humanitarian crisis. and everything should be done to get them back as soon as possible. thank you very much. that is all in on this wednesday night. alex wagner tonight starts right now. good evening, alex. 250 days, just unbelievable this is where we are. thank you, my friend, as always. so i want to start with a story that in any other universe would have absolutely nothing to do with politics or anything even approximating controversy. the kind of news we all used to read or hear and accept. but in the post-trump era, this kind of news has become a sort of conservative litmus test with potentially disastrous consequences for the health and the well being of thousands and thousands of americans. i am talking about bird flu. i know. stay with me here. if you have been following the news recently, you may have seen that the u.s. is currently dealing with an outbreak of bird flu. bird flu has spread to at least 80 cattle herds across over five states. and because of that outbreak, the fda, the food and drug administration, has issued guidance for how to stay safe and avoid exposure, including warning americans against drinking raw milk. that s because raw milk has the potential to spread animal borne diseases from one species to another. this is pretty straight forward, noncontroversial scientific advice, don t drink raw milk. it s noncontroversial except if you are a conservative who follows the influential, pro-trump youth organization turning points usa. milk is good for you, but here s what the american dairy farmers association or whatever isn t going to tell you is that that pasture rised milk crap, you might as well be drinking water. it does nothing. it s not healthy. ideally, you need to be drinking raw milk. that was alex clark a turning point usa host, and one of the chief proponents of drinking raw milk. miss clark is such a raw milk enthusiast she tells her followers to drink raw milk while pregnant, something that you absolutely not do under any circumstances. and in response to the fda s warning about drinking raw milk during a bird flu outbreak, alex clark told her nearly 200,000 followers on social media, f the fda, legalize raw milk. this issue so animates conservatives that turning point usa is currently selling $35 t-shirts on their website promoting raw milk. now, if this seems like an echo of the anti-vax, anti-fauci, anti-science movement embraced by a ton of conservatives and therefore put a lot of that put a lot of this country at risk, well that is because it is. it is precisely the kind of extreme, own the libs, reality be position that is a hall mark of turning point usa under charlie kirk. charlie kirk and turning point usa have been an influential part of maga land since donald trump was elected in 2016. in recent year, kirk and his organization have become more outspoken about their beliefs, including kirk s embrace of christian nationalism. in addition to running what appears to be a raw milk propaganda outfit, charlie kirk is also a supporter of something known as the seven mountains mandate a philosophy that calls for conservative christians to take over the government. and kirk has started speaking openly about how he wants donald trump to be the champion of that cause. finally, we have a president that understands the seven mountains of cultural influence. finally we have a president that understands the significance of standing, yes, i m going to use a term, in solidarity with the grassroots activists of our country. across the republican party, christian conservatives are becoming more and more emboldened about making america a christian nation under trump, even as trump himself continues to exhibit some very unchristian behavior on a near daily basis. this was donald trump a week ago at a campaign event inside a phoenix mega church. so they come up with this order i won t say it because i don t like using the word [ bleep ] in front of these beautiful children, so i won t say it. i will not say it. but this thing allows millions of people bleep [ bleep ] donald trump swearing in a house of god and then getting the crowd to swear with him in front of children. we ve seen the same thing from trump s allies. here was rudy giuliani speaking at the pro-trump christian reawaken tour just last week. i ve got two prosecutors, fani the i m sorry. fani willis. fani. it s not fanny, and i m not calling her fani. i could drop the part if she d quit and go away. classy. all of this is part of trump s unspoken agreement with the christian far right. they let trump and his allies break the rules and be vulgar and be blasphemous with the expectation that they will refashion american life according to their christian values. may not be a bad bet either. here was trump just this week speaking to a conservative christian organization that believes all abortion is, quote, child sacrifice. you re going to make a comeback like just about no other group. i know what s happening. i know where you re coming from and where you re going. and i ll be with you side by side. you re going to make a comeback and i ll be with you side by side. even as donald trump refuses to give straight answers about where he stands on things like a national abortion ban or contraception, conservative christian groups understand what trump will do for them. it s not that much of a mystery. and part of their confidence here that an extreme christian nationalist agenda is within their grasp, part of their confidence is because these groups don t have to rely on just trump alone. they can count on trump s most powerful ally in the fight for christian dominion, the conservative majority of on the united states supreme court. just this week we heard supreme court justice samuel alito tell a progressive activist that he believes we need to return america to a place of godliness. as elizabeth and lisa write in a new analysis for the new york time, while justice alito is hardly openly championing these views, he is embracing language and symbolism that line up with a much broader movement pushing back against the declining power of christianity as a majority religion in america. the movement s rise has been evident across the country since mr. trump lost re-election in 2020. justice alito and his fellow conservative justices have already delivered for christian right with their dobbs decision, striking down roe v. wade, and soon they will have a chance to do so again. the supreme court is about to rule on two major cases of considerable significance to the christian right. one will determine whether access to the most common form of abortion in this country is significantly restricted or not and another will determine whether doctors in emergency rooms can deny pregnant women medically necessary abortions. how the court rules on these issues could tell us just how much power the christian nationalist movement has gained in this country and how close they are to victory. joining me now are lisa, the national political correspondent for the new york times , she is also the author of the fall of roe: the rise of new america, and with me is mark joseph stern, senior writer who covers the courts and law at slater mag sooeven. thank you both for joining me. lisa, let me start with the piece you have out today in the times. an array of conservative, including anti-abortion activists, church leader, and conservative state legislators has openly embraced the idea that american democracy needs to be grounded in christian values and guarded against the rise of secular culture. i don t think it s an exaggeration to suggest that strain of conservatism now seems to dominate the supreme court as well. do you think that s far off? look, part of what we document in our book, the fall of roe and the rise of a new america, is that latter part of the title, the rise of a new america. what that is about is the radicalization of conservative christians. and we ve seen some of that cooling out of these tapes from the court, but you know, i wanted to draw your viewers attention to another story today, which was that the southern baptist convention, which represents the largest protestant denomination in the country, 13 million church goer, came out and said they oppose ivf. this is a fairly radical statement for that group, and we re seeing this return to these christian conservative cultural values from the churches all the way up to alito s statements at the court. so i do think what we re watching is this shift in american power. we don t know where it s going to go, but we have a template for success for this movement, and that, of course, is the fall of roe. and how that network of conservative christian activists and lawyers were able to take down that legal precedent may be a way that they can then move on to tackle these other things they are opposed to like, as we learned today, ivf. yeah, i mean, i do when we talk about shifting the window, moving the goal post on the field, it feels like the activists on the far right are signalling to the alitos of the world, this is where we re at, see if you get here. mark, i want to talk about alito s evolution here, because he wasn t always either this explicit or radicalized when he joined the court. can you talk about his progression to where he is now? yeah, i think a crude but accurate term to describe alito is maga pilled. during donald trump s rise and presidency, alito really let his christian nationalist flag fly and xan to embrace not only the rhetoric but also the substance of this far right christian supremacy and this idea that christianity is rooted in the constitution, that we are a christian nation, and that courts have some kind of obligation to protect and, indeed, elevate christianity above not just other religions but above secular society. and he went on a little bit of a talking tour earlier this decade where he decried the new moral code of secularism that promoted reproductive freedom and lgbtq equality and said that it was an existential threat to christianity. and all of this is reflected very much in his decisions, decisions like one a few years ago where he tried to let pharmacists deny plan b to patients to whom it was prescribed. not, you know, any kind of actual abortion drug but just plan b. and decisions like hobby lobby where he s allowed corporations to restrict employee s access to birth control. and these abortion cases, most notably dobbs as lisa documented, sam alito was always going to be the man to write that opinion overruling roe v. wade. in the coming days and weeks, we re going to get these decisions on abortion, especially involving the abortion pill. and i think alito is quite likely to stick his neck out in that decision and write about how he believes medication abortion is unlawful under existing federal law, under the comstock act of 1873. this is a radicalized justice, very much maximizing his impact by staking out the positions that activists in the grassroots want him to take, legitimizing them and shifting the window and eventually, he hope, transforming them into the law of the land. yeah, i mean, it s quite obvious that the dna of the christian conservative warrior class has imprinted itself upon the supreme court, but lisa, when we talk about the relationship in politics between, for example, donald trump and his pro-maga coalition and the conservative christian warrior class, i wond every if trumpism hasn t imprinted on them. i m thinking about those two pieces of sound where donald trump is in a church, a big church, and the call and response is the word bs. it s a family program, so i m not going to say the actual word. and rudy giuliani is calling taney willis, the d.a. the fulton county, one of the most vulgar things you can call a woman, with distinct racist undertones. this seems to be a new brand of, i guess, christianity, if you want to call it that, in the age of trump. yeah, look, the church has changed politics. but politics has changed the church too. and church, especially conservative evangelical and catholic church, have grown so much more political. as we show in our book the fall of roe, they made this deal with president trump. he promised them in 2016 in iowa christianity will have power, and conservative christians jumped on the trump train, and it ended up being a bullet train for them. they got three justices on the supreme court, and the deal was set. and now they ve been with him for eight years, and it doesn t for conservative christians, they re with him. he can moderate his tone on abortion, say he wouldn t sign a 15-week federal ban, and they re still probably going to stick with him. they are fully bought in and part of this maga movement, and the two are operating together. now, you know, donald trump is in a different position, because the politics of abortion have changed so radically. he senses the toxicity there, which is why you ve seen him come out and say it should be returned to the state, that he supports exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother, so that dance has gotten more complicated for him politically, but there s not a sense that he s worried about losing this group that s really become a central core of his movement and his base of support. well, yeah, and i i mean, one wonder where is the guardrails are in any of it. i mean, the republican party has effectively pledged fealty to everything trump represents, christian warrior class and all, and then on the supreme court, mark, how much of a counterweight is someone like john roberts of brett kavanaugh, does the attempt at counterweighing happen on the supreme court? they are a very feeble counterweight when they choose to be one at all. all three of trump s appointees generally vote in lock step with what the republican party wants. trump has, of course, taken over the party, so it is very much his court. and i think it s really disturbing, especially, to look at some of these decisions that do involve extreme circumstances of tragic medical mishaps where wrim in dire of need of abortion, right, this is one of the big cases this term. states are saying these women cannot get abortions that they have to get sepsis, they have to begin hemorrhaging, they have to be dying before they can get abortions. well, republican politicians lined up to agree with those laws and to support those laws of the supreme court you had a ton of republican state attorneys general and republican governors lining up to say we do think woman should be forced to the brink of death before they can get emergency abortions. i think the supreme court will likely agree with them and continue to force these women into these horrible circumstances. and trump is savvy enough not to say anything at it, because he knows he s got his foot soldiers in the judiciary doing the work for him. he s got his guys on the bench who are ready to uphold the most draconian abortion bans imaginable, and he doesn t have to say anything. and just by remaining silent and not speaking out and condemning these ban, he knows he can keep the christian right very much on his side. and that is the whole genius of the strategy behind capturing the courts. you get these justices and judges on the bench for decades, they will do your bidding, they will uphold your extreme law, they will uphold your draconian policies, and most voter, unfortunately, don t draw those lines between the judges and the presidents that appointed them and the parties those presidents belong to, so they get away with this stuff. that s the story of trumpism in the judiciary. a stop the steal movement and neither was my wife. she did not fly it to associate herself with that or any other group. but audio of martha-ann alito released this week by undercover progressive activist lauren windsor paints a decidedly different picture of mrs. alito s flag collection and why she flew them. you know what i want. i want a sacred heart of jesus flag, because i have to look across the lagoon at the pride flag for the next month. exactly. and he s like, oh, please don t put up flag. i said, i won t do it, because i m deferring to you. but when you are free of this nonsense, i m putting it up, and i m going to send them a message every day. maybe every week i ll be changing the flags. they ll be all kinds. i made a flag in my head. this is how i satisfy myself. i made a flag. it s white and has yellow and orange flames around it. and in the mid sl the word vergagna. in italian it means shame. joining me now is emily, the former neighbor of supreme court justice samuel alito. emily, thank you for joining us tonight. i m eager to hear your reaction to this audio that was released. and we played that specific clip there because it really sounds like mrs. alito is intentional when she flies these flags and that there is absolutely a political point of view she is trying to communicate. what did you make of that audio? absolutely. well, fist of all, thank you so much for having me tonight. it s a pleasure to be here. and