>> that's right, wolf, our colleague katelyn polantz learned that grand jury is active, making inquiries of the witness, gathering evidence. it's not unheard of for a grand jury to continue investigating even after charges are brought. we know from our own reporting that there were really significant lines of inquiry that did not show up in the indictment. for example, there were a lot of questions about whether there were gaps in surveillance footage, also a lot of questions about how records were stored at bedminster. it is certainly possible that there could be additional ka charges in a superceding indictment. >> significant indeed. kaitlyn, how is the trump team, i know krour doing a lot of reporting on this, actually thinking about the flurry of activity ongoing in the miami grand jury right now, and susan wiles meeting with these federal prosecutors? >> it's not totally clear to me that trump's team, trump or his legal team were still aware that there was continued activity in the miami grand jury. obviously that could potential be of consequence.

reporting on the special counsel probe into january 6th. sources tell us that jack smith is now focused on the fake elector scheme carried out by donald trump's allies after he lost the 2020 election. prosecutors have secured testimony from republicans tied to that plot in exchange for limited immunity. let's get right to it with a pair of justice reporters as well as defense attorney and former federal prosecutor. thank you all for being with us. kaitlyn, first to you. what did you dig up about this angle in the january 6th investigation? >> well, we were able to pick up on a lot of grand jury activity in the last two weeks and particularly focused on the fake electors. the people donald trump used within the republican party to sign certificates saying that he won states that he actually didn't. this goes back to last week. there are two electors that testified in washington, d.c.

chris christies, who we'll see this week, and maybe even mike pence, who this weekend kind of debuted this almost strident, you know, kind of argument that really is about an anti-trump approach to politics. she might be trying to carve out a slightly different lane here. >> yeah, she is. as you said at the beginning just now, she's going back to the nikki haley who became a member of the south carolina legislature and then, of course, governor, and kaitlyn, that is the kind of politician -- i mean bakari was making fun of me for using the word focusy because that's what they do in south carolina, but it's not necessarily what they see in iowa or other parts of the country. >> david mentioned one of those moments that i do want to replay from the town hall. nikki haley was being asked about her former boss, who of course as you all noted, she did work for him as his u.s.

comments. what do the facts say about this? >> kaitlyn, governor halely's claim that crime is at an all-time high is not accurate. it has fallen steadily with a few short upticks over the last three decades. if you do a graph, you'd see a steep line downward from those early 90s and then a recent flattening out with some ups and downs. we do not have precise numbers for the present day or even last year. crime data takes time to come in. but every expert on this subject will tell you that we're not even close to the numbers of the bad old days of three decades ago. the country's violent crime rate in 1992, for example, was 758 per 100,000 people. in 2020, it was under 400 violent crimes per 100,000 people. 2021 data is a bit dicey but looks roughly similar. during the town hall, i texted with a crime analyst named jeff asher and he confirmed crime has fallen steadily over the last few decades. he said, quote, the nation did experience a historically large increase in murder in 2020.
