New library policy would eliminate fines

Library board members talked about eliminating fines, but not fees when they met Monday night.
The Keene Memorial advisory board voted to send a revised policy manual to the Fremont City Council for approval in April.
Removed from the revised manual is a section regarding fines for overdue materials.
Laura England-Biggs, interim library director, said libraries nationally — approximately 200 across the country — and internationally are following a trend of going fine free.
Currently, fines are 5 cents a day for children’s materials and 15 cents a day for adult and young adult materials at Keene.
“The fines we collect on an annual basis are less than a $5,000 revenue stream in a $1.3 million-dollar budget,” England-Biggs said. “We aren’t going to miss that income, but it will do a lot of goodwill in the community if we can say, ‘Hey, we’re not going to charge you that 50 cents, just bring it back.’”

Pentagon Tries Jetpacks for Air Mobility: DARPA Testing New Military Technologies

Pentagon Tries Jetpacks for Air Mobility: DARPA Testing New Military Technologies
The U.S. Defense Department is taking their security up-to-date. This possibly means strapping jetpacks to their special forces, with this technology being called the "Portable Personal Air Mobility System."
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) offers up to $1.5 million in development costs for research proposals involving "air mobility" systems. A total of $225,000 will be used in the study phase of this program. If the proposals pass this phase, they will undergo ground and flight tests to check field performance. The agency invites any innovative research concepts on the technical domain of improving aerial operations.

The Batman vs. the Penguin ride proposed for Universal
As part of the development process, designers at Disney and Universal are frequently tasked with designing attraction concepts that are never realized. This leaves behind a trail littered with thousands of unique concepts, including some that are extremely detailed and nearly shovel-ready. Now a website, Best Kid Stuff, has imagined what five of those never-realized attractions would look like in real life.
The realistic-looking 3D renderings are our best look yet at these long-shelved attractions. The group gathered public documents and information from the designers involved with the attractions, then synthesized this information into a single hyper-real image of what each attraction may have looked like.