to hear her talk about the flags in that way just solidifies what we all know is that they re meant to display a particular message. she mentions the being upset by the pride flag and wanting to fly a sacred heart of jesus flag. well, that flag specifically means anti-lgbtq, anti-pride, so it s very clear what she s doing with the flag. and that just proves us all right that in his statement he s lying where he says we didn t have any reasoning behind it. we don t know what it mean, et cetera. yeah, well, she wasn t trying to be part of a movement or group. i think that that s definitely questionable given fact that she s absolutely flying these flags in response to certain groups. yes, yes. emily, i got to ask you, because she s so animated when she talks about this flag she d like to make that says vergogna, which means shame in italian, it brought back to mind your account of the alitos, according to the new york times , when mrs. alito confronted you, you said something like how dare you behave this way. you ve been harassing us over signs. you represent the highest court in the land. shame on you. the concept of shame really seems to animate her, and i wonder if you could talk more about your interaction with her when the word shame and the concept of shame was discussed. yes. well, that so that interaction, the one that happened on february 15th, the one that they re using as an excuse for why they flew the upside down american flag, which we know doesn t make sense because the flag was up weeks before that. what do i make of it? it s just it was such an intense interaction, and it was about the third time that this has happened, each time escalating more and more. and yeah, i meant it, shame on you for behaving this way. because you do represent the highest court in the land. and that was more intended towards him who was there as well and did not step in. can you talk a little bit about the relationship between the alitos, as you saw it. i mean, he was present for some of these interactions, if you want to call that, and i was there s part of the undercover interview or the undercover audio that we heard where martha-ann alito talks about her plan for gaining seeking justice for all that has befallen her and her husband. let s take a listen to that sound. it s okay because if they come back to me, i ll get them. i m going to be liberated, and i m going to get them. what do you mean by get them? there s a five-year defamation statute of limitations. i don t know who you mean. the media. so martha-ann alito has a plan here. she s mapped it out, five-year statute of limitations for defamation. the question is, is that justice alito s plan? and that begs the question, what is the relationship between these two people, to you think what she says is tacitly endorsed by him, or is that overestimating, you know, her import in terms of a family strategy? yes. you know, i don t think it s for me or anybody else to say that or to pass any judgement on their relationship. all i witnessed was her, you know, behaving in that way and him not stepping in. and what i really just want to point out is that there s no way that he didn t know those flags were flying at his house. and in those same recordings, in his own words he is unable to be impartial. he says that there are two sides and one side must win and he s basically saying that he sits on one side and he says that he can t negotiate with the other side. he can t split the difference, as he put it. and that is a giant red flag. and at this point, we ve moved past the idea of him just recusing and we ve reached the point in the general consensus that it must be removal at this point. i think we re a ways from that, but i do, i mean, i have to ask you, because this is a woman who verbally there were verbal confrontations, i believe she spat at your car at one point. yeah. there s a point in this audio where she says i m german from germany, my heritage is german, you come after me, i m going to give it back to you. in the context of these interactions with her, how did you hear that part of the audio? i think as most people who heard it it was absolutely chilling. and terrifying that people in such a high position of power are saying such threatening and scary things. now, i can t presume to know what she meant by that, but i think a lot of people are assuming kind of the same things. and none of it is good. and we really need to do something to hold this court accountable. this is mostly about his inability to be impartial, and that is his bare minimum job description, and he has said on tape that he can t do that. emily baden, at the center of a that president biden s own son was convicted yesterday of three gun felony charges brought by the federal government in a case that was heard by a trump-appointed judge and decided upon by a jury of biden s peers, but that didn t stop them. this afternoon house republicans fanned the flame of a weaponized government conspiracy by voting to hold attorney general merrick garland in contempt of congress. the alleged reason for the contempt vote was the justice department s refusal to comply with a congressional subpoena to hand over audio tapes of an interview president biden did with special counsel robert hur. now, to be clear, the justice department has already released a full transcript of that interview, and officials argue that releasing the audio could endanger future investigations. but refusing to comply with a congressional subpoena, hmm, republicans managed to be outraged about that despite the fact that multiple republicans, including congressman jim jordan, who is leading the fight here against merrick garland, multiple republicans have literally defied congressional subpoenas themselves. when speaker of the house mike johnson was asked about that hypocrisy today, this was his response. you talk about apples to oranges, there couldn t be a more clear contrast between that and what we re talking about here. hmm, joining me now is dan pfeiffer, former senior advisor to president obama and cohost of pod save america. thank you for being here. i don t know, is it an apples to oranges comparison or an apples to apples comparison. it seems pretty apples to apples to me. you have members of congress, someone refusing to comply with a subpoena from congress, so yeah, it s apples to apples. the reality is that the headline merrick garland held in contempt of congress is a big, juicy headline for republicans to make hay over. and i wonder how you think democrats and people interested in preserving, i don t know, some shred of democracy, can answer that with a fairly nuanced discussion about subpoenas and why the hur audio would not make sense for future prosecutions. i don t think we have to get into the details of that. that s the conversation they want us to have. the conversation they don t want to have is why republican plans would do nothing to lower prices or higher wages. what they are planning on doing is how they can pass a tax cut for corporations and the wealthy. it will add $3 trillion to the deficit. they re trying to distract from the things that matter to people and their own popular agenda. we sdroebt to play that game as democrats. let me follow up on that, that gets to the central question of this entire campaign as it concerns joe biden, which is how much should he be talking about the sort of institutional threats posed by donald trump, institutional threats to our system of justice, to our democracy, to the voting system, and how much should he talk about, what you say, the bread and butter issue, the economy, inflation, et cetera, you seem to be landing quite clearly in camp b, don t focus on the institutional threats, is that fair? there s no such thing as a single-issue campaign for president. right. it s about a lot. now, it is very clear that most voters by pretty large margins say the economy and inflation are the single most important issue that s going to decide their vote. it s also true that three quarters of voters say that the they are unhappy with the economy and that donald trump has a big advantage on the economy. we have to narrow that gap. that doesn t mean we shouldn t talk about abortion and freedom and the threats that donald trump has. because what ties together donald trump s positions where he wants to cut social security, medicare, cut taxes for the wealthy, repeal the affordable care act, repeal abortion, is maga extremism. that s how i think we should frame it. i do wonder where you think the most movable voters are, right? because the economic stuff is plain to see. it s not a mystery, right? inflation is coming down. the joblessness rate, all of it, and it hasn t sunk in. whereas, i m not necessarily arguing for this, but the polling that we got, i think it was this week, an ap/norc poll, approval of donald trump s conviction nationwide, 15% of republicans approve of his conviction. those seem like the ghost of nikki haley s supporters. and i wonder if you think, you know, given freshness of this story and the fact that people are responding to it, whether there s to blunt about it, gold in them there hills for the democrats and the biden campaign. oh, sure. this is the anti-donald trump coalition is the biggest political coalition in america. but it s very diverse, right? you have voters who are biden voters who are upset about the economy. you have people who are biden voters who are upset about what s happening in gaza. you have trump voter who is may be upset former trump voters. so you have a lot of messages to a lot of people. what we know is there is a sufficient group of people who are deeply concerned about the idea i know this sounds crazy but deeply concerned idea that we should not have a convicted felon as president of the united states. i hope the president takes advantage of this during the debate in two weeks and brings it up. we have to make a full throated, proud, unafraid case against donald trump. that s going to talk about raising prices and cutting taxes for rich people, the threat he poses to freedoms like abortion, contraception, and the threat he poses to all of our freedoms because of the way he wants to govern what he did to try to pull the wool over voter s eyes in 2016 whshgs he got caught for and convicted for, tells a story about the kind of president donald trump would be and we shouldn t shy away from that. given the things we talk about, you know donald trump s going to bring up, well, we think he would bring up hunter biden. there s another trial in california, i believe, in september. should biden be talking about that? playbook suggests this is an opportunity to show empathy and connect with people who have faced hardship that in their own lives and families. what do you think about that? well, this is obviously deeply personal and deeply painful situation for the president, right? he had this is it s obvious every time he s ever been forced to talk about it. in all of the reporting you read, this is something that s very hard for him, of course it is. all this tragedy in his family, dealing with addiction, having to witness that. there s no question donald trump s going to bring it up in the debate. he did it in 2020 to try to rattle biden s case. i think if he can talk about this from the perspective of a father who loves his son, much like the statement that he and the first lady put out after the conviction, that hug he gave his son afterwards that he returned home to give, to show that side of joe biden, i think that is powerful. because the essential truth of joe biden is that he is a deeply empathetic person who is running for president because he cares about everyone else. and he can show that in that moment if that comes. and i think that s the way to do it and the way i think he would do it. i mean, his empathy, i think, does distinguish him from the other person who s going to be across the the president wraps his remarks on crime without a single mention of the growing immigrant crime crisis happening in this country right now. you re seeing since joe biden took office crime skyrocket. wouldn t we love to have a statistic where crime is down 67%? ours is only going in one direction. if you listen to donald trump or conservative politicians and conservative media like fox news, you probably think we are in the middle of a massive crime wave. we are not. this week we got new fbi crime statistics showing that in the fist quarter of this year, crime is yet again down across the board. overall violent crime down 15% from last year. murders down 26%. by every national metric, crime is down. regardless of the facts here, fox is still going big on crime. the organization media matters counted 304 reports about crime on fox in just the first two months of this year alone. the last time the fbi released crime data, back in march, crime data that again showed another drop in crime across the board, fox gave that data approximately two minutes of air time in the first two weeks after the data came out. fox only mentioned the declining crime rate seven times in those two week, and one of those mentions was this one. new data from the fbi claims that the u.s. crime rate is dropping. let s look at this graph while i stab you. given how much elected republicans and national conservative media are pushing the narrative of a staggering crime wave despite the facts, it sort of makes sense that republicans believe there is a rise in crime when really there isn t. but the thing is, it s not just republicans who believe that. recent polling from gallup shows that 77% of all americans believe there is more crime in the u.s. today than there was a year ago. despite, again, the opposite being true. crime went down this year and crime went down the year before. we are in the opposite of a crime wave. so what gives? why do so many americans think that crime is up? well, there are probably a lot of reasons, but there is one reason that does not get enough attention, local news. in 2019, one of seattle s local tv news stations, komo news, put out this documentary entitled seattle is dying. it depicts seattle as a city in decline because of rampant crime and homelessness. the seattle times newspaper was quick to refute the documentary s assertion that seattle was dying, pointing out that both property crime and violent crime have been dropping in seattle for decades, and komo news isn t some independent, whacky outlet, it is part of the sinclair broadcast network, a network of nearly 200 local tv stations. as the washington post put it, sinclair s recipe for tv news is crime, homelessness, and illegal drugs. journalist anne nelson told the washington post , sinclair plays up crime stories in a way that is disproportionate to their statistical presence. or as david told the post, it s a fox news wannabe. that s their model a political tool rather than a journalistic platform. but unlike what people hear from fox news or donald trump, viewers may not necessarily have their radars up when it comes to information they are attention anchors at dozens of local tv news stations who have been reading the same controversial script about president joe biden based on a widely criticized wall street journal article. have a listen. the wall street journal calling into question the mental fitness of president joe biden. as national correspondent matt galka tells us, the issue could be an election decider. the issue could be an election decider. the stations have one thing in common. they are owned by the conservative leading sinclair broadcast group and tonight we have a statement from sinclair denying wrongdoing or you for joining me. let me first get your response to sinclair s response. well, i think it was interesting that they ignored really the key issue, which is that they are amplifying and requiring dozens of local, trusted local news broadcasts, to amplify this very shoddy story by the wall street journal questioning biden s mental fitness based on really kevin mccarthy, the only on the record source. so they did not really address that. i think they are unhappy with the fact their tactics are being exposed. this is a problem they have had in the past of sending these very biased scripts to all of their affiliates and having them read them verbatim. can you talk about when you say they were forced to read these. sinclair as part of its defense says giving out scripts is common practice to affiliates and basically there is nothing to see here. from your reporting, what you understand about the pressure, if any, these local anchors are given to read this stuff verbatim? this is been well-established that sinclair, which has 186 affiliates it owns or controls, sends must runs segments that are produced out of their national office. actually after trump was elected in 2016 they hired one of his spokespeople, boris epshteyn as their national correspondent and then would have him do commentary which they required all of these stations to run. so