Immunologists map unknown biological machinery to produce memory T cells

Immunologists map unknown biological machinery to produce memory T cells
Immunologists at St. Jude Children s Research Hospital have mapped the previously unknown biological machinery by which the immune system generates T cells that kill bacteria, viruses, and tumor cells.
The findings have multiple implications for how the adaptive immune system responds to infections to generate such memory T cells. The experiments revealed mechanisms that inhibit the development of the long-lived memory T cells that continually renew to protect the body over time.
Blocking these inhibitory mechanisms with pharmacological or genetic approaches could boost protective immunity against infection and cancers.
The researchers also discovered a subtype of memory T cells that they named terminal effector prime cells. Mapping the pathway that controls these cells raises the possibility of manipulating this pathway to enhance the ability of the immune system to kill microbes and cancer c ....

Researchers identify cells responsible for maintenance and regeneration of liver

Researchers identify cells responsible for maintenance and regeneration of liver
While the amazing regenerative power of the liver has been known since ancient times, the cells responsible for maintaining and replenishing the liver have remained a mystery.
Now, research from the Children s Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern (CRI) has identified the cells responsible for liver maintenance and regeneration while also pinpointing where they reside in the liver.
These findings, reported today in
Science, could help scientists answer important questions about liver maintenance, liver damage (such as from fatty liver or alcoholic liver disease), and liver cancer.
The liver performs vital functions, including chemical detoxification, blood protein production, bile excretion, and regulation of energy metabolism. Structurally, the liver is comprised of tissue units called lobules that, when cross-sectioned, resemble honeycombs. ....

Catalent to Acquire Delphi Genetics

Cédric Szpirer, Founder and Executive Director of Delphi Genetics, added, “The complementary activities and adjacent technologies will provide our customers, our employees, and ultimately patients around the world with a solid foundation for new therapeutic solutions in the cell and gene therapy domain.”
Upon completion, all of Delphi’s highly skilled team, including R&D and genetic engineering scientists and technicians, regulatory specialists, and other associated roles will transfer to Catalent’s Cell and Gene Therapy business.
This acquisition fast-tracks Catalent’s U.S. expansion of plasmid capabilities at its Rockville facility. Since acquiring the site in 2019, Catalent has invested to upgrade the facility with the addition of dedicated single-use microbial capacity for plasmid DNA production. Process and analytical development for plasmid DNA are also available on site, and the facility will also offer research- and CGMP-grade plasmids to support its vir ....
