'Nomadland' wins best picture at a social distanced Oscars

Chloe Zhao's “Nomadland,” a wistful portrait of itinerant lives on open roads across the American West, won best picture Sunday at the 93rd Academy Awards, where the China-born Zhao also became just the second woman to win best director, and the first woman of colour.
The “Nomadland” victory, while widely expected, nevertheless capped the extraordinary rise of Zhao, a lyrical filmmaker whose winning film is just her third, and which - with a budget less than $5 million and featuring a cast populated by non-professional actors -- ranks as one of the most modest-sized movies to win Hollywood's top honour. Zhao's next film, Marvel's “Eternals,” has a budget approximately 40 times that of “Nomadland.” Only Kathryn Bigelow, 11 years ago for “The Hurt Locker,” had previously won best director.

2021 Oscars highlight women and the racial justice movement


Considering that many movie theaters have been closed for over a year, it has been difficult to see new films. However, the Oscars were still held to honor those in the film industry. There were a total of 115 nominees ranging from 23 different categories,  spanning from Best Visual Effects, Best Original Screenplay, to Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony was held in two different locations in Los Angeles, CA, the Dolby Theater and the Union Station. 
The ceremony is typically held in February but it was pushed back by two months due to the pandemic. The awards honored movies released in 2020 as well as the first few months of 2021. The nominees for the Oscars were announced on March 15, 2021, by Nick Jonas and his wife Priyanka Chopra.

A live audience at the 93rd Academy Awards is unable to bring it back to life — or relevancy

As everyone is already painfully aware of at this point, 2020 was a depressing year that changed how we all consumed entertainment media. Streaming became the primary source of escapist entertainment as theaters closed down. As that year’s awards season loomed, audiences were given empty auditoriums with Zoom acceptance speeches. Comedy attempted to alleviate any awkwardness but mostly fell flat as a result. With the COVID-19 vaccine becoming more widely circulated, this year’s Academy Awards was able to be held indoors with a live audience, albeit greatly reduced. Unfortunately, a live audience hardly made the show any more lively.

"I played with dolls until it was weird. You know like when you’re supposed to stop? I didn’t stop. I had to hide them under the bed because I was still doing their hair," she says, laughing in her car. Neal was on the phone with
Allure during a four-hour drive from Atlanta, Georgia to Hinesville, situated on the state’s coastal plain. "It's funny 'cause I feel like that's what I do for a living now with the wigs, you know? Somehow I made a job out of doing doll hair," she adds.

We wouldn’t blame anyone for a lack of wholehearted celebration during this award seasons, especially when considering last year’s reckoning on racial justice and the not-too-distant #MeToo and #OscarsSoWhite movements still ring true. But hear us out…
The 93rd Academy Awards — a postponed mélange of extravagance and entitlement, placed against a backdrop of national and economic crisis — might be a fruitful test for establishing lasting and sustainable political reform.

th Street Oakland, California is excited to announce that Rev. Dr. Rosalynn Brookins, senior pastor was awarded the auspicious Jarena Lee Award.
Jarena Lee (February 11, 1783 – February 3, 1864) was the first female authorized to preach in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. History shows she was born into a free, Black family. Lee saw the immorality of slavery.  At a time period of segregation and inequity, A.M.E. Church founder Richard Allen gave her the opportunity for her voice to be heard despite the fact that there were no provisions for a female to preach. Rev. Lee showed determination to let her voice be heard and to share the holy word, despite racial and gender issues.  Further, Lee was the first African American woman to have an autobiography published in the United States.