it is true, there are affiliates that have relationships with different services. cnn operates one. there are a bunch of different ones. they will send along scripts, but that is something optional for them to do. this is the corporate parent requiring these affiliates which have all sorts of branding, abc, nbc, everybody, locks, and really pushing very hard right content in a way that is not transparent. the owner of sinclair broadcasting is a gentleman named david smith. he also purchased the baltimore sun not that long ago and i want to read for viewers who are unfamiliar with what has happened. the union representing the newspaper sternal essay monday that the articles do not meet standards. including a one-sided story about immigration policies and an op-ed by the co-owner likening the transgender movement to a cancer. in addition journalists say stories under their names have been changed without their permission and they have been reusing reporting from one of the 185 local tv stations owned by the sinclair broadcast group. this is a feedback loop, it sounds like. what do you know if the editorial practices under david smith? i think he has established himself as a right-wing operative. he has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to right- wing groups and famously he met with donald trump in 2016. jared kushner helped cut a deal where they would get access in exchange for not fact checking. david smith himself said we are here to deliver your message, so it is a very partisan operator, but he is really pulling the strings behind local affiliate neck works affiliate networks conviction today and wilmington, delaware on federal gun charges. the first is the human impact. it must have on a family that has certainly known tragedy, including putting a car crash that killed hunter biden s mom and baby sister, the death to brain cancer of his brother, beau, and his own descendance itself, destruction by crack cocaine. in a moment, ronald reagan s daughter, patty davis joins us to talk about her own struggles with addiction the second fact is that despite efforts to paint his trial as a counterpart, two or even the equivalent of donald trump s new york trial unlike the former president, a hunter biden is not running for anything the third fact is the one thing they actually do have in common in each the guilty verdict was rendered by 12 men and women who heard the evidence and seem to have set aside any preconceptions they might have had going in as one biden juror told cnn today, politics played no part in their deliberations, nor did testimony about the degree of biden s addiction, which he described as heart-wrenching the verdict was unanimous. and just like in new york, there is every indication the criminal justice system worked and continues to beyond that, nearly everything surrounding the two trials and their aftermath is a study in contrast starting with how egypt defendant reacted to the verdict. quoting now from hunter biden statement, thanking his wife and others. i m more grateful today for the love and support i experienced this last week from melissa, my family, my friends, and my community than i am disappointed by the outcome. he goes on to say recovery is possible by the grace of god. and i am blessed to experience that give one de at a time. by contrast, here are some where the former president said after his conviction this was done by the biden administration in order to wound or hurt an opponent, a political opponent and i think it s just a disgrace. but this was a rig decision right from day one, with a conflicted judge or should have never been allowed to try this case, never well, he said as much over and over and so have republican lawmakers before, during and after the trial with a special focus on attacking the justice department and the criminal justice system every single person involved in this prosecution is practically a democratic political operative. this was not criminal justice. this was politics. the entire thing is political. it s political warfare, scam trial. this is a scam. it is a sham, sham of a trial. a sham convictions joe biden s to tier in justice system while keeping them on as they re talking about the justice department at which had nothing to do with the trump trial, which is currently prosecuting a democratic senator and congressmen. and just oversaw the conviction of the president is only surviving son and the president s reaction quoting him now, i will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as hunter considers an appeal jill and i will always be there for hunter and the rest of our family with our love and support. nothing will ever change that he also told abc news he d ruled that a pardon for his son let me ask you, will you accept the jury s outcome, their verdict, no matter what it is? yes. and have you ruled out a pardon for your son? yes by contrast, the former president is now talking repeatedly about using the justice department if he s reelected as a tool of vengeance i. would have, every right to go after them and it s easy because it s joe biden and you see all the criminality, all of the money that s going into the family and him, all of this money from china, from russia from ukraine that s for republican lawmakers who decried trump s trial and conviction. consider house oversight chair james comer, who has been holding hearings and investigating the bidens for months, always claiming to have the goods, but always coming up empty. he is sticking to his story, tweeting today until the department of justice investigates everyone involved. the bidens corrupt influence, peddling schemes. it will be clear department officials continued to cover for the big guy, joe biden. more now, on the actual verdict and the actual trial and what comes next from cnn s paula reid just 90 minutes after hunter biden s guilty verdict, cnn got incredible insight into the case from juror number ten, won big mistake from the defense, calling hunters daughter naomi, to testify. i felt i felt bad that they put naomi as witness i i think that was probably a strategy that should not have been done. no daughter should ever have to testify or again, sorry despite feeling badly for hunter and his battles with addiction, the 12 jurors agree that they had no choice but to convict all 12 jurors agree that yes, he know i m laying in, bought a gun when he was an attic or he was addicted to drugs, although they all voted guilty, another juror, cnn spoke to off-camera question whether the case should have been brought in the first place, saying, quote, it seemed like a waste of taxpayer dollars and the jurors interviewed by cnn said politics played no role. in their decision. pressure, inviting never really even came in. to play for me. his name was only brought up one store in the trial and that s when i that s when i kind of sunk in a little bit. but you kind of put that out of your mind. president biden released a statement after his son s verdict saying, in part i am the president, but i am also a dad, jill, and i love our son and we are so proud of the man he is today and i will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as hunter considers an appeal contour issued a statement after court thanking his wife and supporters saying, i am more grateful today for the love and support i experienced this last week from melissa, my family, my friends, and my community, than i am disappointed by the outcome in spend special counsel, david weiss made aware statement defending the case, ultimately, this case was not just about objection a disease that haunts families across the united states including hunter biden s family. this case was about the illegal choices defendant made while in the throes of addiction his choice to lie on a government form when he bought a gun. and the choice to then possess that gun hello. what else did did you hear from jurors anderson? i was really interested to hear what they had to say about a possible sentencing hunter biden because the upper range for conviction on these offenses is potentially decades in prison, hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines. so it s widely expected. hunter biden and wouldn t get anything anywhere near that. this is of course, a first-time offender, but juror number ten told us he doesn t think that hunter biden should get any prison time. another juror said that hunter needs rehab more than he needs imprisonment or a fine. and while the jury is weighing in on sentencing it is ultimately actually up to the judge should determine the sentence. and we expect, while there is no sentencing date, now we expect it will be roughly 120 days after this verdict, which would fall in late october so that s before election day. but likely after his next federal criminal trial, which is scheduled for early september out in los angeles i ll read them so much, paula, let s go next to the white house. i ve seen kayla tausche with more and how the president and the first family are dealing with this moment what s the reaction been from the white house for president biden anderson, president biden is approaching the situation first and foremost as a father in the statement released today, president biden saying, i am the president, but i m also a dad, jill and i love our son and we are so proud of the man he is today. so many families who have had loved ones battle addiction, understand the feeling of pride, seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery, the family greeted each other on the tarmac in delaware this evening, hunter biden, embracing members of white house staff and members of the security detail before the family then retreated to a nearby family home or they re going to be processing together what happens in the next chapter president biden has said that he will accept the judicial process as hunter considers an appeal and the biden reelection campaign is telling allies that for them, it s going to be business as usual. the president gave a speech at a previously scheduled gun safety event after the verdict, which obviously is somewhat ironic, what did what did he say there well, it was a fairly awkward conflict fluence of events today. president biden finding out about that verdict just before this preplanned event, where he was in this situation of a heralding a crackdown in gun violence i expect it to tout we knew that president biden was expected did two announce more than 500 new charges brought by the department of justice on gun crimes in the wake of his new bipartisan gun law that was passed and signed into law. in 2022. instead, the president took a broader approach. instead praising the new tools that prosecutors were given by that law, anderson per kilo joshua. thanks, joining us now to people who ve worked with and no prison biden wells and political commentators david axelrod and kate betting field, also with us retard federal judge johnny jones, the third and former federal prosecutor, jessica raw, third, judge. let me start with you. does the vert verdict surprise you d all know the verhaeghe didn t surprise me at all, anderson, i think the evidence was overwhelming and what i thought was notable and picking up one on your lead, which i thought was spot on in both of these cases, you had judges want to state judge and the other a federal judge saying, among other things, you must follow the law 224 americans in these two cases, you must follow the law, whether you agree with it or not, and you re not to be concerned about the sentence that i may give if the defendant is convicted, clearly, it validates our system of justice because they did exactly that. jessica, how about you? i mean, any surprise and what kind of grounds for appeal may there be? yeah. so i was not surprised by the verdict as the judge, the evidence really did seem to be overwhelming and the charges were pretty straightforward in terms of what the jury was being asked to find. but i think the k is also highlights the limited role that we give to juries in our system. now are there astro apply the law as they re instructed about the law to the facts and not to render an opinion in the courtroom about whether they think this was a wise prosecution or what they think is inappropriate punishment. i mean, they re really quite limited. it s not clear to me that there are strong grounds for appeal. i mean, there is a second amendment issue on whether or not the law that makes it a crime to possess a gun. if you are addicted to drugs, whether that survives a second i ve ever been challenged under the supreme court s current jurisprudence on that, but that would really only go to one of the three charges so it could be that there are some issues with respect to the evidence that was admitted, but that would be subject to harm plus error review maybe there s an appellate issue about whether or not he was entitled to essentially the benefit of the plea agreement that he had reached with the special counsel that previously fell apart, but i don t see those as being particularly strong in david. i mean, your sense of the verdict the impact it would have on the biden family and the white house. and i obviously on the campaign trail in the days ahead of any well yeah. look, i think that s the important question. anderson. a couple of weeks ago and trump was convicted, i said that i thought that the really important question was not how it would affect voters directly, but how it would affect him in his behavior. and we ve seen his behavior become even more pointed and angry since that conviction. here this is such a devastating experience for the biden family to have gone through this week to have their families go through this people get into trouble, they go, but not under the glare of the spotlight, like this. and to have your dearest relatives on the stand and have to go through this has to be devastating to the present. kate would know this even more intimately than me, but i know how much this must hurt him and there must be some feeling of guilt because he s the reason there s a spotlight on the family and why they re travails are so much in the news, so the question is, how does it affect him? he s got a debate in two weeks. he s dealing with multiple world issues right now and all the rigors of a campaign and how will he deal with it? i think is a big question. yeah. kate, we mentioned that the president promptly went to delaware to be with his son. and again, the contrast between other trump family approached the manhattan trial and how the biden family approach. this trial is stark. how do you think this is going to impact the president well, look, it is absolutely hard on him. he is a family man that you really cannot underestimate are under appreciate how close the biden family is, how much they lean on each other i think it would be hard for any father to go through, not only the experience of this trial, of course, but obviously all that hunter is dealt with and dealing with addiction and things have happened when he was in the grip of addiction. so yes, of course it is personally hard for the president, but i would also note he s somebody who has shouldered a lot of personal tragedy and difficulty while also juggling being in public office, he lost his son, beau to brain cancer when he was vice president. obviously his as you mentioned at the top has his first wife and baby daughter were killed in a car crash just weeks after he was elected to the senate. so he has spent his entire life in public service shouldering challenges, difficulty holding his family close, but simultaneously executing the duties of the office and being able to put to put his work first two. so i think his resilience, i think will really be the on display for people over the next few months. i think you saw a little bit today, frankly, when he was speaking at the gun safety event, he was lively. he was engaged, he was clearly talking with a lot of passion about the work he s done on gun safety and talking to the crowd. so i think i think the american people are going to see a lot of resilience for him. but of course this is hard for him. it s hard for him hi, are biden family, judge jones, what would you consider for a sentence on for these convictions? and also with the idea in mind that he is facing a tax charge as well that s potentially more worrisome for well, of course, the judge has to follow what are called the sentencing guidelines, which has my colleague knows are numbingly complicated, but the sentence needs to be sufficient, but not greater than necessary to fulfill the purposes of sentencing i think in this case because he didn t brandished the gun, he didn t commit a crime of violence was on another crime associated with to purchase it out. very frankly, anderson, over almost 20 years in the federal bench, i never had a stand alone case like this. this is really this actual charges and not something that s been brought tapped on. and this is the kind of zebra okay his, if you