>> thank you, jennifer rodgers. john? >> we know at this point that donald trump is going to jail. he is. he is going to the jail in fulton county, but he is not going to the first republican presidential debate. he announced he not going to attend the milwaukee event wednesday night. and kristen holmes is going to join us now with that announcement. kristen? >> we had antic tis pate -- anticipated this, and he had been looking to the polls and rallying cries from the supporters, and now i have gotten off of the phone with several trump advisers who say that it did really play a big part of the decision of not participating in the debate and looking at the commanding lead. even if there is a breakout star, an one of the candidates comes forward and does a good job, and has a viral moment as usual in the debates that they
analyst elliot williams, cnn political commentator kristin sole advertise anderson, cnn anchor and chief legal paul begala. donald trump's legal problems colliding with the 2024 race. kristen, what do you make of the fact that he's not going to be at the debate? we didn't expect him to be there, but is it debates, plural? do you think he means all the debates or just the republican ones? >> i think it will depend how his poll numbers look after he misses this first one. i don't think missing the first one is going to do huge damage to him. what i'm sort of hearing from some republican voters and focus groups is effectively that donald trump as the reigning champion kind of gets a first-round bye. you bring people into the debate, hash it out. the next debate, once the threshold is a little higher, maybe donald trump could expected to come in. if he's planning to not show up to any debates, that's a
not showing up was better than the risk of actually showing up. the risk of showing up was greater and that was because of two things, one is you look at if this was going to be some kind of moment for another candidate, you look and see if someone could seize the limelight, get some traction, have a breakout moment. they believe that looking at those recent poll numbers that even if that were to happen, which it could, often does in these debates, that it wouldn't make up the gap there with the trump lead. the other part of this is trump as a punching bag. they believe if he is not on the stage it's harder to use him as a punching bag. i've talked to a number of other political campaign advisers who talked about how their candidates were preparing, saying they were preparing to try and get some of that limelight for themselves, to have their own breakout moments as i noted and the idea is how can they differentiate themselves from former president trump. and whether or not trump is still going to end up taking all all the oxygen on the stage even though he is not there. >> kristen, thank you so much.
hitting donald trump, so where does he pivot to when the debate happens, and that is what we are all waiting to see how this plays out. >> any idea of what he is going to be doing the debate of the night itself, and live tweeting or live xing? is he is going to be live xing in the debate, kristen? >> right now, nothing on the calendar, but i don't know about xing, and we will be seeing the truth social posts, and we have reported that trump expects to air an interview with former fox news host tucker carlson on wednesday, and unclear when it is taped, and not taped wednesday and whether or not that has happened, and we are looking into that as to getting the feel of exactly what he is going to be saying as the debate is happening. >> the guy loving to watch tv, so you can imagine he is going to be watching. >> yes. >> and xing, is that what we call it? >> that what i am going with. >> i learn new things from you, john. okay. still to come, 911 systems
absolutely. but i think that the trump lawyers to make a really good point. when you talk about the very first production of documents being 11 million pages, the trial date pushed out a year and a half makes sense but again the court is not going to allow that. what i think she is going to say is, look, mr. trump, it's time for you to hire more attorneys if you cannot handle the production. and if you cannot allow that to be part of your defense. and so she is absolutely going to force that be wrapped up before the end of next summer, absolutely. >> yeah, that's understandable. nbc news is reporting the trump plans to surrender late next week. funny will -- fani willis once all of them by next friday with agreements to come september 5th. any potential trial date of next march for the next year. but kristen, these surrenders will happen in a heightened threat environment. there's one woman charged with threatening d.c. judge tanya chutkan. jay willis is facing racist abuse after the indictments, and the new today, the fbi's
