angeles, home to many latino immigrants. the area has long had a gang problem and through his ministry, he hoped to help solve and stop that violence. now tragically a victim of homicide himself. this is how a former parishioner remembers him. >> he was assigned to churches in inner city and he dealt with gang members and people who were dealing with drugs. that can break anybody any time, but he remained strong. >> reporter: the sheriff's office hasn't released a possible suspect or even a possible motive, but outside of the bishop's hope is a growing memorial where people are coming to grieve and share in all of the happy and positive memories they had with him, jose. there's also a planned vigil this evening. >> thank you so much. before we go, a story about breaking barriers.

service. serving as a priest and bishop in l.a. for 45 years. work to go try to bring peace to a place plagued by gun violence, now a victim of homicide himself. this is what his fellow parishioner had to say. >> he was assigned to churches in the inner city, and he got dabbled with gang members, and people dealing with drugs. that can break anybody at any time, but he remained strong. >> reporter: many are grieving his death. bishop dave focused his ministry on the poor and immigrant community. his fellow arch bishop saying he was struck by his goodness, kindness and simplicity of heart. he started an immigration task force where he helped unaccompanied minors. he's quoted calling it a labor of love. deputies will be holding a press conference in the next couple of hours, and they have sent out a

you'll have all of the ambassadors in town there as well. but i think that we should always, whether a person is a pope or a parishioner in a pew, respect a person's decisions for their own funeral. and so this is very much in keeping with the rather quiet nature of benedict xvi. the only difference is that benedict xvi really enjoyed -- he kind of dressed almost like a renaissance monarch. he enjoyed a bigger, if you will, broader colorful set of liturgical vestments and things like this. so this represents the end of his life, not necessarily the point of his papacy. in fact, i think that joseph ratzinger will probably be remembered more for his prepapal career and his post-papal career than his papal career. after all, he's been a former pope longer than he was pope.