will. but i think in this case, there s a good argument for probation or it out with some kind of help remedial help counseling addiction treatment, and so forth. the real real peril comes with the tax charges because this counts as a conviction which it has the will in fact, enhance any sentence that he gets if he s convicted at the tax charges. so there s that s mandatory. that whatever the charges and this impacts that trump gets certain points for prior convictions and then of course that case is driven in part by the mount of the tax fraud as well, which escalates the sentencing exposure. that s where he really is in jeopardy of going to prison. i don t think this case so much. david, what do you say to republicans who were insisting tonight, the justice system as being weaponized against the foreign president, even though president biden s own son was just convicted in federal court and you ve got them menendez case and another congressman yeah, this is really complicated for them for that reason. and remember, yeah, you ve got senator menendez on trial, right now? congressman cuellar awaiting trial right now. it just puts the lie to the idea that there s this weaponized justice department of justice department has nothing to do with the manhattan da s office, but it s also a complicated for them because they have become so zealot zealous about the second amendment that they don t quite know how to talk about. this. so they re all shifting. and the thing that they re doing anderson is this whole, the mantra and they all move as one. is this biden crime family thing because really what s at play here is they re strategy is to try and say everybody is corrupt, that everybody is swimming in the same murky waters that donald trump is no different than joe biden. and that voters should discount the fact that donald trump is a convicted felon and has some other major cases pending against him. so i think you re going to see a lot of that. what congressman comer said today, chairman comer was really disgraceful as you pointed out he has been rolling out this cannon periodically. he lights the fuse and every time a flag comes out that says pop and there s nothing there. and so if they ve got evidence of a crime, maybe they should share it with people instead of just talking about it. and i think they don t because they don t in cape person biden and the foreign president and obviously have their first debate on cnn june 27th are you concerned about trump getting under the president s skin by invoking hunter biden. he obviously try to, when they debated in 2020 he tried in 2020 and it really backfired on him. i mean, i can tell you that the data that we saw on the biden campaign after that first debate where no trump really wound up and tried to come at hunter, was that what people remembered from that debate was joe biden defending his son, talking about his love for his son relating to people all across the country who ve had dealt with family members and friends who ve suffered from addiction. so it was actually a very relatable moment that really connected the joe biden as people across the country. so i think 44 joe biden, he should certainly expect that donald trump is going to come at him with this on the stage. we know that trump s going to try to throw everything he can it biden to get under his skin. but we ve also seen that this is a failing political argument. trump has tried to make it stick for five years. it hasn t and it ultimately winds up being an opportunity for people to see joe biden s humanity. and that s very moving and power david axelrod. thank you, judge jones. jessica roth, as welcome. have your point in the op-ed, i mean, do you think basic humanity and empathy are possible in this hyper-partisan moment, the country is in well, i mean, on some days i think it s not possible some days i think it s extinct, but i think we have to keep looking for that and we have to keep reaching for it and i think even some of the comments from jurors expressed sympathy and compassion for hunter because this is at its root. this is not this story about a hunter biden is not a political story. i don t even think really at its right. it s a crime story even though he was convicted of some crimes but i think at its root it is a very sad story about addiction and a disastrous choices that addicts make and the ripple effects of those choices in families, lives and over time, i mean, obviously this is yes, it doesn t here s the thing about about an attic. when you, when you re addicted, your world is very insular. everything is about you and the substance that you re addicted two, that s that s kind of it, right and once you if you are fortunate enough to let go of that addiction and to stop using whatever substance it is, whether it s drugs or alcohol, you don t immediately change your mode of thinking. you don t immediately like break get out of that, that takes a lot of work and a lot of time and i am assuming that hunter biden is going through that. now. he starting to realize the extent that his addiction had on everybody else. i think it was very poignant for him. probably seeing his daughter testify in court, which has a really difficult thing to do you were candid about your own struggles with addiction in your teens and early 20s. the piece you wrote for the time, as you said, as the daughter of first governor and then no president, i do know what it s like to live under a glaring unforgiving spotlight than never dims the choices you make in your life. the mistakes, the stumbles are preserved forever and sometimes tossed out in front of you like a minefield, you have to keep crossing it s i mean, first of all, you re really a lovely writer. what kind of scrutiny to you in terms of what did that scrutiny due to you in terms of drug use, what was it like living under that kind of scrutiny? well my drug use wasn t made public. i mean, i have made a public because i ve talked about it since, but i basically i didn t get caught you know, i mean, i wrote about in his book how and my father was governor. i used to i used to drive at those so bored at site in sacramento on this summer s, i used to drive up to folsom prison because they hadn t gift shop how i found out that it keeps other calls from prison. i have no idea. it s not like a 70s. not like i go to google them, but i did and i used to like smoke a joint on the way going to force some prison completely stone, probably with other joints in my purse fortunately, they didn t search my purse, but a friend of mine when she read this story in my book said, well, were you worried that they would smell it on, you know, i never thought about that. so i never got clot. but, you the thing that follows me around, what is my activism in the 80s when my father was president in my sort of stridency and the anti-nuclear movement whenever i not whenever i read something about myself, but a lot of times, if i read something about myself, it s patty davis, the rebel daughter of becoming known or as my drink? yeah. well, i owe well, as governor, i didn t think about it because i was, you know, just too strung out on drugs, i didn t think about it, frankly and by the time he was president, i had stopped doing drugs but i think like i was saying that that sort of self consumed mode of thinking, i think that was still very much my mode of thinking in the 80s when my father was elected president. and because if i ve been thinking more expansively, i think i would have expressed myself differently and not as stridently i think i d probably still would have spoken out about the anti-nuclear in the anti-nuclear movement because i believed in it very strongly but i would have done it differently but i didn t i you know what i mean? it was still that well, i m going in prison at 18 the reality is the goal is to reintegrate them with society but cnn has found that boys as young as 14 had been held here at the notorious panorama prison with an estimated 4,000 inmates. it is the largest concentration of isis fighters in the world. no journalist has been allowed inside panoramas since 20 2021 until now so the head of the prison has asked me to put on a head scarf while we walk through here because these are some of the most radicalized prisoners they have a senior us official told us the number one concern at panorama is the prison break. the fear that was realized in 2022 when hundreds of inmates managed to escape and i look inside 25 men sit cross-legged in silence cell is spotless. the men we see appear to be in indecent physical condition but washington. and this is cnn some more breaking news tonight to shootings in atlanta one at a downtown food cord this afternoon left 23 people wounded. and while please run that scene, they got word of shots fired on a transit bus just a few miles away, which turned to a bus hijacking than a police chase onto the interstate. finally, when that ended, police made a grim discovery. more now in all from cnn s ryan young begin around 43911, call about gunfire and a hostage situation on a bus when officers arrived to investigate the bus takes off and the chase begins from above, you can see the county bus swerving uncontrollably through rush hour traffic and atlanta dangerously moving in and out of traffic through city streets and onto the highway where elana police officers desperately investigation by the atlanta police department as well. was from the georgia bureau of investigation. we currently do have in custody a 39-year-old joseph career officers from several police one person shot and killed anderson. we re also finding out the man who was arrested as a convicted felon, but i want to tell you something we were doing a news conference about that earlier shooting and this start happening. i got a phone call from a source that was saying they could see several police cars chasing this car through the streets of atlanta there was very harrowing. in fact, they saw officers trying to use their car to block that bus, but such a large vehicle moving through the city it s amazing that no one else got seriously injured even know, sadly one person did lose their by individuals whose names and dates super match incarcerated felons. do you think that has an impact on even people who are eligible? it s about without question, without question it took months and the threat of lawsuits for jails to get up to speed. we had an election happened, but no jail fully. what s compliant? and what the law facilities across the state worked with voting rights groups like the aclu and election workers to finally ensure ballot access ahead of tuesday s primary their vote should not be any less important than the individuals that are out here. and unfortunately, i think you would have had a quite different storm from them. so i mean, maybe it s political break as hard as it is maybe tough just because i think it is so hard on the president, his family, but i absolutely agree this is not going to be a huge political winner for the republicans for couple of reasons. first of all, we ve actually seen them try to make a hunter biden line of attack that sticks to joe biden for five years now. i m trying to to make it central to the 2020 campaign. it didn t work and i ll tell you, we saw on the biden campaign in 2020, not only did it not work, it actually wound up highlighting some of the things that people most love and connect to about joe biden, his love for his family as humanity. so this just hasn t been a winning line of attack for them. and then also if you look at the reaction republicans had yesterday, it was all over the board to say the least. i mean, i think they recognize that the center of this conversation is really one about addiction. and that s a hard thing to seem like you re on the attack over. there s also the gun politics here. i mean, this is sort of a weird, unnatural place. it s for republicans to be arguing for less strict gun laws essentially. so no, i do not think there s gonna be a political winner for the republican by any stretch. i mean, i think matt, i m reading from the wall street journal. they write about the guilty verdict and they say the guilty verdict is likely to minimize any political impact and acquittal bio biden, hometown jury would have fed donald trump s narrative of unequal justice, especially since the justice department tried to let hunter off with a slap on the wrist plea deal. yeah. i mean, i don t think there s going to move votes. one way or the other. i mean, look at the end of the de is 50-year-old man are so he s responsible for his actions and you re lying on a federal form like that is something that is apparently great easily prosecutor able like it s it s fairly, fairly open and shut and so look, i don t think this is gonna move votes one way or another. i mean you remember, i remember 2020 debate. i think when that became an issue, i wonder if it s become an issue this time. i think it s unlikely. i think if they try the convicted felon line and that could be easier. or torque but yeah i don t really think at the end of the day this is going to move votes one way or another. and he s responsible for his actions. and we had another case coming down the pike it with tax charges in a few months. well, and also not the candidate. right. i mean, that s the other key difference here response to donald trump being a convicted felon is like, well, your son is a convicted. okay. well that s been kind of the whole, the whole game all the way along, right? so on and when you look at the impeachment proceedings against president biden, that really fizzled what they were trying to do was muddy the waters and make it and this is why they use the phrase biden crime, family, right? they re trying to tag the president with something that may be associated with the sum, but we haven t seen them actually come up with anything. right. without evidence. right? right. right at this point, i think i think what you saw yesterday in terms of the reactions from some republicans was some reaching, right? as well as an inconsistent overall message on how to react to this. you add some once again going to unfounded sort of conspiracy theories almost not mentioning the trial yesterday, not mentioning this result, but trying to indicate that there are other charges again, without without evidence, you had other republicans that seem to be saying that once again, trying to frame the justice system still as launching a witch hunt against, against trump, which again, just this would seem to muddy to undermine that argument when you have a justice department that did just deliver a guilty verdict to the president s son here. so at this point, you re not seeing really a consistent response from the gop on how to react to something that is really complicated. i mean, just a couple of days he s ago, you also saw the former president talk about the issue that was clouding this trial, which is that of addiction, one that i think many republicans and democrats know, many americans throughout the country are dealing with or know somebody who is, who is struggling with that issue. so it s not an easy one to tackle here. brandy i mean, one thing that we ve gotten in this case is that we ve actually started to hear from some of the jurors. yes. i m talking about this and this, of course something that when we have talked, obviously the former president s trial has become so political, but the jury itself, right? when you ask republicans like, hey, like, this was a jury if normal people, yes, they ll say, well, they re from manhattan, but you don t get the same kinds of attacks on the jury. and now we have jurors here in this case arguing that, hey, like our decision was not political, let s watch a little bit of that. if anybody was in that courtroom or the jury around, they would know it was not motivated by politics politics played no part whatsoever in my mind i can t speak for the other jurors but nothing was nothing was ever said about this election year that was never brought up pretty interesting texture there. yes, there is no better perspective than that from a juror. and so to hear from a juror that there was nothing in their minds that had to do with the political nature of the fact that it was president biden son, i think says a lot. i think jury systems work and i think to have our jury is talk about like, look, everybody knows is joe biden son, but at the end of the day, we re just looking at whether or not he lied on a form and whether or not he s guilty. and i think that says a lot about how intact our jury system is, because obviously there s a lot of noise surrounding the fact that it s the president s son so we re also learning about what he s going to potentially use on appeal. and the lawyers have indicated that they might try to use a supreme court ruling that actually came down in favor of conservative gun rights advocates. the president has criticized it to try to appeal this conviction is that something that you