interior new england. this storm is still packing a punch with some heavy rain outside of d.c. the snow getting into parts of pennsylvania, upstate new york. the rain/snow line, it is riding i-95 from baltimore, d.c., philly, new york. there have been a few snow flakes flying around new york city but still a trace of snow at central park. not really seeing too much in philadelphia either. that's why we're looking at mostly rain along the i-95 corridor. as you go north, here's where all that snow is. the pinks and the purples. going into interior new england, boston could pick up six inches of snow. as it goes through the overnight, we'll find the snow rates picking up one to two inches per hour over upstate new york and interior new england. really peaking in the boston area overnight. we can still find some snow on the back side as the cold air rushes in tomorrow. it could bring a dump of snow before everything clears out going into the evening hours. we're still looking at some major impacts.

cnn meteorologist lisa is tracking it all for us. i'm worried about the ice storms that people might be seeing in certain parts of this area that will get hit, and a lot of snow looks like it will get dumped. here in d.c. it's been raining. we go a little west and i'm sure people are getting hammered. >> where you're at in d.c., you're dealing with one of the longest snow droughts on record. that's not the case for many from pennsylvania into west virginia where we've had some six to eight-inch snow totals already. like i mentioned, d.c., philly, all dealing with a snow drought. but it ends for areas in central pennsylvania where state college ends their longest stretch without one inch of snow. harrisburg has had 346 days since central pennsylvania has seen snow. here's a look at the latest alerts. all the pink winter storm warnings, especially into

americans, expected to bring lots of rain, snow, and high winds through the weekend. dylan dreyer is tracking it. dylan, where is this heading and when? >> well, lester, right now the storm is heading through the southern rockies. it's going to continue to intensify as it moves eastward through tomorrow, bringing some heavy rain likely along the gulf coast. then it makes its way up into the midatlantic and into the northeast. we are starting to see the models come into more agreement that it should be mostly rain along that i-95 corridor from washington, d.c. up through philly. through new jersey and into new york as well. the inland areas will likely see some of that heavier snow, especially up across new england. and we could see wraparound snow on the back side of the storm system. so as of right now, our highest snowfall totals will be into new york, 6 to 8 inches likely. lesser amounts as you go closer to the coast. but again, we still have to watch the track. if it shifts 25 miles south, we could see this change a bit. >> dylan, thanks. once again today the u.s. was drawn into hostilities involving iran-backed militias in the middle east, attacking a

preparation of that system working across the country and eventually impacting folks in the mid-atlantic and the northeast this weekend. there's the alert that you see now. but the system still down to the south. this is where we're going to see it through the day today. we do see the potential for some heavy rain, some strong storms right along the gulf coast, and kind of a wintry mix a little farther north into portions of the central plains and moving east. by later today, that's what we're watching. the system racing along the gulf coast. we'll see the potential for some flooding concerns, and then it quickly lifts to the north as we get into the evening hours tonight. notice we see this kind of wintry mix that's leaving us with the potential for sleet, freezing rain, travel will be difficult, specifically in parts of virginia as well as the carolinas. by the time we get into tomorrow, this is when we'll start to see the kind of impacts for parts of the northeast. the time line for washington, d.c., morning to noon, is going to be snow and sleet. we then transition to rain. not looking at a lot of accumulation as far as snowfall for some of these cities along the i-95 corridor, washington, d.c., philly is also one of those spots.

nbc ease maggie vespa is just north of boston in chelsea, massachusetts, where the preparations are already underway for the storm. sounds like that area could get hit a little bit harder, maggie. what are folks getting ready for here? >> reporter: yeah, speaking of being warned, ana. this place has been warned and they are prepping hardcore. we're talking about groceries, we're talking about runs to the hardware store for things like shovels that people haven't had to have on hand for, in some cases, years up and down the east coast, and we're talking about salt. we're in a massive salt area here. you can see the bulldozers have been moving this pile around basically. trucks have been coming through. this is the size of their stockpile that they have on hand for winters in boston. but again, we've been talking a lot throughout the morning about the dry streak that a lot of the east coast has been experiencing, close to two years, almost two full winters of no snow for a lot of cities including d.c., philly, and new york. some of those cities could just see rain, as angie talked about.

is located over areas of texas and oklahoma. and arkansas, a little bit of snowy surprise for some people this morning. we have pictures just north of fort smith, the roads are closed. there has been accidents. this traffic has not been moving. this is interstate 49, heading north out of fort smith. doesn't take much. some areas of the south and southern plains, just make enough slippery traffic there, things at a total stand still. better in little rock. you're under winter weather advisory. the roads are staying primarily wet. so now let's take into areas of the east. we're going to start with a little bit of icy weather tomorrow, especially in the appalachians. and then the snow shield and rain will move northward up to the east. this is snow predictions. how much you have to shovel or get off your car. you notice d.c., philly, new york, still have you 0 with maybe the potential for an inch or two. but closer to the 0. once you get away from the cities, that's when we get into the higher totals. it is going to be a heavy wet

you could have minor problems. that's going to be early saturday morning. when you step out of your house in western portions of virginia, just check the sidewalk first and make sure it doesn't have a coating of black ice. here's the time line, all of the rain spreads. we will get some snow as we go throughout tomorrow morning. not a lot will stick. it's not cold enough. louisville, lexington, cincinnati, indianapolis, this is the ice i was talking about. the mountain boone, asheville to roanoke, and then we watch washington, d.c., that's going to come into 7:00 a.m. to noon. maybe a brief period of snow, but then it's going to be rain. temperatures are never below freezing. no chance of snow sticking on the roads. philadelphia, timing is noon to four, and all rain after 4:00 p.m. new york city, sometime in mid afternoon, we think you're going to be either snow or rain. then it will quickly go over to rain and even a hard rain saturday evening. could end as a little bit of snow, but likely not going to get that inch. boston, different story, colder,

northwards. by the time we get to new york city it's going to be late afternoon, hartford will be after sunset. boston as we head towards 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. this is the snow forecast. and the big deal going into the storm is it hasn't snowed an inch in two years in d.c., baltimore, philly or new york, and this does not appear to be the storm that's going to break that streak. i don't see any snow coming, so we're likely going over two years in some cases. once you move to the interior, these are the areas that typically get the most snow, higher elevations, and they will be flowing, shoveling through sunday morning. boston, 3 to 6. if you go five miles away from the coast in boston, you'll be in the 8 to 12. that's 495 loop heading out to the wooster hills. portland, maine, scranton, binghamton, everyone there will be shoveling and plowing. the only ice i'm worried about. around roanoke. some areas could get up to a quarter inch.
