SC Rewind: Years Ago - 1980s | Standardbred Canada

This week s Rewind is another edition of the monthly feature
Years Ago. This time all of the short stories, old photos and memories are based on the decade of the 1980 s.
A great time in the history of Canadian harness racing and for that matter wherever else it was staged. Fans were attending races in large numbers, many new people were becoming involved and above all horses were travelling at speeds previously thought to be impossible.

The news that Laurentian University is insolvent should come as no surprise to anyone who’s familiar with the state of post-secondary education in Ontario.
The critics are right when they point out that Laurentian’s financial woes are the product of a flawed business model. But there’s a lot more to the story than that.
The real problem is the waste and duplication that pervade Ontario’s post-secondary educational sector, a plodding behemoth that Queen’s Park funds to the tune of more than $12 billion annually.

GM's new Ontario test track to help develop self-driving cars and EVs

The 55-acre facility is adjacent to GM’s assembly plant in Oshawa, which closed last year but recently got a reprieve, and will reopen to build pickup trucks. Portions of the plant currently produce vehicle parts, along with a small section that makes non-surgical masks for COVID-19 protection.
GM said it will use the track to help develop and integrate software and hardware for systems such as vehicle motion embedded controls, advanced driver-assistance systems, autonomous vehicle systems, infotainment, and other advanced technology projects.
The track is already in use, but if allowed under pandemic restrictions, the company will have an official grand opening event in early spring. The automaker’s Ontario facilities also include a cold-weather testing operation in Kapuskasing, and technology campuses in Markham and Oshawa.

Police bust car thief twice – in the same day – outside Toronto

You know that time you got arrested, and you liked it so much, you did it again the very same day?
Around 2:00 am on Sunday, February 7, police in Oshawa, just east of Toronto, came across what they assumed was an impaired driver near Centre and John Streets and gave chase.
After losing sight of the suspect, they soon came upon him again south of the 401 near Simcoe and Bloor Streets, according to reports from
This time, the 22-year-old suspect ditched the truck he was driving and took off down a bike path. After apprehending him, police discovered the truck was stolen, and that the owner had no idea it was even gone. They arrested the suspect, and also discovered meth on him.

Motor Mouth: Is Canada about to become an automotive powerhouse again?

It’s also because the automobile manufacturing business, long on the wane, may just be the engine that pulls Canada – or, at least, Ontario – out of the C19 abyss. In decline for more than a decade now, many thought automakers – at least the domestic automakers; Honda and Toyota have never wavered in their commitment – were set to abandon the province entirely. Instead, in the space of four short months, we’ve had a turnaround of epic proportions.
Whether it’s Canada’s skilled workforce; the negotiation nous of Unifor’s president, Jerry Dias; or the hot-bed of high-tech-ery that southern Ontario has become, some $6 billion – pickup truck production in Oshawa, Ford’s decision to build EVs in Oakville, and FCA ramping up PHEV production in Windsor – has been injected into the Ontario economy in the midst of the worst health/financial crisis anyone can remember.