to see being potentially effective for him? line in his refusal to vote for donald trump that some republicans like mitch mcconnell is not doing that what is going on here with him? and what does it tell you about the state of the party today? i think it s easier for ryan to do. he s not an office and he s he s kind of has a nice kinda private-sector job. god bless him. it s easier to have that when mcconnell s still in office, who knows me going to run again? probably not. we ll see, but i think that is the kinda be different there. and look, i think the parties changing last ten years. i mean, we were just came upon the ten-year anniversary of eric cantor losing a primary back in 2014, and from that data, this day, who would have kinda thought i will say i respect what paul ryan is saying. he has obviously first-hand experience working with him as speaker of the house. i also don t think it s going to change very many mines and this is kind of what the other thing i talk a lot about and the kinds of democrats, but i ll just say in the context of the setting, people price in the fact that trump s has all this bad stuff. trump does this, trump says that that s fine. now we re going to talk a lot about abortion later in the show. and i think that might be the more salient issue if you re a democrat to push rather than look at what trump said now, but i respect what he s saying and i think you re right. this is the former vice presidential nominee from what, 12 years ago, but paul ryan s increasingly the minority of the party. i fight. i mean, anytime we mentioned this as an island, write a small island isolated on anytime we mentioned sort of these signs of descent, i think it s also worth mentioning the reason why it s news in a way is because it s, it s becoming increasingly rare to hear a republican kinda come out and criticized trump, love that magnitude. i mean, right, i mean, he s not let s point. i mean, he s not an office right to me, it s like such an indictment of the republican party rigueur as it stands right now, you have people for whom speaking up and saying donald trump is not fit to be present, united states might impact their electoral chances. that is, a position they should still take if that s what they believe, but they don t. and that tells you a lot hi about where the republican party, let s look at how one elected office holder, congressman troy nehls, talked about paul ryan with my colleague or my cnn colleague up on the hill yesterday. watch paul ryan, you re a piece of garbage. you re a piece of garbage. and we should kick you out of the party for paul ryan and say he s not vote for donald trump. that s the problem with some of our republicans. its guys like that. don t go spout in your mouth. often saying you re a conservative your spit in the face of the leader of our party, donald trump. i m grow up a little bit a piece of garbage. it s also like this message. i m just like fealty to the great leader rather than like making an argument that welcomes a lot of different voices and into your party, it s such a bizarre electoral strategy. i understand. you know, trump won in 2016 and since then, essentially republicans have said only donald trump is the way we can win despite the fact as paul ryan pointed out, despite the fact that they ve actually not won an election sense. and yet the message you get from republicans is like how, first of all, piece of garbage just course it s language but also it s like how dare he criticized the great leader. it s just a bizarre, i don t know. it s just a bizarre mindset. i will say this. i think troy s have bit of an outlier in a few respects because he was same guy, didn t you also came to the courthouse and like sedimentary, he knows when he has to say to get on tv. and so he knew the say something saying like this, we actually get them time on tv. so i think he might be an outlier in this. i think if you asked almost anybody in the conference, they would not agree with that. but he knows what he has to do to get on tv. but i think you re right. in some respects, look, it s easier when when paul ryan it s out of offices in office, i know trump is coming down to dc today to have kind of a meeting and looking is the leader of the party. i will say this we a primary, right? like we had and he had a one-on-one race with nikki haley. he did. and he one and i think that is it makes it a lot easier for republicans. it s not like 2016 where there s this clown car at the end where people were siphoning off votes. so i think it s easier for trump to take the mantle if he goes down there today and say, look, you had a primary i won fair and square, like we come together. well, this is the other key. i mean, paul ryan also says that he s he s not saying he s going to vote for joe biden he s criticizing trump, but he s not saying he s going to vote for joe biden. and when i hear his comments, basically expressing disappointment with both candidates, i also wonder you were talking about the primary. what that means for other voters that may share similar views as paul ryan s, such as maybe some of the haley voters, other members of the republican party are voters that are disappointed with both of these candidates. what will they do in november? and it makes you think about that when you hear those comments. okay. i think think of paul ryan, it s a nikki haley voter, didn t vote for trump, 20, didn t vote for, i can vote for trump in 24, didn t 16? z is central all right. welcome back. later this week, the senate will be voting on legislation to try to ensure nationwide access to ivf treatments it s a democratic efforts not only in trying federal protections for reproductive care, but also highlight republican resistance ahead of the november election. the vote comes as the country is approaching the two-year anniversary of the downfall of roe versus wade and made way for controversial alabama ruling that through the question, the legality of increasingly used fertility treatments. majority leader chuck schumer calling on his republican colleagues to pass this ivf bill protecting ivf should be one of the easiest votes the senate has taken all year the vast majority of senators should agree that strengthened and treatments that help people start a family is a good thing. but no way shape or form is protecting ivf a show vote. it s a show us who you are vote all right, joining me now, are new york times reporters. elizabeth is and lisa layer. they are the authors of the new book, the fall of roe and the rise of a new america. good morning to both of you. thank you so much for being here and we ll let kate and matt ask some questions as well, because this obviously is a conversation that the country he is now having with itself what how is the nation going to look in the wake of the fall of roe? and we are learning every day, the new implications that come out of it talk a little bit about how you came to write this because you really, i think set out to answer the question how was it that row fell at what did you learn in the course of reporting this that helps us understand what s going on now. sure we thought it was really important to create a narrative of just what even happened especially over the last ten years because there hadn t really been one, right? this is an issue that s pretty polemical well, and instead of just looking at that side of it, we needed to know what are the facts because he can t understand where we re going. and i were talking about ivf all kinds of issues that we had not talked about really publicly. it campaigns before mean when was the last time anyone talked about icf as a presidential issue or never? when, we were talking about your embryos on the conversation. but as long time, you can t understand the stakes about where we re going until you understand the pieces of where we ve come from. so our book, the fall of roe really takes a look at all the things that maybe people missed about how we ended up, where we are yeah, it really is the first narrative of how rho fell. it s we we did a lot of deep reporting on both sides of this fight, talk to people who really just opened up about sort of the legal and political strategy in the anti-abortion movement. and also how the abortion rights movement fail to see and some cases stop what was going on as much as they could and so it s really encompassing of the legal strategy and the political strategy of documenting this, this really like historic period and time. and i do think it s scrambled our politics massively. i can t think of an issue that scrambled or politics so quickly and so dramatically as the end of roe. and so to understand these new politics and really in some ways to understand this election cycle where abortion has emerged as this determinative issue in a way that it really hadn t been at the presidential level. you have to understand how we got to this point yeah, fascinating. and of course, we got to this point in no small part because of samuel alito is a justice who has come under increasing criticism at here. and we actually heard him on tape. this was a liberal activist who recorded him. i, at a dinner where he talked about. and again, this was someone at a party who s approaching him with her view and he says he agrees. but the word godliness comes up and i think it really ties into this conversation. let s just watch a little reminder here. i suppose that and then we ll talk people in. this country, we re leaving that keep fighting to return our country a place the bottling names. i agree with so elizabeth, i mean, you really focus in on the connection between religion and our politics when you hear that, i mean, how does it tie in with what lisa does every day? which number well, it s not a phrase you d normally hear in legal disgust, like legal decisions, godliness, returning the idea returns turn america to a place of godliness but we re seeing more and more in american public life, like basically you name, name the area where this merging of conservative christianity and, and the future, like what the certain segment of mostly right-wing of a gel calls and catholics want for the future of the country. it s a movement that prioritizes this opposing abortion often same-sex marriage, all kinds of these big hot-button cultural issues. and you hear echoes of this. all the way in the highest court, right. with samuel alito, it s why we re hearing references to the flags being flown at his home or appeal to heaven, which is another conservative christian. sort of, well, actually banner based really about what kind of country they want yeah. i mean, i think part of what our book shows that there the fall of roe was accomplished by this web of conservative activists and lawyers and, churches and other and politicians, of course, republic we can politicians who are all pulling together. there s no one mastermind. but they were pulling together in a way that took generations and part of that effort was working conservative justices up through the courts and particularly to the supreme court and then they made their sort of guidance. they made their ideal political deal with donald trump helped get them election, elected. donald trump got three justices on the court, which was pretty unprecedented and they got these justices who had come up in their movement and we re willing to strike. it s such a landmark legal precedent i m curious. did you did you find especially in the wake of the immediate political backlash that i think it s fair to say republicans are feeling after the fall of roe, as you re talking to republicans, do you do hear them charting a course forward that is about leaning further into this. do you feel that you did you hear them? recalibrating? i m just curious, sort of. well, what what what the, the political folks you were talking to, what they feel like the prognosis it s so interesting because it wasn t just that democrats didn t believe row could actually fall and abortion, even some abortion rights activists and believe row could actually fall, report many republicans didn t believe row could actually fall. so the policy that was made as we show in the book in what we call the row era was built with this understanding that a lot of these things were political positioning, or even if they republicans believe they wanted to enter abortion, they didn t actually think these policies would necessarily be put in place, then real fell and the country was plunged into the series of unprecedented debates. and all of a sudden, these politicians on both sides had to talk about things like ivf had. i think i ve heard the word missing it s kerogen uterus. use more in political discourse over the past few years. i don t think i ever heard that in all my years. all our years covering campaigns, casey ray, now everyone is plunged into this world where abortion rights are not, this abstract concept on the national level, like we re living in this real reality of like how sick does a woman have to be to get a medical exemption? what s sick enough, like what what are these things actually mean? and that s forced as you re sort of saying, a scrambling of these politics. i would ask, i m telling him i would agree with you. first of all i found in a lot of respects our sayyed it was oh, here, we have this kind of thing. it s coming like it really wasn t like for a lot of folks at very tangible thing and very, very close. and i get to that point what is one? kind of either event or decision that kinda led that we might have missed to it than that 510 years span prior that you think like this was kind of where it was set a little bit on the glide path, was the justices wasn t something more minute? yeah. and i m not saying republicans were not sincere in their desire to end abortion. i think they were. i just think nobody really thought through what it actually would mean in real life, tangible impact. it s interesting because our book starts in 2012 and right after the reelection of barack obama, and we started that point because it s really the lowest point for the anti-abortion movement. and if you remember what the country was, it s the moment when conservative christians stopping a majority in american public life. it s the moment when obama is reelected, when democrats feel ascendant, when they have this abortion rights majority on the supreme court. and i think that moment that republican autopsy, which i m sure we all remember republic, i covered that can t be he i said x each other on the plane for very many, many days, we weeks where republicans, the republican party really said we think abortions a loser. it s a loser of an issue for us. and that moment i think is overlooked because that s the moment when the anti-abortion movement let s start to claw back and they really sort of these activists, i think dug deep and figured out a new strategy. and their strategy was, we re not shying away from this word, leaning into it more. and we think are voters and our politicians will support us. and they were right in some ways, it would be really easy to just find one moment, right? if there was just one thing we all understood, then i can unlock this mystery. but this part of the major success of the anti-abortion movement was their ability not to create one plan, but dozens, hundreds of plans, right? and his wife, jill biden was not they re valid. biden was not there. she hurried and basically right after the guilty verdict had been red basically the first lady came up and went straight to the goodness holding room and then went to hunter and then obviously exited with him holding his hand. hunter biden when he heard the verdict he basically didn t move. he was like just this still portrait and then right afterward, he just nodded his head three times. it s okay. let s move forward. he hugged his lawyers. yes. it s wife. and then just said, let s get on with it. the next thing and there s plenty of next things to go beyond. appeals are definitely going to come potentially on second amendment grounds. you also have another trial that honestly as messy as this one was, this one. the next one might be messier because when you re dealing with a tax case, you re dealing with everything with spending money on yeah. there s a lot there. it keep any field. i mean, you when you were working in the white house, had to grapple with a lot of this as it was unfolding in real time. and one of the things i think i hadn t quite realized was the level of guilt that the president seems to feel around what hunter was going through then it obviously coincide with a time when he was deciding that he was going to run for president of the united states. can you take us inside that a little bit? yeah so yes, there is an amount of guilt that president biden feels you obviously know who s that if he were not president, if you were not front and center in our political conversation, hunter probably would not be dealing with these legal challenges but it s also important