legislators do your job and then president obama will veto it or sign it. >> jamie: karen, you get the last word. what are your thoughts? >> if president obama is serious, we'll see meetings with mitch mcconnell and the white house. this is the only way it will get done if they do it together. this is a waiting game. he will hope that republicans do it first. this is political. we have a presidential and big senate races coming up. that is what at the end of the day this will be held hostage to. >> jamie: thank you, both. >> thanks. >> jamie: eric? >> eric: almost four years to the date after his disappearance there are new signs that former f.b.i. agent robert levinson could be live. he vanished while visiting iranian island and new evidence is suggesting he is being held in southwest asia, perhaps afghanistan or pakistan. joining us is christopher

g.o.p. will agree when they don't know the specifics? the democratic party chair, that's what he was. and karen, former national congressional committee director. great to see both of you. thank you. >> thank you. >> jamie: dick, how specific was the president and what does the g.o.p. need to know to decide if they like what the president has to say and will agree? >> the president has made it clear that he is willing to deal with moderate republican contingency in the house and senate. the problem is even the republicans, moderates, speaker of the house are having to dance to the tune of the tea party. they want $160 billion in cuts. they say if you adopt the cuts you'd put 70,000 government workers out of work to rip to 250 to 350,000 private sectors jobs.

>> mary? >> fighting for our rights. >> mary lou, what do you have to say? >> i think he is kind of exaggerating a little. a lot of us are cleaning ourselves up in the capitol bathroom. if we are allowed the access the people of wisconsin are supposed to get where we can come and go through that building, maybe we could go home and take some showers. believe me, if he smells anything, it is not because we want to smell bad, it is because they're shutting down the capitol and not allowing the capitol to be open as it legally is supposed to be. >> karen, how does it make you feel to be called a slob by one of the senators in the building? >> well, i think he's really mistaken by trying to marginalize the people in that

come-from-behind win. we're just learning that i-95 is reopened. what a difference a couple of months make. back in november president obama and his party suffered a midterm shellacking. but fast forward to today and 2012 is not looking like a gop shoe in anymore. three seemingly strong prospects will be likely sitting out the election. new jersey governor chris christie and south dakota senator john boom. >> my focus is going to be on the work we're doing here, there are going to be a lot of good candidates who are going to be running for the presidency and it's going to be a good opportunity for republicans to mix it up out there and get a chance to go against the president. >> here to discuss some say maybe president's obama's unbeatability. we have got andy bar, reporter for politico. karen, let me start with you,

and facebooking will be underestimated at the peril of outside political influences. if these young 21st century revolutionaries had the stuff to topple dictators of decades in the matter of day, then they have the stuff to fend off bin laden and ahmadinejad. karen says unfortunately islam will grow. david says libya is going through accru crews bell of fir which could give them a great deal more traction. we have to help them otherwise we might lose them like we lost iran. can we afford the cost of these countries becoming like iran. and ginger says there is great diversity in the middle east. what happens in egypt will be

soon as we can. as the battle between republican governors and state employees continues to heat up, now jumping from state to state like a brush fire, the very future of labor unions could hang in the balance. protesters turned out in washington, d.c. today in support of those demonstrating in wisconsin and elsewhere. so the issue is short, a spillover into the federal budget fight when lawmakers return next week and try to keep the government open for business. tarn finney is an msnbc political analyst and former communicates director and worked at the clinton white house the last time we had a government shutdown in '95. robert is the washington bureau chief for comcast network and a former adviser to the bush/cheney campaign of 2004. karen, as i just said, this is kind of like a brush fire we're seeing jump around. how is this going to play back in washington entirely for president obama? >> number one, it shouldn't take anybody by surprise that, oh,

gee, these are republican governors inventing crises so that they can go after labor unions. i mean, this has been kind of a grudge match between republicans for a long time. i think part of the way it plays back here though, there's a larger issue in terms of the abuse of power. you've got these governors basically saying, gee, in order to balance our budget, we have to take away your rights. and on some fundamental level, that just -- people don't like that. "usa today" had a great poll out today. i think ultimately, back here, we stand with labor. but also stand with working people. >> robert, i want to talk to you how much of this mess is created in part by the unions that are bargaining for the pensions and other benefits with states that simply cannot afford and wouldn't really they be put in this situation if the unions were then defeated. so explain to us how the states are coming back. karen is saying this is an old stalemate, so to speak.
