we're learning just a little bit about their lives today. buddy jantoc is among them, a musician who sang, played drums and guitar. ben ma gin is another victim identified, a beloved grandmother. the other names, robert dyckman, virginia dofa, and alfredo g galnado. so far crews have only searched about 38% of the fire zone. so far to go. gloria is on the ground in maui. she's joining us now. you've been on the ground. what is expected to happen today? >> reporter: kate this devastating process you were just describing is going to continue. now we are standing at a checkpoint into lahaina right now. the road behind me is closed.
today, tomorrow, for as long as it takes. >> cnn is on the ground in maui. gloria, the search through the fire zone has proved slow and grueling for the crews that are tasked with this. what does the search look like? >> reporter: well, it's devastating for anyone who has to do it, kate, and we've heard from officials who are in charge of that search, in fact, we have heard from the local police chief who has been down to ground zero, the disaster where the fire was worse, where most of the victims have been found so far, and he described it as a catastrophic scene. i also just want to mention something that has really stuck with me over the past several days, the governor compared the zone that is currently being surged to searching through the rubble of a war zone or searching through the rubble
that was left behind at ground zero after the 9/11 attacks. that's what we're talking about here. that's what 40 cadaver dogs are currently searching through in order to find any possible human remains. now, the governor has also told us that there's evidence that there were young children found in that area. he described coming upon a car that had two people in the front and two small bodies in the bock. he was saying that that was likely a family that was trying to get out and didn't make it out. now, i'm standing just outside of the checkpoint here into lahaina, and just in an hour or so it's going to open up, allowing residents, workers and volunteers into the town for the day. >> gloria, as you mentioned, especially when you put, as the governor has described what it looks like, like sifting through
special place that is home, and lahaina has such a rich history and culture. right now we're really focused on the families and loved ones and then we'll look to recovery and rebuilding. right now it is a balance, it is about respect. >> reporter: so that is the key, stay away from areas where you do not need to be. there's no need to be near lahaina if you have nothing to do here. the rest of the island could use the help. it is an important part of the economic engine of the state. for now, this area needs to be kept for recovery and the work that's happening here. >> gloria, thank you for being there. >> the awful truth is the fires aren't finished in other parts of hawaii and lahaina. not the only place hit by wildfires. in the upcountry, crews are still putting out hot spots in kula. cnn's bill weir takes us there.
including donald trump, pre-giuliani, sydney, powell and others are included in gloria? >> after reading, this there is no, do you, know the question we have all been asking is, did trump direct this? and anyway? or were people doing this on trump's behalf because they really thought that he had won the election. over, and over, and over again. we see phone calls that the president made. and every time, for example, a phone call, which we knew about, to the georgia governor brian kemp. and the, this indictment that says solicited, requested and importuned, kemp called the special counsel of the georgia assembly. the phrase that is used over and over again is that this was an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy. >> yes and that's interesting, because there are so many counts here in which donald trump have about lying. and so this we have known many

nearly a week after deadly wildfires broke out on maui, officials and survivors are in recovery mode right now. they're searching for missing victims, beginning to rebuild and trying to figure out what went so horribly wrong. on the ground in hawaii, what's the latest, gloria? >> reporter: first let me tell you where i'm standing. we're about 40 miles from lahaina, which was absolutely devastated by the wildfires. here there are hotspots that are still burning. take a look at this home behind me. all that is left standing is the chimney. i spoke to the owners of that house, they told me they are just in survival mode. they're doing okay, their
that they can't get to lahaina, where they want to bring supplies and help out with the efforts there. the situation is very active here. the power company is up the hill, trying to get the power back on. but just in the last ten minutes, there is a woman who came down saying there is another fire burning just beyond the hill. the fire department just pulled up a couple of minutes. it just gives you a sense of how much the situation is still not only ongoing but people can't start to clean up and recover because the fires are still burning. a lot of frustration here, a lot of hurt but still somehow in all of that, positive attitude, positive spirit, the desire to help out neighbors and just come together in what really is an incredible amount of tragedy and great loss. >> a horrible situation indeed. gloria, thank you very much. for more on this story i'm joined by the hawaii governor, josh green. governor, thank you so much for joining us. our hearts go out to all the folks in hawaii right now.