to understand about that period of time when president biden was deciding whether or not to run in 2019, that hunter really encouraged him to run and hunter didn t want to be a reason that he didn t run for president. so there was a lot of alex called it a love story. there s there was a lot of mutual love there between the two of them. both of them looking out for each other personally and wanting the other wanting to do what was right for the other so there s a lot of complicated feelings there, but at its core, a lot of love and a lot of respect it is also incredibly difficult and challenging for the president as it is for. i mean, i think any american who has a family member who struggled with addiction, it is a constant cloud that can hang over you. and obviously the president is enormously proud of how far hunter has come and how his thought to get to where he is today and protecting and preserving that progress that hunter s made is really important to the biden family and we know today in his story as well that the president does still fully believed that hunter can continue on this on his word to refer recovery. but at the same time, given all the events going on, he is concerned about what the future holds for his son as well i think that it s interesting that also you re seeing and that s evidenced also and just the movement of the president yesterday, you saw him change his scheduled to go to wilmington. you saw those images as well of him stepping off the plane, immediately embracing his son. i was in delaware last weekend and thought it was interesting that i mean, every public appearance you saw him basically attached to a hunter biden, whether they were going to church together or cycling together as well. you ve seen him really continue can you to embrace the sun? and i think that will continue as well as the language we saw from present biden statement when describing this case, when reacting to a you re going to see him continue to affirm his love for his son and continued to express empathy similar to that moment that we saw on the debate in 20 hey, 20, when trump was attacking, was going after hunter biden and the present had one of his more memorable moments where he really stood there and said, look, i stand by my son and i do love them. yeah. oh, sorry. no, no no. heading down that, the president s greatest fears, hunter relapsing and anyone knows it s been through banners and addiction. the biggest trigger for relapse is shame, which is why you have hunter always or sorry, joe biden always saying, i m proud of my son. i m proud of my son and trying to show that i m not embarrassed by you yeah. what i was going to say was they mean when you re the president there are cameras for your ever every movement, but if they didn t want a picture of joe biden embracing hunter biden yesterday. they could have avoided it, right? like they did that on purpose yeah. one sometimes when i think sometimes like joe biden doesn t even really care about the optics. i mean, i don t think having a hunter biden at some of these state dinners alongside merrick garland is like the best political optics, but joe biden doesn t care. yes, he is talking he has always going to put hunter s for hunter first. he s always going to put his family first and yes, there are times when it s optics me down. i love my son and the most important thing to me as being a father, i guess it s why kinda considering everything who said here, i am candidly skeptical of win or lose there s another, there s not a pardon in the future, forgetting every you re not alone. there are people, there, people close to the president that you didn t know. he has said this. he said this, you know, obviously very publicly there s some people around them that think he could change his mind. yeah. i mean, i think what do we have that the interview with david mirror where president biden said that he s not going to, pardon his son all right. we don t have that, but i mean there is the looming question of this, alex and in this other trial as well. i mean, if he gets off on prison time in this, which many of our legal experts have said, look like he s a first-time offender it s unlikely that this gun thing could lead even though there s a potential for 25 years, it s likely not to hit that. however, we re talking to a lawyer earlier on this program who said one of the things they could consider if there s a guilty verdict in the next case is that there will also then have been this prior conviction which makes it much more likely. i find it very hard to believe that that joe biden, the man if he has the power to get his son out of prison, doesn t do it will end as kate was just saying, you know, joe biden feels responsible for some of this because you have to remember when joe biden declared for president hunter biden is still not in recovery yet, like joe biden announces april of 2019, has his first rally on may in may of 20, 1,900 byte does not get sober until june of 19, 2019, and the thing is if you re running for president and this vicious political environment with his son that has a crack code cocaine crack cocaine addiction, you know that this is going to probably hurt his life potentially and it really has. so that s why i think that s why i think people, as you as you noted and simulated people close to the president, thank he might ultimately change his mind because he feels good. also, you referred to the abc news interview. he did say that he would not pardon his son. there is still the follow-up question of commey of commutation as well. there s multiple forms of clemency. could there be a sentence? it is awful over there and david could probably speak more to that than me being there so long and understand ing the people of haiti and knowing how to speak the language. it is like almost complete anarchy with very little government set up, it makes everything difficult for people there, especially. it is a dark place. i believe that the darkest places need light and davy and natalie were there. carley: david, pick up where ben left off. your son and daughter-in-law were working for a mission that you and your wife started. you have given of yourself and your family, too. tell us about the situation there and what needs to be done to help these people. yeah, it is terrible. we ve been there 26 years, started missions 24 years ago. the last four years have been complete anarchy, we have no current elected officials, they are by a ruling group trying to help haiti. gangs have stepped in, there is no rule of law, and have taken over. killing the president themselves, i don t know the details, i don t know if a gang or mrit cap opposition, but everybody expected international help would step in then and prime minister two years ago begged for international help saying the gangs had become too strong and were getting unlimited supply of ammo in the country and they said police were outmanned and needed help. a year later, it was approved for international force to come in, we are still waiting for them to get there. what we have experienced is great tragedy, haitian people have been experiencing this f forfour or five years. they are affected by gangs and their family members have been killed by it. carley: my goodness, naomi, your son and daughter were missionaries in the truest sense. they were bringing the word of god despite rest unfolding around them. they were in danger, they voluntarily put themselves in that situation for the greater good. i mean, the character your daughter showed at such a young age, how remarkable is that? it is beautiful. it is truly beautiful to see what they did there and how much they love the culture and the people. carley: ben, before i let you go, at the funeral, you spoke about the moment davy asked permission to marry your daughter. apparently, he was sweating, can you tell us about that? counts in his criminal hush money trial. and in a new piece for the new york times, it s taking a closer eslook at what that coul mean. explaining it like this, the justice department is part of the executive branch. and he will be its boss. he will be able to tell its officials to investigate and prosecute his rivals and mr. trump who has made no secret of his desire to purge the federal bureaucracy of those found insufficiently loyal to achis agenda will be able to fire those who refuse. what s more, the times also highlights how republican leaders in and out of government, are publicly pushing to prosecute democrats as legal retribution for trump s felony conviction. specifically, steve bannon, the former chief s strategist evto trump who fowas convicted in a federal prosecution for failing to comply with a congressional subpoena. and in the january 6th investigation. he told the times in a text message that now is the time for obscure republican prosecutors around the country to make a name for themselves by prosecuting democrats. stating, there are dozens of ambitious back bencher state attorneys general and district attorneys who need to seize the day everybody should just watch and look at faces of those hundred-year-old men, the greatest generation who gave their lives not they gave their lives but partners gave their lives and they put their lives on the line. what they did that for so we, today, could have a free vote. it s as simple as that. they gave it for freedom. what s on the line in the ballot, and i am not overlie dramatic is free elections going forward. donald trump tellsous what he is going to do and will we have free elects if donald trump is elected and that s on the line and that s also with democrats we have to continue to do is no more complicated than that. it s freedom versus the end of democracy. that s it. that s not hyperbole. and simone, in order to dedo that and in order to defeat donald trump, think we have to pick up a certain percentage of trump voters. so. well. my question go ahead. well, tii would say, not tru voters because trump voters are voting for trump. there are very few people who brand themselves as trump voters who would consider casting a ballot for joe biden. and so i actually think in y order to win, joe biden has to recreate parts of his coalition from 2020, and that coalition included republicans and obviously an until of voters and democrat being base voters. and i have to tell you all i talked to our colleague michael steele one of oumy cohost on th weekend about this often. and michael hesteele is you hav to create a structure because republicans and they cannot fathom e voting for joe biden. he think what the issue is democratic voters, because the tent is so big, especially black and latino voters, young people, right, women voting democrat for a long time, they have not had a problem going into a voting booth checking the box or pushing a button for a person that doesn t align with them on everything because they are clear about why they are voting and the person will give me everything and is not with me on all the things. but i got to go into the ballot box for x, y and z. lee pub cans voters have not had to do that for a lopping time. to ask republican voters never had to hold the nose and cast a ballot for someone they don t think alines with them 100%. and in this election, when we talk about democracy, and i heard hearing joe biden this morning every day i am proud to be an american. but today maybe especially proud because especially the joe biden is our president. because when he stood out there and he said that it is the blood of the young and the brave that will defend and he laid made the case very clear, that s not a speech donald trump could have given. it s not something donald trump believes. but it is going to take a coalition of people, again, as times wrote in america, presidents have to earn the mandate and idearn it from the voters. and the question on the table is can joe biden earn the mandate. and think he can but they have to recreate the coalition. simone, what he said was the price interference case will not go to trial before presidential election this november. yesterday, a georgia court of appeals officially stayed the case until at least october. that ntmonth the court will hea a challenge of judge scott decision s to allow district attorney fani willis to remain. it applies to former president trump and multiple codefendants including rudy giuliani and former white house chief of staff mark meadows. it seems in two of the really key cases, jonathan, the delays keep coming. yeah, the trump playbook for more than a year now is all the charges and various jurisdictions was to delay, delay, delay to try to push them past the election. that didn t work in new york. and atwe know that and got a verdict last week. but seems to be working about everywhere else. georgia case definitively not happening until after the election. mar-a-lago classified documents case, judge cannon seems to be running interference at times for the trump campaign and that s been delayed. so dave, that leaves one. and that s the federal january 6th case. he which right now, big peas of it lie before the supreme court waiting a-a ruling whether or not presidents have full immunity. it s been described to me as a couple options here. one option is they say no of course not and if that s the case there is still a slim chance that jack smith could get the trial done in maybe august and therefore, we would have that before the election. but, if they do anything else including kick it back to the circuit court it will be beyond ma. give us your analysis what you think could, but will happen. the only case that could go before the election is that d.c. election interference case. judge cannon slow walking the case and cathe case in fulton county and fani willis had self- inflicted wounds and d.c. a judge who wants it to go and prosecution who wants it to go, but the supreme court is holding it up. now, there are a lot of options. the people are court could ou throw it back to the judge and say fact-finding. p that would make much harder . to have the trial before the election. but she would have a public fact-finding hearing which then the public would learn about all the dirty details around donald trump s involvement with january 6th. that s something. but in the end, think the problem is that the people need to know whether donald trump is guilty of the crimes and everyone was agasped about on january 6th. and department of justes which normally doesn t push cases shortly before the election has announced they will go to trial in this case incurring right now from the same type of aggression. the president did say that the support for ukraine would continue, that we will be this for ukraine. how does that how does that parallel with and pay them off, here, we have country after country that volunteers to stand together stand together in defense of principles that we share and need tee fending. we see that in ukraine and saw it 80 years ago here in normandy. mr. secretary, good morning. of course, the war in ukraine is the backdrop to where you are today in normandy. i wanted to get your reaction. donald trump, the presumptive republican nominee said a few times including last night on social media that he is saying that putin will release wall street journal report evan gershkovich who is being held prisoner on espionage and suggested putin will do so after the election were trump to win. can you give us a sense what he is talking about. is there a back channel conversation between trump and putin offer is this sort of dangerous rhetoric? i don t know what he is talking about. i can t speculate on it. all i can tell you is, we are working every day to make sure americans who are being detained arbitrarily whether in russia or anywhere else, come home. and we managed to bring more americans home who are being arbitrarily detained than any administration. and i carry a list with me every day of the americans who remain detained by one power or another, and we are working every day to make sure that not another day goes by before they are brought home to their families. i am not sure what he is referencing, but i can tell you we are working at it every day. mr. secretary, as you sat there this morning on sacred ground, you witnessed a group of veterans aged 98 to 103, struggling to stand in order to receive the legion of merit from the president of the united states and the president of france. given the burden that the president is carrying and you are carrying, in gaza, in the kyiv i was wondering as you watch the ceremonies and looked at the faces of these aged veterans, what were you thinking about? mike, it s it was such an incredibly powerful moment to look at men to try to imagine what it was like for them. 80 years ago. and he thought back because my dad, then, 80 years ago, had just left college in the middle of his school year, to signp for the air force to prepare to go into world war ii. and some where else on this continent, my stepfather was