make sure we don't get anyone else hurt or injured as we move forward. >> how many vehicles on the ground, would you say? >> preliminarily, there were five vehicles on the ground that were on the ground, until they unravel what's down there and find out what else might be going on. the state patrol from here on

anyone else unaccounted for. take a look down here, and you can see just how difficult of a scene this was to get to. there's a steep hill. there's that one car that's just inches away from the river. so a really difficult extrication for the officials that were first on scene here. they actually had to shore up the train, use air pillows, giant air pillows to lift those cars off of some of the victims. so that's just how horrific it was here. we're told that they believe three out of the four deceased were thrown from the train. so witnesses really describing -- one gentleman who was walking his dog out here and saw the aftermath said it is something he will never forget. the investigation now underway, so they're moving this away from a rescue operation, making it a crime scene. the ntsb expected on scene shortly to begin its investigation as well. one thing, alex, we're hearing over and over here from
extrication on the two victims in the car. >> reporter: a scene that shut down i-64 east, causing standstill traffic just before simpsonville's exit. >> that was scott adkins with cnn affiliate wave. the storm hit chicago just in time for today's nfl game at soldier field. it made for some tense moments at our george howell explains now. >> reporter: we watched here in chicago as the storm cells brought with it the heavy rain, the strong winds. and that's what we're left with right now. in fact, the winds were strong enough at one point to delay the football game between the bears and the ravens. we're talking about a packed house. some 60,000 people in soldier field all told to take shelter, to get out of the way of the storm. that is exactly what they did, until about two hours later when the game resumed. just outside of chicago in those

we very plainly heard that -- that we should remain calm. that our tools would now work. and that we would get her out of that vehicle. >> the fire department showed up right after that prayer with fresh equipment and was able to finish the extrication. after getting katie safely into the helicopter, at least a dozen other rescue workers turned around to thank the priest who was nowhere in sight. the highway had been blocked for a quarter of a mile during the hour and a half rescue leaving no bystanders or no parked cars nearby. lins's family and friends are amazed by the story. >> where did this guy come from? we're looking for a priest. whether it was a priest serving as an angel or actually angel that came in wearing the priestly attire. he was an angel to all those and to katie. >> we just would like to find this gentleman. and be able to thank him.
should the u.s. as john mccain has said, and martin indic, one of your former colleagues said, do a limited no fly zone and do stand off action. air strikes. that's something you've been writing about. >> form follows function. and the reality is that the military power is an instrument. it's an instrument to achieve an end game. without a clear sense of what that end game is, we have to correlate quite precisely, or as price prooe sizely as we can, what are we trying tie cheev. if you want to overthrow the current government of syria, the president should declare that is a vital national interest and design a military strategy to do so. but what i don't want to see is america getting stuck with a check on this one. and the reality is, we are uniquely positioned to get stuck with that check. we're coming off the two longest wars in american history. where the standard for victory was never could we win, but when could we leave. and extrication not the metric you want to use to measure the performance of the greatest power on earth. even with hundreds of thousands
you wrote this article recently and say in part, there's a lot that's merurky for syria right now. a messy situation is about to get a whole lot messier. messier in what way? >> well, we have to set this in a broader context. we're coming off the two longest wars in american history. where the standard for victory iraq and afghanistan was never could we win but when could we leave? and extrication is not the kind of metric you want to judge the performance of the greatest power on earth. i think the president is really in a conundrum, really, because there's no single act that he can take right now that would significantly change the military or political arc of this crisis. we have to get away from the notion that there's an immediate solution or game-changers. we've seen the introduction of
