CAESER will present their full aquifer study at the end of the month

A lead scientist of a study looking at breaches between the Memphis Sand aquifer and the shallow water aquifer above it said that the full findings will be released and presented by the end of the month.
After presenting the current findings to the Memphis City Council Tuesday, Dr. Brian Waldron — one of the scientists involved with the study — said that the final findings of the research will be released by the end of June. This will tee up the council to hear the full findings as they return for the third reading of an ordinance to regulate pipelines in the city on July 6.

Tennessee Valley Authority called study into coal ash at Memphis plant speculative Memphis aquifer

CAESER concluded that a connection exists between a shallow aquifer and the Memphis Sand aquifer in what is known as the Davis wellfield. That wellfield is one of several stations where MLGW pumps the area's drinking water out of the Memphis Sand aquifer.
"A hydrologic connection between the Horn Lake Cutoff channel and MRVA [shallow] aquifer exists and creates a pathway for runoff from the TVA Allen Former Fossil Fuel Plant to affect the water quality of the Davis wellfield," CAESER's report concluded.
TVA disputed that surface water runs along with the Horn Lake cutoff from the Allen Fossil Plant and its two coal ash ponds to the Davis wellfield. The Horn Lake cutoff is a stream that runs from T.O. Fuller State Park to the Davis Wellfield.

The natural gas storage report from the EIA for the week ending April 30th indicated that the amount of natural gas held in underground storage in the US rose by 60 billion cubic feet to 1,958 billion cubic feet by the end of the week, which left our gas supplies 345 billion cubic feet, or 15.0% below the 2,303 billion cubic feet that were in storage on April 30th of last year, and 61 billion cubic feet, or 3.0% below the five-year average of 2,019 billion cubic feet of natural gas that have been in storage as of the 30th of April in recent years....the 60 billion cubic feet that were added to US natural gas storage this week was more than the average forecast of a 51 billion cubic foot addition from an S&P Global Platts survey of analysts, but was well below the average addition of 81 billion cubic feet of natural gas that have typically been injected into natural gas storage during the same week over the past 5 years, as well as well below the 103 billion cubic feet added to natural gas storage during the corresponding week of 2020...

Prior to a Tuesday city council meeting, a Sunday rally featuring Rev. Dr. William Barber, co-chairman of the Poor People’s Campaign and a Monday march to City Hall from the Civil Rights Museum highlighted opposition to a proposed high-pressure crude oil pipeline that would go through majority-Black neighborhoods in Memphis and threaten the Memphis Sand aquifer that supplies the city with fresh drinking water.
The threat of a spill from a pipeline planned to cross directly over the source for Memphis’ drinking water is one of many reasons people opposed the proposed Byhalia Pipeline. (@SteveJonesPhoto.com)

Company Asks for Pause in Memphis Oil Pipeline Dispute

Company Asks for Pause in Memphis Oil Pipeline Dispute
A company facing resistance to its plans to build an oil pipeline over an aquifer that provides drinking water to 1 million people has asked for a “mutual pause” in its dispute with city officials in Memphis, Tennessee.
Plains All American Pipeline sent a letter to the Memphis City Council about a proposed city law that could make it harder to construct an underground oil pipeline through wetlands and neighborhoods in south Memphis and north Mississippi. Plains is part of a joint venture with Valero Energy to build the Byhalia Connection, which would link the Valero refinery in Memphis with another larger pipeline in north Mississippi.