incarcerated in concentration camp. a death camp. and the men who came here to normandy 80 years ago, and turned the tide on the war because 11 months later world war ii was over, some of them went onto liberate the camps. and liberate my step dad and he was liberated by an american tank with that 5 pointed white star on it rushing up to a gi in the tank who opened the hatch and african american gi and he said then the only words he knew in the english language, god bless america. that s what i was thinking about today. god bless america. god bless the men who were before us who saved the world. mr. secretary, the president talked about nato how it is growing, how much stronger it will become against these dark forces. we have had a time in the united states where the commander in chief at the time, did not respect nato, i will say it kindly undermined it. can you share what s most important about the conviction and commitment of this international alliance. mika, it s really as i said, our comparative advantage we bring other countries together in common purpose so it s not just america alone. editor sam jacobs interviewed president biden for the cover story on may 28th at the white house. good morning. so what is the pitch if you put it on a bumper sticker but let you go longer. what s the pitch for a second term other than keeping donald trump out of the white house again? well, think that the point that biden and his team makes is foreign policy is very, very important. it s as important as any issue and the difference between biden and trump on foreign policy is as big a difference as has existed on foreign policy in 100 years maybe ever. biden believes in alliances. trump and his team are very skeptical don t like alliances. it matters generally for the future of the world and for americans prosperity and security which way the country chooses to go. tell us more if you will about the president s vision for a second term in terms of the foreign policy particularly on the matters of ukraine and what we are seeing in israel and gaza. so, you know, big issue in the background is china managing china s rise. what biden talks about in the interview is a kind of alliance based approach to managing that. they point to he and his team point to ukraine as an example of the way that it values based alliance can maximize amplify american power and influence. he is expanneded nato, and he brought in some asian powers into the effort in ukraine in ways people haven t done before. and in the middle east it s been a more prague mat being approach after initially isolating insaudi arabia the administration pivoted and embraced them to pull them back from china. and obviously,s s wrestled mightily with the alliance with israel and with netanyahu. all that gets to how you manage china, which is the first country in 100 years that has the potential to challenge the u.s. both militarily and economically, and you know, that really competition is going to shape, you know, the future for the u.s. over the coming century. so tell us a little more about that and also the role india might play. we have prime minister and his party today we are learning going to be reelected, but a small margin than anticipated. how does president biden attempt to say he will attempt to manage the forces? so, again, it s good example of what the biden approach is versus the trump approach. trump took a bilateral one-on- one transactional by his kit and it s aes own account achieved a lot in his own right. biden is more internationalist. so within india in addition to the straight one-on-one stuff, they focus on what s called the quad which is japan, australia, india and the u.s. and trying to build that up into a kind of a more formal sustainable force. but he s the list if you go back and look at stuff they rolled out, at the bilats between trump between biden and modi, they have a long list of things they have tried to put uneatable to bring india closer to the u.s. because you are right, that s a key strategic player in managing china. and of covers, the versus wade, a new book is shedding light on conservatives strategy that finally led to the dobbs decision. the book is titled the fall of roe, rise of a new america exploring how the most fervent anti-abortion activist persuaded the court to end nearly 50 years of precedence. the book s coauthors national religion correspondent for the new york times and national political correspondent for reported 350 interviews and you really get into the history of the issue. so, it s a lot to get through. but, i guess the i will start at the end which is how the dam broke after this half century effort to overturn roe versus wade. doubled trump getting in the white house, obviously put the three justices on the supreme court. but at the end, what happened to push it over the finish line. our book is the first narrative of how roe fell and we looked at final decade what have we call the roe hear and they were able to move the levers in power and big and small working at statehouses pushing through legislation. and you point out donald trump is elected and they get they jump on that train. it is a bullet train for them. and they get really lucky and get three seats on the supreme court. and they are dealing with an abortion rights movement that is really ileequipped and unprepared to take on the threat in a country that has a pervasive sense of denial the right part of american life for two generations could suddenly disappear. so, donald trump obviously evangelicals were skeptical of him in 2015 and 2016 a talked about being pro choice. many time in public previous to that, and then maybe ultimately they realized they could perhaps shape him because he wants to be elected. one of the interesting things we found is it was not just evangelicals that catholics played an important role in the anti-abortion movement s growth origins. evangelicals were late coming to that in history. and leaders of the anti- abortion movement actually really were rooted in their conservative christian values. values about family, womenhood, and, of course, abortion. and what our story shows it was shows values that were behind the movement. certainly as lisa said there s all the levers of power they pulled. but at its core this is happening over a period when america s becoming increasingly secular. and there s so much cultural change especially when it comes to marriage, family and sex. and these are the things the anti-abortion movement ultimately is hoping to change. it is not just about overturning roe. it s about a much bigger half century plan to really rollback the sexual revolution. joe, you watched this so closely from the point of view of faith but also through politics over the course of your life. yeah. and your career. culminating once donald trump is in the white house with 50 years precedence overturned. right in right 50 years of precedence overturn and elizabeth you are right, catholics have been pro life for quite sometime as i always joke on the show. evangelicals my church southern baptists were pro choice from the time of jesus birth until the eagles broke up. and i just so when you say a new america, i think it s interesting it was a new republican party and redefinition by political activists in 1979, 1980, what it meant to be in the evangelical and what it meant to be a christian. and you had people like paul you richard and jerry falwell this is how we beat a southern baptist democrat. i am curious how did their political mass nations in 1979 and 1980 not only change american politician, but based on your reporting, how did it change how evangelicals looked at their own faith. in bringing in this political controversy that many now put at the center of their faith. well, look, if you think about politics influencing religion or religion influence politics, and the story that we have been really seeing you have been talking about on the show for so long, is in the trump era especially in the last decade, we are really seeing the merging of those two things. and politics influencing religion. and you know, you can think back to the very long game the anti-abortion movement, conservative christians think in generations about change not just a political cycle. but, also, the people that you mentioned, that s a couple generations ago. and there was actually this most recent generation that actually got overturning roe over the finish line was really led by conservative christian women. and they have a vision of what it means to be a woman in america. how motherhood fits into that. that really changed the game in the end. and it is not just the story of kind of the 80s religious right but a modern religious right that s not just issues about abortion but issues all kinds of cultural issues. in this whole realm about rolling back the sexual revolution. and some ways, they have radicalized along with the republican party it s a new generation of socially conservative activists and have gone, i think donald trump republican party expanded horizons of what is possible and that s part of what we see playing out in the politics now particularly on this issue. well, and let s also state what every survey shows. a the love people calm they will selves evan evangelicals. tim keller said he stopped using the term because it had been so politicized. i am curious, lisa, in your reporting, i think the cliff hanger here as dobbs was being decided after the leak was whether john roberts was going to be able to get kavanaugh or barrett to come with him and just go with the mississippi 15 week ban. i am curious what did your reporting find? how close did the chief justice get to getting one of those two to take a more incremental approach? well, he didn t get all that close. he tried and certainly tried hard but in the end, this is not what happened. and you know, one of the most interesting things i think we found is we uncovered some new sort of internal documents that showed where this movement wants to go in the future. and how you know elizabeth was talking about how this is a movement that is really intent on changing the structure or reverting in some ways the structure of american families and what we saw was they are looking at other things going forward and that was hinted at in the decision by thomas. but, certainly, the internal documents we got a handle on we are talking about transrights and talking about parental rights and religion and public squares and things like schools or town meetings, and same sex marriage. this is a beginning you into your act? i mean, it just i feel like it s that extra sense as a comedian where i think this is definitely something i am going to take on stage. and then, you know, now that i am married with a family, i it s not just me anymore. so, i have had moments where steffi has been like, i feel like that s just for us. right. and which is fine because there s a million other opportunities. i say i live in a house with a writing staff. because there s always something that i can grab and use. no doubt we all have multiple children and i think we related to the moment i think i am the number three person in the house and there s four of us hold on a second. think when people see you on stage and watched your special, they think she just has it together all the time. she just walks out on the stage and just does it. and you talked a little bit about how the chaotic events leading unto the special, and i am sure leading up to what you do on the stage, talk to us a little bit about that. yesterday for the first time since convicted of 34 felonies last week. in phoenix, arizona, a state trump is not visited since 2022. the former president focused on more of the past and the future, complaining about the perceived injustices come he says, that have been inflicted on him over the years. i just went through a rigged trial in new york. nobody s ever seen because dinner was rigged. the election was rigged the last time. i will tell you that. i did much better than i did in 2016. millions more votes but a lot of bad things happen. he used covid to cheat. impeachment hoax number one. everything is a hoax. meanwhile everything is a hoax the former president spoke to dr. phil about wanting to take the stand at his trial and how sometimes revenge can be justified. i have a lot of lawyers that are friends. i had probably 25 goes over the course of a couple months say whatever you do don t testify because you will say something just a little bit off and you will be indicted for lying or perjury. these are evil people. these are sick, evil people. i think you have so much to do, you don t have time to get even. you only have time to get right? well revenge it does take time. i will say that. and sometimes revenge can be justified. i have to be honest. sometimes it can? revenge does take time. revenge can be justified. susan glasser, this gets at what you re writing about in the new yorker. this idea that donald trump, everything, everything is about him and you show up at a rally and all you hear about are the injustices committed against him in the world and how he s a martyr and a victim and everything else. you never hear him talking about how he will make people s lives better, which is what presidential campaigns used to be about. that s right. if you go back and look, this is a significant escalation and radicalization of trump around himself in a way that is quite different from his 2016 or even his 2020 campaigns. the other part of the agenda has diminished and the all about trump part of the agenda has taken over fully. and to the point about contrast with president biden. barry struck that at a moment when biden makes a clear focus on his efforts to combat what s happening in the world, you have trump repeatedly saying in recent days that he essentially doesn t care that much about russia and china. they are not such a big problem pick the biggest problem is the enemy within. this is emerging as a real theme for trump s campaign and he proposes to do something about it. you saw that amazing clip with dr. phil. even sympathetic interviewers these days try to get trump to say it s not about revenge and he won t buy it because it is about revenge. again and again and again trump is telling us very clearly. i guess my question is, are people really listening to what he is saying? is different than what he said before. the biden campaign says people will start listening and to this point they have largely tuned out trump. the trial has come and gone and he will be out there with more high profile settings and name with the debate and it can t be stressed enough how much the biden campaign is betting on that debate to change the trajectory of the race believing americans were here trump talk about things like revenge and how it s justified and be repelled by it. my question to you is is the bet right? do we think the biden campaign this is been aesthetic race to this point and we ve seen a little moment here and there including after the verdict for the most part we can say it s close but trump has had narrow but consistent leads in most of the battleground states. do we think this argument here, this dangerous argument on revenge will change their minds? two great things happen as a result of the trial. one was the guilty verdict and this has put trump on a path that this is all he could talk about never hear the words inflation from his mouth. you don t hear the words immigration or crime or any of the talking points he would usually use. he is consumed with this now and even now we are a week or eight days of the trial and this is all he could talk about. this is not what voters want to hear. i don t think any voter will say i ve yet to see the numbers in the polls. i see things about immigration in the polls and democracy but i don t see revenge as an issue any voter has said is a key issue. the more donald talks about that, the better it is for biden. jean robinson, the story i don t know. it s a snapshot of our time and where we are right now that bends your mind. i ll read it to you. two officers who defended the capitol on january 6 were booed by pennsylvania republicans this week pick this happened as former capitol police officer harry dunn and former sergeant aquilino gonell, two officers that help to protect the capitol on january 6 and prevent the overturning of the 2020 election visited the pennsylvania state house as part of a cross-country tour to discuss the threat they say donald trump poses to the country. we are told some republican members not only booed them but turned their backs on the officers and even walked out. this comes as they have been on the campaign trail in key battleground states in an effort to get president biden re-elected. this is the upside down world we are living in right now where police officers, think back the blue and support the police and all that stuff, who stood in the doorway defending democracy and turned back a group of people who were led to the capitol by ally committed violence in the capitol, try to overturn our system of democracy, those officers are now being booed by republicans. it is unbelievable. one of those officers was injured, a real injury to his foot defending the capitol. the other was showered with racist abuse and, of course, physically threatened and endangered defending the capitol , defending our members of congress. trying to do their duty in the citadel of our democracy and they get booed. look, one of our two major political parties has completely lost its mind and that s largely because of donald trump. and it is not just the senators and the representatives who are out there with incendiary and inflammatory rhetoric, but at the local level it s the rot, the craziness is even deeper and, in a sense, a more worrisome because if you look state republican parties, there are fanatical, sort of, unhinged people who are becoming not just a significant faction and those parties but in control of republican parties in our major states. this is a political emergency that we are going to be dealing with, i think, for a while because even if donald trump is defeated this november, all this , sort of, insanity in the republican party across the country doesn t immediately go away. this will be with us. this is a small group of republican lawmakers in pennsylvania, sure, but it s representative of something else, is it not? the crime committed by these two police officers, in the eyes of the people blowing them , are that they are crossing donald trump and they are speaking the truth about donald trump and the truth about what they saw with their own eyes on january 6. you know, in the last 24 hours if need a contrast i don t think you could find anything more stony than if you follow the news on the one hand biden at normandy giving a speech and seeing the faces of those heroes, 98, 99, 100-year- old man from the greatest generation and you feel that greatness. and then you listen to donald trump doing an interview yesterday and hearing him talk about what s wrong with this country and the hate and the venom and the self obsession and the vengeance and the revenge. and then you hear local republican lawmakers booing january 6 policeman and turning the back to them. one party is about darkness and grievance and negativity and self-loathing. and the other party is and will be throughout this campaign about positivity and i will shut down asylum request at the southern border when crossing spike. under the order, border officials will stop accepting requests when daily encounters reach an average of 2500 migrants at democrats, but explain how this works. what happens as this executive order goes into effect? what happens to the excessive number of migrants trying to make a cross over the border. good morning and thank you for having me. the goal here is to reduce the number of people who come to the southern border of the united states and cross illegally. our goal is to drive people who seek and need humanitarian relief into the lawful, safe and orderly pathways that we have built. individuals who arrive at our border and cross illegally will be barred from asylum, with exceptions. however, 1400 people who have made appointments through our cbp one app will be able to seek asylum in the united states through our ports of entry. individuals who have access our parole program for cubans, haitians, nicaraguans and venezuelans will be able to access assignment relief in the united states we have built an unprecedented number of lawful pathways, but we are going to secure our border and reduce the number of people who are encountered at its. mr. secretary, good morning. i think the question for a lot of people and not just conservatives, is what took so long to get to this place? we can go well before the legislation, that group of senators work hard to present and then republicans and the congress turned their backs on it on the instruction of donald trump. but going back even further than that, a system that allows people to show up at the border, claim asylum, sometimes legitimately and sometimes not, and move into the country because they know it will take years for the asylum hearing to come up, why did it take so long to get to this place which does seem rational to many people? well, two points. first of all, you have ceased accurately upon the fundamental problem with our asylum system that it takes years and years and we need congress to fix it. only congress can provide the enduring solution, which is legislation. but that s let s take a look at the chronology. on day one of his administration, the president presented congress with a comprehensive legislation to fix our broken immigration system. since then and up until may of last year, we have been operating under the public health order of title 42. when that order was lifted in may of last year, we drove the numbers down, despite some predictions that pandemonium would ensue. shortly thereafter, the president implored congress to fund this department and other departments that administer our immigration laws as we need to be resourced. he, in august, submitted a supplemental funding package. and then again in october he submits another supplemental funding package. and neither was picked up by congress most regrettably and most importantly . we then went into an arduous, hard-working process to develop bipartisan, senate legislation that would have fundamentally fixed our asylum system. and once and for all properly resourced this department and the department of justice and state. twice congress failed to pass that legislation and so the president took this executive action within his lawful authority. mr. secretary, good morning. you outlined the domestic political challenges with what s happening at the border but the united states is not alone in this. is also mexico and they just had a new election. can you tell us the relationship and the guidelines you will use as your approach with the new administration there. are you hopeful they will cooperate? we have built a very strong and productive partnership with mexico, with the president, we expect that strong and productive partnership to continue under the presidency of claudia sheinbaum . and this challenge of migration is a regional challenge and it requires regional solutions, not just in partnership with mexico, but in partnership with other countries such as costa rica, panama, colombia, guatemala, ecuador, and the like. we are experiencing not just at the southern border but the rudder hemisphere and around the world an unprecedented level of migration, an unprecedented number of displaced people and regional challenges require regional solutions. homeland security when you look at all this bad stuff going on, they have nothing to look up to. they have no god. they have no anything. they kill people. bb-8 people. they push people into subways. there s just nothing there. religion is such a great thing. it keeps you you know, there s something to be good about. you want to be good. it so important. i don t know if it s explained right or if i m explaining it right but when you have something like that, you want to be good. you want to go to heaven, okay? you want to go to heaven. if you don t have heaven you almost say, what s the reason? why do we have to be good? let s not be good. what difference does it make? really, i don t know what to say. religion is a good thing, it was his reaction. he was asked, what is your relationship with god? he said, i do good with evangelicals. asked about his prayer life, he says, people come to me and say, sir, i pray for you every night. proving an extraordinary ability to sound clueless after all these years on the most basic questions of faith. and what is your relationship with god and talk about your prayer life, are two of the most basic questions. joining us now, nbc news national affairs analyst and partner in chief political columnist at hawk. i know he and his former partner, mark halperin, also asked donald trump questions about faith in 2016. new testament or old testament? and his answer was both. what is your favorite bible verse? what your favorite bible verse? oh, i don t want to talk. and david brody at cbn asked him if god has forgiven them and he said, well, i don t pray to god for forgiveness. there is no reason for me to be forgiven. this is a man, of course, who is claiming massive support because he s getting it among self-described evangelicals, john. please explain that to us all. thank you for comparing me with one of the great mysteries of life and modern politics. look. you had that took earlier today and i do think the change that took place that you pointed to in the religious right went from essentially the political people kind of guiding the movement and taking it to a new place to where it has become more recently, which is the religious people kind of took over in some sense the conservative movement and they started to channel their desires through political instruments. trump became for a lot of people in the antiabortion movement and more broadly on the values right, trump became a totally instrument to advance their causes and i think it s one of the most cynical things i ve seen in politics. think about people talking about true believers and talk about the faithful being single issue voters are blinded by their beliefs and ideologically driven extremists. in a lot of ways they became more instrumental than almost any faction in american politics. they look to trump and said we know he s not a christian. we know he doesn t believe anything he says, but this guy is her ticket to getting done what we want to get done. overturning roe v wade is one thing but across the board he became the tool by which they could achieve things they had long wanted to achieve and had been able to achieve and they turned out to be right about that but they meet a very deep, very cynical deal with the devil and i don t mean to call trump the devil here but it deal they said, you know, the man s not one of us but who cares. he will win and will get it done and will do what we tell him to. but they were making that bargain even before donald trump with paul wyrick and jerry falwell and richard saying, what we will do is we re going to actually turn abortion does not only into a key political issue for evangelicals but we will turn it into a religious issue. so you have a southern baptist church coming from pro-choice to pro-life. the southern baptist church, and other mainstream protestant denominations going from being pro-choice, or quite on the issue to pro-life. that s one step. but it moves forward now to where it becomes the most important issue. these political issues become the most important political issues. so if you talk to people of faith, like russell moore, and others, they would tell you pete wayne, they would tell you the so-called deal with the devil was the deal evangelical leaders made some time ago when they decided to replace spiritual goals with secular goals. we are not going to fight the spiritual battles and try to win people. that s not going to be our primary focus for a lot of these evangelical leaders we hear with a national audience. their primary focus is going to be on the secular, whether that s gaining and keeping political power or telling adherents how to become rich, the so-called prosperity gospel , which, again, both of those are completely opposite of what jesus preached about over three years. and i will say the only place, to put a fine point on it here i don t think the christian right thought that ronald reagan was a spiritual vandal. i think they thought he was one of them. i think they thought george w. bush was genuinely born again. i think they thought that mitt romney took a spiritual life spiritual seriously. even though the demands of faith and to some extent go to politics prior to donald trump, donald trump is the most gratuitous, extreme outgrowth of the thing you re talking about where they basically look at a guy and collectively that these are not stupid people in this movement. there are some stupid people everywhere, but there was a calculated thing for the christian right look to trump and knew full well that he was not one of them did not believe the same things they believed. did not go to church. was probably, privately, pro- choice. was someone who would done all kinds of things, someone heard about in this trial over the last seven or eight weeks, all kinds of things they would find morally depraved and unacceptable and simple and he made no real effort to try to even pretend to be one of them when he would answer these questions. and yet they said, we don t care because this is a winning ticket for us. with him under our thumb, we will be able to get that supreme court majority we have so wanted. and as i said before, they got it. and we elected a president, not a saint. look the other way on a lot of stuff so they get what they did you hear anything that made you think the effort to bring your son and the rest of the hostages home is making progress? well, we definitely felt hope and optimism because that was what jake sullivan was relaying to us and there was the feeling that there is this full-court press of enough is enough. we want to get these people home, all 124. and of course the american eight is something that hangs on everyone in the administration and the entire american government and he felt confident that the right people were going back to the region. we know that brett mcgurk and director bill burns were, shortly after the conversation, already on their way back to the region, which was hopeful for all of us. at the end of the day though, we know that whether you had these extremely seasoned negotiators, diplomats, experts, aides, doing all that they are doing, the final outcome is going to come from two men only deciding and that, i think, is what is so painfully torturous about this. jon, today marks eight months since october 7 since hersh was abducted. when you sit in that meeting with jake sullivan and speak as you have been for eight months to officials inside the u.s. government, what did they say today about the best hope to get the hostages? is it a deal? is it a rescue mission? what sounds most promising to you and to the people trying to pull this off? yeah. the good news is the focus in that is everybody believes the best possible way to do this is through a deal. the bad news is we been hearing that for most of the last eight months, and as you know, we are not there yet. i think what president biden did last friday night was brave and courageous and we applaud him. he took a negotiation that was stuck in neutral, maybe even sometimes in rivers and in one fell swoop it s like you pushed into third gear. now we need to keep the momentum going. and as rachel said, there are all the right people in the region. we need to push on the leaders of israel and the leaders of hamas, and have them buy in to what the mediators are pushing. it s a deal that has to get done because the israeli people are suffering. our hostages are suffering. innocent gazan civilians are suffering and eight months is eight months too many picks payment rachel, you ve been through many of these meetings now with american officials and you ve been through a lot of ups and downs , how are you and jon managing to temper your own emotions and exhaustion, your sleep, your food when faced now with another prospect that may be there is reason to be a little bit more optimistic given this latest push? well, every morning we get up and we look at each other and say, hope is mandatory and we try our very best to struggle through another day of elegant, intense torment. and it is absolutely not easy. we are broken and suffering, and yet we have no choice. there is no choice but to keep it running . and were not just running, we are sprinting. this is what all the hostage families are doing. we just have no choice but to keep full speed ahead trying every thing we can possibly do. and we are praying that the leaders of both sides, for their own personal interests the not going to come together because they both suddenly have an epiphany moment and feel they should be on the same page, but that s part of compromise. you give up something that you hold dear for something you hold more deer. so whatever interests are on the israeli side or the hamas side need to just lean forward and with the help of these expert negotiators and seasoned diplomats who are in there trying to grease the wheels, we are praying that we get a result. everyone in this region, i can t even call it suffering, it s the next step above suffering, and we need for the leaders to put an end to it. jon, one of those leaders, prime minister benjamin netanyahu has said he will come to washington and address congress on july 24. what do you make of that invitation and what do you hope to hear from him that day?
